Chicago Cubs, World Series Champs

108 years! THIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO NICEEE! [If the Oilers make me wait this long for a Stanley Cup, I will literally be dead.] This game was really SPORTSY:

There were championship droughts from both teams. It was game 7. It was kinda unexciting for a while. 

There were emotions

Then it was tied and it was REAL exciting. Then, as if Zeus himself said “neither team should be winning this fucking thing”, there was a RAIN DELAY. SOOOO baseball.  Then the game ended and it was great and nice and hooray! There was/still is a super racist team name.

Theo Epstein, the Cub’s President, was the GM at the Boston Red Sox and was instrumental in helping them break the Curse of the Bambino.... hey does this guy know anything about hockey? I’m serious. Plus he’s a babe.

Vin Scully. AMERICAN LEGEND/play-by-play baseball broadcaster for the Dodgers has the voice of an angel and a heart of gold. He recently told the most heart warming amazing story about Madison Bumgarner and perseverance without missing a beat in the play.

I can’t possibly try to tell this story myself. Listen to the sultry tones of one Vin Scully here. You will NOT regret it. 

Fun fact: he has been with the team since they were the Brooklyn Dodgers! THAT IS SOOOOO NICE!

The Golden State Warriors won 73 games! Actually, truly unprecedented! SO COOL!

Klay Thompson, who plays on this team alongside dream boat Steph Curry, doesn’t want to party too hard because he is a realist and knows that the end game is an NBA championship:

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

My last real post here was August 2014. It’s now April 2016. 

SHAMEFUL, I know. I have no excuse. I missed a lot of nice, too nice, and not nice things in the sports world. I won’t bother trying to catch up partly because, from a local standpoint, little has changed.

The Oilers are still real bad. But with Rexall Place officially closed to Oilers hockey (with a practically embarrassing amount of funeral-level fanfare, but I loved every second of it) and the next season starting at the shiny new downtown arena in the fall, I’m hoping for a fresh start. Turns out, the numbers are in our favour!

This weekend, our country’s government mandated hockey overlords shared the most glorious news tidbit of all time, undoubtedly peaking the interest of a nation (an Oilers Nation).

Long story short: when LA, Buffalo and San Jose all moved to their new buildings: they made it to the playoffs in their FIRST YEAR IN THEIR NEW ARENAS.

Were those teams terrible for 10 full years prior?

I don’t know - but I DO know that the Sharks used to play in a place called the COW PALACE.

Holy shit, I’m not a huge basketball fan but Steph Curry, you and your team are very good at this sport! TO HISTORIC PROPORTIONS! The Golden State Warriors have now tied the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls for winning lots of games! Now, Steph,go get a cool earring as a homage to Michael Jordan and CALL IT A DAY.

OH MY GOD BRUCE ARIANS (Coach of the Arizona Cardinals) you are history’s greatest monster!

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians told an assembled group of high school coaches that football is under attack and those coaching the sport need to reach mothers in particular with the message that it's safe for their sons to play.

"We feel like this is our sport. It's being attacked, and we got to stop it at the grass roots," he said. "It's the best game that's ever been f------ invented, and we got to make sure that moms get the message, because that's who's afraid of our game right now. It's not dads, it's moms."

Essentially, ol’ Bruce says FUCK YOU MOMS, your love for your child is making it difficult for me to enjoy America’s favorite pastime because you’re worried that your kid’s head is scrambled probably because it is. It really is.

FANTASY FOOTBALL HAS BEGUN

I received a B- from Yahoo Sports (which I'm pretty sure means nothing) but it put me above my husband's embarrassing grade of C so that's all that matters.

Team name: LI$A FOOTBALL aka Money Michetti. 

This is, of course, an ode to Johnny Football aka Money Manziel. 

Cam Newton was out for Game 1. I was stressed. But it worked out because i won the week by less that 1 point which wasn't stressful at all!

Also I continued my search for the perfect brunch + football locale in Edmonton. There remains a huge gap in his area. 

***There's a very big, looming That's Not Nice this week in the NFL. I'm not even going to talk about it because it's so deeply upsetting and has been talked about everywhere. Keith Olbermann is also (rightly) super pissed.

That's Nice

Washington's NFL team is reporting a 35% decrease in merch sales because people are less stoked about being racist. Or they just don't like them anymore because they're turrible and RGIII was kiiiiind of a bust. I'll say it's because of the racist thing. 

Speaking of RGIII, this is NOT nice. There's a bronze statue of him at Baylor now. Is this real life? He is 24. Come on now.
