Onwards!
For those followers that are desperately wondering "but what will happen to this blog now that Jackie is done teaching?!?!" Never fear! I plan on using this blog as a space to comment on current events from a feminist perspective, keep you apprised of pop culture stuffs, project my general feminist musings and maybe even post a lecture or two for your own feminist teachings.
Hope you all stick around!

Thanks for a wonderful semester!
I realize that now your grades are in, most of you will never see this message. But for those of you who I've successfully converted into tumblrers (muahahahahaha!), here's hoping you see this.
Thanks for an absolutely fantastic semester! You were an amazing class and I genuinely love you guys. I hope that all of your future endeavors are successful (unless your future endeavors involve cocaine dealing or something, and then it's probably best if they're not). It was an honor to be your teacher on this journey. Keep in touch, and go forth to change the world, you budding feminists, you!
All best,
Jackie

Essential Feminist Documentaries Meta Post
I was asked to reblog the link to The Purity Myth that we watched in class last week and I thought I'd just make a big post of all the wonderful feminist documentaries that we've watched in class and/or are awesome and you should watch them anyway. Most of these are technically preview versions for educators and while I fully endorse viewing these at some kind of paid event, ain't nobody got time for that.
Documentaries we screened in class:
Killing Us Softly 4
Tough Guise
The Purity Myth
Dreamworlds 3
Miss Representation
Documentaries that are totally worth your time:
The Celluloid Closet
The Bro Code
Asking For It
If you think of any others, reblog and add them!

I always enjoy projects that get me to see sides to things I hadn't considered and Tiana's project did a great job with that. She brings out the best in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.
Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, is an ass-kicking heroine film with a cast of independent women, who exude dominance. The film depicts women as something other than the dutiful wife and mother, it gives them a greater purpose than simply homemaking, they are “unruly women”. Also, ...

Jenn's analysis of Easy A was great to read and she's right on point. 10/10, do recommend.
Sony Pictures made the genre of high school films a little more watchable with their 2010 film Easy A. The protagonist, Olive Penderghast, is a refreshing change from movie teenagers typically portrayed as simply shopaholics or boy/vampire crazy. With her loyalty to a gay friend she goes...

Ky breaks it down in a plain and simple format that works very well for this project. She also manages to perfectly blend witticisms with quality analysis (not always an easy task).
This is a point/counterpoint analysis on The Hunchback of Notre Dame with stephconaton. Her side of the argument can be found here.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame was one of the only Disney movies I didn’t have as a kid. The whole “gypsies are bad” thing wasn’t really something my...

It was a slightly difficult task to argue that SatC disrupted hegemony, but Natalia did a great job!
Sex and the City was a step in the right direction in displaying non-hegemonic prescriptions. Non-hegemonic prescriptions are representations that disrupt social norms of racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, ageism, etc. First, the film captures the lives of four women who are close...

I promised examples, so here you go! This is a fantastic final project that was one of the best from last semester. Due to numbers, Amanda did her project by herself, but went above and beyond and had a wonderful project as a result. Even if you're working in a group, this is a wonderful guide.

Harry Potter is worldwide phenomenon. It is a best-selling novel series in history and the highest-grossing film series of all time. In addition, Harry Potter also now has its own theme park at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. It has no doubt been a tremendous influence on pop culture...

Articles on sex ed stuff happening round the US
Will you read these by class? Definitely not.
Will you read these at all? Probably not.
Will you get punished for not reading them? No, not really, no.
Should you read them anyway? AW HELLZ YAW!
Because this stuff is important and is happening RIGHT NOW!
Here's stuff on Ohio's very bad attempt to become an abstinence only sex ed state:
On the legislation itself
On the nebulous and highly stupid term "gateway to sexual activity"
Here's stuff on sex ed country wide:
Pam Stenzel's just kinda cray cray
Some places actually teach about good sex! (And it's crazy controversial)
Speaking of good sex, as you most likely didn't get this education in high school, here are some wonderful tips on how to have sex. (Well lesbian sex, but still. Good tips for anyone who wants to get freaky with women. And starter tips for how to get freaky with yourself). Totally NSFW
Any why does this matter? Because we're still seeing things like this. In 2013. Oy.
Happy reading!
Bonus: A short article on the Catholic P.E. teacher from Columbus who was outed via her mother's obit
#a message from your prof#homework#ish#you probs won't do it#but still#it's here#if you want#and there's an article on sex#which you'll all read#and then won't read anything else#but that's ok!#wgss 2230#pop culture#articles

Quote
The Guardian. (via lucyripley)
“A purity ring doesn’t carry much meaning when Ron Weasley is pulling it off with his teeth.”

(via satanic-pony)
I’m just gonna be over here, slow-clapping.
(via ifeelbetterer)
“But if anything, most fan fiction is a rejection of Rihanna and EL James’s leather-bound version of sexuality. When most teenagers are faced with the miserable advice of sex education (put a condom on a carrot, use a mirror to look at your bits), or the miserable version of sexuality in porn, fan fiction offers a more honest way to engage with relationships and sex.”
Here here, Guardian.

(via professorspork)
When Disney was trying to promulgate the story that the Jonas Brothers were strict Christians who wore rings to symbolise their commitment to not putting it about, fan fiction sites were full of stories of girls being ravished by the band in incestuous foursomes. While Styles was made to apologise for a whispered indiscretion on The X Factor, it was vanilla to what he is whispering in teenagers’ own imaginations. Fan fiction takes power back from a PR-obsessed industry and gives the fans free rein.

(via blackmoods)
Thought this would be perfect for the fandom and fanfiction unit.
(via it-doesnt-do-wood-sherlock)
The best resources always seem to pop up just as we finish a unit, but GO READ! These are amazing articles! Fan fiction is a powerful and under appreciated medium. Enjoy!
Fan fiction is making teenagers better writers and better satirists, and allowing them to explore sexuality in a way decided by them rather than dictated by the entertainment industry. A purity ring doesn’t carry much meaning when Ron Weasley is pulling it off with his teeth.
