Understanding Landscape Lighting
Tumblr media
Landscape lighting is one of those nifty Internet marketing terms that no one seems to understand fully. Basically, landscape lighting refers to the application of outdoor lighting to enhance and highlight public and private outdoor gardens and landscapes; for its practical applications, night aesthetics, safety, access, security, recreation, and social occasions, and event and social uses. Outdoor landscape lighting can be provided by a variety of sources including light posts, solar floodlights, driveway lighting, string lights, lanterns, and abstract lamps. A common feature of landscape lighting is its direct purpose: highlighting the main features of a landscape or building. It can add depth and definition to architectural features as well as creating general mood for the area. The most important lighting components of landscape lighting include fixtures such as path lights, floodlights, lanterns, and post lights.
In the preceding examples, we saw how the installation of a floodlight in the garden area could effectively diminish shadows. Another aspect that is commonly overlooked when designing landscape lighting is the appropriate positioning of fixtures such as well lights, floodlights, and lanterns. Well, lights are intended to focus illumination in a chosen area, while floodlights are intended to light an entire yard or region that includes several pathways or other lighting objectives. These lights should be installed in places where they will not interfere with passing foot traffic, where they can be seen from various distances, and where they can provide adequate daytime lighting without becoming a safety hazard. Landscape lights can be installed throughout the yard in areas such as around a fire pit, near statues or other decorative features, and over the top of shrubs and plants to emphasize the overall shape of the area as well as accent-specific features.
For landscape lighting purposes, an average bulb for a well-lit walkway would be a twenty-watt halogen light bulb. This type of bulb is suitable for general applications, but in the case of higher-traffic areas it is better to opt for a more powerful bulb, such as a fifty-watt or sixty-watt bulb that will provide brighter light for longer periods. Bulbs are available in a wide variety of colors including white, yellow, blue, red, green, indigo, and even purple. An important aspect to consider is the proper placement of the floodlight relative to structures such as steps, fences, and decks. A well-placed floodlight will illuminate the entire area without any of the areas being over-lit. It is important to note that installing a floodlight beyond the intended location may have adverse effects on nearby buildings and structures.
