Ideally people should learn to meditate just for the sake of meditation itself.  But, most people need a nudge to get them going; the promise of a better life as a result of committing to a meditation practice.  I got started meditating seriously due to significant health problems.  I committed to 3 hours of meditation per day.  Now, 11 years later, I meditate for the joy of meditation itself.  We grow in stages; one small step at a time.
