You know I've always really enjoyed the found family trope and I thought it was weird because I like my born family. It turns out that found family and born family are not mutually exclusive like you can have both.

It's a unique type of frustration when you agree that a character is deeply flawed but other people keep missing what's actually wrong with them and assigning them new flaws that they don't even have it's like free my man he did none of that. He did a bunch of other shit tho.

When I read phantom of the opera for the first time I decided to compare it to the musical in my head to see how different they were there was very little difference as far as I could tell. I then realized I had never seen the musical and was actually thinking of an episode of Wishbone.

this, here, + the fact Mina is never mentionned as Lucy's adopted sister or Mrs Westenra as her mother in some way, is the reason I strongly headcanon that Mina's mother was Lucy's nanny before she died.

"slept together" ok slumber party amirite? "eaten together" though? slept and eaten together? feels like Mina's mother breastfed Lucy as a kid, which was a very common practice in upper-middle-class and upper class england, hence the bossom brother/sister/buddies expression.

Why would Mrs Westenra need a nurse to feed her daughter? well it's been established already that she had a frail healthy. It's entirely possible she suffered post-partum or didn't even produce enough milk for her child.

There's also the fact that, between Lucy, who's walking in the upper class circles (doctor, son of a lord...) and her mother, who lives in a big house with her daughter and servants, instead of, say, an appartement with one maid and a cook, the Westenra are wealthy. Upper-class, even.

So why would an upper class young girl have a future schoolmistress, orphan, best friend? Unless Mina is, despite being an orphan, from a rich family too, but I don't think the Westenra ever mention being friends with her parents.

So Ianyway that's my headcanon. Sorry it's said clumsily
