It’s not that i’m sexist, I just remember a time, when I held the door open for a girl, and she began to scream and cry. “You oppressive piece of shit,” she began to say, and when I tried to calm her, she kicked my way. I used self defense, and moments later she was on the ground. The cops were called, and I’m writing this from prison now. It’s not that I hate women, just a selective few, the ones who abuse the system, and many of them do.

I’m so excited to get to share this at last! My first graphic novel, “Displacement,” will be published by First Second in 2019!  I’ve wanted to tell this story for so long, but during the last election (you know the one) I kicked the work into high-gear to get it off the ground. Big thanks to First Second and my editor Calista Brill for believing in this story! Here’s the summary: 

In 1942, Ernestina Teranishi and her parents were taken from their home in San Francisco and forced into an American concentration camp. They were among the 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry to be forcibly removed from the west coast of the United States.

Seventy-four years later, Ernestina’s granddaughter Kiku is experiencing a different kind of displacement. She is being pulled through time to different moments in Ernestina’s life. When she finds herself stuck in camp with the grandmother she never got to meet, she finally learns about a family history that was rarely spoken of at home.

Displacement is a story about actively reliving and reviving the past. The nation that forced Kiku’s family into camps in the 1940s looks eerily similar to the nation Kiku knows in 2016, and the more she understands about her family’s trauma, the more determined she is to do her part in preventing a repeat of it. Camp left scars on her family through the generations, and Kiku learns that healing comes from learning, sharing and fighting for change.

My disdain for cops is institutional, not individual. Just because you may have a positive personal relationship with someone who is a cop doesn’t change the fact that the law enforcement system in this country is rooted in white supremacy and is used to repress and control the working class while protecting the elite.

All cops have signed up to enforce a system which is oppressing marginalized people in this country on a daily basis. Your personal relationship with an agent of oppression does not change this fact.
