âToo bad they canât get rid of me. If I go, I take all the Lola with me, and then itâs just⌠Cantina. Boring! Whoâd eat there?â Lola joked; she could tell there was something serious going on just from the atmosphere. It was her duty to soften the blow of it all, if only just a little bit.
And there it was. Lolaâs face fell, her brow creasing with concern. Empathy. If there was one thing she knew, it was how much it sucked to have no idea where your mom was - that was something sheâd never wish on anyone, let alone Tiny. âMaybe⌠something came up, super last minute. Her phone could be dead, or there could be insane traffic⌠There are a lot of possible reasons, right? I know itâs way easier said than done, but letâs focus on the positives.â Suddenly, her smile returned - hopefully, itâd prove to be infectious. âYouâve got me, all the nachos in the world to distract you, and a phone that could go off any minute with an excuse for the no-show.â
Tiny only expected to come here and feel sorry for himself, maybe even fill up on nachos and find away to swipe some liquor from a story to drown his thoughts out. He never anticipated a shoulder to vent or cry on, but he was grateful for her thoughtfulness and the different perspective. âMaybe..â He replied, trying to stay on the bright side like she did. Maybe there was a reason for his mom not showing up, and maybe it was a good one, even if history wasnât exactly on her side right now. His face perked up slightly, reaching underneath the table to pull out his phone, turning the ringer up. âThere. Now if she calls, I can hear it at least.â
It didnât quite fix anything, but he could at least say he wasnât as bummed as he was. âThanks for the pick me up. Now I feel less like drowning myself in nachos. I mean, I can if I wanted to, donât get me wrong.â He smiled slightly, reaching for another chip to prove his point. âI know youâre a busy lady and everything. But I was wondering, what are you doing after work?â

âExactly. Thereâs no escape,â Lola replied, with a cheery grin she hoped might elicit one from Tiny. She gratefully took the seat, hanging back in case somebody called for her - but otherwise ready to listen. As soon as she heard it was about his mom, her face changed - suddenly, it felt a touch more serious to her. Before she offered any kind of response she reached out, stopping a coworker on their way past. âHeyâ could you just tell my dad Iâm taking an⌠extended break? Iâll stay late to make it up. Thanks.â With that out of the way, Lola pulled her chair up, resting her arms on the table before her. âIâll take it from that âsupposedâ and the fact that youâre here that it didnât work out that way?â she tried, with an internal wince.Â
For some reason, he canât help but warm up to the girl. Something about her warm demeanor was sort of infectious. âFine, but if you get fired from your own restaurant, donât blame me.â He spoke, a small chuckle escaping his lips. He didnât come here to laugh, but somehow she ended up getting him out of his head for at least a moment. Once he was sure she was all in, he nodded at her response, shrugging his shoulders. âBasically. Sheâs..not well..uh..rehab type stuff..â Tiny tried to explain as he fidgeted slightly, his left hand scratching at the table slight. Itâs a tough subject for him, one he doesnât talk about much, but heâs putting himself out there with this.
âWe were supposed to meet up at this restaurant, but she bailed. I tried calling her phone, no answer. So Iâm just like..I dunno. Iâm mad she flaked but Iâm also scared she flaked because of a relapse or something.â

It was common for Lola to end up serving friends and classmates after school let out. Sometimes it was a bummer to miss out on the fun but she was smart with her breaks, and it didnât count as eavesdropping if she had to walk past the table anyway, right? Regardless, when she stopped by Tinyâs table once again, she had already figured there wasnât much fun to be had there. The type of misery that came with nacho-moping was a very specific breed, and Tiny was radiating it.Â
âYou can have all the nachos you want,â she replied, quickly jotting it down on her pad - only to tuck it straight into her pouch. âBut, first⌠company policy. This is your third batch, so I have to askâŚâ Lola paused, offering up a sympathetic pout. âYou wanna talk about it?â
âCompany policy eh? Iâd ask to speak to a manager but I think Iâm sorta kinda looking at her.â He smirked, pointing to her name on the menu. It wasnât called Lolaâs Cantina for nothing, thatâs for sure, and heâs also sure that if sheâs not the actual manager, the nice older guy near the front who heâs sure is her dad would vouch for her. Maybe it was better to get things off his chest, at least a little bit? âYeah, I guess Iâm willing.â He relented, kicking out the chair in front of him and offering her a chance to sit down, hopefully not intruding on her eventual break.
âI was supposed to meet with my mom today, to catch up, talk, see how sheâs been..â

Food was a necessity, but today just felt like one of those days where he wanted to use food as a crutch to mask how he was feeling. Today was supposed to be a good day, fun and hopeful and all those super happy feelings people talk about. But instead, it sucked, and he felt like a bit of an idiot for expecting anything less. He wasnât paying too much attention to his surroundings, swirling a tortilla chip mindlessly in salsa as he thought about today over and over again. He peered up at his server, putting on a smile for her because why wouldnât he? âHey, Pinks.â He greeted her, trying to put his best foot forward. âThink I could get some more of these nachos? Extra cheese. I know, I know, itâs my third one. But itâs a bottomless nacho kind of evening..â

a smile came out as she heard those first words. heâd been a good friend to her and was a good listener, so perhaps being friends first really had helped this time around. rie had to admit sheâd been a little reluctant after hooking up with reggie to let herself fall for someone. then again falling for tiny hadnât been that quick. plus after confronting reggie a little while ago she realized she truly felt ready to move on. perhaps thatâs why she had tried to speed it up with tiny a little. at the suggestion of trying to go out on a real date she nodded, resting her hand above his that was on her knee. âyeah, just promise me one thing,â she paused, hoping to add some suspense. plus she had a little inside joke prepared for him. she unleashed, âas long as itâs more than our study dates or me making sushi then iâd really like that. a real date.â
tiny hadnât had an extensive âdatingâ history. hookups and things of that nature, sure, but it was hard to settle down and have a normal relationship when things were so volatile in his life. but for the first time in forever, things felt like they were finally normal enough to consider giving dating a try. at least not without constantly worrying about anyoneâs safety for being around him. he gave her hand a squeeze, glad she was on board with the idea. âyeah?â he pondered curiously about her conditions. he scoffed, rolling his eyes. âugh, but i love your sushi. dealâs off.â he turns his head and nose up at her, laughing as he looks back at her. âyou drive a hard bargin, sweets. but i got you. letâs give it a try.â

she chuckled along with him. âoh my god, i miss shoes that light up! i used to have the sketchers that lit up when you stomped really hard so younger me was stomping literally everywhere i went. and do you remember the heely shoes?â she shook her head at the memory. âexactly! and sharks are awesome. we should go light up shoe shopping one day.â she cursed under her breath when she made a mistake with one of her strokes. âits settled then. iâll have you drawing like a pro in no time.â amara quickly turned the pencil around to erase what she had done before she got to work once again. âof course. aaaaaand, done!â there it was. a sketch of a baby with a mohawk and some cute sneakers to match. she tilted the notebook so tiny could see the drawing. âwhadya think?â
âi knew you were a sketchers girl. oh sh-, er, i mean, heck yes. heelys were hella rad.â he corrects himself looking down at their robo baby. heâs not totally sure if thereâs something in there that can hear what theyâre saying, but heâs not about to risk his mark for cursing around a baby. but even with that, he still didnât think heâd have such a good time babysitting with her, but she was proving him wrong. something like drawing and talking about childhood shoes just seemed to bring them together. âshoe shopping..thatâs a big commitment. soon youâre gonna have to put a ring on this finger, young lady. and for the record, i love green apple ring pops.â he chuckled as he felt relieved to finally move again. he carefully sets the baby down on the couch, scooting up so he can see the picture. ânice! way to give me my dream shoe and everything. youâre awesome, mara.â

amara giggled. she let out a high pitched âjheeze.â playing up her excitement at tinyâs shoes. she smiled mischievously and in one swift movement put her pencil down to reach over and tug at his laces untying them completely. âoops.â was all she said. âmaybe we should get dj some matching ones.â she picked the pencil back up and continued to work on her sketch as she talked. âbaby shoes are so cute.â she was obsessed with them. whenever she went show shopping for herself amara could never resist looking at the smaller sneakers. âiâm sure they arenât that  bad. i could help you with your drawing if you want since you pretty much stopped me from blowing up the science lab.â she chuckled to herself suddenly getting a new idea for how she wanted the picture to turn out. âyup.â she replied popping the p. âiâm almost finished.â
tiny raised his brows and tried to get up as his laces were untied, but he realized that if he moved, he might mess up the picture. and of course she knew that. âwow, the disrespect to the timbs. donât look, son.â he chuckled as he covered the robo babyâs eyes. âkids get the best looking shoes. my cousins got these cool purple and pink shoes that light up. itâs weird adult sizes donât have them. like, i donât care how old i get, sometimes a guy just wants a shoe that lights up when he walks. maybe a shark logo on the side. kill âem with the lights and stuff.â he explained as he tried to envision wearing such a cool pair of shoes. he smiled at the idea of doing something different and actually trying to draw well, nodding at her suggestion. âthat sounds good. you making me into a regular picaso like you.â he beamed, waiting patiently for her to finish up. âremember to make the mohawk pop.â

she couldnât help but laugh a little, her cheeks flushing a bit. she had been drunk, but it wasnât enough to have forgotten that whole night. if she had forgotten then she wouldnât have been acting as weird as she had been. but she cared about him and felt they should be on the same page. if not the same, then be honest at least. âi had that happen to me once and it sucked,â she sighed before shrugging. she really didnât want to think about reggie in this moment anyways. âi like being friends with you and i liked the sex. but,â she paused, âit made me think i did want more. i was scared to admit it because of how it ended badly for me the last time i wanted to be more with someone.â
âooh..well, iâm not a ghoster, no worries.â he tried to reassure her, moving his hand up to rest against her knee. tiny liked to have fun and joke around a lot, but he was never the type of guy to just hook up with a girl and never talk to her again. something about it just felt rude, being intimate with someone and never calling again. heâd seen his brother do the same thing to girls, but it was something he wasnât keen on copying. as she explained how she felt, he raised his brows, a little taken back. there was always this sort of unspoken vibe of sorts between them, but he could never place his finger on it until now. âalright, thereâs a lot of feelings and shit in the air i think. maybe we could like, try to go on a date? a real date, and see what happens? if weâre feeling like this, we kinda owe it to ourselves to see where this goes.â

rie looked over to her other side, still glad the baby was asleep. she certainly didnât need to have it crying during this, probably important, discussion. once she was sure it was still asleep she looked back over at tiny. there was no reason to beat around the bush with this subject either. âi think weâre cool and i did enjoy myself,â she tried to reassure him. âbut i was a little worried about what that had meant for us, for you.â rie felt a little awkward, not quite sure heâd want her to blurt out her past hookup history.Â
âpssh, i knew you enjoyed yourself at least. iâm kind of the man.â he boasted with a bit of a laugh, though he does breath in a sigh of relief to let her know he really was relieved to hear that. still, he could only joke around for so long, and thankfully she was quicker to get to the point than he was. âwhat? no no, nothingâs..iâm not..like, iâm not the type of dude who would stop being your friend or something cause we had sex, i like hanging out and talking to you.â he peered up at her from his seat, moving up one rug on the bleachers. âdid you..want things to change?â

rie had just been so in the zone that she hadnât heard tiny approach her nor see him either. she finished translating the song before she finally heard tinyâs voice. âoh god,â she quickly closed her notebook before also pausing the music. she slid the headphones down to rest around her neck. she felt bad for having not noticed him earlier. yet she felt even worse for pretty much avoiding him for the past few days. however, now she had no excuses anymore. âi was in the zone, sorry,â she nodded. âbut, yeah. did you want to talk?â
âitâs all good, i lose myself in the study zone sometimes too.â he shrugged, taking a seat below her. he feels somewhat odd for reaching out like this, mostly because heâs never really been the one to do so. but he has this strange need to clear the air with her, make sure thing are okay between them. sex does have a way of making things muddled or messy. âyeah, i was just checking to see if you were cool. we havenât really talked or texted much since the party when we uh..you know.â

usually tiny would make his way home or even decide to stick around for a little one on one tutoring session with someone in need. today though, he had more important things on his mind, getting back to his old neighborhood for a much need âtalkâ with someone very important. he makes shortcut through the gym, walking by when he notices someone familiar in the bleachers. it had been a hot minute since theyâd talked or talked about torresâ party at all, though he chalked it up to just her being busy. no better time to at least get a âyou goodâ from her at least. âyo..earth to rie.â he called out, waving his hand in from of her face since she canât hear him through her headphones. âyou know you should only have one of those in, right?â
the final period of the school day and it coincidently was her free period. instead of going home she had gone into the empty gym and sat on the bleachers. she pulled out her headphones and pressed play on her music. next she pulled out her notebook and went back to trying to translate another song. sure there were other things on her mind, but oddly enough this calmed her down. @tbelzbossâ
