Wednesday’s vote followed a recommendation that was made without opposition by the City Council’s finance committee last week. The items are taxed 10.25 percent in Chicago. The vote will remove Chicago’s portion of that tax, or 1.25 percent. Supporters say the measure corrects an unfairness to women.

Tampons and sanitary napkins are now characterized as medical necessities to be exempted.

The tax on the feminine products has become a national issue, with at least seven states now considering legislation. Also, five women in New York recently filed a lawsuit arguing that the tax is unconstitutional.

In Illinois, lawmakers recently advanced a measure to exempt feminine hygiene and incontinence products from the state sales tax.

ALRIGHT MY U.S. COLLEGE CHILDREN LISTEN UP

If you haven’t filed your taxes, today’s the day, and let me just tell you: TurboTax is FREE, and with their help in deciphering the legal jargon of the IRS, you can jump all the hoops you need to in order to get education credits worth $800 or more. I’m not even kidding. All my school’s student employment was tax exempt, so I wasn’t planning on a refund at all, but with the education credit I get $885, just for working and being in school. I never even would have known about it if they hadn’t checked for me!

So go forth and get money, my little ones!

Oh, and regardless of whether you’re in college or not:

Quit procrastinating and do your dang taxes! At least file an extension or something. It only takes an hour or two with the free online software; I know it’s scary, but you can do it! Go forth and be legal!
