This is a new painting of Centeotl, Our Lord the Maize, in pastel on paper. In the world view of our people, Centeotl does not rule over the corn, but is the corn itself. When we eat corn it is His flesh we tear with our teeth, and when we grind corn to make tortillas it is His body which He gives up in sacrifice for our sake. To eat is to partake in the death of the corn, which in turn becomes our flesh and gives us life. This is a sacrifice Centeotl makes for our sake, willingly. In my painting, which was inspired by an ancient Mayan statuette which I share here as well, a farmer holds an ear of corn in his hands, but instead of the cob, Centeotl in his “human” form is revealed. He is young and beautiful, for the corn is young and tender when we eat it. His body is painted yellow, and He is dressed in jade and quetzal feathers, for the yellow cob is dressed in the green husk. He presents himself to us, as a sacrifice, in all His youthful beauty, and reminds us of our responsibility to live in balance with Him and Tlaltecuhtli, Our Mother the Earth, for just as He sacrifices himself for our sake, so too is it our responsibility to sacrifice for Hm and His Mother the Earth.
This painting is available as a print in my Etsy shop. Click here!
