Student designers at FIT use muslin to create beautiful gowns.
This past week, FIT fashion design students created garments and dresses from muslin. Each garment was unique and incorporated different fashion forward details and trims. It is clear that the students put in lots of time and effort to design these intricate garments. Although they only used muslin, each student was able to create different varieties in textures and drape to enhance the silhouettes. Even though muslin is the main focus and material used, some students decided to use embellishments, hardware, and floral decor to enhance the look and fully get a feel of the desired idea.
Prior to creating the garments, students researched a specific idea or time period to base their garment off of. The designers created mood boards full of color and possible fabrics to use if they were to fulfill the proposed ideas. Images of their potential designs were drawn, painted with watercolor, and sketched with multiple colors and styles. Some students also included close up images to focus on specific details they wanted the viewer to pay close attention to.
Each garment was unique and individual to each designer; therefore, I do not have a favorite. Although I loved the strapless dress by Mona Sun, I enjoyed the simple pants and top by Maya Sun that incorporated long tassels at the shoulders and an interesting collar. Hannah Asch also had a smart idea of using different color muslin to have the flowers stand out amongst the candle-like top. The exhibit overall was a beautiful experience and really puts how much time and dedication it takes into full perspective.

Monochromatic outfits with matching coats!
Inspired by Bill Cunningham, my class assignment was to photograph people on the street to get an idea of what fashion trends are appearing in the real world. Although it was quite difficult to capture good photos without people thinking we're weird, I managed to capture some photos showing monochromatic outfits with matching coats in the streets of NYC. Each outfit showcases one color, either in one color shade or multiple based on preference. Each outfit is in the same material from jackets to pants. Usually, under-clothes are a bit lighter or darker in color to make the outfit pop. Bags and hats usually match shoes and correspond to the outfit in a similar color value. This trend can be seen in the streets as well as the display windows for luxury stores.

The Musuem at FIT is a fashion forward museum that showcases the garments and fashionable items the college has collected from various people/locations over the years.
