The Price of Sugar
The movie, “The Price of Sugar” is about the lives of the average Haitain sugar cane workers in the Dominican Republic. The workers are recruited by men who work for the sugar cane company from the Dominician Republic that go across the border to Haiti and they bring somewhat of 30,000 every harvest season. The workers desperately came to the Domnician Republic on false hopes to improve their lives and their families lives and being promised good paying jobs. The Haitians were so desperate that they even payed the Dominican men to bring them there just to cut cane. The Haitians are even stripped of their identities and are considered illegal everywhere in the Domincan Republic but on the plantation. This is an example of global inequality because the fact that Haiti is among one of the most dysfunctional countries of the world, it makes them vulnerable to be taken advantage of because of their lack of education which then transpires into their class. You can identify that the ones who are in charge of the sugar cane companies are of a higher class which gives them the power to be able to manipulate other cultures
Something that stands out to me is that the race of the head of the sugar cane production is Dominican Republican and they are the wealthiest family in the Dominican republic which means that they have a lot of political power. The sugar cane company is policed and by the company and they exercise complete power and control over the workers. Not all of the Hatian were smuggled to the Domincan Republic but some of them voluntarily came as well because the president of Haiti fled from the country and people were being killed so they migrated for safety.
There is no limit to who can work on the plantation. Women and children have to work as well alongside men in strenuous conditions and have to come home to a cramped living space and water that is contaminated with toads. Almost all of the children have parasites and almost all of them are malnourished. What the parents make is not nearly enough to educate the children and feed them almost everyday so education is out of the question, which means that the cycle of poverty and slavery is rarely broken within families unless they run away. Running away is also nearly impossible because the company is policed by the workers and there are guards everywhere. The perimeters are also guarded with barbed wire to insure that no one can get away. The chances of these families moving up in social class or growing their cultural capital is slim to none. There has to be a third party involved who is more powerful than the Vicini family to break this cycle and generate a change because these people’s basic human rights are violated and there should never be a reason why an entire family works all day and barely has food to eat.

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2013/11/05/can-colleges-build-students-cultural-capital-and-should-they
This article is an example of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory because it’s shows how there is an inequality with cultural capital which is how students have an unequal opportunity to recourses and education. Lederman states, “As is true with many traits, the degree of cultural capital that students have correlates with the educational level of their parents and the level of the students' own high school academic achievement”. This is saying that cultural capital is passed down from your parents which means that if you don’t have cultural capital then it may be because of your parents. This is important because it’s shows why it’s is hard for many first time college students even if they do decide to go to college because they are not exposed to the recourses that everyone else may have. Colleges should go out of their way to increase their student’s cultural capital to put them at a higher prestige other than having a degree.

https://thegrapevine.theroot.com/celebrities-clearly-have-ample-access-to-covid-19-tests-1842410386
This is an example of Max Weber’s theory because it shows how people of eminence have a certain advantage at not attracting the virus as much or getting tested before having symptoms. Stidhum states, ”Since we’re on the topic of discrimination, the frequent news of celebrities testing positive has highlighted the fact that the rich, famous and prominent have had easy access to tests” (Stidhum 1). This is important because it’s showing how people who are famous are used as heavy influencers to spread awareness and make everyone extra careful about contracting the virus.

This is an example of Karl Marx’s theory because it explains how class is a key factor in the gaps of covid-19. The article states, “People with money are likely to find it easier to put distance between themselves and others. They can do their work at home, connect to colleagues and friends via Zoom, and hold online happy hours with their “quarantinis”. (And to be clear – good for them). They may also be more able to get food and supplies brought to their door, and stockpile some necessities. It takes money to hoard” ( Rothwell 1). This is saying that the reason why the gap is so large is because if you are in a higher social class then it would be easier for you to social distance because you most likely work from home and you have more money to stock food. On the ither hand, you may not be as fortunate to work from home if you have an essential job.

Fieldwork 8
I watched a total of 12 commercials and 6 of them were aimed at girls, 4 of them were aimed at boys, and 2 of them were unisex. The adds mostly used a lot of pink, babydolls, hair, makeup, cooking, and light music for their commercial while for the boys they often used more aggressive music, dark colors, cars, trucks and legos to get boys attention. The commercials are teaching kids that girls are to be soft, poised and to care for young. Contrary to girls, kids are being taught that boys should be aggressive, tough, and builders. As a result I think that we as a society push a more “masculine” idea in little boys heads which shapes their masculinity in an unnatural way

Fieldwork Race
Tumblr media
This is relevant because it shows how the British took over Africa, forced them into slavery, forced their language, and education amongst Africans. This is important because it highlights the economic and political power that the European countries had over Africa.

Fieldwork Race
Tumblr media
This is an example of institutionalized racism because the system here is not set up for black people to get approved for a loan. The “loan officer” is portrayed as a KKK which symbolizes the entire institution itself to be racist toward black people.

Fieldwork Assignment #4
Rihanna’s song “Work” reflects dialect because she says, “ He said me haffi work, work, work, work, work, work”. She is saying he said I have to work, work, work, work, work, work. In this line, the word haffi is a jamaican  patois or “patwah” with a Barbadian accent. This word haffi means have to. This reveals dialect because it shows how there are different ways of saying things in different cultures. “Work” reflects gender because in a line Rihanna states, “ You mistaken my love I brought for you for foundation”. This reveals gender because it associates her with the typical emotions of a woman which amplifies her being a woman. “Work”reflects power because in a line she states, “But I wake up and act like nothings wrong, just get ready fi work, work, work, work, work, work”. Rihanna pretending that nothing is wrong and getting back to “work” reflects power because this is a way of her guarding her heart and pretending that everything is okay with a man she wants a deeper connection with but he only wants to have sex with her. This reveals the power that this man has over her and also the power that she has taken back to cope with her brokenness that he has caused her.

The location that I chose was the canteen of Morgan’s Student Center. What drew me to this location was its popularity by the students of Morgan. The time that I was in the canteen was at 4:30 on Wednesday. I noticed that most students that go in the canteen often don’t sit and eat, but they rather grab a bite and take their food to go. I noticed the sound of cash registers, multiple small talks amongst students and very long lines. What I did notice was that one of the registers was closed and there were chairs to block that side of the entrance. I visited the canteen again on Friday at the same time and the results were different. I noticed that both of the registers were open and there were not as many people in there as there was on Wednesday at the same time.

I’ve learned that most items that I buy are for my appearance, comfort, grooming, and clean space. These are things that I absolutely need and I do not mind spending the money for it. The things that I spend the least amount of money on are decor, linen, school supplies, and microwave and fridge which are among the things that I may not have to buy so often.
