Read on, adventurous one:

Aardwolves are an adorable member of the hyena family. They resemble canines, but are actually feliforms.

They have a bare black muzzle, cute big ears, black stripes on tan fur, and a crest of very long fur that goes from their head to tail.

They can be split into either two species or sub species, depending on who you ask. Either way, all aardwolves belong to the genus Proteles, which means "complete in the front," referencing the fact that their front feet have five toes in their back feet have two

The name aardwolf is also interesting. It comes from the Afrikaans "aard" which means dirt, and "wolf" which means... wolf. They're named this because they live in burrows!

They don't dig the burrows themselves though. They move into ones that other animals have vacated. The only digging done by them is for middens, which they use as toilets, (very tidy, very polite) and making a tiny hole for babies to retreat into in the end of a burrow.

Unlike other hyenas, aardwolves do not scavenge or hunt. They're insectivores! They eat one species of termite, and get skinny in the winter when that termite is less available. In one night, a singular aardwolf can eat hundreds of thousands of termites.

In order to maintain this lifestyle, an aardwolf pair will protect a territory with several termite mounds in it. They don't destroy the mounds, and don't eat too much from anyone mound either. If they were too, they risk increasing the number of soldier termites.

Aardwolves have several adaptations to eat termites. Their molars have devolved a bit and are only used to crush termite exoskeletons. Their saliva is very sticky, and works with the spiky bumps on their tongue to scoop up termites easily. Their mouth and throat skin is thick to be protected from any potential bites.

Aardwolves are of least concern, and they don't have any natural predators as adults. Babies may be eaten by snakes and black backed jackals, but an adult aardwolves biggest danger is actually humans.

They are sometimes hunted for sport, but more often shot by farmers who think that they are jackals, either due to not seeing them well or misinformation.

Going back to the before mentioned species/sub species, what is the difference? It is actually location! The two groups of aardwolves are separated by a forest. One group lives in southern Africa, and the other in east Africa. They are unable to intermingle because there are no termites in the forest lol.
