Thinking about. Franco and his relationship with his gender.
How masculinity is about performance, seeking not love from other men but validation, and how his defensive and fragile ego stemmed from growing up in a hyper-masculine environment that constantly belittled and undermined him in a time when gender roles were strictly enforced. "Being a man" so often means capability: sexual prowess, physical ability, emotional control.
Franco is not sexually capable. He has difficultly performing and can only do so when humiliated, submitting to a woman in a way not typically accepted in ideal forms of masculinity. Franco is not physically capable. He is short, fat, physically disabled, and relies on a gun for all his disputes. Franco does not know how to control his emotions. He has a fragile ego, a terrible trigger finger, and cries very often.
To "be a man" you cannot cry ever, you cannot be weak ever, you cannot be vulnerable ever, ask for help, give up, or be in certain submissive positions, especially in relation to women. If you're caught not being able to perform any of the skills required of a man, then it becomes a permanent wound on your masculinity. No one let's you live it down, especially other men.
His immediately antagonism with Leland, assuming Phyllis has a boyfriend and that he needs to kill this assumed boyfriend to "prove" himself; his childhood taught him there is no camaraderie among men, just ridicule, and it's better to hurt them first before they hurt you. He gets in a room with one and suddenly he's rearing his head and huffing like a bronco, ready to bolt. Anything can be a threat to his ego, even if he pretends it can't.
Franco feels the need to perform this idea of a hyper-masculine, aggressive, capable figure to prove (more to himself than anything) that nothing is wrong with him, no one can touch him, no one can hurt him. His father taught him that the way to gain respect and validation is to kill, so whenever his capibility is threatened his first reaction is to resort to violence to prove he IS capable, and don't you fucking forget it.
