‘Grimes Graves’ Neolithic Flint Mines, Norfolk, 22.8.17. This is the only place in the United KIngdom where you can go down and see the Neolithic Flint Mines. Between 2650 and 2100 BCE, Neolithic people dug more than 400 mines and pits here. This was about the same time that many of the stone settings of Stonehenge were being erected. The mines were to access the distinctive black flint (last picture). These mines were of high importance and the extract of flint was a highly ritualised and ceremonial process. Many hearths, offerings and votive tools and items have been found in the mines. Pictured is Pit 1 which is open to the general public.
