"Taluka and Emily 2024", 2024
Digital Image
a shoot i creative directed and styled featuring my friend emily! This was the first time we had hung out in a year or so, so we wanted the shoot to feel girly, playful and just an extension of the relationship we have with eachother. Doobies over tea, beanies and stripper heals, love heart underwear and chicken pillows!
INSPO:
Petra Collins is a Canadian artist, photographer, and filmmaker known for her distinctive style that blends dreamy, ethereal visuals with themes of femininity, youth, and intimacy. Here are some aspects of her work that inspire my shoot:
Soft, Dreamy Aesthetic: Collins often uses soft focus and pastel colors to create a dreamy, almost surreal quality in her images. This can be achieved through lighting, color grading, and post-production techniques
Feminine and Playful Themes: Her work frequently explores girlhood and the complexities of female identity, often incorporating playful and whimsical elements. This aligns perfectly with the girly and fun vibe i was aiming for.
Intimate and Personal Moments: Collins captures candid, intimate moments that feel personal and genuine. This can be reflected in the relaxed, natural interactions between me and Emily, emphasizing our close friendship.

"Earth to Taluka", 2024
Digital images to 29.7 x 42 cm scale
Body of work
This work was fun i love photoshop ! and this might be the only artwork i used text on (if you look really really hard)
These images have notes of derealisation, hallucination and disassociation. all things I have experienced in times of stress. I wanted to ambulate what it feels like coming home from sometime away and still having those stresses / problems that linger around in your safe space. Or in the case of the last image, when you come home from a festival and the memory and music then follow you into your bed.
Marcel (Hidden Reflection), 2009

Ryan McGinley is a celebrated contemporary photographer known for his vibrant, energetic, and often ethereal images that capture the essence of youth and freedom.
here are key aspects of his work that inspire my photoshoot, especially considering my themes of derealization, lingering stress, and the surreal experience of returning home:
Dynamic Movement: McGinley’s work often features subjects in motion, which can convey a sense of lingering festival energy and the chaotic, surreal feeling of derealisation.!!! incorporate dynamic poses or capture moments of movement to evoke this energy.
Natural Light and Color: He frequently uses natural light and vivid colors to create a dreamlike quality in his photographs.
??? Consider shooting during golden hour or using vibrant props and backdrops to enhance the surreal atmosphere of my images

"Ever Is Over All" (1997)
Audio Video Installation
Pipilotti Rist’s “Ever Is Over All” (1997) is a cornerstone in my exploration of video as a medium. This piece, which juxtaposes mundane scenes with surreal, fantastical elements, exemplifies how video can convey complex emotional and psychological states. Rist’s vibrant use of color and dynamic movement creates a dream-like atmosphere that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. This approach resonates with my interest in depicting the fragmented nature of memory and the subconscious.

"1620", 2024
Digital Images
photo shoot i did on the roofs of my old town. As teenagers this was our place to do stupid shit, hide stuff, have parties (for legal purposes that is a joke) and all around be silly and youthful. i even ate a pie from the pie cart. feeling like the perfect lismore teenage girl.
Inspo from Ryan Mcginley & Nan Goldin & Juergen Teller
Goldin: Known for her raw, candid photography that captures the intimate and sometimes gritty aspects of life, Goldin’s work inspires me to depict the genuine, unfiltered moments of my teenage escapades.
Juergen Teller: being inspired by Teller’s unpolished and spontaneous style add a sense of immediacy and authenticity to my photos. His ability to blend high fashion with raw, everyday moments help me create striking, memorable images.

"SwanGirl", 2024 - to be continued
aprox 80cm x 70cm
Acrylic, Spray paint, Plaster casting on a
wire frame.
The first time i saw a mask like this was by a an etsy creator "nymla". The donnie darko of it all hit some sort of a nerve within my 17 year old body and mask making was all i was interested in. Never left using plaster bandage as my material just because of affordability.
Tumblr media
I want this mask to be the muse for a short film i have been worrying since early december last year. I absolutely love the tactile "man made" aspect of my mask over the hyper realism. Makes it all the more creepy.

"Memories Tied. Bait, Spied", 2024
Single channel Digital Loop of installation
Dur. 54 seconds
This one was funnnn.
thought Dump !
diary expo on art work (what i noticed is that there's this sort of looming dread that floats around those i'm related to..... which is great because the hard conversations are able to be said earlier on. However I am now at that age where helping my depressed single mother out of a hole or taking care of my deeply ill uncle isn't just something i want to do. it's something that i'm responsible for. I mean as if i wouldn't help them anyway! and i get why every person i know has responded with "it's not your responsibility" to make me feel better about not helping my mum when she needs me. But it's just something as the eldest daughter that you do.)
I had to go back home (Lismore, NSW.) for a family emergency this weekend. Where I cleaned my mums house and got her into therapy. yippee!!! While doing so I found my old baby box, baby gifts and baby bracelet! I found my old stereo from when i was five and the old rugs my grandmother gave me when i was 9. Having all these beautiful memories of my life when mum wasn't so sad was a lot harder to digest then i realised so i decided to ambulate this ambient shrine like installation of the points in my life where nothing other than my own thoughts, feelings and love for my mummy existed.
INSPOO: "My Bed" (1998)
Audio Visual Installation
Tracey Emin
Through her influence, I have come to appreciate the significance of personal storytelling in art. Emin’s method of baring her soul through her installations has inspired me to create works that intimately portray my emotional and psychological states. By following her example, I aim to engage viewers on a deep, personal level, encouraging them to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.

"The Never Ending Lunch"
75cm x 100cm
Candle wax, acrylic, spray paint, posca pen, fine marker on canvas
current expansion of an artwork started a few weeks ago!
Painting of this scale is so tricky and i'm sick so there would be a very high chance there's snot on the canvas 😝
I ended up painting this artwork on the ground with the painting laying flat just so i didn't have to maintain my balance so hard
Yoshitomo Nara
One aspect of Nara’s art that particularly influences me is his exploration of childhood and innocence juxtaposed with darker, more introspective undertones. His use of childlike characters and imagery often conveys a sense of vulnerability and introspection, inviting viewers to reflect on deeper emotions and experiences. This balance between innocence and introspection resonates with my own interest in exploring the complexities of human emotion and experience.

In the midst of coming up with some tee shirt ideas!!!!! This work i created on my friends ipad (i am saving for my own but my goodness things are super expensive) and is a little ode to not only my obsession with all things miffy but also my community (the northern rivers and an emphasis on Nimbin, NSW) and its unified connection to well.... i mean.... you get the picture.
Will continue to find ways to learn more about digital art and have been finding the process of ethical printing a tricky one.
the shirt photo is just a mark up.

"Heartened Tarten"
60cm x 40 cm
Acrylic on Canvas
My dad's birthday was recently so i reimagined an old photo of My grandad, my father and I. He lives quite far away so excuse the fact that this is the only photo I have (he's not easy to get a hold of.... clearly) The name deceives from my family name "Macfarlane". A scottish family name that has its very own clan and tarten.

27 Digital Image Poem
Poem about current Australian Femicides. At the time 27 women had died in 2024 and it hit me really hard. I thought, jesus! that's how many bones we have in our hands isnt that a bit ironic. Then all of a sudden i felt this overwhelming streak of inspiration. Poetry has strictly been a personal endeavour so applying the words to the theme of the mouldy pomegranate (to reflect the dying nature of equality upon women in australia) solidified a sort of public affection to the writing. With a heavy heart I shared it to my social media and the responce was more supportive than i ever imagined. Will continue to write more poetry and see where this may lead in my visual art journey ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

"A walk in Cosmos Garden" 2024
12x16'
Acrylic on canvas
I had a dream I was walking through the brisbane botanical gardens and came across a little rabbit friend (shocker) that talked to me all the way home. We passed all the little ashgrovian queenslanders and the pretty australian wattles and spoke about how the classic imagery of brisbane makes it so fairytale like! I reimagined that storytelling into this piece and i love her with my whole entire heart

"Call on me", 2024
embossing on thick paper.
PROCESS:
Design Creation: The first step in embossing is to create the design or pattern that will be embossed onto the material. This design can be created using specialized software for digital embossing or by hand using more traditional methods.
Die Making: Once the design is finalized, a die or mould must be created. This die is typically made from metal, such as brass or zinc, and is crafted to match the desired design precisely. The raised areas of the die correspond to the areas that will be embossed on the material.
Preparation of Material: The material to be embossed, such as paper or leather, is prepared by placing it between the die and a counter. The counter is a flat, sturdy surface that supports the material during the embossing process.
Embossing Press: The prepared material, die, and counter are placed into an embossing press. The press applies pressure to the material, forcing it into the raised areas of the die and creating the embossed design.
Heat (Optional): In some cases, heat may be applied during the embossing process to help soften the material and make it more pliable. This can improve the quality of the embossed impression, especially when working with materials like leather.
Cooling and Finishing: After embossing, the material is allowed to cool and set, which helps to maintain the raised design. Depending on the material and desired finish, additional processes such as trimming, colouring, or sealing may be applied to complete the embossed product.
Project is on going... so far i want to incorporate the embossing or stamping into representing my female friendships :)

WINDOW IMAGING:
The concept of my work as a sticker on a window with the phrase "Have I not made myself clear?" presents a fascinating exploration of communication and perception. At first glance, the phrase seems straightforward, a simple inquiry into whether one's message has been understood. However, the inconsistency and warping of the writing on the sticker add layers of complexity to its meaning. The inconsistency in the writing could symbolize the ambiguity and uncertainty that often accompanies communication. Despite our best efforts to express ourselves clearly, our messages can become distorted or misunderstood through various factors such as tone, context, or personal interpretation. The warped nature of the writing might reflect how communication can be altered or obscured by external influences, much like how a window distorts the view outside. Moreover, the choice of a window as the surface for the sticker is significant. Windows is traditionally associated with transparency and clarity, allowing us to see in and out of a space. However, they can also act as barriers, separating us from what lies beyond or distorting our view of the world. In this context, the window serves as a metaphor for the barriers that hinder effective communication, whether linguistic, cultural, or psychological. By juxtaposing the phrase "Have I not made myself clear?" with the medium of a window and the warped writing, my work prompts viewers to reflect on their own experiences with communication and understanding. It challenges them to consider how clarity is often elusive and how we must navigate through layers of distortion and misinterpretation to truly connect with others. Ultimately, my work invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of human interaction and the constant quest for meaningful communication in an uncertain world.

"Heavenly Egg", 2024 15cm x 10.5cm
TASK ONE:
This was the first task for KVB217. The task asked us to create a work out of paper from a word in an italian ? dictionary.
My randomly picked word was "gaze". I chose to create a "biblically" accurate angel to incoroporate the word not only in a literal sense of an eye seeing, but also the "heavenly gaze"
I loved the colours except it looks like a cracked egg so I wish I didnt choose yellow.
Loved the use of cutting and tearing to create texture and dimension.
