Taiwan takes historic step toward same-sex marriage legalization

In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, Taiwan’s constitutional court positioned the country to become the first in Asia to recognize same-sex marriages.

Previously, Taiwan’s civil code had stipulated that marriage must be between a man and a woman. 

But in a majority opinion, the court ruled that the ban on same-sex unions ran afoul of two articles of the country’s constitution that upholding human dignity and equality in the eyes of the law, according to the Associated Press. Read more (5/24/17)

“I have become tired of cinema. The so-called entertainment value of films in recent years, the mechanisms of the market, and the constant pandering to popular taste, all disgust me. I don’t feel the need to keep making films or, to put it more bluntly, to make the kinds of films that expect the patronage of cinema audiences anymore. I keep asking myself: what is cinema? Why make films? Who am I doing this for? Who is the mass audience? Are they the people who watch Spielberg movies? “To me writing and directing go hand in hand. You can’t separate the two responsibilities. Writing, from the very beginning of the idea, is like the blinking of a light bulb in your head, and until completion the whole production process is writing, one way or the other. Shooting is writing, editing is writing, pre-production is writing, and auditioning for the cast is also writing. Improvisation is also part of writing. I think I’m fortunate that I started my career not in the tradition of the industry. We had to improvise a lot, to find alternative ways to accomplish something. It makes me feel lucky that I trained as an engineer. Engineering is a practical thing. I call it basically problem-solving, and nothing else. When I started directing, this training gave me psychological readiness. You had to make a thousand decisions a day. Especially in an industry in such poor condition, you had to improvise to make something work. Even to this day, that’s part of the process.”
