“Common? It is common to lose a limb?” Lyra looked sad about that. She’d noticed a few of the villagers with crafted limbs but never really thought to question just how it happened.

“You’ve done well adapting to your world. Impressive little human.” Kiara chuckled. Lyra nodded in agreement.

“Your crafted limb is amazing. And I’m glad you and Toothless are friends!”

Lyra was giggling at the two.

“You’re heart mates. It’s really cute.” They had a strong bond. Lyra would have been worried if they didn’t court each other. It was adorable.

“Er… I don’t know.” Lyra looked to Kiara. The elder looking hesitant to answer.

“Yes. There are ones that have dragain like wings. But those fae are not ones I seek out.” Kiara watched as the dragons in her circle played. Altair laying down in eyeing her back.

“They are a clan best left alone.” Shaking out of her thoughts the fae looked to Astrid.

“Long flights drain both magic and physical strength. So I needed to rest as my magic built back up.”

“I think I’ve only flown a few hours at most. It drains me much faster.” Lyra spoke up. Speaking of being drained, “I feel much better by the way. Thank you for bringing us here. And thank you two. I don’t think my wings have felt this good in years!” She looked over her wings proudly.

“What will you do with the broken feathers? Shall I destroy them?” Kiara plucked a feather from the pile and looked over it. Lyra looked uncertain.

“I was thinking I could keep the best ones and make pendants.” Kiara raised a brow as Lyra looked uncertain.

“Pendants? Or healing charms?” Her voice was accusing and by Lyra’s smile it seemed she’d been caught.

“Hiccup!” Lyra ran up to the chief, an excited grin on her face.

“Are you busy? I have something to show you!” She took his hand and pulled him towards Altair and Toothless.

“You know how last month the lightning strike caused the large forest fire?” Stopping in front of the dragons the fae all but buzzing in excitement. If her wings were visible they’d be fluttering.

“I did a thing!” She couldn’t wait to show him.

Knocking on @dragonmasterhiccup's door, Jack couldn't wait to tell Hiccup the good news. "Come on, you lazy bum. Open the door."

"A-Astrid? Come on, say something?" Watching her fall felt as if it had been in slow motion, and he couldn't get to her fast enough. Even Toothless hadn't caught it in time, being too far away to break her fall. When she spoke, he let out a sigh of relief. "You had me worried." Cupping her cheek with her hand, his expression changed, becoming more questioning. "What happened? You never fall off your dragon..." He held his arms out towards her, wordlessly offering assistance if she needed it. Hiccup knew she wasn't one to accept it typically, but there have been enough times she had for him to know to offer it. Of course, he would either way. "No, you're not. Something is hurting you, I can see that much." That grimace didn't go unnoticed by him, and while Astrid was tough, it's not always the best idea to push through the pain and ignore it. "Toothless is working on getting her attention. But I think she'll notice you're not there and come looking for you soon enough..."

Astrid took a deep breath, trying to ignore the sharp sting radiating up her leg as she shifted her weight. She met Hiccup's concerned gaze, the worry in his voice tugging at something deep inside her. Still, she was as stubborn as always, she wasn't about to crumble. Not at a time like this.

She appreciated his offer to help, but waved it off with a small smirk, "Hiccup, really. I'm fine!" she said, her voice firm, though the strain behind it was hard to miss. She wasn't one to usually let a fall get to her, but this time it had been different and just thinking about it caused her to be hit by a wave of nausea and dizziness.

"I - I don't know. Something spooked her. I don't know what it was, but I have never seen her react like that before" she said, thinking back to the sudden, frantic jolt mid - flight that had sent her spiraling down to the ground.

Her hand moved instinctively to the axe she always carried, as her eyes quickly flickered back to the sky intently searching for her dragon, before she once again turned her attention to Hiccup.

"Whatever it was, we need to figure out what we are dealing with. Stormfly doesn't get scared like that for no reason." Astrid's voice was more steady now, her determination cutting through the lingering pain. She may be hurt, but she wasn't about to let it slow her down and she didn't want Hiccup to worry anymore than he already had.

She listened carefully to Hiccup as he empathized with her. Some words she sort of understood as synonyms, but it would take her a bit of time to understand the particulates of it all. But she understood the concept...and it did feel like a larger version of the trappers' cage. If she hadn't met Hiccup and his island of humans and dragons, the risk might not have been worth it in her mind. Her brothers could've gotten in serious danger because of her.

But that didn't happen...and she learned more about the world than she ever could have in the Hidden World.

Stranger couldn't help but note the visible discomfort on Toothless's face as her brothers openly talked about the possibility of his species being deliberately hunted to extinction...and she couldn't help but give them a sharp glare and a low growl. Guys, come on! Have some tact, would you?

Naturally, Streak and Sunchaser bowed their heads in apology, averting their gazes from the alpha, even letting out a couple fake sneezes to demonstrate that they meant no offense. Seabreak, while initially annoyed with Stranger, did the same begrudgingly. He really didn't mean any offense...but he still held out the hope that there were others of Toothless's species out there someone.

There had to be someone...right?

Carefully, she listened to Hiccup's tale of dragons and Vikings, filling in gaps with drawings and pantomiming whenever necessary. It shocked her that he was considered an outcast among his own people because he couldn't kill dragons, but it was when he saw himself in his enemy that he knew he couldn't be like them.

One thing that surprised her was that he was the one that actually hurt and downed Toothless and had fully intended to kill him...but couldn't. Wouldn't. Because he was scared and realized that their fear was the same. Stranger couldn't help but wonder if that was what her mother saw in her when she found her...if Moondance looked at Stranger as a stranded orphaned girl, daughter of the enemy of dragons, and saw...well, a child. Her eggs would hatch within a few hours, so was she thinking of them? How Stranger's fear and innocent eyes reflected the same?

Even before her brothers were born, Moondance fought with the alpha to keep her...that had to have meant something.

Hiccup put in the effort to help fix what he had done to Toothless and in the process, they had become something more than allies for convenience. They were friends - family, even. Did Moondance feel the same way? Now that Stranger remembered clearer, she was fairly certain that the Viking ship she was on with her mother had been besieged by dragons. Was Moondance part of that siege? Was taking in and raising Stranger her way of making things right the same way Hiccup treating Toothless's disability that he caused was?

She didn't really know...she and her brothers left the nest for a long time and her mother had been at a distance ever since. Always present...but never as close as when she was younger.

But what shocked her most was not that everyone else changed and cohabited with dragons, but that Toothless and Hiccup were responsible for the defeat of the queen of Hellheim's Gate, staring at them absolutely dumbfounded and shocked, her jaw hanging open. "You...you killed the Red Death?" Staring at the Night Fury, Stranger crooned both impressed and astonished. You were the ones who killed the Red Death?!

All at once, all three of her brothers snapped their heads in unison towards the alpha, pupils narrowed into sharp shocked slits, ears up as though they were trying to figure out if they had heard their sister correctly. No one could defy the control of an alpha species dragon, let alone a queen, but Toothless did? Toothless was responsible for the fall of the Red Death? And alongside a human?

Stranger turned to Hiccup, swallowing thickly as she stammered a bit, trying to find her tongue again. "We - we heard she died years ago. Didn't know how."

Hiccup nodded, understanding immediately. "Dragons...they like the wide open spaces. Flying as far as they can...if there's walls, it feels suffocating." Realizing she may not yet know that word, he quickly added, "Uh, cramped, constricting...like that trapper cage, I guess?"

Oh. This, he understood completely. Looking out towards the ocean, he replied, "I know what you mean. There's so much out there to see, to explore..." Looking back at Stranger, he continued, "but, there's also danger. It's a risk, but... sometimes, it's worth it."

Toothless looked up at Stranger, trilling. He was grateful that she wanted to help, but he was starting to lose hope that there were any others out there like him.

The Night Fury looked at each of the other dragons as they discussed his species, curious of their thoughts. His head lowered though at the prospect that someone was hunting down and killing his kind specifically.

This was not something he wanted to think about.

At Stranger's question, Hiccup rubbed the back of his neck. "That...that is a long story. Let me see if I can give you the short version..."

Hiccup began to tell the tale of how he met Toothless, how they got to trust each other, and how they fought the Red Death.

He tried to use simpler terms, as Stranger was still getting the hang of Norse. For anything he had trouble describing, he found a nearby stick, drawing illustrations in the mud until it made sense to her.

As the story concluded, he tossed the stick away, gesturing to the village around them. "...and now, we live in peace, as equals. We're friends of dragons, and while they don't need us to take care of them, I think they appreciate what we do around here."

Stepping out of the caravan and approaching the door, she saw a familiar face in the distance. There was no doubt Hiccup was aware of her arrival. As the two figures drew closer, a smile was placed upon her lips as she hurried over to embrace her friend.

“Hiccup, it’s so lovely to see you again, my friend.”

Holding the embrace for a moment, she pulled away, before kneeling down to hug his daughter.

“You must be Zephyr. Your father has told me a lot about you.”

She politely waved at her before standing to her feet. Her demeanor changed into a more sorrow one and anyone could see through it from her eyes. Esmeralda let out a long sigh.

“It’s Frollo… I’m certain he’s gathering all of his soldiers and coming for my people.” There was worry in her tone. “I wouldn’t ask anyone for help, but I’m in need of your help before it’s too late.”

She’d let him process the information.

Living on Berk was a dream. Lyra was learning fast from Gothi to be a healer and Altair was finally warming up to being around other dragons again! The two often flying in the evenings together. And Lyra exploring the forests for plants and herbs. She felt alive. Free.

It was only three months later when the dream would shatter. Lyra was working on a garden she’d placed by her hut. Her home! She smiled bright. Altair resting near by when she suddenly raised her head. Scenting the air before hissing. Her eyes sharp and teeth bared. The dragon all but pushing Lyra into the hut.

“Altair? What’s gotten into you? Wh-“ she covered her mouth to stop the panic that bubbled up. Thanking the stars the hut was big enough for both her and Altair to hide inside before they were seen.

Two large men, though smaller than most of those on Berk, approached the village. Dragon hide armor with metal spikes adorned them. One with a sword on his hip and the other with an axe. And hanging from both, iron shackles.

“We request a meeting with the chief of this place.” One of them called out.

"That's good to hear." Jack said, inclining her head in acknowledgement. "Yeah, I'm excited to see her too." Jack enthused. She poured herself another cup of tea, just as the door opened to reveal said girls.

Knocking on @dragonmasterhiccup's door, Jack couldn't wait to tell Hiccup the good news. "Come on, you lazy bum. Open the door."

Astrid groaned slightly, her eyes blinking rapidly as she struggled to focus on Hiccup in front of her. It had all happened so quickly, one moment she was soaring confidently on Stormfly and the next she was colliding against the unforgiving ground.

"Well, that sure wasn't my best landing" she stated with a faint smile, trying not to show just how much this had rattled her.

Biting her lip in determination she slowly started to push herself up from the ground, as her vision finally began to clear, the world around her growing sharper with each passing second .

Taking a deep breath, she grimaced at the sudden pain shooting up her leg. Still, she forced herself to focus on something more pressing - her dragon.

For me, the first song that came up was ‘forwards beckon rebound’ by Adrianne Lenker!

It’s a ‘sad’ song, I know, but it’s one of my current favorites (I love all of her music)

I don’t really know what I’d associate it with per se, I mean, it’s in some of my OC playlists, so I guess I could associate it with that? 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I love everything about it, it’s just so good 😍 I can even play it on guitar!!
