HEBOT II, by Powertran Cybernetics, in Hobby Electronics November 1982. "Three years on and HEBOT II, while in many ways a very similar beastie, is considerably improved both in its control system and in operation, because it is designed to be used in conjunction with a microcomputer. Specifically, it is designed to be run by a ZX81, but the control system is quite simple and any microcomputer capable of input/output operations, whether via a dedicated I/O port or via an expansion port (as used by the ZX) can be used to control the machine. A memory-mapped interface board for the ZX81 computer is presented as part of this project, and further issues of Hobby Electronics will explore the possibilities of other interface boards and computers. … The significance of computer control is that, whereas the original HEBOT had only a small 'library' of hard-wired routines, HEBOT II has almost unlimited capabilities within the restraints of available memory and computer speed." – HEBOT II, Hobby Electronics November 1982.

Original Gangster: They were nothing but unthinking robots. While fun, trying to add any depths to the series proves impossible, and instead leans more on slapstick comedy.
X: Dr. Light decided to build a real AI, but realized that putting a real AI in a nearly invincible robot was... problematic, so put him in stasis to test his morality. He's uncovered by Dr. Cain, who decides to blatantly copy him, and make no effort to make sure his new, fully sentient Reploids were moral. Some of them started going "Maverick", and the days of Humanity seemed numbered, as the damage caused by these Mavericks dramatically escalated, up to an including a colony drop. The series is known for much more dynamic action and deeper, emotional stories, as the main character is conflicted about killing Mavericks, and whole armies fall to darkness. This is unfortunately the attempt at make-it-better remakes that changed the map order, despite the fact you physically cannot get to many places without your rocket assist.
Legends: One of the early attempts at 3d. Almost all early attempts at 3d were bad, at least in 3d controls. But, this game has a warm place in many hearts. And, you get to play as Roll, whom has super vacuum powers.
NT: What if Megaman was a programme that fights other programmes? Relies in the common late 90's/early aughts complete misunderstanding of hacking, but it is filled with interesting characters, both real and virtual. That said, it was patently obvious they were trying to create a world dedicated to alternate revenue channels. Good thing e-commerce wasn't sophisticated enough yet, or the schoolyard fights over Pokemon would seem like child's play.
Zero: The true successor to X. Keiji Inafune originally wanted to make Zero, Megaman, but Capcom was basically like, "fuck you, make Megaman blue and less edgy". So, X was meant to be a short series that lead to Zero in the future. X5 was meant to be the final X game, and then transition into Zero. Capcom was like $.$, and made more X games, that are so terrible it's better to never play them. Because Zero was where Inafune wanted to go. In Zero, X has gotten tired of Mavericks trying to wipe out Humanity, and decided to wipe out Reploids. Zero, with the help of Reploid resistance, and... Elves... (sentient computer programmes), fought back.
ZX: Humans and Reploids have merged, and... honestly, no mention of Keiji Inafune, who doesn't like to spend his entire life on one franchise, and instead wants to create bounded stories that have a beginning and end. So, Humans are Robots, Robots are Humans, and you get to pick the sex of your protagonist! Something-something ancient artifacts that literally turn the Humans/Robots into pale imitations of the original heroes.
Shooting Star is the distant descendant of NT, and I don't really know much, other than it's in space!

Hello all! If you’ve followed me since last year, you might know what this post is.

That’s right, it’s September ‘24’s Backlog Report
Mega Man X3
I’ve heard good things comparatively about this game, but being completely honest, I think this might have been my least favorite in the first half of the X series.
Really the only track to grab me was the intro stage theme, while everything else just wasn’t really my cup of tea.
As for gameplay, it’s mostly great, with my only complaints being that the enemies hit like a sack of hammers, and the upgrades and extras are a bit too out of the way. Even those complaints though get mollified by the armor upgrades. I wish more Mega Man games had a stage map. (The overworld map in ZX does not count.)
Mega Man X4
This is probably one of the best Mega Man games, period.
The presentation is smooth and excellent on almost all fronts. Even the infamous voice acting can be gotten around by playing the Japanese dub (which is the complete opposite of bad). It’s quite clear that Capcom wanted to be ambitious for their attempt to bring the Blue Bomber into the PlayStation generation. The mostly succeeded.
Offering nitpicks though, I will say that the extra life and weapon energy tanks were almost useless. The extra lives because even getting a game over doesn’t set you back that far, and the weapon tanks because you’re hardly going to need more than one or two to complete any given stage.
Fire Emblem Echoes
I preface this by saying I only did the main story, with no postgame or dlc. (This means I will not be joining my mutual @felikatze in Fell-Dragonology.)
This one is a bit of a nail for Fire Emblem fans. Plenty see it as the height of the series, with a gripping narrative and a well-balanced cast, involving the player in two stories that play off of each other. Others see it as a dull slog through uninspired plots and maps.
I have to say that I can see both sides. I absolutely loved the story, and that was definitely helped by the top-notch voice cast. However, the gameplay is more than a bit messy.
I don’t know if this was unique to my run, or if the game is coded to just hand out bad level ups consistently, but it felt like every time I tried to bring a character up to snuff, they’d be hit with bad level after bad level, leaving my with snipers that couldn’t snipe, and paladins that couldn’t pal. For that matter, support conversations have been made unnecessarily worse, by having them take place on the maps themselves and not showing who can support with who until they fight together. (Clair and Clive deserved a chance to be siblings, dammit!) While I find the idea of dungeon exploration in a strategy game intriguing, I don’t think it was handled altogether too well. The dungeons are too spacious for how simple they are, the pre-existing encounters respawn too often, and the maps that do try to add interest tend to be irritating. Part of my irritation may just be from me bing bad at strategy games, but part of it is in fact the wide open, un-obstacled maps that you must move units across one, by, one, for turns on end.
I still enjoyed the game. More specifically, the characters and plot were enough to keep me engaged(Heh) from beginning to end. Even with my gripes, I still recommend this game.

I am currently playing Morbid Gamer's Ultimate Decades Challenge! At this time, we are in the 1330s! I have given this LP a supernatural spin with real life event parallels, so I'd like to consider it "history adjacent." I really like telling stories and making up reasons for why my sims act the way they do, so if you like semi-narrative simming, perhaps you'd like my videos!
please refer to this list triggers.
Below the cut are a few of the mods + death wheels I use, mostly found in Morbid's discord server! I will do my best to reblog as many bits of great CC that I find, but feel free to ask if there is anything specific you're looking for!

The history of the Dutch table top rpg 'Queeste'
A couple of days ago Joop Oele passed away. He was a Dutch tabletop rpg pioneer. I guess outside his hometown in the Netherlands hardly anyone has heard about him. To honour him, I send out this bit of rpg history about his game 'Queeste' out into the world wide web. Please reblog ( @vintagerpg ) This is an abridged version of a Dutch article I helped put together last year for fantasywereld.nl
Guided fantasy
It was 1979. Joop Oele and a few of his friends had never heard of anything like Dungeons & Dragons. They were experimenting with all kinds of games and role-playing games. At that time role-playing was used in therapy sessions. Joop and his friends turned it into games and a fantastic journey. In a group of people, there was one leader who initiated the game. They all started lying on the floor in a darkened room. Usually, Joop initiated the game by visualizing a landscape. There were no attributes or rules for the game.
Somehow a story always emerged in those sessions, a story created by the people who participated. It was like moving the magic glass in a spiritist session. The glass is moved by many hands without anyone knowing which way it will go.
Joop used this setup of the game for many years to come. Also, in game sessions with his son when he was about seven years old. Usually, they started in an air castle where they used a flying mattress to visit all kinds of places.
Another path that led to the development of Queeste was a line of wargames Joop developed called Dukes game. It was played on a large board with wooden units that had all kinds of abilities, represented by blocks of wood with coloured pins in them. For example, a unit had a certain speed, which could be increased by giving it a horse.
Another inspiration for Queeste was a game Joop had designed in 1978, the Labyrinth game. That game consisted of 49 rooms, laid out in a matrix of seven by seven. The middle room contained a rose, and was the final goal of the game. Each of these rooms contained a variable number of doors, some of which could only be opened from one side, and a person who asked a multiple choice question with as many answers as there were doors in that room. The correct answer led to a door that provided access to the room that led most directly to the rose. By giving correct answers, and imagining the labyrinth, you had to try to reach a final goal as quickly as possible.
Many elements of a TTRPG began to form from various sources of inspiration.

Queeste
Because Queeste was developed in isolation from other well-known role-playing games of the time, it had its own look and feel. Joop was also a graphic artist. He envisioned that you would have a picture of every location and every place you visited in the game. You could put those little drawings together to form a complete overview map of the area. It gives the first adventures an unprecedented eye for detail and focus on where you ended up as a player.
Instead of the familiar set of versatile dice, Joop didn't have much more at his disposal than the regular six-sided dice and coins you could toss. He developed a system where for a test with a property you could toss as many coins as that property counted points (+1D6). This immediately gave the game tactile value. Some players just love to have their hands full of chips (or dice) and throw them on the table with a dramatic gesture.
The setup Joop had in mind was not future proof. Drawing so many pictures was time-consuming. The detailed focus on the environment was also less necessary after the first few adventures. Most groups gradually switched to a more verbal dynamic. The casting with the many fishes also proved a bit clumsy. An auxiliary program was soon developed, for the Synclair ZX Spectrum.
The influence of guided fantasy can be seen strongly in the first quest stories. The players step into a world unknown to them: it is true portal fantasy, and with the way it happens it symbolizes how you descend into the more creative and intuitive part of your consciousness: The land of dreams.

Guilds and magic system
The game developed while playing with his group of friends, and not long after that came the guilds and stories. Joop did not develop these on his own. Joop came up with a number of guilds; including the Temple Knights, Sun Riders, Wolve Women and Druids. Of course, there also had to be Mages, but the game system for that was devised by Rob Meijer, who based it loosely on Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea. As players, you could weave your own spells using words from a magical language. All the guilds are beautifully and eloquently elaborated, and especially the magic system is unique. The players of Joop's first group had a lot of influence on the development of the game; both on the stories and the guilds.

Joop started a game publishing company he called Knossos in 1979 with the material that had been created, and he marketed Queeste in a box. In it were the game rules, loose cards with the accompanying illustrations, a set of simple wooden chits and a die, and the first adventure Tocht naar de Onderwereld (Journey to the underworld). They were sold throughout the Netherlands, but particularly in the Nijmegen region, where Joop himself lived.
Not long after the first box, the second adventure, Grint, a charming booklet appeared in A5 format. A little later, the third adventure Tigris appeared in A4 format. This was the format in which Joop published the magazine Queeste. The magazine contained Queeste adventures, as well as background information and additional game rules. The adventures Oosterterpe, Sardon and Slotmar appeared in that magazine.
It soon became apparent that publishing the game was not a great commercial success. And drawing all the pictures and publishing the magazine was time consuming. In fact, each group played much faster than Joop would ever be able to publish adventures. Every group that had bought the Queeste box, without having a direct line to Joop themselves, had to make up their own adventures to continue.
In the 1990ies all the rules and storybooks for Queeste were re-edited and published to make the complete campaign and ruleset available for future players. The pdf’s are still available as online download.

Mega Man ZX
Despite this having a godawful map for a metroidvania game I still loved ZX a lot. It has neat abilities, tight controls & fun bosses. IDK at the end of the day, it just felt really cool to explore a deceptively large world using MM mechanics

2024 Game Clear #11 Mega Man ZX Advent
This is largely the last mega man platformer that I hadn't played and beaten yet- there are some technically like maybe ill suffer through the DOS games sometimes and also if you count Mighty No. 9 as a mega man game then yeah I haven't played those yet but its pretty much just RPGs and oddities at this point. It also obviously the last game in the Zero/ZX collection that i had yet to clear which is significance because that collection is what started this misguided attempt to slowly playthrough every mega man game back in 2021 so to have that collection completely behind me now is kinda crazy.
I played through this twice doing a Ashe run and a Grey run respectively and while the changes are pretty minimum I am glad i did because I think I would've left with a little bit of a bad impression if i didn't replay it due to external stuff making me frustrated during the end game, cause me to play bad, making me even more frustrated! My Grey playthrough was much smoother, a good reminder that sometimes these games are better the second time after you know what your doing and man yeah this game rules.

What an improvement from first game, in the first game it very much felt like the search action game design and the Mega Man game design were getting in each other ways and not really melding together well. It feels a lot better balanced here. I will say that I think the overall aesthetic™ is a little stronger in the first game but y'know that comes at the cost of getting across the map being a pain so it's a fair trade.
It's also kinda nice to have a subseries that deals in the X series terminology of Reploids, Mavericks, A-Trans etc without being super bleak at all times lol.
This story does feels like it was written more for Grey than Ashe, I didn't really understand why Ashe- the non amnesic was so desperate to learn her past when her intro seemed to set her up as someone chasing the future rather than the past, so it's a bit odd

The voice acting pretty funny though I've been quoting Thetis's "I won't give up💅" to my friends a lot. looking through the folks involved it seems to be alot of Shenmue alumni or are only credited on this, one of the actors I looked at had credits on the original dub of Symphony of the Night, Shenmue, Baten Kaitos & X7 the forest gump of cheesy game dubs. But this honestly it isnt anywhere near the worst mega man voice acting out there, nobody audibly flubs their lines and like the best cheesy dubs there alot of line delivery that are pretty memorable im sure if i grew up with this game would live in my head like dubs such as Sonic adventure and Beyblade do. I mean even only playing this twice Atlas's "History of the world, History of the war" got stuck in my head just because it's odd rhymical delivery.
Also Zero and X's X7 actors are in this cast but not as model Z and X I just think that kinda funny.
Shame that we'll probably never return to this world in a meaningful way because I still have alot of questions about this world: What's Ciel up to? I'd love to learn more about the biometal holders, is Thomas teased plan related to Legends? since the other Biometal holders survived the crash does that mean Model Z is alive and other enemy control?, will we ever address Model A just being Axl? so many possibilities for the future of this story

RetroGaming Shorts Part 079 - Camelot
Camelot 1983 (ZX-81)
Camelot is another sort of old school proto-CRPG, with a board wargame map of regions rather than a typical terrain map of squares. It has graphic adventure style graphics for showing encounters or non-encounters, resulting in sort of a hybrid between graphic text adventures (proto-point-and-clicks) and CRPG mechanics.
Anyway, it could be good game design inspiration for a hybrid point-and-click with CRPG mechanics … even a graphical MUD or something …

Old Dutch Parsonage

Now available on the Gallery "Old Dutch Parsonage" by "Ladyofthesims". This is my first time loading a lot to the Gallery or here, so any ideas for building or taking better pictures is welcome.
In the real world, the Old Dutch Parsonage is located in Somerset County, New Jersey and is on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. I discovered the house in a book titled Historic and Memorial Buildings of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
More information about the house and its history can be found here - http://www.wallacehouseassociation.org/

Dream:
What I remember is all over the place, so I don't know if these were bits of the same dream or different dreams.
The first bit I remember is a field I am in with someone else. We have targets set up in the field and are practicing our shooting. The field morphs into a beach beside a large city. The other person and I start talking about the ending of season three of Attack on Titan. Apparently, a lot of people didn't like the ending. I see the ending, and it was a bunch of titans fighting, then they turn back to human, and they have a lot of chunks taking out of them from the fight. One guy had his hand bitten off, and another was missing part of his shoulder.
Now, I am back home. Some other girl is with me, and she is throwing out this massive computer. I save it and put it on the counter and tell my parents about it. It has about four or more motherboards in it, and a couple are bent. I then decide that I need to file my taxes. I lie about my state to get a larger refund and head down stairs to fill it out. I have my computers in my room, and I start filling things out, though I apparently have to scan some documents to send them in. Now, I am somewhere else, a class room? I am programming on the ZX Spectrum while Tru TV World Dumbest is playing on a projector nearby. It isn't the normal show, but, like, a remake. I think it was on the History Channel, and there was more of an educational aspect. I am now in the show. Some guys are doing some prank, and I start beating them up and drag them to a police officer.
The last thing I remember, though whether it was a different dream or not is unsure. I was watching a YouTube video about WWII. It is talking about America's aircraft carriers and how they help win the war against Japan. However, when showing a map of the Pacific, there is a massive island next to New Zealand. The guy starts talking about how no one lives on the island despite being a quarter of the size of Australia. Apparently, people did live there, but a bad hurricane wiped out the entire island. We see a map of a town from last year, and an updated map where the whole town is gone. I am now on the island in an area surrounded by mountains. These mountains are absurdly tall and cover more than half the sky.
Analysis:
Honestly, this dream was all over the place. I did file my taxes last week, so that is probably why it showed up. I did lie about my state to get out of paying state taxes from my internship to my home state. Don't tell the IRS, though.
