Random thoughts regarding different fandoms:

(I've seen/read these, I just don't engage with the fandoms that much. These are just thoughts based on what I have seen of the fandoms.).

Death Note: Endless memes. Constant poking fun at all the overthinking going on. Putting these dramatic characters in goofy scenes about cake and friendship. The jokes never get old for me. I don't see much discourse, maybe an occasional conversation about whether or not Kira was right. 😆

ATLA: Zuko getting teased. Kataang and Zutara battling it out while Zukka laughs and slowly rises higher, taking more and more people as it goes. I'm not that interested in the ships, but Sokka ships are the best. NATLA wins the "not as bad as you could've been award" and "the effects were decent". Lots of fun analysation.

Percy Jackson: I feel Nico is a fan favourite. The main discourse I've seen for the fandom as a whole is whether or not Annabeth treats Percy well and whether or not Piper is annoying. A lot of people compare Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (the characters), and those who have read both seem to agree Percy is better. Like ATLA, there's a new live-action series that is a mixed bag, but much better than the old, horrible live-action movie (and sequel) in the past.

Zelda: DOWN WITH KOROKS vs STOP KOROK ABUSE. Everyone loves Sidon senpai. Glory to Master KOHGA. Most of the stuff I see right now is BotW/TotK related, but there's still some good stuff for other games, as well as the AUs people do with different Links meeting. Midna is the best sidekick.

Hazbin Hotel: I'm wary since there's LOOOOTS of discourse in this one. The fans can be pretty funny, though. I love the song edits and that there's a whole ship tag for Vox's unrequited obsession with Alastor. I also like watching people analyse the characters and writing.

Helluva Boss: Well...I once again like watching people discuss the writing. But I am hesitant to engage with any fans because I have a weird relationship with this show and don't think I really qualify as a fan. 😅 I watch it because it's so bizarre to me I can't look away. One time I gave characters different colour schemes for fun, and I got a bunch of annoyed asks from someone taking it too seriously. 😆

She-Ra: Catra Applesauce Meowmeow is a poor little meowmeow. Cat. I like the cat memes. I also love the comparisons between Scorpia and Kronk. Entrapdak is probably one of the better ships, yet has haters for some reason. The accusations have the same vibes as Beauty and the Beast accusations.

Owl House: Tons of Lumity. Personally, I'm more invested in Eda and her relationships with the other characters. Belos and Hunter get compared to Ozai and Zuko. Hunter is very popular. Everyone side eyes Disney for what they did. HOOTY SUPREMACY HOOT HOOT.

Miraculous: The Adrien vs Marinette discourse makes my brain hurt, but I'm glad we all pretty much agree Astruc does everyone dirty. Canon? What's canon? Usually I like and try to follow canon. Not here. Who tries to follow canon in Miraculous? The fans write the show better than he does. Love all the fan comics I see for this show. Chloe could've been more interesting. We all make fun of Smooth-Brain Gabe. We came for the Love Square and then started to hate it. Then Emonette and Emodrien came and reignited our interest.

Here's a vague outline of each:

Oscar: Arnook is woken up at dawn by Sokka, his employee, who demands first a raise, then a promotion, and then the hand of his daughter. Arnook kicks him out. there's some kind of love-square between Sokka, Yue, Suki and Hahn except it's just two normal couples in which half of them have the wrong name for the other.

La Demoiselle d'Avignon: basically just a cute love story between a diplomat from France/The Fire Nation and a princess from an arctic realm. Sokka becomes a music composer. Ty Lee has her own ballet company.

Les tontons flingueurs: Ozai dies and his will entrusts both his whole criminal empire AND his teenage daughter in the care of Iroh, who had managed to leave that life behind him years ago. He comes back, tries his best to keep the girl under control (and hide from her that her dad died) as well as the whole crime syndicate, which is tough because Ozai made a lot of enemies before dying. Zhao is gay. JeongJeong and Piandao are brothers.

Le Grand Blond: In order to force Mai to admit she's bugged Azula's flat (they're both spies) Azula frames a guy as being "her best agent" so Mai focuses her efforts on him. Said guy, Sokka, is just minding his own business and doesn't even realize people have been siked on him.

La Grande Vadrouille: either Toph and Zuko or Lando and han Solo help three guys (Katara/Sokka/Aang or Obi-Wan/Luke/Leia) get to a neutral zone after they get shot down over an occupied city.

Le Viager: a family tries to kill a guy to inherit. He's blissfully unaware of that. They all end up killing each other accidentally everytime they try to kill him. Thinking of something with Discworld characters perhaps? but i don't know discworld well enough to pull it off methinks.

Okay, I'm guessing some of the list, since this now looks like a guessing game: 13 is Jess and Rory from Gilmore Girls. 2 is Irenedes, Queen's Thief. One of those films is Steve and Peggy. And I *want* to say Zutara's on the TV shows list but I don't think it is, I think it's in the Honourable Mentions.

oh wow I totally did not intend for number 2 to trick you like that!! Irenides comes in at #7 (it's not an OTP until someone loses a limb)

JESS AND RORY

given the fact that I actually screamed and grabbed whichever brother was sitting next to me when I saw it the first time, it's gotta go to the time when he chases her down in the town square and rory says "fine, let's hear it. I've thought a lot about this: what would jess say to me, what could he possibly say?" and jess says "I love you" and then walks away. he's crazy

all gilmore girls ships are, at best, fucked up (affectionate), with the possible exception of lane and dave, but jess and rory do definitely achieve (affectionate) status.

"All You Had to Do Was Stay", by Taylor Swift, because "I think I may have loved you, but I have to let it go" = "it could have been easy / all you had to do was stay"

they've got a little of that good good Han/Leia energy?? because he's always leaving and yet he is really getting better, and she has all these expectations on her but he really sees her.

I live for Jess and Rory in their friendship era, so my preferred AU is always one which gets rid of Dean early but keeps them in their friendship and lets that grow

they didn't make the list! I was extremely picky with my tv show ships, because a lot of them get poisoned in the long run (and not in a fun way) so if specific moments make me insane but the big picture leaves me cold, I left them off

STEVE AND PEGGY

my favorite moment of theirs is actually that last shot of Endgame of their dance!! truly a non-verbal MOMENT, so much is communicated!!!!!

it's Captain America we're talking about, obviously they're wholesome (affectionate)

maybe it just came on my shuffle or maybe it's the perfect song for every good ship out there, but "This Love" by Taylor Swift. "these hands had to let it go free and this love came back to me"

they have that rare thing that is first love and true love at the same time!! who else?? this is a slight cop-out because the boys are identical but Carrot and Angua, of course!!!!

if I didn't say the moment when he took the lightning strike for her...would I even be me? special mention to the bit in ember island players where zuko sits next to katara and then aang whines but zuko refuses to move >:)

this is maybe the hardest couple to categorize yet???? they're so freaking dramatic that it seems underwhelming to call them wholesome but they're not exactly fucked up either?? I'm calling them wholesome but know that I am dissatisfied with my own system

I am going to be extremely annoying and say "All I Need" by Within Temptation because "can you still see the heart of me" has those good good "you were going to heal my scars in the caves and then I betrayed you and I'm just trying to get back to that place where you thought you could maybe trust me" vibes.

I need to hear more about this Zutara ml love square au. It’s everything I didn’t know I needed in my life.

(sidenote: please check out the design @becasart made of painted lady!katara bc it’s gorgeous)

so i outlined my vision of the love square a bit already here, but there’s so many places it could GO, and i personally am a slut for the square shifting (see: my desire to see marinette slowly falling for chat while adrien is falling for marinette and suddenly the script is flipped), and it’s beautiful because you have four different relationship arcs, right??? zutara and paintedblue are both one-sided, with lots of pining, but vastly different dynamics. you get the angst and antagonism of katara hating zuko while he’s desperate to prove himself to her--but has no idea how, because keeping up his facade as the crown prince is the only thing that might protect him from his father’s wrath (and yeah, he still has the scar--the common story is that it was a training accident; no one knows the truth, except zuko, his sister, his uncle, and ozai), which is why he accepted the deal with the blue spirit in the first place, so that he had a means of protecting his people. and then you have the painted lady in love with the blue spirit, but she knows his heart lies elsewhere and every time they’re fighting soldiers back to back, or saving people, working together--there will be moments where she just melts, where their eyes meet and she thinks maybe he feels the same, but then reality sets back in, he looks away, pulls his hand back, and she desperately fights back her own jealousy because above all else she wants him to be happy, even if it’s not her.

and then you have blutara, which is basically ladrien--he loves katara, and she loves him, but they both think it’s unrequited; zuko knows that she hates the real him, because he hasn’t realized yet that his identity as blue is the real him, in every way that matters. he can never bring himself to take advantage of the fact that she doesn’t know his real identity, no matter how much he wants to--how desperately he wants to kiss her, spin her until she laughs, until the fire in her eyes smolder to embers with a heat that is all for him. and for katara, she’s so intensely conflicted because she doesn’t believe it’s remotely possible that the person he loves is her. part if it is because she met zuko before she ever met blue in either form--so how could she be the one blue loves, when he hadn’t known her before she met him as the painted lady??? so then there’s the dramatic irony in them being in love with each other but convinced it’s unrequited.

AND THEN, WE COME TO THE HEART OF IT ALL--the painted lady and zuko, neither of them in love with the other (or so they think) but in a way this allows them to be even more real with each other. their truest selves, because there’s nothing for them to hide. no feelings--because of course there couldn’t be feelings, she hates him, it doesn’t matter how much her insides clenched unpleasantly when she thought he’d been hurt, he’s still the spirits-damned prince of the nation that had destroyed her people and overrun the world--and the painted lady just can’t compare to the fire that burns at katara’s center, no matter how often zuko thinks he sees flickers of it in the lady’s eyes, beneath that inscrutable mask of hers.

but that’s just at the start. because then things start to change.

the painted lady saves zuko’s life. again and again. somehow, he always manages to get himself in dangerous situations, and sometimes, she almost thinks there’s more to him than she gave him credit for. and the painted lady is always there when things go bad--when people need her, she’s the first to dive into danger to help them--when he can’t get away in time to transform, she’s there, pulling his ass out of the metaphorical (or sometimes literal) fire. and they get closer. they get trapped together, and they have to learn to work together to get out of whatever spirit-trap it is, they have to connect--and they start seeing the other pieces of each other’s puzzled souls. zuko’s compassion for his people peaks through his arrogant, princely facade, and katara can never keep her fire tamped down for long--and then there’s guilt, because how can they possibly be falling in love with each other when they already love other people?????

there’s like four or five different layers to this slow burn and i just. would love to sink my teeth into it dfkgjhdkfhgdfg

A hundred years ago, the avatar disappeared--and in his absence, the Air Nomads were wiped out, the Water Tribes decimated, and the Earth Kingdom conquered. Ba Sing Se became the Flame Empire's new seat of government, and Emperor Ozai now sits on the throne, sure in his power and willing to do anything to keep it.

But the people grow restless. Rumors have begun to circulate--the reappearance of spirits long thought to be little more than fanciful myths, fighting against the Imperial Guard, preventing executions, saving families from devastation, redistributing the Emperor's personal wealth. Some argue that the spirits themselves have returned to help people in need--others believe that humans have taken up the mantles themselves, stoking the embers of rebellion.

The Painted Lady and the Blue Spirit are playing a dangerous game--should their identities be discovered, they would surely be captured and executed. But they each have their own reasons for fighting, and neither is willing to back down. Which may make things difficult, when their lives become entwined in more ways than they could possibly have imagined.

Zutara thoughts: they are so bonnie and clyde like but Katara is more in the lead while zuko happily follows her. Over time Zuko trusts her input more than even the avatars.

The first thing I thought when I read “Bonnie and Clyde Zutara” was “that fits their dynamic as the Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady”. And it does!! I’ve always loved their dual identities and, especially, their potential. Like. Can you imagine?

After Zuko joins the Gaang during the Western Air Temple, he buys another Blue Spirit mask and keeps it hidden from the others. He goes out at night to fight crime (messing with Fire Nation ships, fortresses, camps, etc.) and eventually stumbles upon the Painted Lady. They meet and, at first, they don’t know they’re Zuko and Katara, but they fight alongside each other. I think in this AU, they could reveal their secret identities right before The Southern Raiders. Which, I think, would hurt Katara more and make her even more mad at him. During TSR, she tells him it’s the Painted Lady’s last mission with the Blue Spirit. And that is true. Until after the Final Agni Kai and the end of the War.

BUT THEN! Some years later, Zuko is Fire Lord (and single again) and Katara is Ambassador for the Southern Water Tribe (and single again). By day, they navigate the world of politics fair and square, but when the world of politics isn’t fair and square, they don the Blue Spirit’s and the Painted Lady’s outfits and fight crime at night, terrorizing whoever is still loyal to Ozai or unfair to the people. And, of course, along the way, they find feelings they’d buried during those days before Sozin’s Comet.

So this love square thing, is Zuko in love with Katara and Painted Lady in love with the blue spirit? Or are you feeling vice versa?

It could really go either way, but I’m definitely feeling this for my story in particular--Katara first sees the Blue Spirit when he risks his life to save a family from a burning building (a fire that had been set by whatever the villain of the week was, idk), and she falls in love with his compassion, the way he carefully sets the child in her parents arms and watches to be sure they are safe, then vanishing between one heartbeat and the next before anyone can get close to him to offer praise (or ask questions).

Zuko falls in love with Katara the first time he sees her standing up to one of his father’s generals. (Idk exactly what I’m gonna do about worldbuilding, but I’m thinking some kind of modernized version of the AtLA world? Zuko is still prince and Ozai is the Firelord, but there’s modern technology, plus bending, and their alter egos are powered up by blessings given by the Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady respectively. So sort of Miraculous-ish in spirit but with the spirits instead of Kwami and it’s not so much an organization as these spirits had compassion for humans and wanted to help them out of respect for the avatar, who was lost a century ago, the cycle seemingly broken.) She risks being locked up for political dissidence, but Zuko steps in, and the fire in her eyes sets his heart ablaze.

Katara hates him. He’s the prince, his father is Firelord, he can’t possibly understand the plight of his own people, nevermind hers.

The Blue Spirit likes the Painted Lady well enough--they work well as a team, they fight together like they were made for it, but he can never get the girl with the fire in her eyes out of his head. And he knows she hates him--who she believes he is, and who he can never tell her he isn’t--which makes those stolen moments where she sees him as the Blue Spirit and truly sees who he is at his core all the sweeter.

Katara knows the Blue Spirit loves someone else, but she can’t help the way she feels about him. When they fight together, she can almost make believe, for a few precious seconds, that she has as much of a place in his heart as he has in hers.

Painted Lady/Zuko becomes almost a reverse!Marichat, culminating in such moments as Katara’s conscience refusing to allow her to just let him get hurt or worse--saving him, and almost unmasking in front of him, before she remembers the Blue Spirit, the one she truly loves.

Zutara Miraculous Ladybug AU Love Square. Since The Blue Spirit and Katara when to prom together in the Chibi Shorts, I made them the Ladrien of this AU.

So is anyone going to write that Zuko-Blue Spirit/Katara-Painted Lady love square AU inspired by Miraculous Ladybug or am I going to have to do it myself?
