Hispanic Representation Rises after 2022 California Midterm Elections

An attorney who has litigated cases for clients in the public and private sectors, Matthew “Matt” Zumstein joined Zurich Staff Legal in 2019. To provide relevant legal advice and guidance for his clients, Matthew Zumstein stays informed on the political climate across Sacramento, California, and beyond. After the 2022 midterm election, the California legislature made progress toward equitable representation of the Latino and Hispanic population.

Before the election, among the 80 state assembly members and 40 state senators, the California state legislature had 32 Latino and Hispanic members, a little more than a quarter of the 120 members. In comparison, in the 2020 census, about 40 percent of California’s population identified as either Latino or Hispanic. With the election of seven additional members, representation of this group rose to about 32.5 percent.

In total, voters elected six new assembly members and three senators. All except three - Juan Alanis, Kate Sanchez, and Josh Hoover - registered as members of the California Latino Legislative Caucus.

Page 7. ---- Died in Hospital Following Motor Accident ---- Thought to Have Been a Resident of Hamilton ---- Simcoe, Ont., Aug. 29. - (CP) - Coroner Dr. E. W. Zumstein, of Delhi, to-day had ordered an inquest into the death of the unidentified woman, thought to be a resident of Hamilton, who died in hospital here Sunday night from injuries suffered in a motor accident. Provincial police were trying to identify her.

The woman was offered a ride by Chester Beaumert and Kados Sigmond, both of Welland, when they noticed her walking beside the highway. Authorities have taken no action against the men who deny any knowledge of her identity. Sigmond suffered slight injuries when the car overturned near Vanessa, but Beaumert, driver of the car, escaped uninjured. The inquest will be held here Friday.

Not Known Here The detective department of the Hamilton police force stated this morning that they had tried in vain to trace any relatives or friends of the woman who was thought to have come from Hamilton. Constable Metcalfe, of the provincial police, declined to make any statement when asked if he had had any success in tracing the woman and her domicile.

Elle a également été l’occasion de remercier et de promouvoir trois sous-officiers à un grade supérieur et six chefs de section. Samedi 10 juin dernier, une matinée de formation complémentaire liée au matériel spécifique de notre région a mis un terme à la formation de base suivie au centre de formation de l’Etablissement cantonal d’assurance et de prévention (ECAP) et à l’interne du service de défense incendie et de secours du Val- de-Travers (SDIS). En 2023, un nombre important de recrues incorporées en début d’année ont suivi ces cours, il s’agit de : Laureline Anderegg, Maxime Aubert, Yannick Balisson, Alice Boileau, Antonio Gavinhos Marques, Maria Inês Da Silva Pereira, Lucas Ellenberger, Amélie Huguelet, Séverine Jacot-Descombes, David Koller, Anaïs Reboux, Léa Robert-Tissot, Raphaël Schaffo, Launora Sejdiu, Vanessa Vaudel et Piotr Zimoch. Deux nouveaux sapeurs-pompiers déjà formés, Lydia Tajes et Bastien Vaucher, ont également été incorporés samedi dernier. Trois personnes doivent encore accomplir la formation ECAP en 2024 pour être pleinement opérationnelles : Ylan Daniel, Jonalphy Lopez Pereira et Kerian Lüthi. Les 21 nouveaux sapeurs-pompiers ont été informés de la gestion des alarmes et de leur comportement en intervention. Cette cérémonie a également été l’occasion de féliciter et de remercier les appointé·es Meri Besson, Gilles Besson et Arnaud Zumstein qui ont suivi avec succès le cours de chef de groupe et qui ont été nommé·es au grade de caporal. A la suite d’un processus de sélection, plusieurs personnes ont également été nommées à la fonction de chefs de section à savoir : le premier-lieutenant Kevin Brocard, le premier-lieutenant Pascal Isler et le lieu- tenant Laurent Gossauer au sein du détachement de premiers secours 2 (DPS 2), le caporal Damien Walther et le premier-lieutenant Cédric Matthey au sein du DPS 3 de La Côte-aux-Fées et des Verrières et le premier-lieutenant Jean-Marc Vaucher au sein du DPS 3 de Travers. Le Conseil communal et l’Etat-major du SDIS tiennent à chaleureusement féliciter toutes ces personnes pour leur engagement citoyen et leur grand dévouement au service de la collectivité publique vallonnière.

California Wildfire and Impact on Home Insurance Rates

William Scott informed The Star today. "It is a matter for the municipal authorities," said Sergt. Scott. "Delhi has its own chief of police employed by the town."

DELHI, Ont., August 3.- Tension was at a high pitch in the tobacco fields of this area today as a result of the unruly demonstration by a mob of some 50 men outside the home of Joseph Repchak, tobacco grower, last night. An official investigation is likely.

SUFFER HEAD WOUNDS TWO of Repchak's employes suffered head wounds and other cuts when showered with missiles by the demonstrators who were said to be protesting the alleged influx of alien workers. The injured men were members of a party of four occupying the verandah of Repchak's home when the mob marched past. Eggs and stones were hurled at the dwelling. it was said.

Repchak, aroused by the disturbance, hastily dressed and took his injured workers to the office of Dr. E. W. Zumstein for medical attention. A crowd estimated at 100 followed them and congregated outside the building but did not attempt to molest the injured men after their wounds had been tended.

4 ON VERANDAH Four employes of Repchak, himself a naturalized Canadian. were sitting on the verandah when the mob made its appearance. Caught in the first volley, two of the men were hit with stones and suffered deep scalp wounds which required medical attention. The other men ran into the house, where Mr. Repchak was hastily dressing. having been aroused from his sleep as the stones kept bouncing off the wallsof his home.

Undaunted the tobacco grower, accompanied by the injured men, started out for the office of the doctor in the village, followed by the howling mob, and by the time the doctor's office was reached there were more than 100 in the mob. They kept milling around in front of the physician's office and for a time fear was expressed that they might again attack the men when they emerged.

William Bennett, said to have been one of those active in the demonstration, was also a casualty, suffering a cut on his head, which required six stitches to close. He, too, was treated by Dr. Zumstein and when the mob learned he had been injured tempers flared again. Bennett said he had been hit with a stone thrown by one of the Repchak employes.

NO POLICE Complete absence of any police officers in the village added to the general confusion as a number of the more peaceful citizens tried to find the local night constable. He could not be found, having disappeared before the mob set out on its march to the Repchak home, it is claimed. Trouble has been brewing for sometime, it is claimed, as the more radical English residents, protested the bringing of foreign-born into the district.

However, according to reports Mr. Repchak is considered a worthy citizen and only two months ago was granted his Canadian citizenship papers. His two children attend the Delhi public school and are popular with their school chums.

Frank Kasza and Coloman Milo were the two Hungarians injured.
