Yesterday I had a random urge to draw Fire Nation Zukaang from my AU The Avatar and the Fire Prince (so Aang is 15yo and Zuko is 16yo here). I also kinda just wanted an excuse to draw Aang with hair :) he kinda looks like Mako now that I think about it lmao... Meanwhile Zuko's giving me major Xie Lian (from Heaven Official's Blessing) vibes for some reason? Maybe it's his long flowing hair...

This isn't from any particular upcoming scene in my fic or anything (though maybe I will write it in when I get to that point, who knows). I imagine the context is they're undercover in the FN and some asshole is trying to punch Zuko - of course Aang is NOT having it. Maybe the puncher is Hide (the bully) from The Headband episode? idk lol

I do also have a version of this where Aang is classic bald Aang, so let me know if y'all wanna see that and I'll add it in the reblogs or somethin :)

Because it was a free day and I was a fan of genderbend, I decided to make the same drawing with different variants.

I'm still a little incredulous that there is this type of material and the Zukaang fandom only discovered it a short time ago.

need you to know i haven't stopped thinking about your air nomad zuko au for zukaang week since i first saw it and if you have any more ideas about it i would be so curious to hear them! though the art is so evocative it really speaks for itself, there's a whole story that's formed in my brain just from that

Oh, thank you, thank you! I am so happy that fans are interested in this little idea.

It is sort of a post-canon AU. The idea of Firelord Zuko always seemed a little strange to me, since he never really learned how to rule a country, so... yes, Zuko does look great in his father's robes, and that is what he wanted in the beginning of his journey, but I'm not sure he is ready for this role.

And then I watched this video.

Such a material! I loved the idea of Zuko and Aang rebuilding Air Nomad culture together. That's fair, first of all. This is what Zuko is good at – he searched for the Avatar in every corner of the world, he visited every one of the four temples, he should know a lot about Air Nomads. It would be so beautiful to watch him and Aang travelling on Appa together, sharing knowledge, teaching acolytes etc. Their world – and this fandom – needs more Air Nomads.

I'm by no means an expert in any culture, so my ideas are completely made up. I did not want to offence or disrespect anyone, I swear.

As a bonus, I can shave Zuko's head! Back to his bald look from the Book 1! I've always loved it.

There is almost no plot here for now. Just slice of life, mostly. I was planning to draw a few pictures and comic pages about their journey and share my thoughts. But there will be something like a plot twist, which I want to keep a surprise.

like the homie krankittoeleven, i pretty much only use angst as a plot device - there are only happy/hopeful endings in this household lmao - but if i consider context, the fic with the angstiest ending is probably Honorfall (zutara, rated E). maybe Of All the Things My Hands Have Held (zutaraang, rated M)..?

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

lots of my fics have happy endings ;))))) as for the happiest... ahh, probably If It Means a Lot to You (zukaang, rated M) and Flowers Never Pick Themselves (zutaraang, rated M).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

er, yes and no? i feel like hate is a strong word. it's more so that there are some readers who have simply ~disliked~ certain premises of mine, which, y'know, is what it is! click away or write your own shit! ♥

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

the good kind, baby, and absolutely nothing less. if it doesn't make me wet, i don't post it!

10. Do you write crossovers?

i used to! especially with and amongst irl friends. if there was a fandom i/we were into, there was a harry potter crossover in our shared docs to go with it LOL.

an entire fic? no, not to my knowledge anyway. but i've definitely had some scenes and dialogue grabbed and scattered across the web over the years.

Take Care (zutara, rated M), and several other zutara fics that i have put into a graveyard so that even though they're unlikely to be completed, they can still be appreciated!

mmm. this is a bit hard for me to answer because i feel like i could use improvement everywhere, always. i could probably use some more work in my dialogue though (just having more of it, i think). with conflict resolution as well - circling back to angst, i usually gloss over it because i want [my] characters to have nothing but good times and good endings. i need to be less wary of putting them through some shit, which i am working on!

anywayyy. my biggest strength is my prose!

up for debate, but personally my weakness is outlines. i try to use them but my brain does not like having "rules" when it comes to creating a story, even if i am the one to write them ;;

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

i'm a native (american) english speaker, so this question feels.. odd? bc ~american~? but as a native english speaker, i absolutely don't mind at all. i love languages and i love letting them into my brain! i myself use words from different languages, especially in what i'm writing is based in another country/place of origin.

why the atla fandom is a nightmare to navigate pick your poison

zutara shippers: we were robbed/ aang is an abuser/ bryke is sexist/kataang is a sexist mans fantasy/ mai is an abuser/ aang is a rapist/kataang is a pedophile ship????? momtara is great when she's a kid but not as an adult as an adult being a mom kills her agencyy we are the real katara fans

kataang: zutara is an abusive ship/ zuko is responsible for his familys genocide/sure they became friends but if they got together it would end up in tears / steals art to mock artists/ (seriously that ws such in poor taste im kathaanger but there are lines and that line is not taking art/mocking it)

Would you mind explaining why you ship Azaang? It seems interesting, but I can't put my finger on it. Since you dominate the tag, maybe you have some insights about the ship?

Short answer: It's a superior, more intimate, more suggestive, and more spiritually attuned version of Zukaang and a complete antithesis to Kataang. It mostly takes place in my Book 4: Air/Dark Avatar Ozai AU.

Long answer: I believe it all started when I read Aaron Ehasz's tweet about Azula having her own redemption arc with Zuko as her Iroh basically. I then read a fanfic called Azula's Redemption where she's redeemed through Aang by showing her how to open and master her own chakras. It ends with Azulaang being endgame.

It's commonly believed that Azulaang is another "opposites attract" thing but mostly with their personalities rather than elements, even though Aang can waterbend and that art was one of the easiest for him to learn. Azula also had a rather strong fixation on the earth kingdom and was able to bend the Dai Li to her will with ease.

It is often shipped along with Zutara because it gives Aang a love interest. Some fans also see the possibility of Azula reforming due to Aang. I've been studying both characters and their dynamics with other people. I came to the conclusion that Azulaang has as much narrative significance as Zutara.

Azula getting better is the ultimate goal in Azulaang but I wanted to complicate things a bit where Aang is mostly changed by Azula's influence as well.

I invented a little mechanic where Aang and Azula form a spirit bond. This bond unites them as fate, allowing them to understand each other better than anyone else and one will know when the other is lying. This bond is formed when Aang finishes opening his own chakras first and it gets even stronger once Azula completes her chakra session next. Why it didn't form in Ba Sing Se is likely because Aang's fire and light chakras weren't fully opened. Do you know how Katara was an earthly tether blocking Aang's last chakra? I picture Azula being something of an opposite entity where her presence keeps all chakras open.

I mostly place Azulaang within the Dark Avatar Ozai AU of mine. In case you're wondering about that, it's an AU where ATLA has a Book 4: Air but the story arcs from the back half of season 2 of Legends of Korra are put in Aang's saga instead. Some parts of the first 3 seasons are altered though, like when Aang meets Roku for the first time, he vaguely describes Vaatu but doesn't mention his name. In the Library, the gaang learn the names Raava and Vaatu but no more than that, at the beginning of season 3, Avatar Wan's two-part episodes debut while Aang is still in a coma, at the end of season 3, Ozai fights the lion turtle instead of Aang at a different location and his plans for the earth kingdom were a trick to keep the gaang distracted. Ozai wins by slaying the beast and consuming its soul.

The dark avatar doesn't just obtain all bending arts in the opposite direction of Aang's cycle but consumes/controls the very sources of the bending arts, the entire power system of the avatarverse, and the souls of all original benders after causing them to go extinct.

Again, I always imagine Azulaang taking place in that timeline because the reason why their spirit bond forms in the first place is because Ozai doesn't need to fuse with Vaatu, Ozai IS Vaatu. Vaatu is also the true orchestrator of the 100-year war through Sozin and is reborn as a human through Iroh's mother, Ilah. Another reason is that Azula will have every reason in the world to want to join Team Avatar, bond or no bond.

Aang is the one who loses his past lives but in return, after he's purified, Vaatu's natural abilities, instincts, and status are taken from him and combined with all of Raava's while still permanently fused with Aang.

There have been times when Azulaang was seen through a biblical lens with Aang as an angelic archetype and Azula as a demonic archetype.

I hope this makes sense and I didn't just ramble on.

Dear Zukaang shipper,

Maybe don't put Zutara or any other ship down to make yours float, it doesn’t work, invites endless malice and just isn't worth it.

Besides idk if you've ever seen Zutara meta, but they've spent the better part of 15 years dissecting every bit lore there is and they'll use it to dissect your ship too. Don't do it, trust me.

Not everyone is going to like your ship and crappy things will be said, kind of like what you did with Zutara. Unfortunately 'Well they did it why shouldn't I too?' just takes you in an endless spiral of bitterness that will kill any joy your ship brings you.

It's better to have fun and ship and let ship.
