top 5 very minor sequels characters?
*claps my hands together giddily* my time to shine, thanks Casey! Honestly it's going to be the hardest to narrow down solely to just five. I'm only going to be including characters from the films (otherwise this would be a very different list) and I'm running on the basis that they don't have a huge role in affecting the plot and primarily function as background characters (so no Paige or Zorii or Kaydel on this list, but know that I adore them)
Snap Wexley. Although technically my love for Snap is definitely born a little bit out of the Poe comics, I still adore the moments we get of him in the movies, rare as they are. That quick little shot at the end of tfa where we see him and Poe looking excitedly at each other in the bg when the map is complete? I adore them both so much. Shout out to Poe's canon bestie, and also bigger shout out to Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga for going "he's fine nothing happened on Exegol what the fuck are you talking about"
Tallie Lintra. MY LOVE. MY ABSOLUTE BELOVED I'M SO SORRY THAT EMO ASS BLEW UP THE HANGAR YOU WERE IN...anyway, I just love the vibe that Tallie gives off in her few scenes we see of her. Plus an A-Wing pilot?? FUCK YEAH. I'm always gonna adore A-Wing pilots (I have a soft spot for A-Wings, my dad gave me a toy A-Wing as a kid)
C'ai Threnalli. I just love C'ai. Running theme here in that all my faves are pilots (is anyone shocked? I mean, really?). He seems like an absolute sweetie. I love the canon details we got of him outside the movie as well - that he's one of Poe's frequent wingman and understands Poe pretty well/they're close because of it, and that C'ai doesn't speak Basic. Also the hug between him and Poe at the end of tlj is SO SOFT and sWEET I love it sm. I also just realized a couple weeks ago that you can actually hear Poe say his name, so I finally know how to pronounce it (it's said like Kai)
Beaumont Kin. Beaumont you funky little autism, you. I love the fact that his scenes in tros is just him infodumping about his special interest. This man was a professor before he joined the Resistance? He's estranged from his shitty family, has a special interest in the old republic (and altho now it's not on wookieepedia i swear at one point it was canon he had visited like - some sith planets to take a look at the historical sites).
Captain Canady. The one and only First Order fella to make the list. Why is he on here? Because for reasons unknown even to me, I love him? He's so exasperated in the like....five minutes of screentime he has in tlj, and looks like he's 0.5 seconds away from materializing off that dreadnought onto the Finalizer to throttle Hux, which is...valid as hell, and funny as fuck to watch.
Honorable Mentions (some of whom felt a little too plot relevant to include): Larma D'Acy, Wrobie Tyce (another pilot, also D'Acy's wife!), Jessika Pava, KALONIA my beloved I'm sorry you couldn't fit into the list, Peazy (PZ-4CO), Ushos S. Statura, Aftab Ackbar, Taslin Brance, and whole lot more because I want to fit the entire Resistance into my pocket to keep them safe. I love them deeply.
Ask me my top five anything!

“Okay who the hell does this? I get invited to a wedding and get paired with the biggest asshole of the egotistical man variety, I’m going to murder that man if he even breathes in my direction” Raven said throwing the wedding invitation onto the table. She arched her brow at the look on Charity’s face and it looked like she was enjoying Raven’s moment of panic. “What?”

With a warm hand clasped tightly around your own, you twist and turn through an unknown city, trying to stay ahead of your pursuers; the sound of footsteps thundering along the narrow side streets behind you . Every blaster bolt, every splintering of the air around you serves as a constant reminder that they’re gaining ground—their shots are becoming more accurate with every attempt they make. Luckily, another opening appears at the right moment and you follow Poe’s lead, allowing him to drag you down it.
There’s barely seconds between you, their shouts following you and bouncing between the walls to remind you that they’re almost on you. And as if right on cue, Poe momentarily stops running to take aim and fire back, sending the stormtrooper at the front crashing down to the ground and causing the others to stumble over him. It buys you enough time to turn and run again, the ceremonial sounds of the parade passing through the city growing louder with each step you take.
You break for freedom into an explosion of colours; waves of people moving and blending together in an ocean of celebrations. The sounds are deafening and easily drown out the pounding of your heart in your ears; a continuous, upbeat tune leading a procession of brightly coloured floats, each one with their own acts entertaining the crowds while passing by. It has you both faltering in your tracks for a moment, chests heaving in time with each other while your eyes dart around, trying to find the best route through.
Dancers twirl by, their outfits glistening and sparkling in the midday sun and earning gasps of awe from the crowd. Children’s faces light up in pure adoration—each one of them watching in delight while dreams begin to manifest in their innocent minds of one day being able to do this when they’re old enough.
Poe’s other hand begins to move, subtly hiding his blaster from view now that you’re both surrounded by so many innocent by-standers.
“There they are!” There’s jostling behind you in the crowd as you snap your head to see white armour pouring out between brightly coloured outfits; the gleam of plastoid swirling through, much like milk bleeding through a cup of caf. There are more shouts while shoulders barge people out of the way as they attempt to clear a path towards you and Poe.
“Poe…” You squeeze his hand in urgency, trying to keep some composure given the situation but there’s already a tingling in your body, begging you to run. Fight or flight. This isn’t the place to fight and there’s so many of them—with just you and Poe, you’re severely outnumbered.
“I see them,” he nods, eyes glancing back over his shoulder before scanning the area. “Come on.”
And then you’re running again, apologising to people as you knock them off-balance while weaving your way through the crowd. Angry shouts and screams in many different tongues follow in your wake, blending with the roaring of the crowd and drawing little attention to the way you continue to run.
That is, until Poe darts straight out into the smallest gap between the floats, having timed it just right to dash across to the other side of the street and into the opposite crowd. This time, it’s a quick duck to the left and a change in direction, burying yourselves deeply between the people and standing still for a moment while attempting to catch your breath.
“Jacket.” Poe huffs out, just as short of breath as you are while he lets go of your hand and holsters his blaster. “Give me your jacket.” You ask no questions and do as he says, unfastening it while his eyes scan the area quickly before meeting yours again. Even here, in this hopeless situation, there’s still an energy that radiates from him as though he secretly enjoys the chase and being kept on his toes—and with a hint of a grin, he turns around to speak to a woman close by. He’s using his best charm, flashing the smiles and using that voice until he hands your jacket over in exchange for her scarf.
Poe wastes little time as he steps forward towards you, his body now so much closer amongst a sea of colour. But despite all the sounds and commotion around you, despite the steady sway and swell of the crowd, the only thing you’re able to focus on is him. The damp hair that clings to his temples has now started to curl with the heat and the sweat; the midday sun bearing down relentlessly. He gently places the scarf over your hair and then wraps it around, making sure you’re somewhat hidden at first glance. And while he tucks some loose strands out of the way, you feel his fingers linger for maybe a second or two longer than they should before they’re gone. Their absence leaves a gentle tingle against your skin, as though your body hasn’t yet processed that they’re no longer there.
Just as you had, Poe discards his jacket in an attempt to change his appearance enough to leave the immediate area without being recognised. The pace is much slower now, but his hand stays wrapped firmly around yours. You tell yourself it’s because he doesn’t want to lose you in this crowd, you tell yourself it’s because while he has a hold of you, he can focus on other things without wondering if you’re still following behind him. But every now and again, you’re met with a small brush of his thumb over your skin; as though Poe momentarily forgets himself and who he’s holding hands with.
It takes time, time that you don’t have while the First Order combs the city looking for you both—but this is the way. This is the way that you escape, slow and steady, drawing very little attention to yourselves while blending in with the celebrations. In a different life, to be lost in such festivities would have your eyes lighting up like the children around you; it would fill you with the joy and excitement evident on the faces that you pass by. But this is not your life. And it’s not Poe’s, either.
Eventually, you make it out of the crowd and to your disappointment, Poe releases your hand. The warmth against your palm quickly begins to cool until all evidence of the man’s touch disappears. For a moment, you look down, as though expecting to see some sign that it was there only a few seconds ago—but all you’re met with are the lines of the palm and the scars along the back of your hand.
“What is it?” You lift your eyes upon hearing Poe’s voice, noticing the way he’s studying you with a hint of concern. With the way you’ve been examining your hand, you understand it may look as though there’s some problem with it so you quickly shake your head.
“Nothing. It’s nothing.” You reassure him and watch the way his dark eyes flicker between your own. Without thinking, you lick your drying lips and catch the quick drop of his eyes as they study the way your lips glisten and then part while you try to stay more focused than Poe is right now. “We have to keep moving.” You remind him. Your words draw his attention back up to your eyes and he nods, a little more firmly than he needs to, as though reminding himself of that, too.
This time, you walk alongside Poe with neither one of you leading the way while your feet fall into a rhythm together. You’re just as alert as he is; eyes constantly being drawn to anything that closely resembles the armor of stormtroopers. You don’t need to talk and even if you wanted to, you’re sure the music from the parade would drown out any words you speak to the man. There will be time for conversation and the usual light-hearted banter when you both make it back to the ship in one piece.
But the ship feels a million miles away when a formation of stormtroopers appear at the other end of the street, walking towards you at a militant pace with their weapons ready. It’s clear that they haven’t spotted you yet, but Poe is already stopping abruptly and taking hold of your arm to turn back the other way. Only now you see more of them, patrolling from the opposite direction as though they’re planning on meeting in the middle.
“Fuck.” His curse is low, but you hear it. You have nowhere to hide without drawing attention to yourselves again.
Without thinking, you turn to face Poe and step closer to him. “C’mere.” There’s no hiding the curiosity that flashes over his face as you back him up a few steps into the nearest doorway but it quickly becomes a look of surprise at the abruptness of your actions. You don’t see any other expression as you reach up a hand to the back of his neck and pull him down to press your lips to his.
Poe shows absolutely no resistance to this plan; in fact, you think he almost welcomes it a little too willingly as one of his hands moves to frame your face while the other rests against your lower back to draw you in closer to him. Of all the ways you’ve ever thought about kissing Poe, not once was this on your list. A kiss to escape an enemy, yet somehow, it feels so much more than that.
Without any warning at all, Poe’s lips part against your own while his tongue slides along the seam of your lips; seeking an entrance that you’re more than happy to grant. If you’d had any sort of plan when starting this, allowing the kiss to deepen in this way hadn’t been part of it. Had it? Maker, you’re not sure. His tongue expertly slips into your mouth with a warmth and wetness that has you sighing softly down your nose. But then he tilts his head ever so slightly, somehow deepening the kiss even more while exploring every inch of your mouth that you will allow.
He’s becoming familiar with it, tracing your tongue with his own and storing you to memory while his hand slides down from your cheek and instead slips beneath the scarf around your head. It distracts you in its journey; his touch already blazes a path across the small amount of skin that it meets until eventually, his hand cups the back of your neck. The warmth of his palm, that was previously clasped around your own, now radiates across a different area of your skin—but it’s the brush of his thumb that gets you. It traces along your hairline right at your nape and earns an unexpected moan to muffle between your mouths.
Maker, you’re mortified. That wasn’t supposed to happen. You quickly pull back; lips still glistening and throbbing from the intensity and deepness of the kiss you were momentarily lost in.
“I - I’m… Shit, Poe. I…” You’re trying to apologize—you don’t want this to be misinterpreted as something that it’s not. But your words falter as your eyes meet his again and he very slowly raises a single eyebrow at your failed attempt at an apology. You’re all too aware of a heat that sits far too low in your stomach and the way that your arousal makes itself very apparent now that he’s staring at you like that.
No. That wasn’t your intention… Was it?
Poe moves towards you without saying anything. Two small steps. That’s all it takes before your back is touching the opposite wall and his body is boxing you in. This time, the increase in your heart rate has nothing to do with the stormtroopers that have already passed by, unaware of you and Poe in the doorway.
“You’re what?” He asks as he lifts his hand and your stomach flips with the thrill and anticipation of those fingers being on your skin again. However, he presses it to the wall beside you while he holds himself close enough to keep you tightly wound, but far enough away to keep you yearning.
“I’m sorry.” You barely whisper as your eyes drop to his lips again. This isn’t the mission you’re on. This isn’t what you’re here for. But you can’t help yourself. Those full lips are right there, parted and framed by a few days worth of stubble. Now that you’re this close, you notice more of the greys that pepper it and a small, isolated patch right beneath his lower lip. Nobody can deny the fact that Poe Dameron is handsome but you never expected to be one to fall for him just as all the others had.
“You are?” Poe asks and leans in a little closer to you. “Because I’m not.” Oh, fuck.
You can’t say for sure who moves first, but in less than a second, your lips are crashing to his again. There’s no hesitation this time; he has mapped your mouth out and navigates it as expertly as he would a star chart. Poe’s tongue slips right back in there, picking up where he left off while his hands work the scarf down to free your hair. It’s clear he wants to feel it as one hand buries into it, allowing the strands to fill the space between his fingers while you reach to mirror his action.
This time, it’s Poe that is caught out when your teeth latch onto his lower lip just as your fingers tighten against his hair. But unlike you, he’s unashamed. He makes no apology for the sound that he makes while his lip slides free and he’s able to seal his mouth to yours again. It’s tongues and teeth, it’s slow and deep, broken only by a momentary surfacing for air before continuing. And then it’s Poe’s mouth, moving to kiss at the corner of yours before trailing his lips down to your jaw. Stars, this isn’t what you were expecting and with your head dropping back against the wall, you have no will to tell him to stop.
“Do you think they’re gone?” Each word he speaks causes his lips to graze over the skin that you allow him access to with your head tipped back.
“No.” You lie. It earns you a smirk that you feel curl against your skin, because he knows, just as much as you do, that the troopers passed by within seconds of the first kiss. “I think they’re still out there.” Poe hums against your skin in response to that, giving himself a moment or two to act as though he’s coming up with a plan. He’s not. Escaping couldn’t be further from his mind right now as his hands move to rest against your hips and draw them a little tighter to his own.
“Suppose we’ll have to keep cover here, then.” He suggests before nipping at the skin on your jaw. This time, it’s you who smirks as you keep your eyes closed, enjoying this moment far too much.
“That’s the best plan I’ve heard all day.”

kitty pls talk to me about your thots on poe's kinks
This sent me into orbit! I am about to air this man OUT!
NSFW UNDER THE CUT 18+ ONLY
Mask Kink/Helmet Kink. We've seen Zorii Bliss, you know good and damn when they've fucked and he's insisted the helmet stays on. Zorii suspected that it was because he could see his reflection, but it was more the thrill of fucking someone "unknown".
The man is double belted into his pants because he can't keep it in his pants. So yes, public/semi-public. Being on a Resistance base doesn't lend to a lot of privacy, so he takes what he can get, whether it's bending you over in a dark corner of the hangar or pulling you into a supply closet.
Phone/comms sex is his thing, too. Commander away on long missions he's going to get lonely and why should he be lonely when he can just give you a quick call from the cockpit of his X-wing? It's been so bad that you had to stash wipes in his cockpit for clean up.
Praise kink meet the hero of the Resistance, he lives and breathes praise. The husky whisper of Good Boy in his ear is enough to put that hidden corner of the hangar to use while he teases the words from you again and again until you cum.
You've seen his hair. You think he keeps it that length because he is unkept or lazy? Have you seen his X-wing and his Droid? The man keeps it that length because he likes it pulled. Just a quick tug no matter when is an instant on switch for him. More than once have you given those beautiful brown locks a tug to get out of an early morning meeting.
Poe sweet sweet Poe is a switch, meaning dom at times sub at others. After a bad day, Poe just wants to be held and taken care of. He lets you decide for him, whether that's gagging him while you fuck him or stroking his hair while you cuddle him.

[ felix mallard, cis man, he/him. ] ✧・゚ is that [ rhys bliss ] who just stumbled into town? rumour has it that they’re the [ twenty-four ] year old child of [ zorii bliss ] from [ star wars ]. i’ve also heard that they’re [ intuitive ] but [ stubborn ] and have [ zero ] siblings. i could almost swear i heard [ delilah - fred again ] playing when they appeared.
Tumblr media
rhys was born to successful spice runner, zorii bliss, father unknown and unimportant. zorii never felt it was important for her to reveal who his father was, but she was adamant in telling rhys that it wasn’t poe dameron as rhys was conceived during the time in which poe was zorii’s enemy and avoided the planet kijimi.
rhys learned quickly how to survive the harsh planet, watched after by zorii’s fellow smugglers and taught the trade. often, the young boy was used as a decoy or as the object itself that held the spice.
he never complained about his role in the business nor did he mind. in fact, he aspired to be just as good, if not better, than his mother. he wanted to make her proud. she was a hard individual to impress, so to do so would be a great accomplishment for him.
unfortunately, any possible connections he could have made on kijimi were cut short. in a flurry of sudden activity, zorii pushed him onto a ship with a few of her most trusted men and sent him off without explanation. he was young and out of the loop of the politics of the galaxy, but seeing and hearing the news that kijimi had been destroyed told him all that he needed to know.
he hadn’t been told if his mother had made it off world in time, devastated and inconsolable by the crew. he was beyond angry that she hadn’t told him about any of it, striking the match to the fire that would quickly burn inside of rhys.
he was still too young to captain the crew, but her certainly took on the role regardless. and, they mostly listened. he had the same commanding traits as his mother, and knew what sort of decisions she would make in certain situations. he wasn’t perfect, but he was determined to become the spice runner he’d always wanted to be.
after the fall of the first order, zorii had sought out her son to announce her survival and role. however, he didn’t make it easy to find him and it took nearly a year for her to locate him. their meeting was bittersweet. rhys was relieved that his mother was alive, yet felt betrayed that she didn’t explain any of this to him sooner. as she told him to rejoin her, he refused. he was going to make his own mark without her help. he gave his crew the option to go back to his mother, of which most did.
but, some stayed and rhys was fine with that. he was just a teenager as he set out to aggressively compete against his mother’s operation. he still loved her, but he just couldn’t stay with her anymore.
as time went on, rhys went for riskier and riskier hauls. he’d gotten himself into enough trouble than anyone would think about retiring. but, he just couldn’t. there was something addictive about seeing how far he could really go, how much he could make and move. the only thing that could stop him was death itself.
rhys holds a small grudge against the resistance for bringing his mother into their war. though, he can’t be too mad at them because they did give her the information that kijimi was going to be destroyed. his biggest problem is with poe dameron.
he has always been slightly force sensitive. he gets ‘feelings’ that something is about to happen and acts on them. however, he has never thought it had anything to do with the force nor does he believe the force is even real. jedi and sith were just fairytales for children. probably will never learn how to use the force like other force-users.
takes part in pod racing every once and a while to earn some extra cash. goes under the alias of ‘zor blae’.
bisexual, slightly addicted to spice, mama’s boy, and a flirtatious mess. however, he’s never had an actual relationship because it’s hard for him to trust someone that much.

poe dameron: a masterpost
Tumblr media
Ever since The Force Awakens released in 2015, I’ve kind of made it my mission to keep track of any and all expanded material that included my favorite flyboy (and resistance general!) Poe Dameron. I kind of lost track in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, but over the holidays, I caught back up.
I’ve been asked a couple of times about his appearances in the comics/novels, so I decided to make a quick, mostly chronological masterpost of his various appearances since they tend to be sporadic at best. I’ve included the episodes he appears in/is mentioned in Resistance, as well as some material that focuses on his parents, Kes and Shara because once you fall in love with Poe, you fall in love with his parents there’s no way around it.
Rebellion Era (Shara & Kes)
Empire Ascendant: Kes and Shara help build Echo Base, Poe appears (as a baby) briefly in a hologram
Star Wars (2020 Run): Takes place in between Empire and Return of the Jedi, mostly focuses on Luke, Leia and Lando but Kes and Shara have had big roles as well (includes tons of ‘fun’ parallels between Poe and his parents)
Shattered Empire: Takes place directly after Return of the Jedi. The first canonical appearance of Shara and Kes.
Before/During The Force Awakens
Poe Dameron Freefall: Young Adult novel that explores Poe’s history with Zorii. Takes place over a year and a half, set when Poe’s sixteen.
Age of Resistance - Poe: takes place while Poe is in the New Republic Navy, we get to see some of Rapier Squadron
SW Adventures (2017) #24: takes place while Poe is in the New Republic Navy
Before The Awakening: explores the recent histories of Finn, Rey and Poe leading up to the Force Awakens: explains how Poe joins the Resistance
Star Wars Poe Dameron: 31 issue comic series (+ 2 annuals) that nicely expands on his history in the Resistance and sets up threads that are picked up on in TLJ and TROS (issues #26-31 are set Post TLJ, but also explore arcs that run simultaneously through TFA)
SW Adventures (2017) #15
SW Adventures (2017) #6: Rose and Poe meet for the first time!
Star Wars Special C-3P0: Poe appears briefly to rescue Threepio
Star Wars Age of Resistance Special: there’s a short story about BB-8 that features Poe pretty heavily
Resistance 1.01 “The Recruit”: Poe brings Kaz into the Resistance
Resistance 1.07 “Signal From Sector Six”: Poe reunites with Kaz to investigate a distress signal
SW Adventures #16: Poe appears briefly to contact Kaz
SW Adventures #17: cameo appearance from Poe (in a daydream)
Resistance 1.11 “Station Theta Black”: Poe and Kaz team up to investigate what the First Order is up to in the unknown regions.
Resistance 1.17 “The Core Problem”: Poe and Kaz go to investigate another location in the unknown regions to see what the First Order is up to: ties in directly to The Force Awakens, as Poe is leaving for Jakku at the end of the episode.
Moving Target: mentioned in, at the very end of the novel
Poe Dameron Flight Log: junior tie-in novel, set from Poe’s POV. His various flight logs up to and during The Force Awakens. The parts referenced after he crashes the TIE are no longer canonical, but there’s still plenty of fun snippets to take away from it (and less fun, we get a glimpse at what he underwent torture wise before Kylo)
The Force Awakens Novelization: again, the parts post TIE Crash are no longer canonical, but it includes a lot of great moments not featured in the film
Post The Last Jedi/The Rise Of Skywalker
The Last Jedi Novelization: goes further in-depth what Poe is up to while Rose and Finn are on Canto Bight
Resistance 2.02 “A Quick Salvage Run”: mentioned only, takes place shortly after the D’Qar evacuation (we get good Poe & Kaz feels)
Resistance Reborn: picks up immediately where Poe Dameron #31 leaves off.
Resistance 2.17 “Rebuilding the Resistance”: mentioned only again, but it’s more good Poe & Kaz content
Spark of the Resistance: Poe, Rey and Rose go on a supply mission
Star Wars: Allegiance - four-issue miniseries leading up to TROS; mostly focuses on Rey, Leia and Rose but there’s some good Poe and Finn content.
“Choose Your Destiny” A Finn & Poe Adventure
SW Adventures #31: Poe and Rey go on a training run together
SW Adventures #32: primarily focuses on Finn, but there’s a couple of good (heartwrenching) Poe panels
SW Adventures (2020) #1-2: Poe and Finn decide to enlist Artoo to help them devise a new training course for Rey because they miss having her on missions with them
The Rise of Skywalker Novelization
Misc
Poe To The Rescue (Lego Special): takes place shortly after the C-3P0 comic special
Galaxy of Adventures “Rise of the Resistance”
Galaxy of Adventures “An Unlikely Friendship”
Galaxy of Adventures “A Hero Rolls Out”
Galaxy of Adventures “Leia Organa”
Galaxy of Adventures “Rey and Friends VS. The First Order”
Lego Star Wars Holiday Special: aka the one where Poe wears a holiday BB-8 sweater and is an adorable disaster (Disney+ Special)
Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales: Halloween special focused on Poe and BB-8 as they crash land on Mustafar (Disney+)
Rebel Files: tie in novel compiling texts from the Rebellion with the odd annotations by Resistance senior command.

how I would fix star wars
inevitably, I have been thinking about How I Would Fix Star Wars, and make the parts of TRoS that displeased me into a more coherent story.
unfortunately, to do so will require the use of a time machine and veto power over the Lucasfilm Story Group. but IF I had those things here is what I would do:
I actually would not make a lot of changes to TFA. The main ones would be:
toning down Starkiller a bit as a threat, to a one-shot-per-planet deal but with a faster recharge time
slightly more stormtrooper stuff -- establish what Finn’s leaving behind and give Phasma a little depth.
if possible, put some kind of distinguishing visual marker on the trooper who marked Finn’s helmet.
a small background detail that isn't important yet: after the village massacre at the beginning, show stormtroopers collecting the bodies, trooper and villager alike. if possible, do this after every scene with a significant body count, throughout all three movies.
either give the knights of ren some actual stuff to do or cut them out entirely
show kyle chafing at snoke’s leash, maybe demanding to know more about some of snoke’s various Secret Projects, and being dismissed
give rey a little time to settle in with the Resistance before leaving to find Luke. we don't have to show it much, just make it clear that she’s making a home there and has bonded strongly with Leia
clean up some weird pacing and make the travel times/distances between planets more consistent
honestly other than that I wouldn't change much. I genuinely like TFA a lot and its strength is in how well it establishes the new characters.
for TLJ, some bigger changes but the bones of it I'd leave alone:
make it more clear why the tracking through hyperspace is a big deal and make the solution less of a fetch quest
I really like parts of the Canto Bight plot but I would probably swap it out for something with more stormtroopers in it -- let Finn interact with other troopers and remind us that there are individuals under those helmets
(a recurring joke: Finn can always tell troopers apart when they’re in uniform, and Rose can never figure out how. he thinks it’s because he was a trooper, but no, it's because he’s Force sensitive)
maybe get close to convincing some of them to desert, but either they fail last-minute or the deserters get caught and killed
Finn and Rose escape by the skin of their teeth thanks to a trooper who helps them, letting them know that even if they aren't brave enough to leave, there are plenty of troopers who aren't all-in with the First Order
again, after any major fight show the body cleanup. troopers carrying and stacking the dead in neat rows. start hinting that there is something more ominous here than fanatical tidiness
the Snoke stuff -- make it more obvious that Snoke is orchestrating stuff other than just running the First Order. maybe have Hux ask about the cargo ships they're sending to the Unknown Regions, and get shot down
make part of Kyle’s refusal to leave w Rey due to his burning need to Know All The Secrets, and conviction that as Supreme Leader he could really clean up the joint
once Snoke is dead, show Kyle getting access to his secret files/vaults; do NOT show what he finds there
I'd also want to clean up some wonky pacing and timeline/travel distance stuff, probably, but again I really like most of the movie so it’s nothing major
also keep Phasma around for the next movie! what the fuck, she rules, why would you not
okay so that brings us to TRoS, which… would need a pretty major overhaul.
First of all, we are working under the assumption that I have a time machine, so I made Carrie Fisher go to the cardiologist on the reg starting on day 1 of TFA rehearsals, and she’s fine and able to play the part as she was meant to.
with that in place, here’s how I would restructure:
we keep the Hammer Horror opening scene, but tweak the Emperor’s reveal. he’s much more corpse-y, without the tech umbilical keeping him alive -- a wraith animated by Dark power.
lots of grandiose claims about his unstoppable army and his impending dominion over the galaxy, ultimate triumph over the Light, etc
don't show the armada yet -- just kyle’s reaction, which is genuine fear.
news of the Emperor’s return isn't a broadcast, but a whisper. a transmission from a terrified First Order cargo pilot, who’s learned the truth about his one-way trip to the Unknown Regions. passed through the lower ranks by rumor and hearsay. eventually leaked to the Resistance by an unknown First Order source
I like the idea from the beginning of the movie, that Rey’s trying to speak to dead Jedi through the Force. but it’s not working, and she shares her frustration with Leia
make it clear that she and Leia have a deep, strong bond.
give Rey a Jedi artifact to hunt for. maybe there’s a place or a thing that she thinks will let her commune with fallen Jedi, and that’s what they go looking for.
that lets us keep some of the fetch quest, but the First Order’s not as actively on their tail.
they keep crossing paths anyway, and every time there are troopers doing something worse. maybe at one point they see troopers refuse to massacre civilians, and being killed themselves instead.
also they take Rose with them, because this movie needs more Rose
still have those post-battle scenes of body cleanup. now the cleanup crews are being killed once they’re done
this could be a good use for the Knights of Ren, actually. whatever is happening, they're part of it
Leia is more active throughout: she's on the move, recruiting allies for the Resistance, trying to figure out what's happening in the Unknown Regions
she has an actual scene with Lando, and he goes to Rey on her orders
tweak Poe’s backstory with Zorii. he worked with her while undercover for the Resistance, and left them in the lurch when the General needed him back.
he’d have recruited her, if there had been time, but now he's glad he didn't: most everyone Poe recruited to the Resistance died at Crait.
when Rey crosses paths with Kyle, he’s obviously rattled. he Knows Something that he won't or can't tell her and he's even more fatalistic than usual.
lean harder on the unease/whispers of dissent in the First Order as they're told to do more and more awful things. maybe a scene where someone -- not Hux -- disagrees openly, and Kyle says something that implies that he's getting orders from someone above his head.
this gives Hux a chance to snark at Kyle -- isn't he supposed to be the Supreme Leader, now? who's telling him what to do?
off Kyle’s reaction -- someone is telling him what to do, and he's terrified of them in a way he never was of Snoke.
(keep Hux-as-informant, that was done perfectly)
Rey’s artifact hunt still takes her to the Death Star wreckage, off rumors that Palpatine hoarded Jedi artifacts.
we meet Janna &co. Finn is so relieved and happy to meet other troopers who survived defecting. Janna tells him that there used to be more, that it used to be easier to get out, but more and more troopers have been killed in the attempt, without escaping.
by now it’s clear: there is Something Wrong With The First Order, beyond the obvious.
Rey fights Kyle in the Death Star ruins. Kyle tells her the Emperor wants to turn her to the Dark Side, that he can’t be refused or stopped, that even death won’t let her escape from him.
the fight plays out similarly, but Leia’s distraction doesn't kill her.
after Rey heals him, Kyle faces his fear and talks to Leia via Force bond. He tells her what the Emperor is planning, and it’s Ben Solo who leaves the ruins.
he can give Leia files or some other concrete proof via the same trick he uses with Rey in the movie, because that’s honestly very cool and it was used really well, so we’re keeping that
when Rey talks to Luke on Ach-To, he tells her that Palpatine used the Empire to sow chaos and fear, because that made the Dark Side stronger and gave him more power to tap into.
Luke says: “I think he would have been happy to burn the whole galaxy down, as long as he could rule over the ashes.”
Rey realizes she can’t hide from the Emperor, and knows he’ll never turn her to the Dark. she goes after him.
Leia sends the Resistance to back Rey up and sets out to rally the galaxy with Lando and Chewie
finally, it’s confrontation time! Rey faces Zombie Palpatine, and he reveals his plan in all its glory:
he’s built an army of the dead. ghost ships, crewed by all those bodies we've been watching the First Order collect for three movies.
some of them we recognize, if we’re paying attention: the trooper who marked Finn’s helmet, Lor San Tekka, Hux. there are long-dead clone troopers, little more than skeletons in filthy white armor. half-functional Separatist droids. Resistance fighters and First Order officers killed on Crait. countless civilians.
they’re all dead, all animated by Palaptine’s Dark Side powers, fueled by the strife and chaos he continues to sow throughout the galaxy
he doesn’t want to blow up any more planets. he wants to kill the shit out of absolutely everyone: the end of all life, and all Light. everyone in the galaxy a soldier in his undead army
he wants Rey to strike him down and become the new Sith Empress, ruling over an empire of ashes.
but we are discarding the granddaughter shit, because frankly it is not necessary and makes no sense.
he can just be like ‘ah yes, a feral desert child, powerful in the Force, with no inconvenient ties to hold her back. I've had good luck with those, mostly.’
now, a brief side trip: what is the First Order doing, in the midst of all this?
well, the rank and file are actually not super down with the ‘join the glorious army of the dead’ plan. half of them are in open revolt; some try to run, some seize control of their ships and decide to fight for the living
Phasma leads Team Living. yeah, I kept her for a reason! Gwendoline Christie is great at this!
Ben shows up as before, fights the Knights, does the cool lightsaber trick with Rey. he fights with Leia’s saber.
when Palpatine drains their life force to restore himself, though, something happens differently:
it’s actually Leia’s life force. she gives up her life for her son and for the daughter of her heart, willingly and gladly, knowing she has rallied the galaxy to their aid. she tells them, before she goes, that help is on the way
the giant fleet that arrives to fight Palpatine has First Order ships in it. finally, everyone is on the same side. Palpatine has been playing both sides against each other since Episode 1, but it won't work anymore, now that they know what he wants. the long con is over. they're united against him.
Rey beats Palpatine the same way, Ben revives her the same way, but Leia’s sacrifice means he has enough juice left to survive it.
idk about the kiss; I am Reylo-agnostic
but he’s going to try to shepherd the First Order into something that builds and protects, instead of destroying.
people like Janna and Finn, who got out, and Rose, who lived under their heel, will show him how.
Finn is Force sensitive, and so are some of the other former troopers.
some of them want to become Jedi
Finn wants to follow Leia’s path: do the training so he understands how to use the Force, but he's not meant to be a Jedi. he's going to be a leader -- not a general, hopefully, but a leader for peacetime.
so like. they won! hooray.
Rey takes the name Skywalker, still. Ben is fine with this: he’s a Solo-Organa.
there can be a touching Force ghost reconciliation, or not, whatever
so. that is how to fix star wars. you’re welcome. if anyone out there has a time machine and an in with Lucasfilm, hit me up I guess?

Wasn’t there something someone could do to cleanse themselvesof a virus very quickly? Connor searched for a moment, LED spinning.

Long Time No See Pt. 2
Part 1, Part 2
Pairings: Poe Dameron x Reader
Warnings: Grief
Summary: You thought you would never see Poe again until he shows up on Kijimi years after he left.
Notes: This is a much shorter part but I felt like it was necessary because of how things went in tros.
Masterlist ~ Prompt/Request
Tumblr media
“Poe! I’m going to miss you so much.” You attacked him with a bear hug just as he was about to get on the ship. “It was so good to see you again. Promise me that you’ll come back to visit, for real this time.”
“Yeah, you too y/n. I promise, as soon as all of this is over we’ll tour the galaxy. I love you so much Ladybug.” And with that, he turned back and got onto the ship. You waved at him as the doors closed and then followed Zorii back through the streets. You really hoped that you would see him again, your big brother, your hero. Seeing him had brought out the little seven year old kid in you waiting for him to come back just to say hi. You didn’t hate him, you never did. But some part of you knew that you might never see him again.
~
“Kimiji... how?” Poe felt like someone had taken all the air out of his lungs and then kicked him in the stomach. He had just returned back to the base on Ajan Kloss and found out the Leia was dead and now he had been told that Kimiji was gone. That meant that you were gone and so was Zorii.
“A blast from a star destroyer. A ship from the new Sith fleet out of the unknowns.” Commander D’Acy told him.
“Do you- do you mind if I take a minute?” Poe asked to no one in particular. D’Acy nodded silently and he stepped away into the trees not too far away. Once he was a respectable distance away he crumpled against the trunk of a tree with tears running down his cheeks silently.
You and Zorii were both dead. He had only just seen you for the first time in twelve years. He hadn’t even gotten the chance to spend enough time with you. The full force of the situation was finally hitting him; not only losing you, but losing Zorii, realizing that the Emperor now had a full fleet of planet destroying ships, realizing that they were fighting a losing battle, Leia being dead, everything. Poe just couldn’t take it anymore.
He put his head in his hands and just took deep breaths to calm himself when he head footsteps coming up from behind him. The newcomer crouched in front of him and put a hand on his shoulder comfortingly.
“Hey...” Finn started in a soft voice. Poe looked up with red rimmed eyes. “It’s going to be alright.”
“They’re gone Finn. Y/n, Zorii, Leia. They’re all gone” He sniffled. Finn stood up with him and pulled him into a hug.
“It’s okay, at least they’re in a better place now away from all of this. They all lived good lives.”
“Y/n was too young! She was only nineteen! I didn’t even get to spend time with her...”
“Listen to me Poe,” Finn held him at arms length and forced him to look up from the ground. “I didn’t get to know y/n or Zorii very well, but I know for sure that they wouldn’t want you moping about. They would want you to get up and fight back. So would Leia.” At his words, Poe seemed to collect himself and wiped away his tears.
“You’re right Finn. Thank you.”
~
The comms were alive with frantic shouts and clamor. There were tie fighters everywhere and ships were being shot down left, right, and center.
“General! What’s our next move?” Someone asked but Poe couldn’t answer.
“Poe, what now?!” Another pilot asked frantically. All he could do was look across the carnage in the sky in despair. Just like on Creit, no one had come to help them.
“My friends...” his voice wavered as he addressed the entire Resistance fleet, “I’m sorry, I thought we had a shot. But there’s just too many of them.” The guilt, regret, and failure that he felt in that moment was overwhelming. It was enough to kill. Poe hated himself for bringing the Resistance to Exegol only for every single one of them to be slaughtered. He had brought them on a suicide mission that was doomed for failure.
No one on the comms spoke. You could almost hear the grief and intense sadness that everyone felt. But then a different voice spoke up.
“But there are more of us Poe.” That one simple sentence was enough to breath life and hope back into the pilot. “There are more of us.” It was Lando. Stars, Poe would kiss him if he could. He pulled his ship up above the fleet of star destroyers and was greeted by the most beautiful and amazing sight he had ever seen. Ships of all shapes and sizes, for all means and purposes hovered in the air awaiting his command and more kept coming. Poe didn’t think he had ever seen so many ships in the air all together before.
“Look at this,” he breathed in total awe, tears of joy almost spilling over onto his cheeks. “Look at this! Hit those underbelly cannons! Every one we knock out is a world saved!” He commanded. The ships all flew forward into action, taking out as many cannons as possible.
Poe saw two ships fly in front of him, both shooting at a cannon blowing it up and the destroyer with it.
“So long sky trash!” A familiar voice laughed through the comms. Poe couldn’t believe his ears.
“Who’s that flyer?” He asked incredulously.
“Take a guess spice runner!” Zorii responded. You, in your own ship, whooped and laughed through the comms as you took out a tie fighter in front of Poe.
“Zorii! Y/n! You made it!” He cheered.
“You bet your ass!” You couldn’t help but smile at how happy he sounded. Despite the grave circumstances, you were just happy to be able to hear his voice again.
~
There were people everywhere of every species and race crowded on the Resistance base of Ajan Kloss. It was a celebration for the success on Exegol. Emotions were running high as people reunited with their loved ones. You landed you ship, careful not to squash anyone. After you climbed out you made your way over to where Zorii was, giving her a huge hug.
“Are you alright y/n? Are you hurt?” She asked, her big sister side coming out.
“I’m fine, I’m fine!” You pushed her hands away as she checked you for any damage. “Have you seen- Poe!” You exclaimed when you finally caught sight of him. He turned at the sound of his name and saw you barreling towards him. You threw your helmet to the side and jumped into his arms as he engulfed you in a hug.
“Ladybug! Oh Maker I’m so happy to see you! Are you alright?” He set you down making sure that you were okay just like Zorii had done moments before but you just swatted him away. “How did you learn to fly like that? That was amazing!”
“Like I said, a lot has changed. But thank you.”
“When I heard about Kimiji I thought you were dead! How did you get out?”
“Shortly after you left, Zorii and I packed out bags and made friends with some people who were able to get us out past the hyper lanes. I had a feeling that we needed to leave.”
“Y/n you have no idea how good it is to see you again.” He brought you in for another hug. You could stay like that for the rest of your life if it was possible. In the loving embrace of your role model, your older brother, your hero. No matter what happened, no matter what he had done or what he might do, you would always love him.
“So, how bout that galaxy tour you were talking about earlier?” You asked after a moment with a wide smile on your face.
“One thing at a time Ladybug, one thing at a time.” He laughed and hugged you tighter.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the Death of Romance
***** Contains spoilers, do not read if you have yet to watch the film *****
Having had a few days to think about TROS I can now coherently put into words everything that I did not appreciate about the film. This may read as if  I’m slamming the film, which is not my intention as I really enjoyed it, but there are some things which did not make sense for me, that did not add up, and my feelings for this film compared to the first two were lacking in places. In all, I did not get the sense of fulfillment and purpose you’re supposed to get at the end of a Star War’s saga, I feel quite empty and hollow and I have many questions which I feel should have been answered.
I want to start with our closing scene where Rey, Poe and Finn are clinging to one another, happy that they’ve all made it through the last battle. This scene was wonderful and amazing because we have three best friends truly happy that they’re alive and together. But I did not feel the ‘joy’ I think I was meant to feel because I kept asking myself, what have these characters got to show for it at the end of the film?
I’ll start with Finn. Oh glorious Finn! So many things were not answered about Finn. He’s broken free of the Republic and has gained freedom from his former stormtrooper life, but is this all we can say? Finn is clearly force-sensitive, displaying many moments of force awareness throughout the film. He has previously held and fought with a light saber, and in addition to this, he was able to pinpoint where the signal was coming from in the penultimate battle (TROS) and he knew the exact moment when Rey died on Exogul because he felt it (he didn’t have to say, we saw it on his heartbroken face!) So the big question is, was this what Finn wanted to tell Rey when they were sinking into the quicksands and moments from death? Did he want to tell her that he understood, because he was strong with the force too? Or was it simply (others speculate) that he wanted to tell her he loved her? Finn had a potential romance with Rose, but his feelings for her are platonic and so his romance arc is abandoned in this film. Does he have feelings for Poe instead? The pair are close and there is chemistry between them. If Finn does have feelings for Poe, then perhaps he was going to tell Rey he was force-sensitive.
The fact is we don’t know because the opportunity is lost, but it must have been heavy-going because Finn couldn’t say what he wanted to say in front of Poe (later on). This makes me think that Finn wanted to tell Rey that he loved her. While we know Rey doesn’t share these feelings for Finn, the unasked question still floats to the forefront of Finn’s storyline. He has found love among friends in the saga, but not romantic love, and we kind of get the feeling that this is what he is looking for, otherwise there wouldn’t have been this unasked question in the first place. The closing scene of Finn with his two best friends was just shrouded in unfinished story for me, and I felt that Finn (assuming this saga is well and truly at a close) should have had his moment to say those words to Rey. If it wasn’t a big deal and relevant to his story arc, then why even give it screen time? Coming through a war after untold hardships at the hands of the Republic, our guy Finn really did deserve more.
Moving onto Poe, our lovable rogue. Seeing him at the end of the film is such a relief, but when I asked myself the question, what was Poe’s story arc for, I couldn’t actually give anyone an answer! He’s always been a drifter, and has fallen into the resistance as easily as falling into bed. But what does he want? What is he going to do now? Is he going to go back to being a spice trader? I can hardly imagine this after seeing him standing alongside General Leia Organa for the whole trilogy.
In terms of backstory and romance, we find out a little more about Poe’s former life as a spice trader, and the film hints at a relationship between himself and a former companion, Zorii Bliss during their time on Kijimi. But despite Zorii giving Poe her master key to gain him guaranteed entry out of Kijimi, the close of the film demonstrates that all ships have sailed between them and there is no future, at least romantically, for the pair. So Poe won’t be settling down with her anytime soon and living a quieter life. So what then?
I kind of feel that after everything, there should be an assurance for our closest and much-loved characters at the close of any saga, otherwise we cannot say what their struggles were for, what they were fighting for. Yes, they are all alive and living freely, but is this enough? In a franchise like star wars which reads very much as a fairytale, ‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,’ then yes, these stories are meant to end ‘they all live happily ever after,’ and with that usually comes a guaranteed romantic future for our lead characters. Romance certainly isn’t everything within a film, and Star Wars films notoriously feature a tragic romance of some sort, but there are also moments where romance triumphs - Han Solo and Leia Organa.
It is here that I’d like to mention Rose (poor girl) who went from being a main character in The Last Jedi to a glorified extra in The Rise of Skywalker. I think Rose had about five lines of dialogue which is absolutely staggering after the heart-breaking loss of her sister, and her unrequited love for Finn. It’s another instance where romance is dropped like a hot cake, and I cannot help but feel like the writers have serious chips on their shoulders where romance is concerned. It’s also another example of how a (formerly) leading character had her story arc dropped for unknown reasons - is Rose happy? Has she found a new family? Are her and Finn still close? (she was not present in the group hug at the films close) so where is she now? What will she do? It’s frustrating that someone so instrumental in the destruction of Canto Bight and such a powerhouse in the second film is not given any thought in the saga’s sequel.
Thanks to Rose we even have a message which underscores so many actions of characters throughout the saga. She tells Finn they will win the war not by ‘fighting what we hate, but by saving what we love,’ which heralds the absolutely heart-rending final moments between our Alderan Prince, Kylo Ren, now Ben Solo and our heroine, Rey.
What can I even say about this pair which hasn’t been said already? Absolutely needless. When I hark back to the film’s close of Rey, Finn and Poe holding one another, what was the point of Rey’s storyline, of her sacrifices? Rey is paper-thin at the film’s close. How much more can one person give? Rey lost her family, then she lost Luke, then she lost Leia, and then she loses the only boy she loved and perhaps ever will love? While she is now a trained Jedi and has the answers to the mystery of her family abandoning her on Jacoo, is this enough? Rey seemingly ends the saga in the same way she began, a lone hermit, living in isolation, in the ruins of the former world, utterly alone on a godforsaken desert planet. Is this a fair trade after everything she has been through? Even with the answers about her heritage and her parents true identities  (sorry but what a shoddily shoved-in backstory) I don’t think this is enough. I felt as empty and broken as she did at the films closure.
How do I feel about Rey being a Palpatine? Nothing whatsoever. I’m waiting for a heroine who literally comes from nothing, who is literally no one, whose worthless parents really were ‘filthy junk traders who sold her for drinking money.’ I much preferred this to be the case, rather than actually - you’re a Palpatine! Why can’t a heroine be born to nothing and rise to greatness, why does power have to come hand-in-hand with an age-old name which is whispered with fear? And Palpatine? We get a crusty bin bag flailing around on a crane hook, a complete shade of this former Sith self. After the big reveal, I spent the rest of the film reeling about the thought that someone actually had sexual relations with him (very reminiscent of Voldemort and Bellatrix in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Perhaps we should have seen it coming, Disney have a penchant for bad romances (Descendants). But villains having babies in Star Wars, when it’s clear from the former films that  Palpatine has no romantic inclinations whatsoever, I didn’t appreciate the reveal for what it was.
And finally I’d like to say a few things about someone who is absent from the friend huddle at the close of the film - probably the most dynamic and interesting star wars character the sagas have graced us with - Kylo Ren / Ben Solo. What a tragic story.
The film reveals that Ben and Rey are dyad, which is as strong a connection you can have with anyone in the universe. They are two sides of the same coin, their life lines interwoven like a tapestry, almost the one and the same person, ying and yang, soulmates - all of the other terms we can think of. More to the point, the pair are equals, in terms of life experiences, strength, personality and capabilities.
Rey and Ben seemingly begin as opposites, light and dark, good and evil. As the films progress, it becomes clear that this is not the case. Ben has the capacity for love, tenderness, peace and rationality, just as much as Rey has the capacity for hatred, violence, war and irrationality. When we watch the pair react across multiple scenes, many of Rey’s reactions are not kin with being a Jedi. When she finds out about Palpatine killing her parents, her immediate instinct is to find him and kill him. Is this a Jedi reaction? No. It is human. The same emotions which led Annakin Skywalker to butcher a whole tribe of sand people for the kidnapping and killing of his mother Shmi.
At other points in the film, Rey demonstrates recklessness, taking a skimmer out into uncertain waters against the advice of others, putting her life at risk. She is impatient, impulsive and driven by revenge in the same way Kylo Ren is demonised for. And let us not forget the fight scene in the ruins of the former Deathstar, when her and Kylo Ren grapple with one another and try to best eachother’s force ability with their sabers. When I rewatch this scene, it is very clear that Kylo is not striking to kill. His movements are actually very defensive, he’s letting Rey take her fury out on him and he isn’t on the offensive at all. There are several moments he could have easily killed Rey, and it isn’t until the final moment when Rey is on the ground that he moves to make a kill, and Leia’s intervention stops him. What is absolutely staggering is when Kylo is disarmed by his mother’s intervention, Rey doesn’t stop. She takes up Kylo’s saber and stabs him with it, literally striking him down in hatred, which is not what Jedi are meant to do. Think of all the instances where Vader and Palaptine (previous films) goad Jedi into ‘striking them down,’ so they can ‘feel their hate.’ Rey’s actions allude to her failing of being a true Jedi and actually taking life. Yes, Rey does heal Kylo Ren, or Ben as he has now become. But does this action atone for her attempting to destroy him in the first place? We can argues this both ways, but I think we could only argue that it does atone for her actions, if at the films closure, Ben’s healing of Rey was enough to atone for his.
Ben comes back from absolute damnation. He rejects Kylo Ren, throws his saber into the sea and makes peace with his father Han Solo. He then storms into Palpatine’s palace with nothing but a blaster (very reminiscent of his father) and comes to the aid of Rey. Incredible fight scene aside, when Ben heals Rey in the same way she healed him, this should have atoned for all of Ben’s previous sins, in the same way that Rey’s healing of Kylo did for her. But this does not happen, instead we have to face the heart-crushing truth that Ben dies giving Rey his life force, and while a Jedi, his happy ending with the girl he loves is withheld from him, from Rey and from us.
This is where the film failed for me, and the over-arching message of redemption and forgiveness just fizzled into nothing. The simple fact is that Ben and Rey did not get the same treatment. Slowly, over the course of the film, Rey strays from the ‘light’ and becomes a shade of grey. Ben mirrors this, straying from the ‘dark’ towards the light and becoming his own shade of grey. And yet only one of them walks away from the penultimate war.
I have described the reasons I find this unfair from Rey’s side - her character traits, her previous actions, so I will now approach this from Ben’s side. Ben has had an equally, unhappy childhood, as lonely and estranged as Rey had. He was sent into Jedi training at a young age, leading to feelings of not being loved by his parents Ben and Leia. It is clear from previous films that Han was ‘not around’ for son and off doing what Han does best. Leia was still a general, and it’s safe to say that while she loved her son, he did not, or would not ever had had her attentions. So Ben is sent away to his Uncle to train as a Jedi, already feeling worthless in his parents eyes, and unloved. He expects to be treated as a nephew by his Uncle Luke, who does not warm to him at all. Luke treats Ben Solo with the same distance as a teacher does any student, and so Ben does not find familial love here either. He is then betrayed by Luke, which all comes to the surface in The Last Jedi.
Luke feared Ben Solo’s power, and seeing his potential, decides to kill him (I love how Leia never finds out about this) if she had I’m pretty sure she’d have more to say to her brother. Luke then blames Ben Solo for the destruction of the Jedi temple and turns all of his other students against Ben. Luke never really gets punished for these acts (I never forgave him, not even for his attempts in the film to placate Kylo). During all of this, Snoke becomes a personal influence on Ben Solo, playing on Ben’s loneliness, feelings of worthlessness, and slowly turning Ben towards the dark. And can you blame Ben for saying yes, and wanting a friend? I can’t blame him at all.
Kylo’s attempts to be his Grandfather are born from wanting to identify with someone in his family, to have a feeling of belonging. And like Annakin Skywalker, Kylo Ren is plagued by doubt. When he kills Han Solo, he never really walks away from his father. He is consumed by guilt and self-loathing which twists him even further, and pushes him down the path to the dark-side when in actual fact he doesn’t want to go there - he feels he has no choice. His parents rejected him, and he feels all he can do is more to make them reject him further. And yet when he has the chance, he does not kill his mother, Leia. He finds himself reaching out to Rey, drawn to her loneliness and isolation, and wanting to be there for her. Despite all of his deeds, his ability to have restraint, to be understanding, to be gentle, never fade away. Like Rey, as the films progress, he becomes his own shade of grey.
For this reason, I cannot accept the closure of The Rise of Skywalker. All three films have pointed to the connection between Rey and Ben, of their absolute compatibility, of their being one another’s match in every way possible. They were supposed to bring balance to the force, and if they were truly equal, how can they bring balance to the force if one of them dies?! It make’s no sense. Especially as I’ve pointed out when Rey heals Ben, it somehow washes her clean, and yet when Ben heals Rey, it costs him is life!
Yes, before Ben dies they share a wonderful kiss, and each of them find the ‘belonging’ which has been promised to them at earlier instances in the saga. But is knowing you have found your one true love enough at the end? Thinking of Han and Leia’s sacrifices, of their deaths, along with the tragic history of the skywalker family, I cannot accept that Ben’s death was deserved. His parents wanted him to ‘come home,’ and have a life, they absolutely wanted the best for him. Ben was an extraordinary character, with an incredible story arc, and as someone who has experienced such tragedy, to come through it and redeem themselves, it is very uncharacteristic and anti-star wars for them to not have their happy ending.
So when the film closes on Rey, Finn and Poe, with Ben absent and Rose no where to be seen, I did not have closure, I did not have fulfillment and I did not feel like I had reached the end of a Star Wars chapter. I honestly feel like I’ve ripped the film to shreds and that was not my intention. I’m a huge star wars fan and thoroughly enjoyed the film, but the decisions the writers have made - for me - are very jarring with the true message inherent within the star wars franchise.
I cannot put my finger on the message the writers were trying to get across with this final film. It clearly isn’t ‘love conquers all,’ or ‘the faithful will be rewarded,’ or anything close. There are unanswered questions, abandoned story arcs, and the shot of Rey staring at the sunsets on Tattoine only served to say that being a Jedi is awful, everyone you care about dies, your life will be hard and lonely - but hey - you get a funky gold light saber!
