Lingthusiasm Episode 77: How kids learn language in Singapore - Interview with Woon Fei Ting

Singapore is a small city-state nation with four official languages: English, Mandarin, Tamil, and Malay. Most Singaporeans can also speak a local hybrid variety known as Singlish, which arose from this highly multilingual environment to create something unique to the island. An important part of growing up in Singapore is learning which of your language skills to use in which situation.

In this episode, your host Gretchen McCulloch gets enthusiastic about how kids learn language in Singapore with Woon Fei Ting, who’s a Research Associate and the Lab Manager at the Brain, Language & Intersensory Perception Lab at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. We talk about how the rich multilingual environment in Singapore led Fei Ting and the lab to do language documentation while trying to figure out how kids learn to talk in Singapore, creating a dictionary of Red Dot Baby Talk (named after how Singapore looks like a red dot on the world map). We also talk about Singlish more generally, some words that Gretchen has learned on her trip, doing research with kids and parents via Zoom, and the role of a lab manager and other lab members in doing linguistic research.

"Just relax. Let me take care of you." (Pogue to Jayn ❤️)

One minute, some asshole on an electric scooter made her the victim of a hit-and-run, slamming into her before they mumbled an apology and zoomed off. Of course, Jayn was shocked and angry during that minute, not to mention teary-eyed because she'd hit the ground hard. Her butt and her hands weren't going to be happy when she went to her 90-minute Comp Lit lecture. At least her messenger bag had been zipped up when she fell, so she didn't lose or break anything. Except maybe her poor MP3 player, which she'd dropped when she fell, earbuds and all.

And then, he found her.

She was sniffling, trying to hurry and get to her feet, because she was so embarrassed, and shit, did my thing break? Sophomore year was stressful enough already; Jayn had had "an explosive incident" (literally) a couple months ago, thanks to the sudden inheritance of magical powers that her family had never once told her about (apparently they thought it died out after it skipped a generation). On top of that, one of her professors was RUDE, and she hadn't really found anyone to hang out with other than her dorm-mates and two classmates. Jayn was thinking about all of this and scrambling on the concrete when someone's sneakers stared her in the face. Someone had stopped in front of her, squatted, actually.

"H-huh?" She looked up and saw one of the hottest guys she'd ever had the pleasure of meeting. The sunlight played with his hair, making the brown glow, and his beautiful, concerned eyes were some mix of green, brown, and amber. He was toned and pretty, somewhere between an Abercrombie model and a Disney Prince.

"Are you OK?" he asked. His voice was lower than she'd expected, but it was pleasant, too.

"Yeah, I'm OK," He took her hands without asking, turning them over to show her scraped, angry pink palms. He did a cute thing where he bit his lip, trying to figure something out.

"D'you have a class right now?"

"No, I was going to lunch..." she whispered. Jayn blushed a bit, realizing that lo and behold, a cute person was holding her hands, and gently pulled away from him. She sort of got to her feet, enough to grab her MP3 player and stuff it in her bag. Then she slung her messenger bag over her shoulder and stood. When the guy stood up, he towered over her by almost a full foot. He also smelled like French fries, which was oddly comforting, and there was only a small space between him and her.

"You wanna go with me?" he asked, flirty smile on his face. The closest she'd ever gotten to a real romance was hugging someone who casually discarded her months later. But why would he even like her that way? After all, her private interactions with attractive people were fairly rare.

"Uh...no, it's cool. Bye." She hurried off, deciding to let nature take its course. He could go find his cheerleader girlfriend or clever actor boyfriend, while she went to get a cold drink. Something cool would feel nice against her hands.

About a week later, she got an email from a professor she'd had the semester before for a Philosophy class. They were asking if she would tutor a student who was taking a Classics class for money. Jayn had free time and no reason to turn down free cash, so she said yes. So that Saturday, she went to Stubler Library, a couple minutes before 11 AM.

[Jayn]: Hi, I'm here! Standing in front of the statue, outside.

[Pogue]: So you're the cute girl who turned me down? 😋

Confused, Jayn looked around. The library doors opened and IT WAS HIM--the Abercrombie-blessed Disney Prince!

Oh. She'd texted Pogue Parry a few times over the past few days, just to understand what exactly he was studying, what he was having problems with, and where they could easily meet. She never once imagined that he was the one person who'd stopped to see if she was OK when she got hit.

"...hi. I'm Jayn," she managed, blushing again. He chuckled, hands in his pockets.

"Hey. I'm Pogue."

Their tutoring session was only supposed to be an hour long. That was all she was getting paid for--one session each Saturday. But he always asked about some myth that sent her into a rant, or they got off track completely and muffled their laughter so the librarian wouldn't scowl in their direction. Eventually, they stopped meeting at the library, because Pogue finished his class. He decided to pay her back by asking her out (again, but that time she said yes), and down the line he started tutoring her in magic.

Pogue had made the choice to escape his suffocating, horrible parents by going west, instead of staying in Ipswich and enduring. But he still met Jayn, and they still fell in love.

My Redragon Hylas (H260) Gaming Headset Review (w/ my Paper Dolls) - Part 1 [Jan 18th, 2023]

Hello! 2023 has already arrived, and I'm starting off with this new gaming headset from Christmas of 2022 (gifted by my lil' brother). 🎄🎁 Pls watch my recorded video. ↑🎦📲

So, here's Part 1 of my Redragon Hylas (H260) gaming headset (featuring my paper dolls). 🎮🎧😊

• Here's the box itself. Nothing much to say, but some promising pictures of the inside item, as well as some information & specs about the Hylas gaming headset. 📦🙂 Are you excited to reveal the main item, you two? Then, let's not waste our time! 😁

• Inside the box are three accessories. Including, a fold user manual, an audio adapter cable, and a sheet of Redragon stickers. The latter, I don't usually use stickers. But, on the bright side, that audio adapter cable is very useful for my single audio jack devices (e.g. smartphone, MP3 player, etc.) Right, you two? Yeah. 🙂

• Finally, the main item of the show! The Redragon Hylas gaming headset! Man, it looks pretty neat in white color. However, the black could be better, although my Lil brother said "they all ran out of stock at the gaming store". Mmmm, It's alright. After all, I've already got the black color in a form of a Redragon keyboard (Rudra K565R [CLICK ME!]), so why not add a white gaming accessory to the mix, huh? 🙂

• [8th Image] My paper dolls here are trying to fit in with my new gaming headset. Unfortunately, Chowder went crumble & he hurt himself in a uncomfortable sandwich between Panini & the right earmuff. I guess, they're too tight for them... Hehe.😅

• Now, that my paper dolls are out of away, let's dive in some anatomy of my new gaming headset.

• [9th to 15th Images] The construction itself we're made in cheap plastic material, which gives this a budget line-up PC peripheral. From the microphone piece (which is short) to soft cushion earmuffs & headband (which are soft & easy to press w/ my fingers. Plus, the "Redragon" logo on top of the cushion headband), to the adjustable headbands are also made in cheap plastic instead of a piece of metal material.

• [16th Image] By far, my favorite feature is the built-in cable (measuring up to 6-foot) was made in nylon braided material for anti-bend & anti-tangle features, plus a velcro cable strap for adjusting. If only this gaming headset will be a detachable cable instead of the opposite. Then again, I'm not gonna use it for my outside purposes, so my gaming headset remains at home. 🏠🖥️🎧

• [17th & 18th Images] And let's not forget the audio cables (color green for sound & color pink for microphone) & one USB type-A. Which are gold-plated, by the way. The latter of whom for the RGB light, which I'll show to you, in Part 2. Plus, I REALLY do appreciate that they include USB & audio jack cap protectors to prevent corrosion. And when I'm done using my Redragon headset, I could plug it in w/ two aforementioned caps & then tie it up with the velcro cable strap for a clean approach. 🎧🧹😊

• Alright, let's have some comparison. I have my current wireless headset, the ZNT Soundfit. Between the size & style, they're completely differ w/ opposite ways.

BTW #2: Pls ignore the tear cushions of my current ZNT headphones. We've all been there when it comes to wearing headphones on our daily basis.

• Looks like they prefer my current ZNT headphones over my new Redragon gaming headset, considering they're snug together without a single hurt while listing some (Lo-Fi) music. Good for them! 😊🎧🎵

The most crucial tool to have in 2024 is a phone. It is a calculator, alarm clock,  flashlight, mp3 player and it connects us to things like Google, Amazon, or social media sites like Facebook or TikTok. 

Social media single-handedly changed how people utilized their phones, and it is one of the greatest advancements that came out of the technological era. But what is social media? According to  Freberg (2021), it has many definitions. Social media has the capacity to “bring communities together, break down barriers, raise awareness of world issues and create movements to spark impacts.”  These are all evident by the various world issues being seen around the world, how quickly challenges spread to various parts of the world and how campaigns such as #MeToo, #BLM and #PRIDE bought awareness to their causes. 

But is that an actual definition of social media? Yes and no. With the ever-changing advancements happening within social media, it encompasses the above definitions and so much more. The official definition as stated by Freberg (2021) is that Social Media is “a personalized, online networked hub of information, dialogue, and relationship management. These new communication technology tools allow individual users and organizations to engage with, reach, persuade, and target key audiences more effectively across multiple platforms.”  

In simpler terms, this means that social media is a group or collective of people, like minded or not, who have the capacity to create, share, connect and interact with others like minded or not. I would also define it as a platform used to communicate, relay ideas, and create. Applications like Zoom or Google meet are used to connect loved ones or businesses via electronic video conferencing.

Although I use social media every day, I characterize myself as a passive user who uses easier platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. And while I am not an overly active user, I do post things I am enthusiastic about whether it is pictures or recipes of gluten free foods. Endless scrolling is a pastime I am trying to curb so I currently limit how much time I spend online. 

My strength in understanding social media is contingent on what my children understand. I could say I try to understand concepts or review the diverse types of platforms, but it is not true. I tend to stick to Facebook for funny sayings, Instagram to find out local eateries and Pinterest on how to make those recipes. I am willing to research newer platforms, but I quickly abandon them if they  are not adult friendly. My other challenge about understanding social media is how quickly things change. The minute I master one platform an updated version is available, and it can be overwhelming to try to stay relevant in an ever-changing world. And I lack the willingness and the patience to learn newer platforms when I am content with the older ones. With my children back in school now, and I cannot call them when I can figure out how to post a picture!!  

In this class, I would love to learn how to manage and create content using social media. I am hoping to gain and improve my understanding of utilizing social media to advance my writing career, and to develop strategies on how to craft and create a successful digital footprint as an author. Understanding which platform works best, is most popular and easy to use will help my understanding of social media and allow me to use it for my benefit. My children would thank you.
