prev rb shana is def one of those people lmao.
#really enjoys video calling too. generally more tech savvy than you'd expect from a guy born in the 60s but#not a very like. online person though.#so he'll like. always prefer real life meet ups and only call if there's no possibility for the alternative at all#and calling over texting.#and only has a vague idea of the most popular sites while not knowing about the rest at all. he has his texting app something like skype or#zoom his website (not like a blog like a professional website for his work as a surgeon where you can make appointments and such)#and his email application and that's pretty much the extent of his online activity#he wants tangible/physical real life experiences and most online stuff simply doesn’t cut it for him.#so while it definitely influenced him he’d probably be still fairly similar to this if he didn’t grow up in a pre internet environment#but also#very much one of those kids these days need to get off their phones old people lmao#oc: shana#cherry is the total opposite here. way too online and hates calling and especially video calling not just because it’s shana#she hates it in general and he certainly doesn’t intend to help lmao. he likes that about her.#they have an arrangement that if they don’t see each other and she doesn’t want to talk to him over the phone she has to send him a picture#of whatever she’s doing in the moment he requests it.#she has to be in the picture#she’s not allowed to like. move locations or change her appearance and stuff like that.#shana again is a very real life experiences guy and really doesn’t care much for taking pictures and the like#but since it’s a like a snapshot of the current moment it’s different i’d say.#still he’s not the type of person to go back and look at one of those he particularly liked.#he wants the real thing he doesn’t get joy from that. if that makes sense.#but yeah it’s a nice substitute since cherry most often just fully refuses to talk to him on call. he still finds plenty of#situations to force her into it though. since a substitute may be nice but ultimately is not what he really wants.#this is also like. a situation that does not happen very often because they work in the same building and therefore see each other almost#every single day to cherry’s misery. like why am i even thinking about this.#his responses to those pictures range from mildly weird to majorly disturbing btw.#ranging from shit like ‘little angel’ to telling her that what would perfect this moment is her spitting red from her pretty lips. ew!#why am i rambling so much oh my god#help. hi 👋 if you’ve made it this far i’m sending you a virtual cookie enjoy

My Curatorial Internship at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago!
I began my Curatorial Internship on 6/7/21 bright and early as I drove my first day waking up at 5AM as I live in Wauconda, IL a northwest suburb of Chicago. MSI is in the heart of downtown Chicago, so the drive is usually an hour and half accounting for traffic. That sucked big time, so I took the train for the rest of my time so far. Luckily I only have to be in the office Monday/Tuesday which is bittersweet: my train ticket is $10 a day, parking at Barrington Station is $3.50 daily but what kicks my wallet in the teeth if my Lyft bill, usually around $50 from Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago to MSI and back. Thankfully my internship is paid thanks to Studio Institute which is my sponsor, a grant MSI received and SI how I found out about the position for the summer. I thought I would be working with a team of interns since this is a big project I am a part of, but believe it or not I am the sole Curatorial intern! It felt good to know that I did well in my interview and it wasn’t just a hunch, and to have the honor of being the sole recipient! Its been a number of years since there was a curatorial intern and with this in mind I knew I was going to work hard to pay them back for their faith in me. I do not say this lightly, as I am 28 years old now and opportunities like this I have learned are not offered to just any one off the street.
The Project? MSI is digitizing roughly 1,000 artifacts to be shown online on their website (COVID was a strong motivator for this as it hit Museums all over the world. They are passionate about reaching their audience!) Collections has over 35,000 artifacts to keep track of, and all it’s history is just written or printed in a large Accession’s Archive, and there is digital archive to work with. I am going to help with what I am assigned with gaining invaluable professional research experience, with a strong focus as well in writing for labels and anything else that is thrown my way! I am also making this blog conjunction for my school, Loyola University Chicago of which helped me get this position. This will be a long post, so buckle in as I share my weeks to bring you, and me up to date for next week, 7/19/21!
Week 1: 6/7-11/2021 | This position is 4 days a week, for a total of 28 hours. Part-time. My round-trip however with commuting turns a 7 hour work day into a 12 hour day from when I wake up until I drive home from Barrington Station. Thankfully the two days I work from home is a bit easier on commuting from upstairs to downstairs!
Monday: HR/Orientation/Introduction to Collections by Alexis, the talent manager at MSI. Your standard job introduction, but my first at a Museum.
Tuesday: In-depth Museum tour/explaining the research and writing work I would be doing/assisting Kathleen (Collections Director) in the vault*(storage, vault sounds cooler) cataloging.
Wednesday: Photographing Bike exhibit for transcription/beginning research work on first Accessions project on Firefighting artifacts by find corresponding files in Accessions archive, reading the materials in each folder to find relevant material to write in description about the item to put online. I scan the documents I find relevant, so that I can do that additional research and writing at home. This will be the plan going forward (research/cataloging the vault on Monday and Tuesdays) but there are plans to have me assist on additional projects and duties within the department and MSI as a whole.
Thursday: With the information gathered from scanning documents from each accessions folder, then at home I can look over each stapled bunch of materials of each item and then add bullet points of relevant information in a word document. That can then be shared with the Director, Curator and assistant curator to help them use the most relevant materials to weave the labels needed to put online for this historic artifacts.
Week 2: 6/14/18/2021 | Fridays are not included as that’s when I attend Zoom meetings with the program directors and liaison for Studio Institute which has over 40 interns around the country in Museums across the United States. I won’t lie... I got the best assignment in my opinion! This was tailor made for me! As an older student I am FULLY aware of what a incredible privilege it is to be paid to do something you truly love down to your bones.
Monday: I start at 9:15 but my train was late to unforeseen circumstances. I emailed my supervisor I would be in a hour later than usual and she appreciated the heads up. I continued pulling folders from the accessions archive, then scanning relevant materials. I would then staple the gathered materials and kept my work in order to mirror the worksheet log I was given for the artifacts in the fire fighting exhibit.
Tuesday: Getting in at my normal time I continued, and finished the worksheet log I was given for the Fire Fighting exhibit. I now have a large amount of material to review on my days working from home to provide bulleted points of relevant material that will assist the Collections team create the labels needed when selected materials are uploaded online. I would do five files at a time to stay organized and not bite off more than I could and get "lost in the sauce" as we would say in the Army. That way, a steady rhythm was established and I could better gauge my time per batch.
Wednesday: I worked from home continuing my task of added bulleted information points on artifacts. I am assuming that the items that have a extensive amount of reference materials will be those making the cut to be uploaded online once the project gets to that point. Made up the hour lost on Monday due to my train out of Barrington, IL running late.
Thursday: Still grinding away by going through the research materials I assembled from the archives in MSI to add bulleted points of relevant information on artifacts to make the lives of the Director, Curator, and assistant easier allowing them to focus on more advanced research and other duties.
Week 3: 6/21-25/2021
Monday: Continued transcription of the Fire Fighting Exhibit. Nearly finished with it. Working from home is getting better as I am getting a better pace of work and less distractions.
Tuesday: I was able to get some opportunities for front-facing guest interaction and educations as I gave my first MSI tour. Two individuals from my organization, the 501st Legion, came down from Green Bay for a Chicago vacation. They had seen my positive posts about being at MSI and wanted to come see it for themselves. I asked Dr. Saridakis if I could learn how to give a tour on my own, to which she agreed. In my inaugural tour I took them around the great hall's exhibits, being careful to focus on items of which I had some background in to better give a small education on the artifacts. My strength is in the Hall of Transportation in which houses the Spitfire, Stuka and new Boeing 727. On the floor I pointed out the Millburn and Tesla electric cars as well. After going at what seemed a quick pace, we made our way over to the Hall of Bicycles, and weaved back to the floor. I took them to U-505 which is my strongest exhibit. Military history is my focus, and I don't ever tire of going to see U-505. In the most surprise to my guests, they were granted a behind the scenes walk-through of Collections in which Dr. Saridakis kindly donated her time to open the vault for us. She accompanied me, but gave me the reigns to get a feel for my first guided walk-through of Collections which is a duty all in the department should be familiar, and comfortable doing. I feel I did well for my first time, and gained experience in doing the same for the following day for a larger, planned tour by mHub. I took my guests out to lunch where my supervisors did a few weeks ago. It ran over time, so I'll make up the hour later at home.
Wednesday: Today was the day of the big planned of tour by Chicago tech company, mHub. My supervisor was not available in the morning so I filled out some other documents and found other work to do until she came in. This was sorting through the former archivist's boxes of files and articles looking for relevant materials that would be of use to the registrar. I had been doing this the day before as well before my guests came in at 11AM. There was a A LOT of material, but there was plenty of relevant stuff, including a complete file on the cars, and motorcycles in the MSI collection which included a recent appraisal of each item in inventory. I found the motorcycles of interest and made copies for myself to be of use on future behind the scenes tours (you pick a handful of items scattered at various checkpoints to engage with guests about. There just isn't enough time to go row by row.) mHub was scheduled for 3:30, but didn't not come until 4ish. My recent work with the fire fighting artifacts proved critically relevant as one of the guests was working on technology for fire fighters to pull up a 3D schematic on a app to see where the beams, and wiring is without them having to hack through the walls to find it. He was very much interested in the various fire fighting artifacts and thankfully I was a part of his group throughout the tour. Exhibitions engineer Jeff brought out two 1930's Ediphones, and while he was setting up I had a lengthy chat with him regarding his duties and responsibilities at MSI which proved insightful.
Thursday:  I wasn't as productive today as I wanted to be in part to some distractions in my personal life. I will make this time up on Saturday. Continued work on transcription of relevant facts to the fire fighting exhibit
Saturday: I finally finished the fire fighting exhibit items and look forward to trying my hand at writing short labels based on returning to the material I have. This label writing experience will be invaluable in such a professional capacity. It will be nice to have this skills honed, refined and on a professional level. I trudged the remaining artifacts, and put more time off the clock to finish so I can begin on my favorite exhibit, U505 on Monday!
Week 4: 6/28-7/2/2021
Monday: I came in and had my weekly 10AM meeting with Voula, and moved onto U-505/WWII items. Same as with the fire exhibit, finding files in the accession archive, scanning relevant materials to take home for work at home.
Tuesday: I continued scanning, and gather materials. At 1:00 PM I took photos of all the labels in the U-505 exhibit for transcription by one of the volunteers, Mary. I then at 2:30 I worked with Director McCarthy cataloguing some more artifact ranks in storage. At 4:10PM I asked if I could get a photo handling a textile artifact for both the experience of doing so and seeing one of U-505's flags not only in person, but to carefully handle, and touch. Director McCarthy and Dr. Saridakis both kindly indulged my request and it was a truly awesome experience for me. I also learned that there is a later train than I usually take. That bit of info is helpful just in case I ever miss the 5 o'clock train out of Chicago back to my home train station of Barrington, IL!
Wednesday: As I did with the firefighting exhibit and items, I continued bulleting down relevant facts and information. I created a new word doc just as I done previously with the Fire Fighting artifacts.
Thursday: Continued transcription. I look forward to trying my hand at writing some labels and short descriptions. I still can barely believe I am being paid to work on items I already love learning about.
Saturday: Made up 1 hour from Thursday.
Week 5: 7/5-9/2021
Monday: Unpaid holiday for MSI employees. I am going to work half a day today so I only have to work 4 hours later in the week to make up for today. I am going to look over my U505/WWII artifacts and see if any really stand out as candidates for getting labels and descriptions.
Tuesday: I came in Tuesday and had my weekly meeting with Voula. Since the program is half-way over at this point the decision for now is for me to focus on the U-505/WWII artifacts and to also focus on writing a few labels for some of the Fire Fighting exhibit artifacts. I also took photos of all the labels in the U-505 and will transcribe that exhibit to it is available in a word doc to be transferred to the digital site - one day. I then worked with Kathleen in storage to continue cataloging artifacts, in three hours we nearly inputted over 200 artifacts.
Wednesday: I came in and got to work on transcription since there are no more additional accession files to pull and scan. MSI has just brought on a new assistant curator for a year to help with the digitization of the archives and storage. It is a daunting task! But one that will streamline Collections at MSI and make pulling artifacts extremely easy and hopefully foster some excitement from the public online to see items that otherwise sit in a dark, temperature controlled room. I also had the honor of getting to write a pitch to put up a "pop up" U-505 exhibit up in downtown. That was very exciting to me, along with the confidence gained because of the trust to do that. I wrote a few drafts to which the Director edited down. Very happy to be useful with a project that is extremely relevant to my interests.
Thursday: Continued transcription of the U-505 exhibit and writing a few labels that will then be edited by the Curator. Being directly involved in what the public will learn from a artifact is very cool to me. Improving on working remotely, efficiently - making a decision right away in the morning after a shower to begin work is a great guard against procrastination and working late to fairly submit the hours for the day. A regular schedule when self set and stuck to is extremely effective.
Saturday: Continued work on the U-505 items from home.
Week 6: 7/12-16/2021
Monday: I started working right away after waking up. I want to finish my transcription of the U-505 exhibit which includes every wall panel, all artifacts and everything else in between. I went past midnight and just hit a stride, "in the zone, so to speak."
Tuesday: I worked through the night while on a roll. I didn't look at the clock, I just kept going! Reminded me of the old all-nighters I used to pull. I was excited to be finally complete with this project. I took it upon myself to transcribe the entire exhibit since it only existed on the walls and printed material. With it digitized this will be a tremendous help to the department. I finished it and even double checked Flickr for any photos I may have missed taking myself. I only missed only small panel, but all quotes, stories, artifacts... everything came to a 50 page, 20,000 word document. I look forward to seeing Voula's reaction when I print it out tomorrow! I also made a copy of just the artifacts for MSI so when they want to put some online they'll know what is theirs outright. In my previous job I worked 10 hour shifts so this felt familiar, I enjoy doing four 10-hour days to hit 40 back then and enjoy 3-day weekends. This is less hours, but I am grateful none-the-less to have the time to use for other projects, books and hobbies.
Wednesday: Voula's reaction to the massive transcription was great. I also placed the document in SharePoint so that anyone in Collections can access it. I am sure it will be a great aid in the future when a quick reference is needed for U-505. Today was also the MSI Employee picnic which was great. I took a couple pictures and video. Sodexo made me a Angus half pound burger which was great. I sat by myself since I came after our intern/departmental MSI zoom meeting held by Talent so we could learn how MSI is a collaborative effort and chat with the heads of other departments which was cool. I followed and email Mike Welsh to set up a tour of what Construction and Grounds does around the Museum. Most folks went to the picnic at noon, and our meeting didn't conclude until 1:10PM. Thankfully though Voula stayed a little after and we chatted at the table I was at. MSI redid the Smart Home area and it's a very nice shaded, little park. Definitely never been there before as a guest. Very cool to be a part of the "in-crowd." I took a longer lunch to take it all in.
Thursday: Since I busted my butt Monday into Tuesday and enjoyed yesterday I only had to do two hours today. I sat in the other half of the MSI intern/departmental Zoom meeting which featured Collections/Exhibitions and HR. I had the best chat with Exhibitions and the public relations managers. I will send emails to follow up with both of them as I find their work fascinating, and might as well - only here for a short time and it be an absolute waste to not take utter advantage of it. I cleaned up some of my Word documents and doubled check for syntax errors.
Thats it! You, and me, are now all up to date! I will continue to make weekly postings until its conclusion! I will also add some photos in the following posts, this is a long post so stay tuned, it will be less dense.

Day 254: Giving Tuesday, or Anyday
The pot was heavy, but our driver always helped carry it down the dirty alleyway to the one room, corrugated tin structure that served as a school. Twenty or so children greeted me with cheerful smiles and awkward words in English (“Hello! How are you?” the only words they knew) as our driver set the covered pot down on the dirt floor. The children washed their hands in a bucket, using soap that our newborn organization provided for them, and I took my place on the stool, next to the pot. I was the server. I had my stack of plates next to me and every child received a large scoop of the onion, ginger, garlic, carrot, spicy rice concoction that our cook made in my kitchen earlier in the day. To me, in that shanty hut, the food looked far from appetizing - a large mound of mushy starch. So it never failed to surprise me that each child in that room wiped their plate utterly clean, scooping up the warm food and filling their bodies with nutrients. Watching them eat may have been some of the singular most satisfying moments of my four years in Bangladesh.
I love writing about food. I love cooking, and eating, even more. I think about food a lot. I watch comforting videos of professional chefs making pie, of Chinese farmers harvesting garlic. I bookmark food websites, and on weekend mornings I’ll often sit next to a stack of my beloved cookbooks, pouring over them with my big mug of coffee. Yesterday on the news there was a special report on food insecurity in America. It’s a terrible thing, and I cannot even imagine not being able to satisfy my hunger. But it’s so real. I told Billy that as terrible as the fact of food insecurity is in this country, at least there are safety nets, organizations that exist, food banks, church kitchens, public schools to help others. One of my own student’s family receives food from the county. On our parent/teacher Zoom conference call last week, I asked her, “Did you get a turkey?” She told me that she did.
FYI, there are no safety nets like this in Bangladesh. In a newsletter from the organization that my friends and I created, a line my friend wrote has stayed with me, and is kind of gnawing at me. She’d heard that families there are saying they would rather die from Covid than from hunger.
During this time of quarantine, I chose to focus on writing a food blog because food brings me joy. That’s it. Just pure joy. I love the sensations around food - the smells, feel, look, taste, and even the sounds of food. The sizzling sound of a plum crisp emerging from the oven? Yes, please. It’s also been my method of combating possible depression. Some days I wake up and feel terribly low. Having a cooking plan is often my way out of that slump. Give me an excuse to make a pie, like friends coming over for a socially-distanced backyard gathering, my spirits will find their way out of the darkness, while preparing to meld flour and butter, and find their way into the light. Works every time. And has the added benefit of making others happy. I mean, raise your hand if you don’t like pie.
That I can cook, that I can go to the grocery store and buy whatever I want - the ability to be able to do that while others go hungry - is not lost on me. I haven’t felt hunger, but I know what it looks like. I know what gratitude looks like, too, when hunger is satisfied. It looks like a very beautiful young girl with almond shaped eyes who uses her fingers to eat, and smiles up at me every few bites. It looks like a thin boy about to enter into his teenage years who likes music and likes to dance, whose father earns one dollar a day pushing a rickshaw, and who smiles hugely at me when I hand him a plate of hot food.
When we moved to Dhaka we couldn’t go outside our beautiful, air-conditioned apartment without confronting something - someone - that made us feel sad. Every single corner told its story of sorrow. We were diplomatic families - massively wealthy in comparison - but I met some others in our circle who felt like we had some choices upon being shoved up against that kind of poverty.
So we started buying bananas for one school, huge crates of them. We approached this task with humor, because pushing 250 bananas down an open-sewer street in a baby stroller? Pretty funny. Washing chicken poop off of 250 eggs in my kitchen sink? Hilarious. Even my mom, who lived with us, thought it was funny, but always lent a helping hand. She did not mind one bit washing poop off those eggs.
I kind of forgot that there was such a thing as “Giving Tuesday.” When you live overseas for so many years, certain aspects of my very own culture escape me. I also forgot that “Black Friday” was a thing. My kids had to remind me. Like, last night, around 11:00 p.m. my son said, “Don’t forget, Mom, it’s still Black Friday!” I said, rather flatley, “Noted.”
But giving is a thing, whether it’s a Tuesday or not. When I feel my heart closed to the idea of giving, I’ll remember my mother, who was the most generous person I ever knew. She still reminds me to give! That was her legacy. Every now and then I’ll  throw in a few dollars to Thrive - our organization that is still going strong, thanks to teams of Bangladeshis and Americans who continue working hard to feed families during the pandemic. I’m grateful to them, remembering those kids in that one-room school, knowing that through food, they are being given a little bit of a leg-up, a little extra, a little bit of a chance at a better life. When I am indulging in my own food delights, their smiles of gratitude are never, ever far from my thoughts.

What Marketing Strategy Is the Best for You?
Tumblr media
If you pick the right marketing strategy, you’ll be like that little guy in the middle of my diagram above. Yes! Winning! Fist pumps!
The problem with marketing today is that there are way too many options and it’s much too confusing. It makes me dizzy just thinking about this stuff and I’ve been immersed in it for 35 years.
Well, I lay down on my bed last week with a notepad and started to map out my “Unified Theory of Marketing Strategies” with an emphasis on online marketing.
And I actually came up with something that’s not totally confusing, and might even be helpful to a few people.
Here goes

It’s yet another four-quadrant grid where the vertical axis is a scale from easy to hard and the horizontal axis is a scale from passive to proactive.
I emerged with these four snappy quadrants:
Hard and Passive = Multimedia
Easy and Passive = Publishing
Hard and Proactive = Presentations
Easy and Proactive = Email
Now, all of these strategies can be effective. But, yes some are easier than others. And the passive ones tend to take a lot longer than the proactive ones.
Hard and Passive = Multimedia (Videos)
Everyone is crazy about video these days. It’s a challenging, yet passive strategy. You put a lot work into creating a video and then post it on YouTube hoping people see it.
It’s difficult to do well. It’s time-consuming and it can be expensive. And most videos are pure crap. If you want to do it well, it takes a chunk of change and a lot of time.
Throwing up a lot of little videos on your website can be a nice touch, but they usually don’t get people to call you in droves.
So, as you can see, I’m not crazy about a video strategy for self-employed professionals. I’m not saying they can’t work, but it’s a whole lot of work to do right.
Best example: A non-duality teacher named Rupert Spira. He does live workshops and films everything. Then his staff chops them up into questions and answer segments and posts them on YouTube. They’re five to fifteen minutes long. And what you see is what you get. No pitch, no hype. It’s his teaching unadulterated.
He has hundreds of videos on YouTube with hundreds of thousands of views. Does it work? Well, his workshops are always full and all he does is a low-key email announcement to his list every month or two.
I like this approach a lot. Got a lot of good content? Look good on video (unlike yours truly)? Then you may want to emulate Rupert.
Easy and Passive = Publishing
I happen to like this strategy a lot as it, ahem, built my “Empire.” It’s relatively easy: Write a how-to article on your subject matter once a week, send it out to those on your e-list and publish on your blog. Fame ensues.
But online publishing can be a lot more than that. You can take those same articles and publish them on Medium, LinkedIn, and Ezine Articles. And then you can announce them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Sometimes you can get big exposure when writing an article for a major online publication. Web traffic multiplies.
The cost is zero; an article takes from two to five hours to write (unless it takes you several days). And your ideas are online for eternity to be discovered by those looking for practical ideas. Some will opt-in to your e-list and perpetuate this virtuous marketing circle.
The downside, of course, is that, according to my extensive research, (a 10 second Google search), there are 2 million articles published online every day. The mind reels. So your stuff will be out there, but somewhat lost in a very big haystack.
I’m still a big advocate of online publishing, but the mountain is getting steeper and steeper. Just writing an article or two here and there won’t help you much.
Best Example: Well, other than mine, of course, check out Henneke of Enchanted Marketing. She has a wonderful, readable, fun blog on business writing and blogging. And she walks her talk. It’s all about well-written, relevant content. If you don’t have that as a foundation, it’s a total waste of time.
Hard and Proactive = Presentations
I built my business on presentations in front of live audiences at professional associations and chambers of commerce. It got me attention, added people to my mailing list and generated warm leads for marketing coaching.
And I still do presentations today in the form of webinars. I just filled my recent group program with the help of a couple webinars (also called video conferences). They most certainly do work.
But I put presentations in the hard category, not because they are all that hard to give, but can take a long time to prepare. The last one I did took me two full days. There were about 200 slides (whew).
Yes, that’s not the only way to do a webinar. You can just go live on Zoom Video, and that can work as well. You ultimately have to find your style and test what works.
Presentations are proactive in that at the end you can ask for the business. And, of course, you can turn the recording of the webinar into a video in a snap and send it out to those on your list. Watch it here.
So presentations will always play a big part in my marketing toolkit.
One other thing though – If you don’t have a LOT of people on your email list, good luck in getting much of an attendance. Yes, you can do guest presentations hosted by others, but you don’t have the same control and ability to pitch your professional services.
Best example: John Nemo of LinkedIn Riches. His webinar is a blast. There are a lot of them out there in the online marketing world. And many, Like John, have set them up as evergreen webinars that are scheduled to play automatically several times a day. These are kind of a hybrid between publishing and presentations.
Easy and Proactive = Email
In my opinion, email is the most powerful overall marketing tool. And it gets the least respect. But I can’t imagine even being in business without email marketing.
Social media gets all the PR and all the attention, but email gets the business. A recent study showed that email generated 40 times the business results of Facebook and Twitter combined.
Email is the online tool that’s been around the longest, and I think it’s taken for granted. Promotional emails have expanded exponentially over the years, but most of it isn’t very good.
We wade through our email boxes like we sort our mail over the trashcan. Delete, delete, delete. Why? Because it’s either not relevant or it’s boring. Usually both.
I feel that email has the greatest potential of all the online marketing strategies because it’s both relatively easy and the most proactive marketing medium of all. Your message goes right into the mailbox of your potential client. Nothing else can do that.
Marketing email holds great opportunities for improvement in several areas:
1. How to incorporate humor as the most powerful attention-getting device in existence (that almost nobody is using).
2. How to telegraph your value proposition straight to the minds and hearts of your prospect.
3. How to make your emails clear, focused, and easy-to-read.
4. How to craft a compelling call-to-action that is hard to resist.
5. How to get emails to thousands of your prospects without looking like spam.
If you’re not working on ALL of these, your emails will not get the attention and response you want.
Best Example: Therapy Practice Accelerator. Visit this site and get on the list just to see the brilliance of the email marketing. It’s all about demonstrating results.
What marketing strategies will you choose?
Take the four marketing quadrants into consideration. The easier a marketing activity, the more likely you’ll actually do it. And the more proactive a marketing activity, the faster the response you’ll get.
Cheers, Robert

Weight: 5 kg. Incl. Bag. Corresponding foot switch: Article Nr (not included). The approach that H&K have taken to the design of the amp and the compromises they have made for the lunchbox format work really well for me. I had been considering options for an upgrade to my current amp for a while. Wanted something that would work well with my overall set up and be useful for both stage and studio work.
I play ST type guitars for the most part, have used H&K amps in the past but, like others, have tended to find them on bright side and better suited to LP derivatives. That said I have always liked the format and the build quality. I read reviews and decided to give TM Deluxe 20 a go and am not disappointed. The only con I have is that it doesn't come bundled with a foot switch as this is pretty essential in any live setting. Within hours of arrival it was on the way to the rehearsal room.
Hughes And Kettner Amplifiers
I use the amp with a 2x12 cab loaded with celestial V30s. Plugged in the amp, plugged in the footswitch, set the tone controls to mid setting, adjusted the levels of the channels to give a mild crunch on the clean channel and an overdriven 'rhythm' tone on the lead channel with the same volume on each channel and ran through the entire set without changing anything. Several gigs in and I still haven't tweaked much. We play a mix of fairly hard edged R&B as a power trio and I get full and rounded tones from this little amp that sit well in the mix with more than enough balls for most of the venues we play. IMHO H&K's approach is perfect for the lunchbox format. They've concentrated on creating separate channel voicings that are fit for purpose and what they have chosen works great for me.
If you are used to using the tone controls on the amp to get the sound you want, this amp takes a different approach. As I see it the tone controls allow you to tweak the sound for the room and stage dynamics you're dealing with. If you don't like the basic channel voicings H&K have given you then this is probably not the amp for you, though I struggle to see what is not to like.
It also take the guess work out of things. I toyed with giving the amp four stars for features as it is a lunch box and lacks the versatility of it's grown up brothers, but given the sheer useability of the amp combined with power soak, red box DI and a effects loop I believe it rates 5 stars for the format.

What to look for in a PDF editor. Create, convert, and export PDFs: The most fundamental function of a PDF editor is to make PDFs, either from scratch, scanned hard copies, or by converting digital documents.
Pua Forums
A good PDF editor should be able to transform a variety of file types—from Microsoft Office formats to images to HTML—and do so seamlessly, preserving the original formatting. It should also include OCR technology to make the PDF text searchable and editable. Likewise, a good PDF editor must be able to export PDFs into other editable formats such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, HTML, or plain text, maintaining the original files hyperlinks, images, and other elements. Content editing: Another bit of magic that PDF editors unlock is the ability to modify text; insert, resize, and move images; and reorganize pages in the PDF. A good one will perform these tasks as easily as in a text document or slide deck, allowing in-line editing, dragging-and dropping graphics, and adding or removing hyperlinks. Review and annotate: A good PDF editor should also let you or anyone else using it add comments and other annotations to PDF files during review. It should have tools to mark up both text documents and graphic-heavy files like webpages.

Hughes And Kettner Customer Service
Common options include sticky notes, callout boxes, highlighting, freehand drawing tools, and stamps with messages like “approved,” “revised,” and “confidential.”. Security: All businesses deal with documents containing sensitive data. Look for a PDF editor that includes security features that allow access for authorized eyes only. Good options will usually offer several levels of security, including password protection, permissions setting, and content redaction, which “blacks out” selected text and images. Most PDF editors will also offer one or more ways to electronically sign documents. Mobile support: While deep PDF editing is best done on a desktop, it’s nice to be able to review and annotate files when you’re out and about.
Hughes And Kettner Tubeman Manual
While PDFs can typically be reviewed in any PDF reader or editor, regardless of which one they were created in, consider looking for an editor that has a dedicated mobile app, is optimized for mobile devices, or allows cloud access to features through a mobile browser. One of the great things about a PDF is that it can be read and edited in any PDF program regardless of which one it was created in. So beyond the features outlined here, let your personal preferences guide you in making your decision. All PDF reviews If you want to learn more about all of the PDF editors we reviewed, see the list below. We’re kicking off our guide with six PDF editors, but we’ll continue to evaluate more as time goes on—as well as re-evaluate those we’ve already reviewed.

Many of us are now at the point where we're trading in old smartphones for new. The big question is often, what to do with the old one?
Possible solutions include leaving it in a drawer; trading it in; downloading maps and creating a dedicated in-car GPS navigator (Google Maps are now downloadable, so you won't need an expensive mobile connection because you can update while at home on WiFi); or turning it into a free webcam.
We'll look at some more solutions in the future, but for now, the last of these is a nice option.
See update published Apr 2, 2020: How to Turn an Old Android Device Into a Cool, Useful Gadget
Tumblr media
Turning an old Android phone into a webcam -- or weathercam, baby monitor, petcam, nannycam -- and streaming the image over a network is fun project, and accomplished with an existing WiFi connection.
Here's how to go about it.
Step 1: Verify the phone's network functions
Open the Settings drawer on the retired phone's Home page and browse to Wireless and Networks. Select Turn on WiFi.
The phone will obtain an IP address and connect if it is configured for your home network. If it won't connect, open WiFi Settings -- it's in the same area -- and choose Add WiFi network.
Then enter the network details like the network name -- called SSID -- and password. It's the same information you use to connect a laptop to the network.
Test the connection by browsing to any Web page.
Step 2: Download a webcam app
Browse to the Google Play store and look for a suitable camera streaming app. I've been using Pavel Khlebovich's free IP Webcam, with which I have had success.
Click on the install button and allow the app to install to your device.
Press Start Server or similar within the app and the camera video image will appear on the phone.
Step 3: Configure the viewing medium
Open a Chrome or Firefox browser on a laptop that's connected to the same router as the phone. You configured this network on the phone in the earlier step.
Tip: The laptop doesn't have to be on the same wireless network, just the same network.
Enter the IP address of the phone into the browser address bar.
Tip: IP Webcam will tell you what the address is if you click on the 'How Do I Connect' button within the app. It will be something like 'http://192.168.1.3:8080.' The ':8080' is related to a port -- the phone is serving the image and audio much like a website does.
Tumblr media
Press the laptop's Enter button and the phone's webcam server options page will display on the laptop.
Choose Use Browser Built-In Viewer, or similar, if you're using Chrome or Firefox -- they're tested to work.
Alternatively, choose Use Java Browser Plugin and agree to any security prompts if you're using another browser. You may have to install Java Plug-in from the resulting link.
Tip: It can take a moment for the video to display.
Step 4: Locate the phone
Point the camera at the subject using the on-screen image for placement -- at a dog run or driveway, for instance. Window panes make good weatherproofing -- place the camera inside pointing out of the window.
Tip: Choose a location near a power outlet.
Neat interior placement results can be accomplished with failed automotive phone cradles -- the kind that are supposed to attach to the windshield and hold your phone while driving work well for this purpose, if not for their intended one. They often come with double-sided tape. Just make sure the cradle doesn't obscure the phone's camera hole.
Tip: Don't point the camera into the sun. Try to obtain light from behind for best images.
Step 5: Set up power functions
Webcam Mobile Phones & Portable Devices Driver Download For Windows 10
Connect a USB power cable from phone to a wall outlet. Two-year-old and older phones can suffer from battery degradation -- the battery holds less charge and expires sooner -- so don't rely on battery power for long-term camera use.
Webcam Mobile Phones & Portable Devices Driver Download For Windows 7
Step 6: Configure the audio medium
Select Click Here to Play Audio with Browser, and the audio will commence. Perform this step last to avoid potential feedback, which can occur if the phone and laptop are close to each other.
Step 7: Take a look
View the resulting video and audio on the laptop.

Patrick Nelson has been a professional writer since 1992. He was editor and publisher of the music industry trade publication Producer Report and has written for a number of technology blogs. Nelson studied design at Hornsey Art School and wrote the cult-classic novel Sprawlism. His introduction to technology was as a nomadic talent scout in the eighties, where regular scrabbling around under hotel room beds was necessary to connect modems with alligator clips to hotel telephone wiring to get a fax out. He tasted down and dirty technology, and never looked back.

Blog Post 3: Websites
My Website
In order to secure my domain, which is digitalartbycorrah.com, and subsequent email address, I used 1&1, and paid a small fee of just ÂŁ1.20. I was then able to port my domain over to Adobe Portfolio, the website builder that I am using.
Website 1: Sabato Visconti (www.sabatobox.com)
Sabato Visconti covers a range of different Digital Art Themes such as:
· Glitch Art
· New Media
· Photography
· Illustration
Visconti displays his work by what theme is work comes under:
· Glitch Photography/ Post-Photography
· Glitch Video and GIF Art
· 3D Art and Animation
· ROM Corruption and Video Game Art
· Glitch Design and New Media
· Traditional Photography
· Illustration
· Curatorial Projects
At the bottom of the navigation list for this website is:
· About
· Press and Exhibitions
· Contact
· Store
Interface Features of Sabato Visconti’s Website:
Visconti sets out his website in a 4 row and 3 column display, however he doesn’t have a header bar in his website, instead he utilises the side navigation, and on mobile, the button of the hamburger menu that opens up on the left hand side of the screen, sits on the right.
The website does not harness a bottom navigation and Visconti’s social media links are listed in the side navigation, he also lists the insignia of the Creative Commons and the dates for when his website was founded and when it was last updated, being 2011-2021.
Pages and Collections
I studied two of the collections on this website, I studied the layout to check for continuity, as well as other features. The first of the collections that I decided to study is Glitch Photography and Post Photography.
At the top of the page, Visconti uses too much text to explain the section, and doesn’t not utilise a legible font face, the text actually takes up half of the collection page. The amount of text at the top of the page could actually drive people to look away for Visconti’s website.
The Ghosts of Brimfield Collection
All images used in this collection have the Red hover-overs with magnifying glasses on them in order to zoom in on the images in the collections. The grid system in place across the rest of the website is in place on this page, giving consistency to the general CSS of the website the grid System in place for the collections as a great mixture of sizes to display all the different parts of Visconti’s work. This gives a good sense of dimensionality and depth to Visconti’s collections.
Illustration Collection
In the Illustration collection, the same features regarding layout and also shows a huge depth in collection, there is no set theme for example, in this collection has aminated illustration as well as standard illustration.
Throughout Visconti’s website, formal language is used, giving the correct kind of tone and desired level of professionality. The layout of the website is exceptionally good and has a fantastic structure, and this structure gives a grounding for a huge amount of content to be displayed on the website, proving that content is king.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Website 2: Kelly Cooper Photography (www.kellycooperphotography.com)
This website is not as well laid out as Sabato Visconti’s website. There is not a huge amount of structure to the website.
A particularly good example of this is the fact that the website has a header, but it is not a sticky header, meaning that there is not constant navigation through the website. In the header, the logo is placed centrally in the header and below it, the other pages of the website are listed as follows:
· Gallery
· Business (ABOUT ME)
· Fashion & Editorial
· Photo Blog
This website has the contact details of the photographer listed at the bottom, however a huge similarity to Visconti’s website, is that both of them have no link to the CVs of either Cooper or Visconti. She has not listed her phone number in the 5-3-3, meaning it is not clearly listed.
The Photographer has not listed a professional email, e.g., an “info@_________________.com”, a Gmail email address has been listed, which is not hugely Professional.
They have used a small social media icon in order to list a link to the Instagram account associated with the website.
On the home page, the photos used are in a grid, but they need to be downsized, so as to make more room for content or so the page is not as vast.
About Page:
She uses a profile photo of herself and it is a good photo of her. Her about me section however is far too long. A good and catchy about section should be around 30-50 words, rather than 3 paragraphs. However, in the navigation in the header bar, the about me section is actually listed as business.
She lists her experience and location in the Business/About Me section. However, in fitting style to the rest of the website, all of the pictures used in the Business/About Me Section are overly large yet perfectly aligned. The size of the pictures causes too much space to be taken up by the photographs. However, the contact details and social media account are listed in the footer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full Site Critique
Across almost the whole website, all of the photograph’s used are far too big and could do with a downsize, so as to make more room for more content
. Unlike Visconti’s website, the space hasn’t been used wisely and content in this website is not king. Content being king in this website is non-existent, what this website does is show off a few pictures, in a neatly aligned grid, but it needs to show off more in the neatly aligned grids that she has used, not just 3 or 4 in a row. However, these grids give for fantastic organisation.
In a difference to nearly the rest of the website, the photo blog page actually uses a decent grid, and all of the photographs are all of a decent size and there is room for more on the page. The blog also carries relevant posts, with the surrounding theme being the work of the photographer.
The overall CSS of the website is pure white and is not hugely aesthetically pleasing, there are also no user interface features, not like Sabato Visconti’s website, where he has colour hover-overs implemented on all images and there are colour changing hovers on all of the titles on the navigation. In Kelly Cooper’s website, on the header navigation, there are white hover overs on the page headers.
The Gallery is no where near as organised on Kelly Cooper’s Website, as it is on Sabato Visconti’s website. Even though Kelly Cooper’s website does not hold as much content as Sabato Visconti’s website, but it requires the same level of organisation.
The way in which Sabato Visconti organises his website, is how I should aim to organise my own as my work comes under many different themes and can’t just smash them all together in to one page, I have to ensure that all of my work is organised in to the right theme so that it is clear that my work encompasses a myriad of different things, not just one. I need to show my versatility throughout my website and not just make myself look like a boring cookie cutter digital artist.

BEST IMAGE SEARCH ENGINE: HOW TO REVERSE SEARCH IMAGES ON GOOGLE EASILY
With a picture program , you'll sort through and find an excellent selection of images you'll use in your online store. By learning the way to search images on Google, you’ll be ready to find images labelled for reuse that you simply can use for your logo, website banner, blog post, or maybe your Facebook ad.
In this article, you’ll learn what a picture program is, and which image search engines and apps you'll use to reverse look for photos.
What Is a picture Search Engine?
An image program may be a database of images which will be searched through the utilization of keywords, in order that users can find valuable images. Google’s image program is that the most comprehensive and famous image program today and was created on July 12, 2001.
In 2001 Google noticed an enormous search demand for a selected query that its regular search couldn't do justice for. This demand was for Jennifer Lopez’s green Versace dress, and Google noticed that a picture result would be far better than the text results that were delivered some time past .
The Best Image Search Engines
There are many image search engines within the world. Some are very broad and every one encompassing, like Google and Yahoo, and a few are niche and confined, like HONMedia. What these websites all have in common may be a database of images which will be searched through using keywords, tags, or topics.
The best within the market are those which will provide the simplest match to an enquiry query, and even have an outsized enough database to cater for his or her audience.
Here are the simplest image search engines that you simply can use:
1. Google Images
Have you always wanted to understand the way to search images on Google? Using Google Images you'll look for images to use for your website, blog, ads, and other marketing content. While not all images found in Google images are often used for commercial purposes without permission, Google Images has an in depth collection for you to sort through.
As the best image program within the market, you’ll find the foremost extensive collection of images on Google Images than the other platform. you'll look for specific products like kitchen utensils, or niches like running, which you'll use in your business.
How does Google image search work? With Google Images, you'll sort through images of specific sizes, color, what sort of image it's , and more, by simply typing in keywords. you'll then sort images by their license by clicking Tools then Usage Rights. You’ll want to use a picture that’s labeled for reuse. Images thereunder section are often used for blog posts, ads, or other marketing activities. You’ll notice that the majority of the pictures in these sections come from a spread of free stock photo sites.
2. Yahoo Images
Yahoo Image Search comes in second place together of the simplest image search engines because you'll find great images for each niche. once you type your niche into the search bar you’ll be shown a spread of images. You’ll want to vary the license, see top right corner, to incorporate ‘free to share and use commercially’ otherwise you can choose ‘free to switch , share and use commercially’ if you propose to switch images in any way. You’ll find professional lifestyle images, images on white backgrounds, graphics and more which you'll use on your store.
3. Bing Images
Bing Image Search is analogous to Google Images and Yahoo Images so it’s another great picture program you'll use to source images. Type your niche or what you would like a picture of into the Bing Image search bar. You’ll notice on the far right side there’s a Filter button. once you click it, you’ll see a dropdown appear. Click on License. You’ll want to settle on images that are free for commercial use.
4. PicSearch
PicSearch features a collection of three billion images. It's no wonder it’s one among the simplest image search engines. The image program sources pictures from a spread of internet sites . you'll choose between lifestyle pictures to stock photos. You’ll still got to obtain permission to use the pictures on the platform as per the disclaimer on the footer of their website. However, you’ll know which website the photographs come from making it easy to contact for permission.
5. Yandex
Yandex is another free website with an outsized database of images to look . It’s the foremost popular program in Russia, but small compared to its competitors. If the database has nothing to satisfy the precise search, it'll show similar images to the utilization . you'll also use Yandex for reverse image search.
6. Pinterest Visual Search Tool
Pinterest visual search tool may be a fun thing to play with. Different to most other tools you'll zoom into a neighborhood of a picture and reverse search this to seek out similar images, or pins. the very fact that you simply don’t got to search the entire image makes this a really intriguing tool. To use it you would like to check in to Pinterest and begin pinning things.
7. Creative Commons
Creative Commons is one among the foremost extensive image collections making it to the list of the simplest image search engines. You’ll be ready to search images from a variety of picture search engines like Google Images, Flickr, Wikimedia Commons, Pixabay, and more. Whether you’re trying to find an image that represents your niche or of a famous celebrity, you’ll make certain to seek out images.
8. Flickr
Flickr may be a unique image program . the bulk of images come from amateur and professional photographers, who are sharing their work on Flickr. you'll use a spread of various filters when checking out a picture , and even follow people on Flickr or join groups.
What is Reverse Image Search?
Reverse image search may be a program technology that creates it possible for a user to input a picture file as an enquiry query and return results that are associated with that image. Image search is when a user is in a position to seek out images associated with the search term that they need typed.
Most search engines offer reverse image search which will be helpful if you’re trying to find images concerning your search. Or within the case that you simply have a picture and you're eager to dig deeper into it, maybe get to understand where it originated, or determine more details about the owner of the image.
How to Reverse Image Search?
You can do that fairly easily on desktop using the Google Reverse Image Search option. All you've got to try to to is:
Go to images.google.com,
Click the camera icon that's appearing within the search bar,
Then paste within the URL of a picture that you simply have seen somewhere online, or
You can manually upload a picture from your computer that you simply have saved, or
Drag a picture from another window.
Best Reverse Image Search Tools
If you’re trying to find other tools for reverse image search, we’ve got you covered. Here are some additional tools:
1. TinEye
To use this tool you’ll got to add the image link to the search bar to seek out a variety of internet sites and stores selling an equivalent product as you. Over 19 billion images are looked for on the platform since its inception making it an excellent resource for reverse image search.
2. CTRLQ
CTRLQ may be a Google tool that permits you to upload your photo onto the platform and find who else has posted your image. After you upload a picture , you'll click “Show Matches” to seek out other websites together with your picture. You’ll be directed to Google’s search page where you’ll be shown your exact picture on other websites.

The Cherry On Top Of The Fruitcake
Hello from Kathmandu! I hope you are happy and healthy.
Tumblr media
It may not surprise you to learn that I am considered just a bit unusual or even strange in certain parts of the world, and very strange or even bizarre in some other places. Thailand is one of those places.
This week’s eight hundred or so words are from the book Reincarnation Through Common Sense, and is about a half-year spent simultaneously in heaven and hell. I was living in a small Buddhist monastery/nunnery in extremely rural southern Thailand. The hosts that rescued and cared for me accounted for most of the heaven part. As is true for so many folks, the thoughts bouncing around in my skull accounted for much of the hell part.
What my robed hosts thought to be the most fun during this experience was that I already knew how to laugh in hell.
They taught me how to get out.
Thanks for reading and clicking. Be well. Love, Tenzin
“The most revolutionary act that a person in this country can perform is to be happy.” Patch Adams
p.s. As always, if you find these weekly bits bothersome, let me know and I’ll stop sending them to you. If you find the reading at all enjoyable, please — it literally takes only seconds — click one or more or all of the highlighted backlinks following this paragraph. This simple process is completely without risk, cost, or difficulty. All it does is bring you to the site that is highlighted. Each click is a big help in pushing Fearless Puppy up in the Google rankings. Whether you browse the sites or close the windows immediately, your help has been delivered. Thank you!

The Cherry on Top of the Fruitcake
Many tourists act a little wilder while on vacation in a foreign country than they do at home. This is even more pronounced in Thailand where there are so very many opportunities to do the wild-and-crazy. The locals around here are usually very tolerant of tourist behavior, but they talk about you. This is true anywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you are in Thailand, Paris, or at the North Pole. If you are from out of town and a little different, at least a few of the locals are going to bust your chops. Gossip of this type happens whether you are wild and crazy or not.
There may also be some finger pointing and giggling. Most of the finger pointing is just good-natured amazement, especially in a place like rural Southeast Asia where the locals find a zoom lens camera about as miraculous as we would find a working intergalactic starship with transporter beam. Mild shock about foreign customs or bafflement with advanced technologies is harmless. But those are not the topics here. The topic here is what to do when something that is actually malicious comes your way. This topic is headlined by the concept of (figuratively, of course) “staying in your own canoe.” It includes letting bad stuff that flies in one of your ears fly as quickly out the other. Remembering these two notions can be strong support beams for an unshakable perseverance in the face of adversity, insult, or even danger.
In spite of heavy competition from my fellow travelers for the position as cherry on top of the international fruitcake, I have become known in southern Thailand as “THE Crazy Alien.” Most of my fellow non-locals who get any special attention from the natives are simply drunk, loud, and usually between 20 and 40 years old. The locals expect this. But when they see an American person who is a bit older, they suppose that he is like the Americans they see on TV. So when they look at me, they see something that falls very far out of their frame of reference. Here is a person they cannot explain. He is not at all normal.
He is living in a Buddhist Temple on a foreign continent without studying Buddhism. He cannot communicate in or understand the native language. No one within miles speaks English. He has no money at all, has no home waiting for him anywhere and no way to get there if he did. And he is writing a book about a culture and religion that he is slowly learning very little about. When the book is finished, he has plans to get back to America somehow and (with no business connections or related experience at all) sell novice writing for lots of money. He will then donate all the money to build combination educational/spiritual resorts that are entertaining destinations for guests. The main purpose of these resorts (even more so than benefitting seekers and guests) will be to perpetually return huge profits that will fund an increase in the number of Wisdom Teachers in the world. The purpose of that increase is to help, to as great an extent as possible, alleviate suffering in human beings and in all other living creatures affected by humans. His long-term goal is to build enough of these resorts to acquire enough profits to make it financially possible to increase the total number of Wisdom Professionals in the world by one percent.
Logic dictates that the odds of his success may be roughly the same as the odds of one person winning a multimillion-dollar lottery jackpot prize twice in the same week.
The Head Teacher and most respected member of this rural Thai community has given all the compassion of Mother Teresa to the foreign lunatic, including hospitality and privileges usually afforded only to people wearing robes. The American cherry-on-top-of-the-fruitcake person works on the writing in his isolated cabin with the intensity and introspection of a lone monk, taking occasional breaks to hang out in silence with the real monks and nuns. He writes with pens found on the street, on napkins and scrap paper scavenged from the nearest Internet cafe twenty miles away. He stops only once or twice a month in order to completely fall off the other end of life’s pendulum by acquiring massive doses of expense-free alcohol, ganja, and lodging from friends that manage fancy tourist resorts on the beaches near that Internet cafe.
Even the folks living and working in the resort towns are not used to seeing behavior like this — not even from the most certifiably loony and highly medicated tourists. I must seem even more bizarre to those of my neighbors who have never been out of this two hundred resident hamlet adjoining the Temple grounds, and are unfamiliar with those tourists.
It is very lucky for me that Thai folks respect crazy more than Americans do.
Sometimes I wonder exactly what they think of me — but not often.
Every moment spent thinking about what other people are thinking about me is a moment I’m not thinking about what I actually need to be thinking about. It would surely suck to be on my deathbed watching someone else’s perceptions of my life flashing before my eyes.
I don’t have the time to worry and wonder if other people think I’m nuts. I have books to write and Wisdom Teachers to sponsor.
But I do have a sense of logic. It is easy to see how what I’m doing might look strange to others. It is even easy to understand why some folks might think me a bonafide lunatic.
Maybe I am one.
But if you are reading this, maybe I’m not.
Many thanks to the friends of Fearless Puppy at the Pema Boutique Hotel for their wonderful help and support.

Getting Started in Public Relations
So, a few months ago a student on Middlesex University’s journalism degree approached me with some questions about how a journalism student could prepare for work in public relations. Anyone who knows me will be entirely unsurprised to discover that I answered at somewhat stupid length. I think some of the stuff here might be of more general use to those at the start of their careers (although some of it is particular to students at Middlesex) so I thought I’d put it up here.
What are the most important skills you need to work in PR?
Rather than try to answer this myself I’m going to defer to the annual “State of the Profession” report from the Chartered Institute of Pubic Relations (CIPR – attached, along with the 2019 “PR and Communication Census” from the PRCA – Public Relations & Communications Association) which will both give you some insight into the current state of the profession.
The CIPR report (p28) sets out the top five skills most valued by recruiters as:
Copywriting and editing
Social media relations
Media relations
PR programmes/campaign planning
Research, evaluation and measurement
Writing well, being able to write in a variety of voices for different media, and having a working grasp of grammar and punctuation are still the fundamental skills for PR staff. Increasingly, those working in public relations have shifted from being “content prompters” (encouraging others to create material) to being “content creators” and while there can be lots of bells and whistles to this in terms of production skills, the basic requirement is to be able to craft a convincing message – and, most often, that requires a skill with words. No one (almost no one, anyway) is born a good writer – writing is a muscle that is strengthened by reading good writing (and paying attention to why it is good) and practice.
There’s still an assumption amongst some – older – people working in PR that the young (being “digital natives”) have a sort of innate understanding of how social media works that older generations lack. I’ve, generally, not found this to be true (being a consumer is not the same as being a creator) but you can take advantage of this prejudice if you can demonstrate an ability to use social media effectively. Having your own accounts with strong followings and interesting content (but possibly not too interesting) will be regarded as a definite positive by many employers.
Media relations – being able to demonstrate that you understand the needs of journalists, influencers and clients and that you have the ability to develop networks, manage relationships and build contacts remains a fundamental part of the PR role. The way these relationships work is different from sector to sector (financial PR works differently from fashion PR which works differently from political PR). The old-fashioned idea of schmoozing clients over long, expenses-funded, lunches (that, on a good day, became long, expenses-funded dinners) is, in these more austere times, very sadly, largely a thing of the past. But managing professional relationships is still crucial. Some people have a natural talent for the personal connection stuff, other people (like me) have to fake it by keeping meticulous files on contacts, their interests and previous collaborations.
Programme and campaign planning is not something I’d expect a new hire to be able to manage off the bat, but it’s useful if they have an idea how planning works and how their contributions have to fit into the broader scheme of things. If you want an introduction to the theory and basic outline of planning, I highly recommend Anne Gregory’s “Planning and Managing Public Relations Campaigns” – they’ve just published a new edition.
Increasingly pubic relations is expected to demonstrate a clear “return on investment” to managers or clients. So, the measurement and evaluation of projects has become more and more important. In journalism – where clicks tend to be king – measurement tends to be relatively straightforward. For PR it can be more complex – since individual public relations activities are often part of a longer-term strategy. The PR industry has developed the “Barcelona Principles” (introduction here: https://www.prnewsonline.com/barcelona-principles-2-0/) and the AMEC framework (https://amecorg.com/amecframework/home/framework/introduction/) as attempts to standardise and regularise measurement across the industry – but even where these are not formally applied, it is increasingly expected that PR campaigns and individual pieces of work will have clearly defined and measurable outcomes.
Is there any advice you have for me changing from a journalism field to pr?
So, as noted above, the ability to write and to manipulate words remains a key connecting tissue between the PR and journalism industries and if you have other content creation skills from your journalism background (audio, video, social or digital media) then you will definitely be able to leverage those in the PR field.
One of the most common complaints about PRs from journalists is that they get bombarded by useless stuff that isn’t relevant to their job (https://www.prweek.com/article/1668923/pr-pros-dont-understand-story-is-say-majority-journalists) and I think this is a fair criticism of a lot of bad PR. If you can demonstrate an ability to do the research into what the journalists/influencers you are targeting need and can use, then you’ll be doing your clients a favour.
I think one of the things that most journalists don’t get about PR is that, when done well, it is (usually) a much longer term and more strategic role than journalism. Good PR isn’t just about churning out today’s story (in the form of a press release) but developing long-term approach that establishes your client in a particular niche or as having a particular relevance. So, good PR isn’t just reactive – it involves being prepared for events and having crisis plans and developing campaigns that fit into strategies that deliver results over relatively long periods. You do, sometimes, get the buzz from tight deadlines and needed to respond instantly to crises but in between it’s about creating relationships that sometimes don’t pay off for years.
Do you have any suggestions on how you stand out in the industry?
My instinctive response to this – because of my background – is don’t stand out. My experience is in PR for political/social campaigning (unions, charities, causes) and one of the mantras on that side of the industry is “never become the story” and, as such, I’m always a bit suspicious of PRs who spend a lot of time promoting themselves.
That said, I recognise that not all areas of the PR industry are like that and that you do need to build a reputation within the industry.
I’m a big believer in professional standards ïżœïżœ I’m a Chartered member of the CIPR – which means I do my “continuous professional development” (CPD) each year and get a little badge that says (to me, and I hope to others) that I’m a good boy who takes his job seriously.
As a student at Middlesex you are automatically entitled to membership of the PRCA – you can sign up here (https://www.prca.org.uk/membership/join – make sure to use your Mdx email address). Their website has lots of interesting and useful links and (in normal times) lots of opportunities to connect with others. You can also, I think, get free access to view their online training – which is normally £200 or so a session.
I’m very sceptical about specific “networking events” as they very often attract people who only have a very instrumental view of building contacts (what can they get out of it for themselves) but – in normal times – London is great for attending industry related events where you can rub shoulders with, get to know and maybe build up relationships with people at high-levels in the industry. Again, the PRCA website is a good place to start – if we’re ever allowed to gather in the same room as other humans again. But right now it’s actually easier to attend things because Zoom calls tend to be a bit less exclusive or exclusionary and – at least for me (I’m not great at the schmoozing bit) – a lot less stressful, though clearly the intensity of engagement is lower online.
Managing your own PR persona is important. A professional website (don’t do what I do, do what I say!) that shows off your skills/abilities/personality can be useful – especially if you can keep it up-to-date with something like a blog that discusses issues in the industry. Similarly, a strong LinkedIn profile can help and good, professional social media accounts that you use to engage in discussions about the industry and build up connections (not just spam people for job opportunities).
Finally, and I say this to all my students, there’s a mindset amongst some people that you can’t do PR or show off your abilities unless someone else has given you instructions – so students sit around complaining about lack of internship opportunities or the chance to show what they can do. This is not true. I am an internship-sceptic – too many of them offer poor opportunities to learn or a real foot in the door. Rather than waiting for the perfect internship, I encourage professionals starting out to “intern for themselves” – find a cause or an issue you care about (a local charity or a community group) and volunteer. Develop a portfolio of stuff that you’ve done that shows you are a self-starter and that you have the skills employers are looking for so that you’re starting to define your future career on your own terms. I graduated into he middle of a recession in the early 1990s and spent two years volunteering – building up a body of work and contacts while doing jobs I didn’t much like (barman, supermarket shelf stacker
) – until I made my first break into working in journalism.
Lastly, is there anything I can do or read to keep myself informed?
This lot should get you started

MAGAZINES PR Week (https://www.prweek.com/uk) is probably the key industry magazine. It’s online content is mostly behind a paywall but you can register for free for limited access and there’s the blog (https://www.prweek.com/uk/blog). I also like the CIPR’s magazine “Influence” – but the print version is only available members and the online version is relatively limited in content (https://influenceonline.co.uk/).

How Live Caption Maker Ava Is Taking A ‘Path To Self-Empowerment’ In Making Video Calls Accessible To The Hearing Impaired

How Live Caption Maker Ava Is Taking A ‘Path To Self-Empowerment’ In Making Video Calls Accessible To The Hearing Impaired
The Ava logo.
Update 12/10: Reworked the language in the last paragraph to indicate Duchemin has published his blog post on his company’s news.
Ava on Thursday announced significant updates to its live-captioning software that the company says will make virtual meetings more accessible to those in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Additionally, the company announced they’ve raised $4.5 million in new venture-capital funding, led by firms Initialized Capital and Khosla Ventures, bringing the total amount of funding to date to $6.5 million.
In a press release, Ava shared two marquee new features rolling out today: Ava Closed Captions and Ava Scribe. Closed Captions provides real-time, automated artificial intelligence-based captioning to internet-based meetings on the Mac, Windows, and in a web browser. Meanwhile, Scribe does the same real-time captioning but adds another layer: users can request a professional scribe to supplement the computer-driven transcription with a human element. Ava claims this combination of human and machine gives users instant access to captions that are 99% accurate.
In a world that continues to mire amidst the coronavirus pandemic, good social-distancing practices have dictated that nearly everyone needs to work and study from home. This means people have had lessons in accessibility as a concept: finding ways to accessibly adapt their workflows such that they can remain productive and sociable remotely. Chief among these new ways of working is taking meetings and connecting with loved ones over video-centric tools like Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, and WebEx. While this software, particularly Zoom, have come to redefine what “getting together” means, one significant-yet-undervalued disadvantage is their inaccessibility to people who are hearing impaired. For the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, the lack of adequate captioning, if any, can mean entire conversations are lost because she or he cannot understand what a speaker is saying. At that point, Zoom isn’t so great.
As a child of Deaf adults who has experienced firsthand the hardships of conversing with family over holiday meals, it is this inaccessibility that led Ava co-founder and CEO Thibault Duchemin to develop Closed Captions and Scribe. In essence, Closed Captions and Scribe’s raison d’ĂȘtre is to bridge the “digital divide,” so to speak, between someone with a hearing impairment and someone with hearing.
“A paradigm shift has to happen [towards] autonomy and independence,” Duchemin said in a recent interview with me. “The Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities are empowering themselves to make accessibility happen themselves, instead of expecting others to do it.”
Some 450 million people worldwide who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing—5% of the global population—are being denied their fundamental right to access basic information, according to Duchemin. Rarely are accommodations made for job interviews, classes, and social media outlets like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Compounding the problem, he added, is lip-reading accomplishes only so much; only about a quarter of information is understood. This is why captioning and sign language interpreters are so vital to public service—here in California, it’s heartening to see Governor Gavin Newsom deliver his daily Covid-19 press conferences with an ASL interpreter off to the side. The updates on case count and public safety measures are too important for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities to be left out.
Duchemin said he and his team “took the path to self-empowerment” to bringing accessible solutions to Covid-wrought problems. He lamented the lack of societal empathy for accessibility, frustrated at how diversity and inclusion has become such a bellwether amongst proponents—and yet people with disabilities are often forgotten.
He said while disability advocates have been banging the inclusion drum forever, it’s necessary to take up the cause yourself because the change is so glacially slow. “At some point, you just can’t take it anymore,” Duchemin said. “You say stop. You stop counting on companies, governments, and society to change fast enough.”
The moral? Ableism, confronted far less, runs just as rampant as racism and sexism.
Privilege is not solely a matter of skin color or gender. Privilege is also about the ability to be non-disabled—to move, to communicate, to do things “normally.” In Ava’s case, privilege is having the ability to hear what others are saying on a Zoom call.
The urgency to take matters into their own hands meant demand for Ava “skyrocketed” as the company worked to make video calling accessible to all. The Ava Free plan was altered such that there is an unlimited time allotment in perpetuity.
“The coronavirus has hit hard Deaf and hard-of-hearing people on communication matters,” Duchemin said. “With everybody wearing masks outside, it has been impossible to read lips. This accelerated the numbers of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people trying speech-to-text apps like Ava for the first time.”
Importantly, Ava is cross-platform; there are desktop apps for macOS, Windows, and the web, as well as mobile ones for iOS and Android. Duchemin said this “inclusivity,” as he coined it, is crucial because other companies like Google and Microsoft have siloed their live-captioning tech to work only within their respective ecosystems.
Feedback from beta-testers on Closed Captions and Scribe has been overwhelmingly positive. Duchemin said there’s “been a lot of surprise” to Ava’s capabilities since testing began in August. “After years and years of using makeshift solutions, an all-in-one-click captioner in your pocket [via the mobile app] can come as a shock,” he said.
Duchemin added there’s been a lot of excitement around the products, and the circumstances surrounding the virus meant the team “didn’t want to delay too much” in shipping because they saw the immediacy of the software’s usefulness to customers.
At a macro level, Ava’s technology is a testament to how artificial intelligence and machine learning can be applied to technology in such a way that truly changes and enriches people’s lives. The same can be said for Apple’s work in building People Detection for iOS and Google building the Look to Speak app for Android. Practical applications for AI and ML will only grow over time, as the technology matures and especially as wearable tech like AirPods (and more) continue their rise in prominence.
Duchemin has written a blog post wherein he explains his feelings about self-empowerment when it comes to accessibility, and how his company’s ethos strives to provide people tools with which to harness that power. In context of the pandemic, Duchemin writes the onset of Covid has “poured gasoline on prior accessibility fires.”
You can learn more about Ava’s mission and its technology on their website.
