why has no one mentioned the rocky horror reference in lisa frankenstein. im not even that huge of a rocky horror fan but i feel like there must be an overlap between fanbase demographics (gay, unsettling, and 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂) and someone has to have noticed.

somehow i cant find a single clip of it, but at some point lisa shouts “damn it, janet!” in the same cadence as the song from rocky horror.

August Movie Reviews

I haven’t been in the mood to do full reviews for a bit so here is a list of everything I’ve watched in August and what I thought!

Re-animator (1985) dir. Stuart Gordon: 5/5 ⭐️ this movie was so much fun! A really campy and beautifully done take on Frankenstein, two grad students (with homosexual undertones) brings people back to life with beautifully done practical effects. Will definitely be rewatching soon.

Bride of Re-animator (1990) dir. Brian Yuzna: 5/5 ⭐️ I can’t decide if which of these movies I enjoyed more, they were both so entertaining but personally the design of the undead bride is absolutely breathtaking and one of my favorite designs of all time. I can’t recommend this movie enough, such a fun watch.

The Truman Show (1998) dir. Peter Weir: 5/5 ⭐️ I am dumbfounded that this movie is classified as a comedy and not a horror comedy, the plot of this movie is genuinely one of the most terrifying things I can think of. (Heed caution watching this movie if you struggle with de-realization) This movie terrified me, made me cry, and had me clapping and cheering at the end. Fantastic movie.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) dir. Dan O’Bannon: 5/5 ⭐️ As a huge lover of zombie movies I’ve got to classify this as my favorite zombie movie of all time. It’s super funny, the characters are awesome, and the zombie design is fantastic. The Tarman is my favorite zombie design ever and I LOVE how we get a reason for the brain eating from the actual zombies themselves. If you love campy 80’s horrors and zombies this is a must see.

The Evil Dead (1981) dir. Sam Raimi: 5/5 ⭐️ I am a huge evil dead fan so I am biased when I say I love all the evil dead movies. I love a gory horror movie that does not take itself serious at all. It’s so funny and campy and is just a fun watch if you can enjoy a movie without needing to dissect it. The gore and practical effects are so gross and awesome and the demons are a great time.

I Saw the Tv Glow (2024) dir. Jane Schoenbrun: 5/5⭐️ Everyone should watch this movie but if you are transgender you HAVE to see this movie. It portrays the horror, damage, and suffering that living your life in the closet can do to you. I could spend hours dissecting this movie and relating it to the trans experience but I guarantee if you relate to having grown up in any capacity as the wrong gender you will be bawling by the end of this movie. An absolute must watch.

Sleepaway Camp (1983) dir. Robert Hiltzik: 5/5 ⭐️ I love a fun slasher movie that takes place at a summer camp and this one does not disappoint. While trying not to give too much away if you haven’t seen it, some people believe this movie to be transphobic, and while I understand where they’re coming from I completely disagree. I consider this movie to be a trans allegory showing how dangerous it is to someone’s mental health to force them to be someone they’re not and the damage it can inflict to them and others. Great movie with a great ending.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) dir. Yorgos Lanthimos: 5/5 ⭐️It took me two watches to really appreciate this movie and I can’t fully talk about my thoughts without spoiling it, but this is a great psychological horror with such weird characters. If you’re watching this movie and wondering why every character is SO strange, talks weird, moves weird, and acts weird then just know that is absolutely intentional! Great watch and I recommend a few watches to really absorb the movie!

House of 1000 Corpses (2003) dir. Rob Zombie: 4.5/5 ⭐️ My boyfriend called this movie a love letter to horror and I have to agree. This is a fun campy horror that really has a lot of fun in its character designs and creative kills. It’s both very comedic while being disturbing and bizarre. (And Captain Spaulding is obviously queer coded, just how I like my favorite horror characters to be). A fun watch for any horror fan.

Blackfish (2013) dir. Gabriela Cowperthwaite: 4/5 ⭐️ I know I am 11 years late to watching this movie, and although not the best documentary I’ve ever seen, it got its point across very well. I had known about a lot that was in this doc but I still learned a lot that I hadn’t known. A very heart wrenching story about animal abuse at Sea World but with must know information. Even though it brought change (sea world is no longer allowed to capture or breed Orcas) I’m still distraught that Sea World is still operational to this day.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024) dir. Zelda Williams: 5/5 ⭐️ this movie is absolutely fantastic. Campy, funny, aesthetic, and romantic all wrapped in one. The characters were written in such a fun and in your face way. If you were ever “the weird girl” this movie is absolutely made for you. I love Lisa’s character so much and I love how throughout the movie she worked to be herself despite everyone BUT a dead guy wishing she were “normal”. Cinema is so back, this is the kind of movie I want to see.

Edit* yes technically the truman show is classified as a comedy *I* don’t consider it a comedy but I didn’t make the movie lol (well i guess technically a psychological comedy drama but yeah)

It is 2003. I am 4 years old. Every day I'm dropped off at the daycare center in the community college my dad attends. All my friends there are girls. We play dress up with a big milk crate full of clothes. I want to wear one of the dresses. I am told it's not allowed because I'm a boy. It is 2005. I am 6 years old. I make friends with a girl in my class. She is my best friend and we are together every day. One day she says she can't be my friend anymore because I am a boy and boys are gross and I'm weird. I don't want to be friends with any of the boys. They all bully me and hit me and pin me to the ground. But that's ok because that's just how boys play. I have no friends anymore. It is 2006. I am 7 years old. I stare at a woman in an advertisement in one of my mom's magazine. She is beautiful. I want to grow up to look like her. I realize I will not grow up to look like her and will instead grow up to look like my father. The thought fills me with fear. I go up to my room and cry. I draw a picture of myself as a girl. I go to sleep praying that I will wake up as a girl named Sarah, and that my life as a boy will slowly fade from my mind. I try to kill myself through strangulation in the school bathroom. I obviously fail but my attempt on my life is discovered anyway. My parents are furious that I would be so selfish. It is 2009. I am 10 years old. I have one friend. He hits me and calls me a faggot but he is nicer than any other boys at school. I am over at his house. His mother speaks on the phone about a gay man they knew who got something called a "sex change". I do not know what this means but it piques my interest. I desperately want to know more, but I know that it's taboo and wrong.

It is 2011. I am 12 years old. I discover what "transgender" means. I spend hours on the computer, looking at websites about Male to Female Transsexuals. I treat the transsexual roadmap like a bible. I want to transition right away. I tell my school counselor. She is supportive, but implores me to consider simply being a gay male crossdresser like her son. I do not want that. I want to be a girl. I tell my parents. They tell me I have been brainwashed. That I will never be allowed to transition and that if they catch me looking at websites about the matter I will be punished. It is 2012. I am 13 years old. A year of constant begging and pleading has convinced my parents to take me to a gender specialist. I think I will finally get puberty blockers, or maybe even estrogen. I am interrogated for hours by an adult about my sexuality, sexual desires, and whether or not I like women's clothing. I like boys and girls, which I tell her, but I do not have much in the way of sexual desires, because I am 13. She takes this as deceit. At one point she touches between my legs and rubs my genitals through my pants. I do not want this. But I will endure it for the privilege of being allowed to transition. In the end she tells me there is no way I can be trans, because I am attracted to girls and interested in anime, which is a "male interest". It is 2013. I am 14 years old. Every day I roleplay in chatrooms with strangers. I do not want them to be sexual but they quickly take on a sexual nature at the insistence of my rp partners. I have been doing this for a year now. This is the only place I can be a girl. I exchange skype info with a few of these people and begin chatting regularly. A man in his late 20s asks me to be his girlfriend. I accept. At least he sees me as a girl. It is 2014. I am 15 years old. I have begun growing scraggly hair all over my neck. I have been in a daze for weeks. I cannot focus. I feel detached from my body. I am like a zombie. My dad takes me into the bathroom and shows me how to shave. He pats me on the back and tells me I am a man now. I go into my bedroom and cry. Later on my parents discover the roleplaying and my boyfriend. My ipod and my laptop are confiscated and the door is taken off my bedroom. I am placed under strict monitoring and supervision. I try to kill myself. I wake up alive in a hospital bed. I am taken to a large building where I sleep on a cot and am watched by doctors. I don't remember a lot from this time period. I went home and watched evangelion for the first time.

It is 2016. I am 17 years old. The door is put back on my bedroom. I am given back my iPod and am allowed to take my laptop into my bedroom by myself. I stay inside every day watching pirated anime because it lets me forget about reality. It is 2018. I am 19 years old. I get my first smartphone and immediately download grindr. I hook up with strange men who hide me from their wives. Being fucked by them is the closest I get to feeling like a girl. I find out about a student at my community college who sells a variety of sedative pills. It is 2019. I am 20 years old. I am spending all my money on xanax, percocets, oxycotin and similar pills. I take them more and more often and in higher doses over time. I start coming to class high. I fall asleep in the hallways from time to time. This is the only way I can numb the constant ambient pain caused by my unaddressed gender dysphoria. It is 2020. I am 21 years old. The whole world is locked down. I am forced to stop taking pills and replace it with copious amounts of weed, which is now legal. I am no longer in school. I am high all the time. I can't sleep at night. I want to be a girl so badly. It is 2021. I am 22 years old. I will start school again in September. I have started hormone replacement therapy, but I know it is too late for me. My body is mangled beyond repair by years of drugs. I have taken to excessive caloric restrictions in order to lose weight. The hormones don't do much, but they help me sleep better. I am sober now. It is 2024. I am about to turn 25 in a month. I see an article headlined: "my trans kid experienced a joyful, anxiety-free girlhod - all thanks to puberty blockers". I want to cry but the tears won't come. I know that should have been me. But it wasn't. I will never be a girl. I will never be a woman. I will never be happy.

So I’ve been meaning to post more images of my OCs, as I’ve made them in The Sims 4. So under the cut here is exactly that, sans the majority of my vampire OCs and a couple of others that I don’t write about or RP that often. Their names and a little info about them are above their pictures. :3

Myarel, aka my first ever OC. My grouchy demon boy. Has 5 siblings and a ton of cousins. His adoptive parent is his wife’s grandmother, Rowan. Externally grumpy, internally sweet. He and his siblings are Shadow demons.

Colton, a shy cyborg cutie. Is dating Myarel’s youngest sister Keida. Doesn’t like talking about his dad all that much. His right arm from the elbow down and his legs from his knees to about the soles of his feet are metal. His right eye has a small red dot in the pupil that grows when he experiences negative emotions.

Lyn, a blind, polyamorous Southern gentleman. Flirty and independent, and will whack you with his cane if you do something he doesn’t like. Lives with his three lovers on his farm. His father was a fairy, and his mother was a Shadow Demon. He has wings, but rarely exposes them, and can do a bit of magic.

Isaac, a gay former pirate. Prankster, makes stupid jokes, and can often be irritating, but still a sweetie. Adores his boyfriend. Helps Lyn out on his farm, and still loves the sea, though the land will be his home from now on.

Vi, a vampiress. Myarel’s wife and mother of their triplets. Is often told she looks like her grandmother. Adores her family, and acts as an older sister to her younger cousins.

Rose, Vi and Myarel’s daughter. A total Daddy’s girl, and the oldest of the triplets. (She and her siblings are shown here as teenagers, around 14.)

Viktor, Vi and Myarel’s son. Very close to his mom, and the youngest of the triplets.

Axel, Vi and Myarel’s son. As the middle child, he loves to mess with his siblings and parents alike, but he’s still sweet.

Dormir, one of Lyn’s lovers. A vampire who was born with double fangs, giving him a slight lisp. Is protective of his little sister.

Estrella, a mermaid. She’s engaged to Tiburón, and is another of Lyn’s lovers, as well as the mother of the quartet’s children.

Tiburón, a merman. Engaged to Estrella since they were young. Is mute, and speaks through sign language.

Aria, a young vampire, shown here as a teenager. Dormir’s younger sister, and admirer of everything he does.

Esteban, Estrella and Tiburón’s son. Oldest of his siblings, protective over them and Aria alike. (He and his siblings are shown as teenagers here.)

Angelita, daughter of Dormir and Estrella. The middle child of her siblings, she adores all of her parents, and especially adores her aunt Aria, who is more like a sister to her.

Cristobal, son of Estrella and Lyn. Shares his father’s eye color, but not his blindness. The youngest of his siblings, very close to his father.

Erika, Isaac’s older sister. Is kind of a social media celebrity, but she doesn’t care about fame as much as she cares about her brother and father.

Xalia, Myarel’s oldest sister. Likes bright colors, and is sometimes snappy, but cares more about her siblings than anything else.

Zukari, the middle child in Myarel’s family. Quiet, kind of shy, and bad at talking to people. More open around his family than around strangers.

Keida, Colton’s girlfriend and one of the two second-youngest kids in her family. She and Kikaru are twins. She’s more confident than both her brother and her boyfriend and makes them be social.

Kikaru, Keida’s twin and one of the second-youngest kids in his family. Doesn’t enjoy being social, but as he and his sister are usually together, he’s better than he used to be.

Zexion, the youngest child of Myarel’s family. Prefers spending time birdwatching rather than making friends, but is always joined by someone else in his room eventually.

Hexxian, Myarel’s oldest cousin. His nickname is Hexx. He was one of a set of quadruplets, but his sisters died in utero. The spirits of his sisters matured with him, and he’s always had their guidance. Married to Opal. His mother is a Shadow Demon, and his father is a warlock.

Opal, a rare Prism fairy, Hexx’s wife, and Lyn’s former guardian. Kind-hearted and soft-spoken, but not as delicate as she seems. Has helped Lyn glamour part of his farm so he can keep magical creatures in it.

Tarja, Myarel’s cousin. The oldest of her siblings. In the band she and her brothers made together, she plays bass and provides vocals. Genderfluid, mostly presents as female and accepts he/she/they pronouns. As a shapeshifter, she can take any form she wishes, though her eyes stay the same. She and her brothers are Shadow demons.

Xandon, nicknamed Xan. Oldest of Tarja’s brothers. Quiet and bookish. Plays piano and synthesizer for his family’s band.

Nexxan, nicknamed Nexx. The middle child in his family. Hyperactive, funny, and always full of energy. Plays drums in his family’s band.

Vixaine, nicknamed Vix. Second-youngest in his family. Unlucky in love, but believes he’ll find the one someday. Provides lead vocals in his family’s band, and can also play guitar.

Mizane, nicknamed Zane. The youngest in his family. Shy, sensitive, and very attached to his sister. Very rarely sings, but he can. Taught himself to play guitar, and plays it in his family’s band.

Draiman, Myarel’s cousin. Goofy and outgoing, always looking for ways to bug Myarel, but genuinely cares about him. Oldest of his siblings, first to move out of his family’s home. He and his siblings are Shadow demon/ Water demon hybrids.

Liberty, Draiman’s oldest sister and second-oldest in her family. Independent and always creating her own fashion trends. Can’t wait to move out.

Quill, Draiman’s brother. A bit lazy, but mostly just laid-back. Doesn’t worry about anything, even school, but still gets good grades.

Ingrid, Draiman’s youngest sister. Optimistic and outgoing, and always looking forward to tomorrow.

Rowan, a vampiress. Adoptive mother of Colton and Myarel, grandmother of Violet, and great-grandmother to Vi and Myarel’s triplets. She considers herself the mother of anyone who needs one. Youngest of her 12 siblings, and one of the two who survived. Kind and cares for her family.

Everett, aka my self-insert. Isaac’s boyfriend and Rowan’s grandson. Transgender and gay. Is the only one who can successfully play pranks on Isaac without him suspecting anything. Outgoing and always looks out for his twin brother. He and his brother are half vampire and half shapeshifter, and he can shapeshift into a white Cheetah.

Ethan, Everett’s twin and Xan’s boyfriend. Quiet, shy, and mostly scared of new people, but his brother drags him along when he feels he needs to meet people. Despite his shyness, he’s still sweet as can be. Can only shapeshift halfway into a white Cheetah, meaning he has all the characteristics of the Cheetah, but not the body.

Hickory, a shapeshifter that can turn into a Barn Owl, shown here in human form. Is often Rowan’s companion, though she doesn’t know he’s a shapeshifter and thinks he’s a normal owl. Is around 15 years old in human form. Knows he’ll have to come clean to Rowan eventually.

Jolene, nicknamed Buttercup. A Fire demon/succubus hybrid who abstains from using her seduction. Wears her mask to hide facial scars. Zukari is her boyfriend, and she loves him dearly. Also loves her two adopted siblings, Ren and Selene. Mistrustful of most people, but can come around eventually.

Selene, nicknamed Twitch. A Lightning demon/succubus hybrid who hasn’t used her seduction once in her life-- she’s terrible at it, it turns out. Nexx is her boyfriend, the only one who can keep up with her motormouth. Loves making new friends, very hyperactive.

Ren, nicknamed River. A Water demon/incubus hybrid, great at seduction but more content to make friends the normal way. Doesn’t talk much, but is willing to make friends. Despite being the same age as his sisters, he’s extremely protective over them.

Chris, a ghost. Was murdered, though he doesn’t remember who did it. He still has the scars on his chest, but he really isn’t looking for his killer. He’s just happy spending his days with his husband, Paul. Very mischievous, but only toward people he knows.

Paul, a ghost. When he met Chris he was alive, but he won’t disclose his manner of death to anyone, not even his husband. Is a DJ, and is super friendly despite his tendency to scare people who are unprepared.

Dementia, a Mist demon. She feels a connection to Myarel, though why she feels it is unknown. Has grown close to Erin, helping calm him down when his temper flares and coaxing him out of his dragon form. Hopes to be able to approach Myarel someday, but for now is content helping Erin.

Journey, aka my newest OC. A deer-inspired ball-jointed doll given life by Erin. Is quiet as she doesn’t know how to speak yet, but is also very stubborn. Assists Erin and Dementia when she can, but is independent and longs to explore the world.

Politics in Fiction

Often, I see various arguments about politics in fiction (this most often happens specifically around video games for some reason). These arguments are rarely satisfying to me because I feel like I both agree and disagree with both sides at once.

One side says that some fiction has always been political, which is true but also not really what the other side is complaining about.

The other side is also prone to making many claims I do not agree with, like that including minority characters is always political pandering.

So there are actually many points I want to address on this topic and I hope I can separate them into readable chunks properly.

It is fine for fiction to be political

I do not dispute that many fictional works have political messages and themes. I also don’t think that this is inherently a bad thing.

The better Fallout games are political, for example. They often focus on the affairs of various societies and how they are (or should be) managed or governed, and their world is richer and more interesting for it. 

The central choice in Fallout New Vegas is basically about which faction should control the city and its nearby dam, which results in various different policies and consequences.

Political fiction can be good, it can help develop a setting or provide meaningful and memorable decisions.

However, as with all fiction, it has to be smart and nuanced about it. I will explain more below.

Sometimes things are not actually that political

One claim I have heard is that Star Wars is about “resisting fascism”. I don’t entirely see that in the movies as I remember them (though it might be more apparent in expanded universe stuff).

The bad guys in Star Wars are an authoritarian empire, yes, but at least in the movies themselves there doesn’t seem to be anything uniquely fascist about them, and not much is said about their ideology or policies in the movies either. They feel like a generic evil empire.

I know it has been long since I watched the movies, but I never really understood what the emperor’s motivations were beyond just personal power. Why did he want personal power? I don’t know. He barely feels like a real character.

And on top of that, Star Wars does not actually discuss or criticize fascism or even authoritarianism as an idea all that much. It’s just bad guys to fight in a way that feels superficial to me.

While on this topic, not all deep themes are political in nature. I know some people believe the personal is political, I don’t (for reasons I may explain in a different post). Sometimes I see works that deal with personal issues but that are treated as dealing with political ones, they are not the same thing to me.

I feel like people on both sides do this, too.

For example, there was a recent controversy about how Bloodlines 2 will let players choose their pronouns and how this was "too political” or “pandering to SJWs”.

Some people seem to just treat the very existence of LGBT characters in fiction as a political move, but to me they are just characters. 

Everyone in my Dungeons and Dragons settings (except the player characters, if they wish) is either bisexual or asexual, not because I am trying to make any kind of statement but because those are the states that are easiest for me to imagine and work with.

Sometimes the politics are not what you think they are

Because everyone has different views and experiences, people can look at the same story from a different perspective and take an entirely different message from it.

It is fine if your interpretation is uncommon, it is even fine if your interpretation is different from what the author intended.

But you should keep in mind that your reading is not the only valid one.

I most often see people on the left do this. They will claim that a piece of media is leftist, and often there may be some valid argument for why it may be, but then treat their interpretation as fact and try to shame and attack others for thinking differently without ever considering why they might have read the story differently.

For example, during the backlash to the backlash surrounding Bloodlines 2, I saw people asserting as fact that vampires are an allegory for the upper classes being parasites and therefore the people complaining are not welcome.

That did not seem right to me. All kinds of people write vampire stories and intend different meanings for them, there isn’t a universal to work with (not even when it comes to the physical powers and traits the vampires have).

Sometimes vampires are meant to represent corrupting yet irresistible sexual predators.

Sometimes they are meant to represent disease.

Sometimes they are just hot but troubled supernatural boyfriends.

Bram Stoker himself was a monarchist, and the vampires in the VTM setting are not all wealthy either. Some of them even live in the sewers and look too monstrous to be around humans. Not everyone is a Ventrue and not all Ventrue are bad, especially by the standards of the setting.

It is possible to do politics so badly that it ruins everything

I think there may be another reason why certain people may not notice that their favorite media deals with social issues and politics: That sort of thing is much more noticeable when it is done very poorly, which further convinces those people that adding politics to media is bad.

At some point social issues can stop being interesting worldbuilding or philosophical dilemmas and just become a ham-fisted allegory for a current real world issue that just hits one side on the face with an opinion they may not agree with.

For example, remember when Deus Ex: Mankind Divided pissed absolutely everyone off with that “Augs Live Matters” sign?

This has been said before, but good political stuff is vague and timeless: It deals with general principles that can be applied in multiple contexts. For example, 1984 was about extreme authoritarianism but not any one authoritarian group.

When fiction follows current issues/movements/political labels too closely, it risks being reduced to being about that specific issue instead of the things that lie underneath it.

On top of this, a lot of fiction that is deliberately aimed at being political is just badly written in that it tries to tell you how to think instead of letting you think. It is like those political cartoons that label everything and that have messages that can be summarized as “my side is correct and my enemies are dumb and evil” but do not actually tell you why that is.

I don’t like political cartoons even when I agree with them. They do not inspire deep consideration or persuade people, they just give the groups that already agreed with the message some short-term pleasure at how much better than their opponents they are.

People want interesting fiction that allows them to explore issues and come to their own conclusions. They don’t want propaganda that treats them with contempt and won’t change their minds.

If you want to see what extremely bad political fiction looks like, just check out that dying TERF webcomic known as Sinfest. In the webcomic, transgender people are portrayed as literal misogyny zombies and children are sent to “gender camps” to be forced to take hormones and re-educated.

The social metaphors in Sinfest are detached from reality yet so heavy-handed that they probably need cranes to lift their hands high enough to masturbate, and masturbate is all the author does in the comic.

If your primary aim is to make propaganda rather than to make interesting, thoughtful, and heartfelt stories then you will most likely make very bad fiction. We can see that happening here.

In my opinion, the best stories are personal or deal with timeless questions or core principles rather than just repeating current talking points or moralizing.

(The other day I had a similar experience looking up lesbian/bi claire redfield on this hellsite and someone wrote that Claire is a lesbian -- big big yes -- but added in the tags that “Leon is a trans bi guy!”)

Why not get into it a bit while I’m overcaffeinated?

👉 Leon and Ada is ... weird and people can read weird, bad things into it especialllllllllly if you consider “yellow fever” but it can also be smth super cute where a bi guy and a really cool girl he meets allows him to survive the events of RE 2 (1998) because she is literally mourning the death of her boyfriend in Umbrella. I think that Capcom unbeknownst to their demonic loudmouth staff have created some really thoughtful chances for representation and that helped them get so big--so Ada and Leon are good

But like...

Claire is right there! Leon and Claire become friends like that and tbh they make my bisexual heart melt as individuals. As a couple I feel hope imagining the ways they’d buck the trend of alienation and the threat of abuse...I feel like I care nothing for the fandoms, the creators, and even a majority of the games’ plot points, but here Leon and Claire are, making me feel so much pride because they show that there’s a way for men and women to be ... healthy while in love. They’re the couple that’d be great peer parents (Shirley is a big part of their game they’re protagonists of, and I love how she is written both in 1998 and 2019 which parallels how Moira Burton is written--and completely diverges from the tragedy of the pigeonholey writing of Ashley Graham) and then while they’re wonderful supports to Shirley and are intimately “””together””” in many aspects of life I believe that they’re the type to not even date because the intimate devotion and protection or sticktoitiveness of a friendship ends up building first, because it matters more. Which is not to say that when they do get into a relationship it’s anything but one that is rare.

It was about damn time I wrote something involving Robbie, even if just a small thing like this. I’ve also been meaning to involve Jackie’s dysphoria more in my stuff for ages now

One of those Really Defining moments in Jackie and Robbie's friendship happens on one of those days when Jackie's dysphoria just gets really really bad. Like, it's already been bad right from the start of the day and he's been just sitting around in a giant hoodie ever since he's gotten back from doing his superhero stuff because he can't wear his binder all the time sadly. And it kinda takes the kick out of saving people's day and then picking up groceries for you and your boyfriend if at the store you overhear some asshole talking about "those damn transgenders". So he's just sitting there, on his own because this feels like such a stupid problem, definitely not worth bothering anyone over, and he's crying a little bit, because everything just feels so shitty and he wants it to stop.

And that's how Robbie finds him, absolutely miserable, and greets him with a loud and enthusiastic "Jee!". But Jackie barely even moves to look at him and it's so obvious that he's Not Okay and probably doesn't feel like playing guessing games with Robbie either. Robbie is a really damn empathetic creature and he immediately places himself next to Jackie and keeps asking him what's wrong and poking him until he properly looks at him, because signing is much easier for him than talking.

"Nothing's wrong, Robbie," Jackie forces a smile, but he cringes at how weak and shaky his voice sounds. Not manly at all. "Please just go play with someone else now, okay?"

Robbie signs back "not okay" immediately, looking very stern. Jackie can't just lie to him like that, he knows something is not right and he wants to help. But Jackie turns his head away, forced smile melting from his face, which causes Robbie to grab his shoulder, begging for his attention. His friend is hurt, why can't he help?

"Wrong?! Jee!" he exclaims, some incredibly condensed version of "What's wrong? Are you okay? I'm worried about you!" but it gets the point across.

Jackie offers him another weak smile, because what else can he do? Robbie is so sweet, he's only trying to help, even if he doesn't get why Jackie doesn't want any company right now. Part of him does want to explain this to Robbie, but he has no idea how. How do you explain gender identity and dysphoria and transphobes to a well-meaning zombie? It's not that Robbie wouldn't understand if given the time, but...Jackie doesn't really have the capacity for that whole talk right now. For all Robbie knows, Jackie is just like all other guy egos.

"Sorry, buddy, I just..." he sighs and runs a hand through his hair. Robbie listens to him carefully, but when he sees that Jackie doesn't exactly know how to continue, he signs "I love you". It's a sign he's been using a lot ever since he's learned it, in any sort of situation where he wants to comfort somebody. He thinks it's a nice thing to tell people when they're feeling down. Jackie sighs again. "Some people...they think I'm not a real boy and it...it hurts."

Robbie recoils with his eyes wide, and before Jackie can think to stop him, he lets out an angry, high-pitched screech. Jackie tries to shush him, but he's too upset to listen.

"Jee real boy!" Robbie all but shouts, because he's too worked up to sign. "Fight bad people!"

Jackie catches Robbie's arms before he can jump up, probably to fulfil that promise of fighting the bad people. He laughs a little, though he feels like crying with joy, because this precious zombie who still only knows so little about the world is so convinced that he's a real boy and is willing to fight over it.

"Now, now, there's...there's no need for that."

Robbie settles again, but still looks at him pointedly. "Real boy."

He still looks absolutely scandalised that Jackie would ever think he's not a real boy, that other people would ever want to make Jackie feel like he's not a real boy.

"Thanks, bud," Jackie smiles, and he keeps ahold of one of Robbie's arms, just to be safe. He doesn't want to repeat that not everyone agrees with them on that. Robbie doesn't need to know about all that.

Robbie, who is, mind you, not at all a fan of physical contact, opens his arms tentatively for a hug. Hugs are things of comfort, they help his friends feel better, and now Jackie definitely needs a comfort thing to help him feel better. Jackie accepts the hug gratefully, squeezing Robbie carefully to his chest, and Robbie pats his back affectionately. Pats are a really affectionate thing to him.

"Marr?" Robbie asks with his chin propped up on Jackie's shoulder.

Jackie chuckles fondly. "No, I don't want to bother him with something like this."

Robbie immediately pushes back and stares at him like he's just said something horribly stupid. "Marr help."

Jackie can't catch him in time before he jumps up and takes off towards wherever Marvin might be. Jackie tries to yell after him and call him back, tell him that there's no reason to bother Marvin with something so unimportant, but he only gets a very determined "Marr!" in response.

Within minutes Robbie returns, pulling a very confused Marvin by the hand and looking very happy with himself. Marvin sits down next to Jackie, worried.

"Jackie? What's wrong?" he asks quietly, rubbing gently at Jackie's shoulder. His eyes flicker up to Robbie, who's standing around with a very proud expression on his face, then right back to Jackie. "Robbie just came to me chanting that you're a real boy, which of course you are, but what happened?"

Jackie shakes his head. "Just...a shit day. Nothing much," he hopes Marvin will be satisfied with that much, but at the same time he knows he won't be. Marvin is a very stubbornly loving person. "Dysphoria, that's all. Nothing important, I didn't want to bother you with it."

"Nothing that makes you feel like shit is unimportant," Marvin says, gently drawing Jackie against his chest, and Jackie doesn't resist. Then he kisses the top of his head, murmuring endearment in languages Jackie doesn't understand.

Robbie watches them quietly. They're happy, so he's happy. Jackie looks up at him from where his head is laid on Marvin's chest, and he sings "thank you". In Marvin's arms, listening to him telling him that he's wonderful and handsome in a dozen different languages, he can forget about how shitty the world around him is just for a moment.

Robbie grins widely, and then runs off again. He's going to find someone else to play with. But he's happy, because he made his friend feel better, and it's his favourite kind of happiness.

Hospital visits, what for?: Broken arm casts at 6 and 18, recent surgery, recovery and physiotherapy.

Why are they no longer working as it?: All of the jobs appeared to be short lived. They were only to fill the year between high school and college and enable him to start to be financially self sufficient.

Do they enjoy their current occupation?: As a student, Kenton loves his major. 

Why do they do it?: In hopes to one day get his masters after his degree and become a professor. He wants to make his students as passionate about the applications of math in the natural world as his father made him. He also just really likes the idea of being Dr. Kenton.

How did they end up in their current occupation?: Applied to Princeton and was taken under deferred entry.

What can you find in their pockets/wallet: Normally his headphones, his phone, a couple of dollars here and there for coffee. And a pen with an assorted amount of scrawled notes. His wallet is pretty standard, but he keeps a picture of his family in there.

Place(s) your character can always be found: His dorm, outside on a bench, in the woods and at any coffee shop.

When does your character like to wake up?: No later than 10:30. He hates getting up before 8, but he’s had to sacrifice it in the past.

What’s your character’s morning routine?: He wakes up, stretches and scrolls through his phone for a couple of minutes. He turns off his alarm and makes sure there aren’t any important texts or e-mails he hasn’t replied to. He eats breakfast first, because he’s always too hungry in the morning to shower first, and then he showers, gets dressed and does what he has to do that day. 

What does your character wear to bed?: He just wears his boxers or a pair of sweats when it’s warm and a t-shirt if it’s cold. He’s a pretty big advocate of sleeping shirtless.

If your character can’t fall asleep, what are they thinking about?: Anything that’s making him anxious or excited, or his family. Lennox. 

On what occasions do they lie?: He lies when he feels like he doesn’t want the other person to know too much about him.
