Hi Shana!
Do you watch any Korean dramas? You pulled me into several fandoms so I generally trust your taste in TV.
I've been trying to learn Korean, but Duolingo only has like four voices and I'm at the point where it's been recommended that I start watching kdramas.
I'm not far along enough to understand anything they'll be saying, but subtitle translation exists and it would be nice to get used to the sound of the language spoken by actual speakers.
I don't trust my own ability to find a kdrama I'd like, on account of every TV show I've gone hmm I wonder if I'll like that? I've hated.
Do you have any recommendations?
i love kdramas!
my favorite is absolutely hands down mr. queen. that show was made in a lab for meeee. gender fuckery, politics, identity porn my beloved. really fantastically written women. just wonderful
goblin was the first kdrama that really pulled me in. really wonderful fantastic characters who all have such great chemistry with one another. really hilarious when it's not breaking your heart. also once again identity porn my beloved
crash landing into you is very good but you've gotta just. disassociate from the north korea of it all. and accept that the north korea of it all makes it so stunningly unrealistic, even for a kdrama (in my personal opinion). but the main couple has incredible chemistry and the support cast is hilarious
hotel del luna is also a fave but it's pushed forward almost entirely by the amazing presence and acting of chemistry of IU alone. not that the rest of the cast isn't good and interesting, it's just that she's such a standout and really what makes it worth watching. i love a complicated woman
under the queen's umbrella is famously historically inaccurate (the whole premise of the plot makes no sense and would never happen) but it's really sweet, well acted, and! had such a wonderful and compassionate depiction of a trans woman struggling to be herself in old timey korea, which was pleasant surprise
kingom is a very good, well plotted zombie show. phenomenal acting, great story, but not enough in the way of interpersonal relationships in my personal opinion
business proposal is a classic, cute take on a trope done a million times but done very well. great chemistry, so cute, probably the one out of all my recs that's really just cute fluff. the side couple is also really cute with great chemistry, enough that you're rooting for them just as much as the main, which rarely happens. also, again, identity porn my beloved

Jericca: Never support you…. groaning in anger; snapping UGH! THAT’S IT! EVERYBODY OUT!
But then, without thinking, in a fit of anger, Jerrica sling her coffee mug towards human Yumyulack, where it flew burning coffee all over him as he screams in pain.
Jerrica: Oh my god! I am so sorry! Let me-
Human Yumyulack, finally reaching his breaking point with Jerrica, her sisters and Rio, screams in fury that is hear throughout town. Human Korvo hears it and gasp as he hid and began to overhear the conversation
Human Korvo: Hmmm?
Kim: Um Baxter… are you okay…
Human Yumyulack starts yelling
Human Yumyulack: UGH! THAT’S IT! I HAVE HAD IT! I HAVE FUCKING HAD IT! to Jerrica YOU HAVE TURN INTO A HUGE PINK HAIR JERK WHO BARLEY PAY ANY ATTENTION TO ME! to Rio YOU ARE NOTHING OUT A PUNK AND SELF-CENTERED JERKFACE WHO NEED TO STOP LOSING HIS TEMPER OVER LIGHT PROBLEMS! to Kim YOU NEED TO STOP BEING BRATTY BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOUR MEAN BITCH-ASS SISTER ALWAYS SUPPORT YOU! to Ash and Shana AND YOU TWO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELVES!
Human Korvo gasps.
Human Korvo: whispering Y-Yumyulack?
Kim: But Baxter, we-
Human Baxter: YOU RUINED EVERYTHING! UGH! I WORKED SO HARD ON THIS WITH YOU GUYS JUST FOR MY DAD KOREY’S HARD WORK! BUT INSTEAD, YOU TURN IT A RIDICULOUS BATTLE OF THE BLOCK PARTIES WITH THREE BRATS YOU ALWAYS HATE! YOU EVEN RUINED SOME OF THE STUFF KOREY WANTED THAT HE WORKED SO HARD ON TO PERFECT THIS PARTY! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULTS!
Human Korvo starts crying.
Human Korvo: crying Oh… oh my God… I didn’t know… I… sniffs
Jerrica: But you don’t understand! We have to beat the Misfits-
Human Yumyulack angrily slams the desk so hard with his fist, it falls apart into pieces, surprisingly.
Rio: Holy shit! Did you just-
Mark walks by and gasp as he hears his boyfriend quietly.
Human Yumyulack: NO! WE HAVE TO MAKE THIS BLOCK PARTY KOREY WORKED SO HARD ON! AND NOW BECAUSE OF YOU GUYS, THE STUFF IS RUINED, I MESSED UP THINGS WITH MY SISTERS AND NOW THEY ARE REALLY MAD AT ME AND YOU GUYS BEEN TREATING ME LIKE SHIT!
Jerrica: Baxter…
Human Yumyulack: BECAUSE, THAT’S IT! THAT’S THE LAST STRAW! I QUIT!
Suddenly, Human Yumyulack’s eyes glow purple and his fingertips starts turning black. Human Korvo gasps.
Human Korvo: No no no no no! YUMYULACK!
Jerrica: Baxter, wait! We-
Human Yumyulack: FUCK YOU, YOU SELF-CENTERED BITCH-CUNTS!
Human Korvo: What is he doing?!
Once Human Yumyulack slammed the door at Jerrica and her friends faces, he angrily walks off when suddenly purple wings pop out of his backs, which caused Human Korvo to gasp as Mark follows Human Yumyulack.
Human Korvo: Mark, no!
As Human Yumyulack keeps walking, he feels a sharp pain and in his head as he turns back into his Shlorpian form and cries out in pain. Then, Yumyulack starts growing bigger and muscular while his whole skin turns black as he cries out.
Yumyulack: WHAT’S HAPPENING TO ME?!
Mark: Babe?! Babe! Are you alright- gasp
Yumyulack: clothes rip apart into pieces while he screams in pain MARK! GET AWAY! begins to cry RUN! BEFORE I ACCIDENTALLY HURT YOU! breaks down sobbing as he finishes growing bigger and muscular while horns pop out of his head
Mark: Holy shit!
As Yumyulack’s teeth becomes sharp and monstrous with monstrous fangs and his voice gets deeper, he has fully become a Super Shlorpian as he roars once Human Korvo arrived and recognized Yumyulack in distraught.
Human Korvo: Yumyulack?!
Super Shlorpian Yumyulack, who lost his sanity, roars and swings a car as Mark gasp and hides behind Human Korvo, while controlling his mutant zombie form. Human Yumyulack roars as he lifts a car up.
Human Korvo: Yumyulack! No! It’s me Korvo! Your dad! Put the car down kiddo! We have to get you home before-
Mark: Yumyulack! No!
Super Shlorpian Yumyulack throws the car while Human Korvo and Mark dodges it. Suddenly, Super Shlorpian Yumyulack hears the screeching from the bat mutants and roars as he flies off.
Human Korvo: Oh for God’s sake!
Mark: Yumyulack! Yumyulack….
Human Korvo looks on and knows what he must do, while going papa wolf.
Human Korvo: Mark, stay here.
Mark: Wait, what are you-
Human Korvo turns back to his Shlorpian form and began to grow bigger and muscular while his wings and horns pop out and his skin turns black
Mark: Whoa! Dude!
Korvo: rips apart this robe as he finishes growing bigger and muscular while his voice deepens Ooooohhhh ffffuuuucccckkk yyyeeeeeeees!
Korvo moans in pleasure.
Mark: Holy shit! You were the monster that saved me-
Super Shlorpian Korvo roars as he fully completes his transformation. Super Shlorpian Korvo blushes and bites his lip
Super Shlorpian Korvo: Aaaah… stretches his back and flexes his right arm I feel much better and feeling horny right now!
Mark: Woah. You’re ripped!
Super Shlorpian Korvo: Why thank you and- hears Super Shlorpian Yumyulack’s roars
Mark: Babe…
Super Shlorpian Korvo: Stay here.
Mark: Huh? Okay, but be careful dude and good luck!
Super Shlorpian Korvo then roars as he flies off to save his son while going papa wolf.
Super Shlorpian Korvo: HANG ON YUMYULACK! DADDY’S COMING!

W7: Case Research (22) (06/03/23)
This is an extract from another book that Patty wrote.
“The only thing in the world she wanted then,” said Weed, “was to have two kids, a collie, and a station wagon.”
"In the “Tania Interview,” written with SLA members Bill and Emily Harris while hiding from the FBI, Patty compared her transformation to the development of a photograph"
Anyone’s Daughter, journalist Shana Alexander’s account of the trial, regularly comments on Patty’s pasty, gray, “fish’s belly” complexion, notes her “copybook plain” handwriting (“as controlled and uninflected as her voice”), and summarizes the court-ordered report on Patty’s mental state as describing “a person of åflat affect’ and shallow mind,” unusually “concerned with proper hostesslike behavior,” a person “living only in the moment, without past or future.” The word “zombie” appears frequently in Alexander’s account: Patty is “looking totally zombielike once more”; Wendy Yoshimura, her roommate during her year as a fugitive, “saw her as almost a zombie: depressed, withdrawn, subservient”; Dr. Margaret Thaler Singer, one of several court-appointed psychiatrists, labeled the Patty Hearst she observed in October 1975 as “a low-IQ, low-affect zombie”; and a juror later described his confusion in trying to square Patty’s dynamic public image with her colorless courtroom visage, “one of them animated, one a zombie.”
A darker, more threatening explanation for Patty’s conduct surfaced frequently during the trial, although, in the end, it did not carry the day. Perhaps the SLA’s treatment of Patty—the violent kidnapping, the sexual abuse, the constant threats, the program of indoctrination—had changed something inside her, made her compliant, willing to do anything. Reduced to this state, she resembled others who had been “broken” by their captors and made to do and say things contrary to conscience and character: pilots captured during the Korean War, concentration camp prisoners, and Jozsef Cardinal Mindszenty, a Hungarian prelate who in 1948 penned a “confession” after thirty-nine days of abuse in a Communist prison. In this scenario, Patty hadn’t chosen anything, except, perhaps, to stay alive; rather, she was the helpless victim of a powerful new system of mental and physical manipulation.
Was Patty a victim, of duress or fear or what the defense labeled “coercive persuasion,” or had she taken up with the SLA willingly, decided to be a different person, chosen a new life? Did Patty’s engagement with the SLA have a historical or social cause (the “sixties” and growing “permissiveness” were among the favorites), or was her interior life—that is, her “free will”—sufficient to explain her conduct? If Patty had in some sense been taken over, if she had been brainwashed, turned into a zombie, converted under duress, or otherwise deprived of free will and full consciousness, were other, ordinary Americans, regardless of race, class, gender, and circumstance, just as vulnerable? Should they understand themselves, deep down, as potential victims or as free agents?
At one level these questions were about Patty, about her personality, her identity, and her social being. At another, more fundamental level, they probed the qualities and dimensions of what social scientists called, in the 1950s, the “American character” and, in the 1970s, “human nature.” They were also, in the broadest sense, political questions, questions asked of Patty Hearst concerning what had happened to her, but also pertinent to a variety of issues that lay just beneath the surface (and sometimes breached the surface) of everyday affairs—among them the meaning of the 1960s, standards of criminal responsibility, the role of women, and the idea of the welfare state.
This post has a lot of good summaries of the case and its importance which I can use

I’d also want to request them to have a what-if stamp/watermark. To make them identifyable as What-ifs. Maybe even some lands with the Godzilla treatment (sea instead of island for example)
Has there ever been discussion of a set for alternate story timelines, like Planar Chaos but for the story instead of the mechanics? Like what if Gix had corrupted Urza instead of Mishra, what if Ugin didn't help imprison the Eldrazi and Sorin and Nahiri tried to kill them instead, what if the Blackblade actually was able to kill Bolas during War of the Spark, etc.?
It's a frequent ask on Blogatog. What "what if" scenario would you most like to see on a card?

Shakugan no Shana is My Favorite Anime I Recommend To No One
Shakugan no Shana is a 2005 anime about a guy who is already dead, so he decides to fight the demons that killed him. The title character, Shana, is a little girl with a big sword and she is really good at killing demons. Together, they kill demons and also have school romance for some reason?
Shana (the character) is one of the Four Tsundere Wonders, the quartet of small girls with big attitudes produced by the voice of Rie Kugimiya in the mid-noughts. The quality of the anime in which they feature varies widely. Toradora! (Taiga, of course) is Perfect In Every Way That Matters (10/10). Zero no Tsukaima (Louise) is a pre-SAO example of the contemporary isekai harem anime and it is also a pioneer in the ways they suck (5/10). I haven't finished Hayate no Gotoku! (Nagi), but I found it to be inoffensive (6/10). Shakugan no Shana is smack in the middle.
Shana is a standard if a bit convoluted secret world protect the mortals setup. While out on the town, male protagonist Yuuji suddenly finds himself to be the only person moving, with everyone else frozen in time. Then he sees demons draining the life force ("power of existence") of those around him, including his crush. Just in time, a girl with a big sword shows up and takes the demon down.
After the action scene, she introduces herself as the "Flaming-Haired, Blazing-Eyed Hunter" and explains that those who the demons consumed are dead, and the shells left behind are "Torches". Torches are essentially placeholders for their presence until their remaining power of existence burns out and the world forgets about them. She is a "Flame Haze", an unaging warrior contracted with a demon to fight them. (Incidentally, this is why she is 200 years old but looks 12.) She then gives him the biggest shock of his un-life: He is also a Torch. Yuuji is already dead, and the entity she is speaking to merely thinks it is him. Surprisingly, the show actually pushes back on that and examines the p-zombie problem in extremely literal terms.
The Torch currently and henceforth known as Yuuji spends a day being crushed by the philosophical and existential questions raised by this whole situation. In the end he challenges the girl on her humanity as well. She doesn't even have a name of her own, just her title. He dubs her Shana after her weapon, the legendary blade Nietono no Shana. He insists that he wants to spend the rest of his limited time protecting others from the fate that befell him. Shana is hesitant to accept Yuuji's help, but after he sacrifices nearly all his remaining power of existence to protect his classmates, she recognizes his determination. As he fades away, midnight tolls - and his power of existence surges back. Yuuji is a strange Torch indeed, and his renewable energy pool makes him a valuable asset as the two work together in earnest.
Wow that was quite the setup for the premise. From here, things settle into a pattern. Shana impersonates Yuuji's evaporated crush so she can attend school with him. Over the course of season 1, a love triangle develops between the two of them and Kazumi Yoshida, a normal human student. Other Flame Hazes come into the picture and a few mortals are drawn across the barrier of the masquerade. There's a good mix of fun action scenes and antagonists ranging from sympathetic to utterly hatable (and sometimes both).
At the end of season 1 we find out what exactly what makes Yuuji such a special Torch. The romance plot also finally comes into focus. Going into season 2, Yuuji moves with great difficulty from support to a more active role. In parallel, the romance plot increases in volume. At the end of the season, the girls give Yuuji an ultimatum - pick one of us. And then....
The first half of season 3 is where Shana goes off the rails. After the cliffhanger twist at the end of season 2, Shana falls into the raised stakes trap of Three Supernatural Threat Levels, moving from a local hero/school romance story into a world-wide supernatural war. A huge number of new characters are introduced so the battles can be bigger in scope and feature more scenery destruction. The fights are still solid in variety, choreography, and creativity, but they're no longer the personal, philosophical conversations of the previous seasons.
All of this is prompted by the biggest and least explained face heel turn I can immediately recall. In Shana, season 3 starts with Yuuji having moved offscreen from "I want to get strong enough to save the world" to "actually I think I will assume the mantle of a dark god and lead an army of demons." We never really understand how that shift happened. (At least Lucas tried to make Anakin have a bad week before he started on the genocide.) All we know is that Yuuji is chaining up love interests in his castle and accepting that his new version of saving the world will have a lot of collateral damage.
After the big mid-season downer, things actually start to look up, both in the plot and in the quality of the writing. The final battle weaves together characters and events from the previous seasons, which makes it all feel more worthwhile in retrospect. Sure, Yuuji is still chaining up love interests and laughing maniacally, but we're getting cool lore and seeing the recurring villains go truly all out. By stationing the final battle in the city where we spent the first two seasons, we feel way more engaged with the stakes than when it was in the middle of nowhere. This is where it shows the good side of the Three Supernatural Threat Levels. The ending isn't perfectly satisfying, but it does wrap things up neatly and doesn't leave you feeling cheated.
Conclusion
So, I clearly have a lot of love for Shakugan no Shana. Why don't I recommend it? Well, that huge whiplash between seasons 2 and 3 is a big factor. There are a number of other plot contrivances I skimmed over. You probably noticed all those Capitalized Words I used - having to learn a bunch of jargon to follow a series can be a barrier to enjoyment for some. While I do enjoy the action, I recognize that it's good rather than great in absolute terms, especially by modern standards. The art is fine but not amazing, and the effects haven't all aged flawlessly. Other than the standout first opening and ending themes of season 3, the music is likewise serviceable but not exceptional.
Shakugan no Shana is good, but it's not great. It's a a 7/10. I won't tell you not to watch it, unlike Spellforce. I just never recommend it to anyone because if you have limited time there are plenty of other, better things to watch. All I want to say is I really like it, and someday I will probably watch it again.
Comparisons
Shakugan no Shana has the deep misfortune of needing to face the Perfect anime Toradora! when it comes to comparing main characters and their arcs. The tsundere archetype is defined by a relationship with a corresponding protagonist, but Shana is also obligated to fulfill the role of action hero. Her relationship with her suitor therefore makes use of the tropes consequent to working together as a team to do violence. The beats of that story, eg. where the weaker character needs to process whether he's a drag rather than a value add, don't always mesh with the necessary beats of a romance. Additionally, the way the romance plot sorta wraps up in season 2 means the tsundere archetype essentially no longer applies to her in season 3. Instead she takes up the mantle of "I know if my love reaches him he can be saved." Delaying the final romantic resolution in order to have an entire war and two climactic battles separates her path from tsuntsun to deredere too far from the reward for that transformation, and her arc is less satisfying as a result. Obviously Toradora! is better.
Dog Days season two and Shana season two both add extra focus on romance compared to their respective first seasons. The notable point of comparison is a conversation between two major love interests around the start of act three where they acknowledge each others’ feelings for the main guy, and agree that they’re not willing to go poly so only one of them can get the guy. Both conversations come to the same conclusion - it’s up to him to make the choice. These conversations are very similar except one bit at the end. In Shana, they present contending for his affections as a competition with a zero-sum result. In Dog Days they prioritize everyone being at least comfortable with the result, making it clear that as they are currently both satisfied with being good friends, changing to romance proper is a desirable but optional upgrade. Shana's increased stakes makes it my preferred example, despite Dog Days scoring higher in general.
Saekano and Shana both struggle somewhat to harmonize their romantic plot with the binding material. They both use the main plot to implement the obligatory will-things-fall-apart twist at the end. In Saekano's case, that twist takes too little time and is a bit unconvincing, and for Shana it takes far too long and distracts from the impact. Overall Saekano does a better job by making the connection between the two plots stronger and keeping their respective tones aligned.
Final Thoughts
It's a bit surprising that I had as much to say about Shana as I do the 9s and 10s, but here we are. No other 7/10 stirs as much passion in me as Shana does, so I doubt any other 7/10 will get this much attention.
#Shana#shakugan no shana#anime#it's still ok not to like the things I like#tsundere#ok but seriously why is this romance/action anime exploring the implications of p-zombies#original post#my favorite

Another redraw and in all honesty, I like my first drawing better. :( Despite not liking how it came out, I thought I’d upload it anyway. I need to get into the habit of uploading more art. This has been a learning experience though. Big hair curls are hard for me to do digitally it seems. Also just because I can make something look more realistic, doesn’t mean it’ll look better. This is definitely a drawing I’ll have to revisit since there are a few things I like about it.

Rookie Girl Groups to Watch in 2022
💕Twitter💕
CSR - CSR is a seven member girl group made up of girls born in 2015 under POPMUSIC entertainment that debuted in July of this year. Their concept is a breath of fresh air and reminiscent of Lovelyz and GFriend! Their debut song is "Pop? Pop!" and features a fresh, age-appropriate concept, which I know I can appreciate. I would recommend that anyone wishing to get into the group check out their video series on 1theK called "The First Judgement." It showcases their personalities and talents really well!
Lapillus - Lapillus is a six member girl group under MLD Entertainment that debuted in June of this year with "Hit Ya!" You might recognize member Shana from Girls Planet 999, and Chanty has become well-known for being the first Filipino-Argentinian Kpop idol! I would personally recommend this performance of "Queendom" for those who don't love their debut title track. Although I don't trust MLD as far as I can throw them, I'm really hoping for the best for these girls.
IRRIS - Anyone who knows me knows that I love IRRIS and I'm doing my best to make everyone else love them too. IRRIS is a four member girl group under JUSTICE RECORDS that debuted with "Wanna Know" in July of this year. Most recently they released a music video for their b-side (and my favorite song of theirs) "Stay With Me" and it seems like they'll be releasing a photo book as well. If you want to know more about them, you can check out my spotlight post. Their Broken Karaoke video is also a great way to see their fun personalities!
H1-KEY - H1-KEY is a four member girl group under Grandline Group that debuted with their song "Athletic Girl" in January of this year. They have a girl crush concept and their debut song is everything sassy that I've been wanting to get from BlackPink but just haven't. Most recently, they came back with their summer track "Run" with a more bright and summery concept that still kept some of the sass and style of their debut. You might recognize member Riina from Produce 48. I would highly recommend following their YouTube channel, where they post content (mostly with English subs!) like their LA Vlog that made me absolutely fall in love with them!
mimiirose - mimiirose is a five member girl group under Yes Im Entertainment that just debuted with their title track "Rose." Currently only the half mv is out, the full mv will be released later but they gave a full performance of "Rose" during their debut showcase, as well as performing their two b-sides "LuLuLu" and "Kill Me More." Member Yoon Jia was a contestant on Girls Planet 999, and maknae Seo Yunju was part of the predebut line-up for bugAboo. I love their debut mini album and I'm looking forward to seeing even more from this group!
ILY:1 - ILY:1 is a six member girl group under FCENM Entertainment that debuted with their title track "Love In Bloom" in April of this year. If you like Oh My Girl, WJSN, fromis_9, or GFriend, then you'll definitely love this group! Most recently, they came back with their song "Que Sera Sera" in July, a perfectly bright and cute summer song. You might recognize members Hana, Ara, Rona, and Ririka from Girls Planet 999. Ririka was also part of Nizi Project season 1. I would recommend that anyone wanting to fall in love with this group watch their interview with ReacttotheK and their pre-debut reality show ILY:0.
CLASS:y - CLASS:y is a seven member girl group that was made and debuted through the show My Teenage Girl. They made their official debut in May of this year with their title track "Shut Down" and then immediately released another mini album with the title track "Classy" a few weeks later. It looks like they have a fun teen crush concept, as their debut music video features them fighting zombies and their music videos feature bright colors. It's pretty easy to learn more about this group since you can watch My Teenage Girl, and they've also appeared on some variety shows like Weekly Idol. Their songs are all really enjoyable, give them a listen!
BeautyBox - BeautyBox is a six member girl group under BY-U Entertainment that made their debut with the song "Rat A Tat" in September of 2021. They are a multi-national group with members from Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. Most recently they made a comeback with the absolute bop "Boggle Boggle" and they released an English version of their debut song "Rat A Tat." They have a ton of content about the members on their YouTube channel, so it's not hard to learn about and fall in love with the members! I really hope everyone will join me in stanning!
ICHILLIN' - ICHILLIN' is a six member girl group under KM Entertainment that debuted in September of 2021 with their title track "GOT'YA." Since then, they have had comebacks with "Play Hide & Seek" and "Fresh," and they are rapidly improving with every comeback. They were originally seven members, but unfortunately, member Sohee recently left the group due to personal reasons. If you would like to learn more about them, they release a lot of covers and content on their YouTube channel. Their music is very fun and full of energy, if you enjoy groups like Weekly, Pristin, or Woo!Ah! I think you'll love this group!
Rocking Doll - Rocking Doll is a four member girl group under SRP Entertainment that debuted with their self titled single "Rocking Doll" in December of 2021. Since then, they've been uploading and releasing music and content nonstop. Most recently, they had a comeback with "Survive." As someone who has been keeping an eye on their journey, it's definitely their best produced song yet. Coming from a small, brand new company, it seems like their CEO is doing her best to promote the girls and I can really appreciate that! They post a lot of different content on their YouTube channel, so that's the best way to get to know the girls. If you like Alexa's concept, you'll definitely like Rocking Doll!
We;Na - We;Na is a four member girl group under SHINE E&M that just debuted with their song "Like Psycho." Unlike the title suggests, the song is actually super fun and upbeat, the chorus is catchy, and the dance is so much fun that I'm surprised they haven't gone viral with it yet. Seriously, if you're one of the people who misses fun and silly girl group concepts, you won't regret giving them a listen!
SKYLE - SKYLE is a four member girl group under Good Luck Entertainment that debuted with “Fly Up High” in August of 2021. They received some attention during their debut despite being from a small company, but unfortunately it was all because of fans claiming they were copying BlackPink and Everglow with their girl crush concept. Shortly after their debut, they made a music video for their b-side “Da Da Da” which I personally love (and think they should have made the title track to avoid plagiarism claims). They also released an adorable Christmas song called “Our Christmas” before not making any music for a while and releasing some covers and videos on their YouTube channel. Finally, they recently they came back with “Bye Bye Bye” and I absolutely ADORE this song. Also, their company is great at making low-budget music videos look great and work well with the song. Honestly, this group has a lot of potential and I’m really hoping they begin to get more recognition!
bugAboo - bugAboo is a six member girl group under A Team Entertainment that debuted in October of 2021 with their self-titled track “bugAboo” that featured a fun twist on the girl crush concept and featured the girls as ghost busters! Some of the members might look familiar, as Choyeon and Eunchae were both on Produce 48. Recently they had a comeback with “Pop,” another bright teen crush concept kind of like Weki Meki’s early concept. If you want to learn more about the members, they have a series they release called “Discover the Members’ Chemistry” on their YouTube channel that I would recommend, it’s super well edited!
Of course, I can’t leave out the rookies that we all know about this year. I don’t need to introduce them, you all know them, but these groups are KILLING the game and they deserve a mention!
NewJeans - If you haven’t heard “Hype Boy” or “Attention” by now, you’re definitely not on TikTok. NewJeans is a five member girl group under ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE, and they went super viral before they even debuted. Then, we got their debut with “Cookie” and well.... Considering the members ages, it’s uncomfortable. Personally, since I’m an adult, I won’t be comfortable stanning them with the current circumstances, but it’s undeniable that they have taken the internet by storm and they will be HUGE in the future.
NMIXX - NMIXX is a seven member girl group under JYPE that debuted in February with “o.o” which was... Something, for sure. I feel like there’s a few good songs in there somewhere, but they were all shoved together and in doing so the members’ talents were buried. However! They have done some incredible covers AND they’ll be having a comeback soon with “Dice” so I’m hoping the members will be able to shine!
VIVIZ - Former GFriend members SinB, Eunha, and Umji made their debut again this year as the three member girl group VIVIZ with their title track “Bop Bop” and recently went on Queendom and came back with “Loveade.”
Kep1er - Kep1er is a temporary group formed through the survival show Girls Planet 999. They made their debut with “WA DA DA” and the girls don’t seem to have gotten any rest since then, as they participated in Queendom, came back with “Up,” and have been travelling around to multiple international Kpop concerts, such as KCON. They even made a Japanese debut with “Wing Wing.” Please let them rest, WakeOne.
LE SSERAFIM - We all know LE SSERAFIM, it’s impossible not to know them with everything that has happened and how viral their debut song “Fearless” went. With former IZ*ONE members Sakura and Chaewon and popular Produce 48 contestant Yunjin, it would be very hard for them not to succeed. They are a now five member girl group under HYBE, if you somehow didn’t know. There’s no denying that they’re going to play a huge roll in Kpop from here on out.
Billlie - I honestly think most international fans know Billlie by now, with Tsuki going viral every time she blinks and their songs going viral on TikTok, but for anyone who doesn’t know, Billlie is a seven member girl group under Mystic Entertainment that debuted in November of 2021 with “GingaMingaYo (the strange world)” and dragged me right back into being in love with Kpop by reminding me what I love about it. This is to say that they are incredible. Most recently, they had a comeback with “Ring My Bell (what a wonderful world)” and introduced us to a whole new rock concept from them!
LIGHTSUM - Technically, LIGHTSUM is a year old now, but I don’t think they get as much attention as they deserve so I’m including them. LIGHTSUM is an eight member girl group under CUBE (unfortunately) that debuted in June of 2021 with “Vanilla.” They have an incredible line-up, with Chowon, Nayoung, and Yujeong from Produce 48 and Juhyeon from The Unit as part of the group. While you’ve probably heard of them, I hope you’ll actually give them a good listen and watch their stages: they’re incredibly talented and unfortunately seem to get brushed to the side. They’ve had comebacks with “Vivace” and “Alive” as of late, and if there’s one song you’ll listen to by them, check out “Alive” I promise you’ll enjoy it!
XG - So XG is technically a global Japanese girl group, since all of the members are Japanese. However, since they've been promoting in Korea and I love their songs, I decided to include them. XG is a seven member girl group that debuted with their song "Tippy-Toes" in March and recently went viral with their song "Mascara" blowing up on social media. They upload behind the scenes videos and covers on their YouTube channel if you'd like to learn more about them!
