director yang lei is zhang luyi’s fanboy

this has been in my draft for days, and i don’t know if anyone will have the patience to read it, but i finally decided to post it after making a supporting gif set earlier lol. anyways, this has been talked about in the cfandom. it’a almost apparent that three-body’s director yang lei is a “fanboy” of zhang luyi or zhang luyi is yang lei’s muse. 

did you ever feel that almost every shot of wang miao was extra “pretty” in three-body? I mean, every shot was treated with utter respect in this show, and zhang luyi is handsome himself. but as a lot of fans mentioned, it felt that wang miao’s shots were just extra pretty or even sensual, especially with the full body tilt shots (yes, i made this set just for this post lol) that you usually wouldn’t see for a character that’s a middle aged male scientist. a lot of fans are finally getting the appeal of zhang luyi thanks to three-body. and it’s speculated that yang lei, who has worked with zhang luyi multiple times in the past, was part of the reason why those shots were there.

you want to know how much yang lei likes zhang luyi? screencaps from one bts video might shed some light. yang lei, zhang luyi, and yu hewei were writing on the screen to showcase their handwriting (and playing with the screen lol). zhang luyi and yu hewei did the normal thing. they wrote poems:

BUT director yang lei, he just kept writing zhang luyi’s name. and fans were like...this is too much!!! we know. we know that you love him. we know! 

in the first screencap below, he wrote zhang luyi’s name once to “summon” the actor to the screen. and quickly wiped that out after zhang luyi was there looking at him.

then, here, he wrote zhang luyi’s name for at least three times (circled in green). i’m almost sure that the one that was cut off on the right of the screen was his name because in the next screencap the top two names were in the exact same handwriting and position. our director only remembered to start to write yu hewei’s name (in purple circle) after that. poor yu hewei xD

lastly, i don’t know if this screencap below came in before or after the one above. if it was after the one above, then, yang lei erased one of zhang luyi’s names and yu hewei’s name, and finally remembered that he was filming this show called “three-body” and started to write it (in yellow circle). if it was before the screencap above, then, after he wrote three-body, he was like “nope, i don’t need the show name. i need one more zhang luyi.”

jokes aside, i read multiple interviews describing how close yang lei and zhang luyi were. they were old friends that were almost like families to each other. they can understand each other just through their eyes without any words. during the filming of three-body, yang lei wrote a lot of notes on the script. and immediately after reading them, zhang luyi would say i got it. and his acting would turn out to be exactly what yang lei had in mind.

in one other interview, the producer of another show said that you didn’t need to convince people about how much they loved each other. as a precious friend to yang lei, the director wouldn’t just give any roles to zhang luyi. it would have been the trump card, a character that was legendary in the show.

also, if the sites i researched on provided accurate info, the red in 2014 was the first series that zhang luyi played the main character. and as the cdrama with the second highest rating in 2014 on douban, it was the series that made zhang luyi more famous. guess what, the director was yang lei. 

and when the red was mentioned, you had to also mention the “infamous�� torture scenes of zhang luyi. these scenes are apparently resurfacing, and old and new fans are enjoying them because he was too “pretty” even in these unfortunate circumstances. and thanks to yang lei, we got to see these.

have i ever told the story about the water torture scene in red? it was the very last scene zly needed to shoot, and yang lei was the director. they were stuffing that water hose into his month, and during the entire shooting, zly said it was fine, and he could endure it. but after the shooting was done, he quietly went to the side and started to wipe blood from his month. and only till then yang lei realized that zly was hurt, and he felt so guilty for not noticing it during the shooting. 杨导心疼穆斯了。

So I’m GUESSING the context is that the lady allowed his character to wash up in her bathroom, but somehow this little shit thought why didn’t i have a bath in milk and rose pedals and have some fun? then the lady came back and he got startled. the lady did say this at the end, “did i allow you to wash your full body here? shameless shit! finish up and fuck off!”

damn, i’m intrigued by the look of this character. he’s not the lead, so there’s not much of him in the trailer, but just these is interesting (and gay lol) enough...also what happened in the last screencap? what did he do this time to get himself in a damsel in distress situation lol.

so I’ve been doing some 考古 (digging at this past works) on 鱼旦 (if you don’t know why his most loyal fans call him 鱼旦/yudan, send me an ask) on weibo, douban, and bilibili...i admit that despite knowing him being an awesome actor from years ago, a lot of his works are not my cup of tea, and my impression was that most of the time his character would get a female love interest. but why were the directors doing all of the above? it’s definitely not just yang lei that’s been doing this to him...why?????????????????? directors and cinematographers, i have questions. i have fucking questions!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, i have no context of what's happening in each of the screencap...all i want to do is to scream get your hands off him!!!!!!!! LOLLOLLOL

now i'm even more looking forward to the dmbj drama because of its inherent homoerotism...also can he do more modern crime dramas please? please? if you haven't figured it out, i prefer modern dark dramas with as little cishet romance as possible. i'm extremely picky about chinese costume dramas which is why you rarely see me posting about any costume dramas.

anyways, we all know that yang lei is a zhang luyi fanboy. now that i looked at these scenes, i was like...maybe he has a lot more director fanboys than we thought..

i realized that i haven't done one of these for exactly half a year lol.

WHY WHY WHY...why does he gets abused so damn much lol 🤣🤣...this is from a 2018 drama named the patriot...in one scene, he was dunked in dirty water (not sure if it's the scene below, but i know there's another proper torture scene where his neck was tied with a belt, and that scene involves water too), and he insisted on filming it himself in that dirty water. as a result, he was sick for a week or so because he drank some of that water during filming. he has my total respect from a fellow germophoble.

ok, this was yang lei's doing again. WTF, DIRECTOR??? so it seems that they were brothers (!!!). and they probably hadn't seen each other for a while. so they hugged normally...BUT why did the younger brother's pants fall off just like that??? and the girlfriend was like lol look at this pants. I’m like what??? YANG LEI, ARE YOU OK??? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY??? the fans were like we really didn't get this scene. what is the meaning of the pants falling off besides the "the obvious meaning"...like there's no logical or legit meaning to this scene. DAMN IT! YANG LEI, WHY!!!!????

also there was this old su youpeng interview on zly. he was like it’s not just production team picking actors. actors also pick the production team. so when he and zly met for the first time, su youpeng said it felt like a blind date. he kinda hesitated before saying the word “blind date” like he didn’t know if can say it, and he just smiled like that after saying the word...and he used words like mesmerizing to describe zly. WTF ZLY??? as many have said, if it’s just one director, then it’s the director’s problem. if it’s every director, then it’s the actor’s problem...ZLY WHY DID YOU KEEP PUTTING A SPELL ON YOUR DIRECTORS??? LOLLOL

ok...i don't know why this just keeps happening in almost every damn show he's in...there's even one weibo post asking in which show did zly not get beaten up/tortured or cry or both??? again, it's now like a famous saying in the fandom "if it's just one director, that's the director's problem. if it's every director, then it's the actor's problem" lol...

ps. the first screencap is from a show that most fans don't really talk about much. i think it's because his character's ending is really tragic to a point that nobody even wants to mention it??? i was like how tragic could it be???!!!
