Week 7 : Body Modification: The Cosmetic Gaze

Body modification, an enduring aspect of human culture, has long been intertwined with the desire to alter and enhance physical appearance. From ancient tattoos and piercings to modern-day cosmetic procedures and digital filters, the human body has served as a canvas for self-expression. Body modification is a global phenomenon, practiced in diverse forms and for various reasons (Barker & Barker, 2002, p. 92). Examples from around the world include nose piercings associated with Hinduism, neck elongation in Thailand and some African cultures, henna tattooing in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, tooth filing in Bali, lip piercing and earlobe stretching in parts of Africa, and both male and female circumcision in numerous regions (Larkin, 2004; Barker & Barker, 2002; Bendle, 2004). These practices reflect the cultural, religious, and social significance attached to body modification in different societies. 

One of the earliest known instances of body modification belongs to Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,300-year-old mummified body discovered in the Alps. Ötzi's body bore 61 carbon pigment tattoos, possibly indicating social status or involvement in ritualistic practices (Samadelli et al., 2015). These markings reflect the deep historical roots of body modification and its significance in human identity.

The concept of body modification extends beyond mere aesthetics; it often carries deeper cultural, social, and personal meanings. In contemporary society, the term "body art" is commonly associated with artists who use their bodies as both subject and medium, producing works that challenge societal norms and explore themes of identity, gender, and vulnerability. Artists such as Marina Abramović and Chris Burden have pushed the boundaries of body art, making their physical bodies central to their creative expression (Vergine, 1974). This practice highlights the body as a site of both artistic creation and social commentary. 

Nowadays, with the increasing number of body modification practitioners, the practice has become more normalized and widely accepted. This normalization extends to various forms of modification, including tattoos, piercings, and plastic surgery. Many individuals use these methods to alter, "correct," or "perfect" certain aspects of their appearance, often viewing their bodies as canvases for creative self-expression. While a desire to enhance body image motivates some, this is not the case for everyone who engages in body modification. For many, the appeals of body modification stems from a desire for personal expression or the wish to challenge conventional beauty norms. Some embrace it as a form of fashion, using their bodies to reflect their inner selves and live authentically through their chosen aesthetics (Kang & Jones 2007). One recent study suggests that individuals who were moderately to heavily tattooed have “an increased sense of self-confidence after having pierced or tattooed their bodies” (Carroll & Anderson 2002: 628). However, there is still stigma associated with several types of body modification, including scarification, tattoos, and body piercings. The body is considered sacrosanct by some, who consider it a gift from a higher power.  In their perspective, altering the body through modification undermines its natural state and defies its intended sanctity. WIP Wednesday

Thought I would share a bit of the next chapter of Contrasts. I don't know if it's clear but since this story is about different time periods interacting with each other, I've put it into a nesting doll format with the furthest parts of the timeline on the outside and this is the capstone set in the High Republic. After this we go back further in time with the remainder of the story. So, this chapter is all about Rooper and her first weeks as a Knight! I hope readers will enjoy it.

  The buzzing jabbing needle moving across her inner arm had ceased to hurt. It was more like a sunburn now, something between a prickling and a tickle. It made it easy to converse with her tattoo artist while she worked.

  “You’d better be careful, your Padawan is doing such a good job at customer relations, I might hire him full time.” Deasha quipped. Her lekku were secured behind her back to keep them out of the way but Rooper was sure the tips were wagging as they usually were when the Twi’lek was kidding around.

  Rooper Nitani looked over at her brand new Padawan Learner who was making conversation with a young lady nervous about getting her first tattoo. His shaggy dark blue hair had been recently shaved into an undercut along the sides and back aside from the braid which she was still getting used to maintaining. She had enough problems keeping her own hair in order. Rooper could just hear Tesh’s voice piping up over the noises of the shop giving the patron reassuring advice. She’d let him get his tattoo first, since he did not have any attachments to his former Pantoran clan he had chosen to get lines on his cheek in the style of Kevmo Zink. A lot of the young Pantoran initiates had done so as well, Zink was becoming a sort of martyr to the next generation of Jedi who were younglings during the Path of the Open Hand crisis.

  “I know. He’s a charmer, isn’t he? It scares me a little.”

  The artist looked up from her work. “What do you mean?”

  “Well, once I was knighted I expected to be called back to Coruscant to select a Padawan Learner. Instead, they sent me a list of names with attached holos of initiates I could visit from temples along the frontier. Tesh was making this face in the portrait, like he was telling an exciting story to the camera operator.”

  Rooper closed her eyes and that image was right there on her eyelids. Tesh’s brows raised high, his eyes wide open. Smiling but with his mouth open in a look of pure joy and curiosity.

  “He was just so adorable, I felt like I wanted to protect that little youngling with all my abilities. I read his bio and soon was off to collect him.”

  Deasha dipped her needle into her pot of ink and continued her work. “So what’s the problem?”

  “The problem is he gives me that look all the time. The joy and anticipation is overwhelming. It makes me worry that I have no idea what I’m doing and he’s just so full of expectation and enthusiasm. I was just a Padawan myself days ago. How am I supposed to be a mentor now?”

  Plus there was the fact that she did not think she could forgive herself if something happened to a Padawan so adorable. Silandra lost one of hers during a particularly dangerous mission and it put a bit of a taint on her relationship with Rooper. And it had taken many years for her to recover. But she felt that was too personal to relate to a civilian.

  “Did you feel that way with Master Sho?”

  “I suppose I did.”

  ”Seems like it wasn’t so long since you were a kid yourself.”

  “Yes, but I spent so much time and effort to seem mature that I tried to overwrite those feelings and I’ve lost touch of what it felt like.”

  Deasha grunted. “It’ll come back to you, I’m sure. Or you can comm Master Sho.”

  Silandra was indisposed for a time, as one of the survivors of the battles on Jedha and Dalna she was part of the Planning Committee deciding what was to be done about the remnants of the Path of the Open Hand and if there should be further investigation into the terrifying Force-eating creatures they commanded.

  “She’s going to be busy for a bit.”

  Her artist smiled. “She’d tell you to trust in the Force, non?”

  Rooper smiled to herself. “Yes. She would.”

It’s early in the morning when Antonin finally gets home. He had watched the sun rise on his walk back to the manor and could feel hunger clench a fist around his stomach. He cared more about that than blood on his shirt but Snowflake, the house elf, that lived with them seemed vexed and she had made him give her the shirt before the stains could set. Snowflake was helpful, loyal and worked tirelessly to ensure things ran well in Antonin’s house. She cared as much about appearances as he did, but sometimes he wished she’d care a little bit more about food. She was stood in the kitchen sink, scrubbing his button up while he rummaged through the cabinets looking for muffin mix. 

“Yaysta,” he asks the elf, looking for a mixing bowl. 

“Master Antonin knows Snowflake does not speak Russian.”

“Vell Master Antonin zinks little elfs should be learnink and be helpink make mooffins by gettink eggs,” he sets the bowl on the counter pointedly. The elf tuts at him before hopping out of the sink and walking to the fridge and retrieving eggs. A trail of wet foot prints is left behind but she brings the eggs and container of milk over for him. He pours the mix into the bowl and the elf cracks the eggs. As sassy as the elf is, they work well together and the collaboration between them is unspoken. “Are gur-rels still sleepink? Ve make family breakfasts and you vake zem up to eat vith me,” he asks the elf as she starts stirring the mix. 

“Mistress Jocelin is awake already,” the elf points her spoon to the doorway and Ant follows along to find Jocelin is in fact awake and watching them. He frowns a little but it’s a bit late to glamor his tattoos now that she’s seen them. C’est la vie, as the French would say. “Come sit. You vant help or drink or somethink Joh-see-lin?”

Ötzi the Iceman's Tattoos May Have Been a Primitive Form of Acupuncture

Ötzi the iceman, a spectacularly preserved mummy of a man who was murdered about 5,300 years ago, may have consumed medicinal herbs and had a treatment similar to acupuncture prior to his death, a new study reveals.

"The ancient society of the iceman most likely already had a considerable knowledge about medical treatment. It seems that they used different forms of therapy, including physical treatment and using medical plants. This definitely requires a certain knowledge of the human anatomy as well as how diseases arise and develop," study author Albert Zink, head of the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies in Bolzano, Italy, told Live Science in an email.

The iceman, the oldest glacier-bound mummy ever discovered, was found by hikers in Italy's Ötztal Alps in 1991, and since then, scientist have scrutinized almost every aspect of the man's life. Genetic analysis revealed that the iceman had a host of ailments at the time of his murder (by a blow to the head). Read more.
