Mixam/text zine printing updates - it's finally happening (or not - see latest post).

(written two or three days ago (Monday night?/very early Tuesday) but only just posted / made visible to all due to being too distracted by tiredness/being on my period/somebody trying to banish the moths & rat(s) lurking in and under parts of the house ).

Flicking through the online preview + hitting the proof button and looking at the actual onscreen proof complete with bleed, crop marks & technical info is making this suddenly feel real

Got the dreaded "Resolution of color and grayscale images is lower than 101 pixels per inch" warning on some of the pages on the preview, so they probably won't print so great, & will need either changing or upscaling for a finished issue. + not sure how well those full bleed double page spreads'll work on separate folded and stapled pages.

Fuck, this is it, filling in my details, crossing my fingers and making payment* & confirming artwork for printing.

should get my test print zine next Monday wish me luck *Hoping Mixam don't have a last minute 'can't print this cos of swearing/copyright'. *

(*paypal just asked me "is this you?" and made me enter a texted security code - I don't think anyone else is using my laptop to print obsessive Dennis fanzines)

Also had some confused moments looking for the 'confirm order button' without realising I hadn't reached that screen yet, mixam don't ask you to confirm till after you've filled in your address details & paid.

WHYis there someone in the main jrwi tags complaining about problematic content in the suckening fics on ao3. like dude. okay i don’t like incest fics either and i can agree w u that there are a lot of those on ao3 and i don’t like seeing them!!! i rly hate it actually!!! but equating that to the same level of problematic as sexual content in general and encouraging people to write their wholesome suckening fic ideas to facilitate a “healthy fic environment ^_^” and complaining about a discord server that you are NOT in where people talk about innappropriate content is really not the move u think it is. why are you talking about this in the main tags who are you

im curious as to about how long each of your pieces takes?? it took me two class periods to be satisfied with the pinch pot we just made in ceramics class (though that’s probably also because im very much a perfectionist) so i can’t imagine how long a whole critter would take

it really depends!! some of them (unpainted, simple shapes) take as little as five minutes; some of them (large, complex shapes with very detailed painting) take as much as 10 hours.

I have gotten way faster over the years, though, so don't think I'm just some natural genius! the skills of sculpting build on each other. Just last year it took me three hours to make a simple fox, and now I can bust out a really nice fox (with toe beans!) in two hours. it just takes time and repetition to get there <3

and hey congrats on being in a ceramics class!! I hope you have fun with it!! If you like critters, I recommend stealing some of the clay and making some kind of toadish blob out of it and firing it in the kiln, as long as your studio masters won't get mad about it. the joy of making a lumpy little guy is unmatched.

examples of sculpture + time counts below the cut!

Little guys like this tiny cicada, which is a design I've done so many times that I can make them on autopilot, are in the 5-15 minutes range to sculpt. bunnies, chickens, wizards, and mini-cats are like that for me too!

but if I add the time it takes to paint them, even simple sculptures can end up taking much more time—for instance, this starry chicken took only five minutes to make but about an hour to paint.

then when you get into the more complex shapes, those can take a lot of time—this anthro coyote took me 3 hours to sculpt because it was a complex shape AND I was unfamiliar with making anthros so I was learning as I went:

and when you add complex designs to complex sculptures, you end up with projects like this peach-tree bear, which took three hours to make and five hours to paint, so that's eight hours in one sculpture:

and eight hours is about my limit for sculptures I'm going to sell. BUT. when I'm making things for myself, I'm willing to spend even MORE time on them to make them perfect for my own tastes. I tend to spend the most time on fanart sculptures—it takes a lot more time to make a sculpture perfectly on-model to a pre-existing character than it does to make up a whole new thing. So the sculpture that has taken me the most time so far in this batch is this JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fanart sculpture, Star Platinum:

three hours to make the body, seven hours to paint him—Star has taken me ten hours total so far!!

In case the lack of fics/chapters being posted recently is making anybody nervous, I’m just giving you guys the quick update that none of the fics have been abandoned! I’m just back at the hospital for an indeterminate amount of time so things have been a little stressful the last week ✨

On one hand, that means more time to write/paint. On the other hand, creativity and productivity are going to depend greatly on how much treatment‘s kicking my ass on a day to day basis 🤣

I think sometimes the world is a little... not unbearable but fuck it's heavy. Not unsafe to carry but like... Would rather get to the storeroom sooner than later so we can pack it all away safe, yknow? And for that I am grateful the people I love are able to give me weird little arts and crafts projects about it

Summary of Art 2024 before NY's?! Crazy!! Happy Holidays~

For the last 4 years (more mindfully and successfully the last two), instead of yearly goals/ resolutions I've been setting "mindsets". Making art is a process of expressing my soul burning bright, with whatever fuels it at the time, so taking care of my body and mind has been essential in keeping the relationship healthy, happy and on the dance floor. I am pretty sure I've noted somewhere what I wanted to do this year project wise (or it was so intense it got printed on my brain), which was finish at least one project and find my answers on what it means to me to "want" and "have to". The latter is still a wip, but more on that on the DW entry under the cut, hehe~

::Quick Summary

January, February, March: Mostly messing around doodling and half-jokingly working on skull-anatomy because I was busy out of my mind studying & working on a long project || April: Project working, moved to my village to focus, played The Sims2 after over a decade, paperwork hell, streaming nights~ || May: Major win!! project finish, Convention Time! || June: Moved out & patiently building energy lvls again.. 🐚 || July: Picked up the pencil & drew a bunch of Sephiroths in my sketchbook, read books, physio </3 || August: Going on a skull-spree!! (also still a wip but I'll learn to draw faces no matter what!!) || September: Chaniartoon Fest, sketches, paintings, wips, making buttons for the first time and as if all weren't enough-- baked banana bread(s) and went off to get the Open Water cert. after so many years (／ˍ・、) || October: drawing for my friends gives me life and is the best thing I've done this month ♥ || November: con prep, back to class while simultaneously working, zine work, dog-sitting!! || December: work, zine, homework, loads loads LOADS of music?! ♥ (((*°▽°*)八(*°▽°*)))

Thank you for a "do-it-scared" year 🌱 Some kind of leap-of-faith on it's own.. ✸ Wishing everyone health & strength to overcome any challenge 2025 has in its sleeve. May you indulge in what makes you happy ♥

Fun facts:

Started reading literature this year. Had a blast (and got blasted, in multiple ways).

In one of my dives (scuba) I threw up in the sea in front of a tourist boat, those that have glass bottoms. No one will forget that at the centre. I got the reputation now.

David Wojciechowski & Victor Fritzsche - Gato was the album that carried me through January - February and you should absolutely give it a listen if you haven't yet, and if you have, listen to it again!!

I wrote a dreamwidth entry with everything I think is relevant (but also might not be). It can be be relatable though, so I'm happy to leave it out there.

Yes! Unfortunately I don’t really have a timeline on when to expect that 😅

Long story short, I started a ton of WIPs at once and bit off a bit more than I could chew. I ended up setting some of them on pause so I could focus on a couple of at a time, and Pagan’s Prayer happened to be one of those that got the hiatus. I did manage to finish some of my other projects, and I’m taking a bit of a break from longer WIPs now to recharge, but that one is definitely on my list to pick up again soon!
