GUNESI BEKLERKEN - 2014

The male lead in the picture: Kerem Sayer, 18 years old, experienced a childhood trauma (His older brother died in a car accident.) and has still been suffering from it. After that, his parents, especially his father neglected him when he was just a kid. His dad still can't get over the loss and usually spends his days in his room.

Kerem: I would never put the girl I love in danger.

Months later...

His enemy forces him to choose one person: The girl he loves or his father who is in jail.

He runs to Zeynep first then they go to see his father together.

He was the reason she was in danger but also saved her from it.

YABANI - 2024

The male lead -more like the antagonist- in the picture: Alaz Soysalan, 19-20 years old, has a childhood trauma (his older brother is kidnapped and they can't find him) His mother has never been over this pain and he's been neglected by her.

Alaz: Nobody will be able to hurt you from now on.

A couple of days later...

He will decide who will die. The girl he loves or his brother.

He shoots Yaman.

He said he wouldn't let anyone hurt her but ended up being the one who hurt her because of not bearing to hurt her. See how fucked up that is?

You know I have a type, I know that. But look at the formula, 10 years later it's still working very well.

This kind of unfortunate event circle only happens in Greek tragedies btw. What's next? Making him walk away without looking back at her in order to save her while she is following him behind?

I think there's kind of twist in Yaman's case. A prop gun? A bulletproof vest? Or just luck? It doesn't matter, because he will live, since he's the hero. But at what cost?

If you give your antagonist or gray anti-hero character a love interest that is the lifeline for them, you can write anything extreme because yes, they will do that and suffer endlessly. Because it suits them well.

I am not saying I am looking forward to watching this, I can only hope the writer team will surprise me.

Names and Titles of the Turkish shows I have mentioned.

You asked, I deliver!

Ps. This is not in any order (minus the first one). It is based on the order the Posters were saved on my desktop. And I tried to only post Shows that are done, or have a completed season. I tried not to include currently airing shows. But I failed there are still a few in this list.

#1. Kara Sevda (Endless Love).

Summary: A young artist finds herself obligated to sacrifice her love story for hiding a family secret.

This is hands down the best Turkish show that I have watched. It’s absolutely beautiful, with a very, very talented cast. Beware though, you will not get a happy ending. Nevertheless, it’s absolutely worth it.

#2. Ask i Memnu (Forbidden Love)

Summary: Having lost his wife eleven years ago, Adnan devoted all his attention to his daughter Nihal and his son Bülent. Adnan, who lives in one of the most prominent mansions along the Bosporus in Istanbul with a relative's son Behlül, and his children's nanny, meets Bihter who is also a socialite couple's daughter she is very elegant and beautiful, everyone who meets her get stunned and jealous of her, and he falls in love with her. While searching for peace, safety and happiness in Adnan's mansion, Bihter meets passion. Behlül and Bihter fall completely into each other and become drowned by their infatuation with each other. Their secret love affair will soon affect every member of the family.

This is the most popular Turkish show, in Turkish history. It been replayed and sold to many other countries, and is dubbed in various languages. Again, this has top-notch acting. And yet again, don’t expect a happy ending. But it is worth it.

#3. Kiralik Ask (Love for Rent)

Summary: When Defne's brother gets into debt and is held captive, Defne is forced to accept an offer in exchange for the money. She has to make omer, a wealthy shoe designer who owns a company, fall in love with her and marry her.

This is probably the most popular Turkish Romantic comedy. It actually is very funny and the cast has great chemistry.

#4. Gunesi Beklerken (Waiting for the Sun)

Summary: Looking for a better life, Demet tries to convince her only daughter Zeynep to leave their home village. They move into Demet's old friend's house Jale, and Zeynep is able to enroll at the same private college as where Jale works as the principal. Moving to a new big city and a new school is found to be very challenging for Zeynep - and she finds herself getting into a fight against the school owner's son, Kerem. Zeynep was brought up without a father and was told by her mother that her father was lost as a member of the Navy during one of his missions at sea. All Zeynep has as a memory of his father is a photo that she takes everywhere with her. Her biggest dream is to one day meet her father and she is determined to not stop looking for him, even after moving to Istanbul. Meanwhile, Kerem Sayer's is initially portrayed somewhat as a bully - he owns the schoolyard and forces the kids to do what he pleases. He becomes the nemesis of Zeynap when finding out that Zeynap is willing to stand up to him.

This is a teenager/high school type of show, but it is the best that there is. It actually is very serious and isn’t childish at all. The chemistry between the two leads is unbelievable. And the acting of the cast, especially the male lead, is phenomenal. I have personally watched this show multiple times. Totally would recommend.

#5. Kuzey Guney (North and South)

Summary: Kuzey and Güney are brothers, yet they cannot be more different, both in character and also in their perception, much like their names they are north and south. While the older brother Güney strives in school and is the general good boy next door, his younger brother is nothing like him, he is wild and unpredictable. Despite their differences, the disparate brothers still fall in love with the same girl, Cemre, who has just moved into the neighbourhood. When Cemre and Güney get together, Kuzey is devastated. An unfortunate event leads to a car accident where a man dies. Even though Güney drove the car that causes the death of a man, Kuzey takes the blame on himself and goes to prison for hit-and-run. After four years, he is released from prison and returns to his family.

This is another very popular show in Turkey, that has won many awards. The script and acting are phenomenal. It tackles some very important concepts of life and family.

#6. Icerde (The Insider)

Summary: A story of two brothers torn from each other. Now on the opposite sides of the law, brothers Sarp and Mert are put against each other, unaware of their fraternity.

One of the best shows I have watched. The acting of the two leads is absolutely superb. The chemistry that they have, as brothers, makes you fall in love with them. It’s filled with action, suspense, love and sacrifice.

#7. No 309 (Number 309)

Summary: Out of pure coincidence, Onur and Lale meet at the same place due to a blind date that is arranged by their mothers. And during the next morning, they find themselves in the same bed.

A vet well written Romantic Comedy, that takes the audience through every stage of the lead couples life. From dating to marriage and kids. It’s done very well and is very funny. I reccomend.

#8. Cesur Ve Guzel (Brave and Beautiful).

Summary: Cesur returns to his father's village with an elaborate plan to avenge the death of his father. The only thing he hadn't planned for is Suhan, the daughter of the man he believes is responsible for his father's murder.

Any show with these two leads is going to be good because they can ACT! great script, great chemistry, and a great storyline.

#9. Gunesin Kizlari (Daughters of the Sun)

Summary: Gunes is a 35 years old woman and a literature teacher whose husband left her with no reason. So she decides to get married in order to afford a good future for her three daughters.

A very well done Teenage drama. However, this tackles some serious issues such as rape, betrayal, and suicide. Great chemistry and superb acting. I have watched this multiple times too.

#10. Yasamayanlar (The Immortals)

Summary: The story will begin in Istanbul in the 1800s and stretch daily. Mia will work with young rebels to destroy Dmitry, which will cross the road at a luxurious nightclub in Istanbul.

So this is the first vampire Turkish show. It is very gritty and dark. The lead male actor takes the show and makes it his own. He has a phenomenal way of acting. Kerem Bursin, I love you. Just putting it out there.

#11. Kiraz Mevsimi (The season of Cherry).

Summary: Öykü and Ayaz met coincidentally. Then fate begins to bring them together.

One of the most popular Turkish Romantic Comedy. The storyline is different, and the chemistry is great. The lead couple ended it up together in real life too, and have now been dating for 4 years.

#12. Adini Feriha Koydum (I named her Feriha)

Summary: A young, beautiful girl goes to a university where a playboy also studies.

This is the first show Cagatay Ulusoy did, and it was what started his career. He is now the most famous young Turkish actor and is staring in the Netflix original The Protector. This is a very beautiful love story that tackles themes of social class, love, and poverty. Highly recommend. Again, don’t accept a happy ending. But totally worth it.

#13. Kalp Atisi (Heartbeat)

Summary: Eylul the stubborn, school girl turns up to be a strong professional doctor with the help of her teacher Ali Asaf. After years of separation, they meet up again but not as a teacher and student, instead of as surgeons working side by side. Their love is met by many challenges and the inner conflict of the stubborn women who refuse to yield easily to her heart, refusing to repeat the miserable story of her dead mother.

Basically the Turkish version of Greys Anatomy. The leads have incredible chemistry and are very cute together.

#14. Medcezir (Ebb and Tide)

Summary: Yaman,who lives in one of the Istanbul's suburbs,is arrested and put in jail along with his brother Kenan for his brother stole a car at a gas station.Yaman gets a chance for a brand new start when he meets a lawyer Selim who takes Yaman to his new home.

The Turkish remake of The O.C. I highly recommend. I mean Who doesn't love the O.C? Add to it Cagatay Ulusoy and the Turkish culture, and you have a masterpiece.

#15. Soz (Promise)

Summary: Yavuz Karasu, a well-trained Turkish soldier, is in Istanbul with his fiance where a terrorist operation takes place. Dr. Bahar, who is not a surgeon, tries to save his fiance. After this incident, Yavuz goes back to Karabayir and Bahar follows him all the way to give him something that belongs to him. Another incident happens and he is chosen to be the commander of a team whose mission is to catch a terrorist and protect Karabiyir and their country Turkey. The whole team is solid, consistent, and willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of their country.

An action packed well acted Series. The lead is one of Turkey’s most talented young actors, and he's absolutely gorgeous. You get action, love, friendship and eye candy. Not a bad deal at all.

#16. 4n1k Ilk Ask (4n1k First Love)

Summary: Yaprak is best friends with four boys, ever since childhood. One day her world changes in a mysterious way. A new boy enrolls into the school and changes her life.

A high school show for teenagers. It doesn’t tackle serious issues like the other two teenage shows did, but the characters are so lovable and funny. It is worth the watch.
