To follow up my last post, I also wish we got more insight on Galra culture.
It seems like such a waste to have two very prominent alien races in a show and then not do much with their culture. I want to see religious/mythological figures, holidays and special traditions, behaviors and characteristics that are unfamiliar to our human characters

Hi! I was wondering what other vld ships you like/ship? If you don’t mind me asking
Though it's been a hot minute since I've really indulged in vld outside of working on LB, I'm one of those multishippers who can be persuaded on mostly anything so long as the narrative is compelling enough (particularly so far as Keith is involved)! My staples tend to be keitor (obviously) & sheith, but I have a fondness for fics that explore keith/kuron, keith/james, keith/regris, keith/allura, keith/matt in an interesting manner, and I've even read a few solid pieces featuring keith/lance, keith/kolivan, and (most surprisingly of all) keith/zarkon.
So far as non-keith-centric ships are concerned, I'm far choosier, but lotura is always a heartbreaker, ezor/zethird is cute but seldom written (bonus points if axca is their fwb third), shiro/ulaz lends itself to a tender sort of angst, and zarkon/honerva is just outright sad.
I can also go for all the above in a non-romantic sense, of course, but my major platonic dynamics are Pidge & mostly everyone, Keith & the entire BoM, and Lotor & the galra girl squad.
Less so than the ships themselves, it's actually the manner in which any given dynamic is written that sees me become particular: the portrayal of the characters, their mannerisms, their interactions with one another, the circumstances in which they've come together, etc etc... but if you have any fics that you would absolutely swear by—whether they feature a ship listed here or not—then by all means send them my way!
#as you can probably surmise I like dynamics with a little bit of ✨spice✨#it's about the //tension//... the //bite//... out-and-out sweetness is nice and all but it just doesn't grab me yk?#tbh you could probably even persuade me on a sendak fic if it was written in the right way#here's the thing: the dynamic doesn't necessarily have to be 'healthy' per say but the author //needs// to know what they're doing#the best example i can think of for this isn't even VLD it's a LoZ ghiralink fic uhh hang on—#'How Does It Feel' by Maiz_of_Light on ao3#now THAT is how you write a //deeply// greymoral dubious & dark scenario with the appropriate sensitivity#sa screams back#the author speaks

That pained breath didn't go unnoticed by the former general. Far too aware and familiar with the pain of losing a rank that once meant the universe to you. A sense of pride mixed with the tinge of pain from memories. A part of you that was no longer there that would fade into a distant past. Or perhaps she was also projecting her own internalized turmoil onto a singular bated breath.
❝ Cadettes on occasion. Mostly a curt remark from the refugees who now call this planet home. I have the face of their enemy after all. I am not unused to being judged for my Galran blood. Let alone for what I have done under the guise of peace. ❞
A thinly veiled pretty lie uttered by a man she had once trusted most. Sweet like honey and sticky enough to keep you ensnared. Yet deceptively tantalizing to the point you don't realize the mouth full of poison dripping down your throat as you eagerly swallow it whole.
❝ A team. . . ❞
whispered in a murmur on plum lips. Testing the way it slipped free from her. How long had it been since she last heard those words? Oh - that's right. Three long years ago. Yet it all felt like yesterday in a gut-wrenching way.
❝ With all due respect, pala- Shiro, my only experience with a team has been transactional. Commorady in return for what you bring to the table. Even then I often felt as if I was the only one keeping that rag-tag team together. Ezor and Zethird were far too stubborn to lean on anyone else besides themself. As for Lotor. . . it was all an act. I am not sure I know how to be soft enough to allow myself to lean on another. ❞
Not anymore at least.
"it's just shiro. i'm. . . technically not a paladin anymore," he says, breathing out as if the words cause him pain. brows furrow with concern as he turns to look at her. lips press into a thin line before he shakes his head. even if she could handle it, and he isn't doubting that she can't, she shouldn't be enduring any of it. while shiro understands the people of earth being afraid, acting this way isn't going to help anything. she was here to help them. shiro couldn't sit idly by while people were being awful to her.
"was it one of the cadets?" he asks, concern obvious on his features. "i know that. . . we haven't had much time together either," he starts, leaving out on the same side, "but you're still a part of this team, acxa." he reaches a hand out, confident as he places a hand on her shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze.
"the rest of the team would agree with me. no one will stand for this." shiro is quiet for a moment before he lets his hand fall back to his side, offering her a smile. "if you don't want to tell me who it was, that's okay, too. but. . . you don't have to handle it alone, okay? you've got a team to lean against."

i need someone like you to lighten the load
i need someone like you to lighten the load by slowklancing (notanannoyingfangirl) and sunnyjolras on AO3 ~ Ongoing ~ Mature ~ no warnings ~ Klance
Another scrap of parchment shot out of the cup, a fourth scrap of parchment, which made no sense at all, and the Headmaster grabbed it from the air, unrolling it and reading it quietly.
The entirety of the Great Hall remained silent. It was as quiet as a tomb.
“Lance Álvarez?” The Headmaster whispered, and then again, louder. “Lance Álvarez.”
Wait, what?
// Lance and Keith have always been battling it out: on the Quidditch field, in the duelling club, for the best marks in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Keith always manages to come out in the lead.
Now, the Triwizard Tournament has been announced and Lance knows that Keith is going to beat him for the only open spot, even if he pretends that he thinks otherwise. But it doesn’t quite go the way that Lance expects, and everything changes from there.
** updates every other Friday **
This ongoing Harry Potter au is the best. The writing is beautiful and really brings you into the story. (can you tell I suck at writing at reviews?) -Jess

The Grudge Critique
Continuing “the definitive nitpick post” critiques from Voltron Legendary Defender Season 8 -
Episode begins with a talk about pets that doesn’t include Cosmo, and I guess it’s supposed to make us like the Atlas crew...? All it did was remind the audience that Lotor killed his disabled general. In fact, Acxa even makes a point of telling us Narti couldn’t see without Kova.
Curtis speaks during this scene, and I would say his inclusion was to get the viewers acquainted with Shiro’s would-be hubby. (And despite my shipping preferences, I will say - the guy is adorable.) However, we learn nothing about Curtis’ history in this scene. Heck, I know what event made Iverson’s shoulder click! Give me something about Curtis!
Shiro calls the team to the bridge to take a message from the paladins. He couldn’t have done that himself? Plus, Coran was also on the bridge with him, and Coran is the only other person who speaks to the paladins. Ergo, there was no reason for Shiro to pull the bridge crew away from their workout routine.
Huh. Keith’s hair really grew here, and he’s super extra pretty.
Coran brings up Honerva not having the Mark of the Chosen. Does she? Or did Kuron? That was never explained. (Makes so much more sense if Honerva had piggy-backed on Allura or Lotor’s worthiness to get into Oriande, but VLD never cared about making sense past Season 2, as we know.)
“We need to rendezvous to come up with a plan.” - Oh, sure. Now you need the Atlas after Olkarion was destroyed for no reason, but I went in to that last critique. But I thought Voltron didn’t need the Atlas or Shiro.
Acxa talks about scaultrite, but when did Lotor actually use it? I’m assuming the gate, but it’s funny how Acxa won’t discuss the particulars. Why? Cuz she doesn’t know them. Neither do the viewers or the EPs, it seems.
“It would appear the mood at the table has become rather awkward. Most likely due to your Galra heritage.” No. The pilots’ reactions make the mood awkward, not the fact of Acxa’s heritage.
Shiro is alone again - on the bridge - and a communication came in from the paladins. How was he able to take it himself since the opening scene of the episode established he can’t? He literally has to call the bridge crew. Also, I’m pretty sure that’s JDS’ Shiro above.
Hm. Black is between Yellow and Blue. That’s a unique line-up. It might not mean anything, but I just thought it was interesting.
The beam holds down the lions but not the paladins? They can move freely? And thanks for pointing out the obvious redo in the plotting, Hunk.
Allura uses “whom!” Yay! I love when the paladins’ use whom!
During the fleeing scene, we lost Keith. He doesn’t speak. Lance gives all the orders, and we don’t see Keith again until after Pidge disarmed the drone (which looks a lot like the Dark Elves’ ships in Thor: The Dark World).
Hunk’s bayard shifts in the same blue as Keith does in Season 8.
Keith has a bayard that can shift, but instead of shooting the drone, he chucks his sword. Lance said he was about to do the same, yet Lance has never used in sword in battle. And Keith should have used his gun for the long-range attack, but...who cares about making sense? All together now, “Not Voltron.”
I’ve done this before, but Keith as Keith -
Kuron as Keith -
Lance as Keith -
Also, here’s a post about how Allura is posed like Lance. And though Hunk is slouched, Keith looks taller than him in this shot. And there is only one paladin taller than Hunk. (Hint: It’s not Keith.)
“Anyone read about the atmosphere?” Yes, Pidge did. Hunk responded it the comment, and it was on Keith’s screen. So writers, no need to ask if “anyone” read about the atmosphere because everyone did. And if you were just reminding us, the line should have been, “Hey, remember the atmosphere issues?” (I said this was a nitpick post.)
...yawn. Sorry. Dozed off there during the Veronica-Acxa scene. I want to like these characters, but I just feel that the Altas crew moments showcase characters from a different show.
Excuse me for one moment as I freak out -
Allura can’t find the lions on the planet?! Are you freakin’ kidding me? She could find the lions across the universe in the Very First Episode. She reached out to find Black in “The Black Paladins,” and the only justification for her not being able to find the lion was because it was “out of range.” Now - in the last season - Allura can’t find the lions. COME ON, WRITERS! GET IT TOGETHER!
...alright. I’m not back, but I’ll continue on...
Keith is leading the pirates away in his suit, and the paladins look like they are just talking a leisurely stroll through the park.
Lance knows where the lions are. Okay, this is officially the Lance Episode, and it should have been more called out. He was really great here.
Veronica says, “Lance? Right. The navigational genius.” I guess that’s supposed to be funny since Lance did locate the lions, but it just shows how little Veronica knows her brother now. And that’s - again - sad.
Distress signals - and now Shiro and the Atlas Crew have to come to the rescue. “Voltron is stronger than ever,” my ass, Keith.
“You think I forgot about you, Tiny Paladin? I’ll make you pay for what you did to me!” ...dude, I don’t even remember. Oh, thanks for the line about her brother, Bounty Hunter. I did need the refresher. What were you going after Matt for again? Oh, right. We never found out.
Allura needs to stop for a breather. Really? Allura? She’s an amazing fighter and totally in shape. But sure. Make her take the breather.
And look - Atlas to the rescue - cuz Voltron is so strong, it doesn’t need its former head.
Keith has his blade again. Hm. Did Krolia give it back to him? Think I missed that. (I didn’t.)
Keith went off alone - and his suit didn’t even lure the entire pirate crew, so there was literally no reason for him to go off alone. Great teamwork and found family, Writers. You’re really knocking it out of the park in this episode.
Oh, look. Shiro has a gun and doesn’t use it.
I’m going to skip over the Ezor-Zethird-Acxa discussion. It made no sense in the context of the story, but since it was altered to bring Ezor back, I’m not going to critique that. It was necessary.
The visually impaired version says Zethrid pointed the gun at Shiro, but I didn’t see that at all. I really thought that Zethrid pointed it at Acxa, and y’know - Shiro doesn’t speak at all in this part. Neither does Keith after the team arrives. Reminds me of “Lions’ Pride Part One” where Shiro says nothing to Sendak.
How did Veronica hit Zethrid in that shoulder? She’s positioned on the opposite side of Zethrid, so none of the MFE pilots had a shot - but Veronica did...shooting Zethrid in the arm she’s holding Keith with - not the arm in which she held the gun. The far arm.
...wait. Where is the gun? Never mind.
Oh, and when Ezor comes back, she’s still in pirate uniform. So I guess she’s still a pirate? Guess she didn’t let the rage go far.

What did you think of Ezor nearly torturing Pidge? I personally really like Pidge whump and thought it was great.
SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HASN’T WATCHED S7 YET
Oh man that scene. I mean, I knew ultimately nothing drastic was going to happen to Pidge. This isn’t SnK where they’re not above killing main characters coughArmin but they can make us worry in their own way. I already knew Ezor was a bit more on the sadistic side since she and Zethird were always the ones getting up to shenanigans while Acxa just rolled her eyes and let them do what they wanted when they weren’t on a mission. But Zethrid was pretty spot on with choosing to go after Pidge first considering how quick Lance was to jump up and protect her, so.... It took me by surprise but I wasn’t inherently worried for Pidge’s safety. Sounds terrible but I knew she’d be safe.

Hola!
No podía.
No. Basta.
No. Pidge.
-¡No!
Estaba decidido.- La voy a rescatar. Te lo juro.

Lance won’t end up with Allura...
I know everyone’s giving up hope but,,
1.) Allura was said to not have a romantic end game
2.) Lance is someone’s FIRST choice,, not second.
3.) The blush on Alluras face clearly signals she might be returning feelings for Lance,,, but if the Voltron crew is true to what they say about about Lance coming to terms with who he wants and who he needs, that lance is getting a maturing arc.? I’m predicting,, h o p I n g that if Allura does confes to Lance, he will reject her. He’ll know he’s not what he “needs” and explain to her what he does need and how they work better as friends ect.
But Keith and Acxa?? I honestly.. don’t know. It could happen? I wouldn’t nessicarly like to see it happen,, just personal feelings. But they made it a point to address romantic themes using Zethird.
((Also I know I love Klance but I’m not looking at this with ship goggles or in denial; I actually thought about who Lances end game partner could be and Pidge actually came to mind? I don’t really think it would happen but,, I wouldn’t be upset if that did happen. After all, Lance is cute, in that sorta way.))

Mizuko! It’s currently a rough sketch/edit. Pretty proud and happy have it turned out. The uniform/outfit is what she wore with her original ship before Zethird destroyed it. Don’t remove source/credit.
