Watching Zeorymer (excellent OVA) made me realise just how underappreciated Moriki Yasuhiro mechanical designs are. True master of imposing, alien looking robots.
Yes, he is a man behind OG Xi and Penelope.

You fool, the light of the moon can never hope to touch the heavens!
.
It is super weird that Moderoid did the Great Zeorymer first as a model kit, before doing this, the base form, and most recognizable form, of Zeorymer of the Heavens. An internet friendo, when I shared a pic of the box when the kit showed up, said that Zeorymer was a deep cut, as far as mecha stuff goes. And I suppose it is! But I happen to love Zeorymer, I learned of it initially through the Super Robot Wars games (it appears in MX and J), and I went out and watched the anime (even have the box dvd set!), and really enjoyed it. I keep getting told that the manga is... well there’s more story, but also it’s apparently kinda porny? I’ll be honest not super interested in reading the manga personally, I’m fine with the good anime, and using in SRW games where both appearances it is an absolute BEAST of a unit that can solo most stages if you upgrade it at all.
Two more shots under the cut, but honestly there’s only pose that matters with the Zeorymer XD and thats the one above, the HADES ATTACK! There’s no reason to pose it doing anything else really.

Zeorymer is a good OVA, but very messed up. Kihara is on the top 10 on most evil anime villains.

ryoma is like a weird neighbor im always running into..... any time im rooting around in old mecha stuff im inevitably gr jump scared
#I've been wanting to draw some silly guyv3r/srw stuff#i joke that the reason Sho does not get into these games is bc he has enough dad figures and doesn't need therapy#but it would be funny if he went to spend time with cousin zeorymer and bond w the other size changing heroes#and came back with bushy sideburns and getter crazy eyes

Anniversary: Mecha Press 14
Aug/Sept 1994
Here (still late) is a look at issue 14 of Mecha Press magazine. The first issue of Mecha Press that I picked up sometime in late ’94 or early '95.
This issue sees the continuation of three articles from the previous issue: the synopsis of Armored Trooper VOTOMS; capsule reviews of models from the Victory Gundam series; and “The Basics of Mecha Modeling”. And there are write-ups of a couple of other mecha series: Zeorymer and Detonator Orgun.
You may have noticed the words “House Special” on the cover of this issue of Mecha Press, this is because much of the issue is devoted to games being (or planned to be) produced by Dream Pod 9. Jovian Chronicles, Heavy Gear and Moonlight Mechanix* are written up in this issue in much the same way that mecha anime series are normally, with profiles of their fictional worlds and the mecha found in them. Some space is also devoted to Heavy Gear Fighter, the card game which was actually the first Heavy Gear game published.
Also of note is the “Engineering Outlook” section, which features an article on both real-world and fictional cockpit control systems. Interest in the details of real-world military hardware was, of course, quite common in mecha fandom in the ‘90s.
As I noted above, this was a special issue for me, being my introduction to Mecha Press. It also gave me my first look at Armored Trooper VOTOMS, which would become one of my favourite mecha anime series, and it also threw me into the worlds of Heavy Gear and Jovian Chronicles, game settings that I would come to know and love in the future.
*a game which never saw the light of day

Filling in the Blanks of An Abbreviated History of Mecha
As I worked on An Abbreviated History, it dawned on me that using a broad definition of mecha makes this a rather intense project. The more I went on, the more I thought "What about Gaiking/Hades Project Zeorymer/Gravion/Genesis of Aquarion," or "Maybe I should list Dragon Ball as an honorary mecha show," or "Would Dragon Ball technically BE a mecha show," or "Should I have mentioned Panzer World Galient?" You get the idea. It's also not helped by the fact that I have not watched most of these shows, so the most I can give of a description is, at best, superficial.
My problem is that if I had kept on second-guessing myself, I'd never finish this series. So this post's purpose is twofold:
To kick off a more long-term project that will fill in the many, many, many gaps in An Abbreviated History of Mecha.
To bring to light and to give you, dear reader, an idea of just how expansive mecha is.
So here's a, once again, incomplete list of mecha that was not covered in the original An Abbreviated History of Mecha series:
Gaiking
Kotetsu Jeeg/Steel Jeeg
Danguard Ace
Super Beast Machine King Dancouga
Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh/Matchless Raijin-Oh
Robot Jox
Heavy Gear
Genesis of Aquarion
Gotcha Force
Dragon Ball
gen:Lock (begrudgingly)
Giant Gorg
Armor Hunter Mellowlink
Gravion
Vandread
Ex-Arm (also begrudgingly, although given more time to think, I don't know if Ex-Arm actually counts anymore)
Hades Project Zeorymer
Megazone 23
Break Blade (originally was a part of Part 6 but was cut since, moreso than most shows, I didn't really have much to say about it)
Planet With
Granblem
Majestic Prince
Heavy Object
Obsolete
Gasaraki
Genocyber
Blue Gender
Flag
Knights of Sidonia
Porco Rosso
Howl's Moving Castle (the Ghibli Film, not the books, although if you squint I think you could count House of Many Ways)
The Wind Rises
Gintama (Tama out here carrying this stupid-ass series by herself)
Shogun Warriors (special thanks to Owlsounds for pointing this one out)
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Waters
The Princess and the Pilot
Medarot/Medabots
Zoids
Red Giant
Tryder G7
The Spider-Man Tokusatsu series
Iron Man
Rah'Xephon
Knights and Magic
Fafner of the Azure
Cross Ange
Robotics;Notes
And many, many, many more. If I missed any series on here that you think should have been mentioned here that was also missing in the original An Abbreviated History of Mecha, please let me know.

My Ideal Super Robot Wars Lineup
As a mecha fan, the SRW franchise is one of my favorite video game franchises, bringing together characters and mecha across different series to franchises to fight side-by-side with incredible JAM Project music. I've played a lot of games in the franchise over the years, including the original Game Boy game and the latest entry SRW 30.
All thay said, there are obviously series that I LOVE when they're included and make an entry a must play if I can (Gunbuster, my love), so what would be my ideal SRW series line-up?
Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury☆
After War Gundam X
Turn A Gundam
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
SDF Macross Do You Remember Love?
Macross Frontier
Zone of the Enders☆
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars ☆
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner ☆
Tekkaman Blade
Mazinkaiser
Shin Getter Robo Armageddon
Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
Aim for the Top! Diebuster
Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time☆
King of Braves GaoGaiGar
King of Braves GaoGaiGar FINAL
Super Beast Machine God Dancouga
Magic Knight Rayearth
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Hades Project Zeorymer
This is basically a combination of my favorite mecha shows and some stuff that I just love the mecha from (Zeorymer is an AWFUL show but the mechs are cool and the theme is a banger). How would these all fit together? To be honest I haven't thought that deeply about it. There are definitely characters I want to see interact (Suletta/Garrod/Loran/Domon/Noriko/Nono/Hikaru) and outcomes I'd love to see changed (looking at you, Gurren Lagann) and while G-Witch and Thrice Upon a Time are inevitable, Zone of the Enders is probably a pipe dream I'd love to see come true. Especially if it included The Fist of Mars, which was an SRW-styled SRPG set between ZOE 1 and 2 that was my introduction to the franchise.
#super robot wars#mecha#honestly getting half on these in any single srw is already a win#if I got all of them I might die and go to mecha heaven#and hang out with Musashi and Kamina

There are characters I do like that can pull off the “greater good” angle.
Shu from Super Robot Wars basically acted as a complete bastard so that the evil god he was linked to wouldn't be aware of what he was doing, but he was preparing the heroes for greater threats and his death was part of that. It allowed Shu to be revived, albeit without his memories but his plan kept that in mind as he planned to regain them, and because he had died the evil god was no longer connected to him. He was then able to take the power of that god, use it to improve his personal mecha the Granzon into the Neo Granzon, and kill that god so that he could finally be free. And from there, he becomes more of an ally to the heroes against those threats he was preparing them for.
His mech also plays homage to Hades Project Zeorymer, and his battle theme kicks ass.
