Zebedee and Edward met when they were 15/16 years old. Zebedee had grown up in a family that worked for the famous shipbuilding company Cammell Laird on the banks of the Mersey in Birkenhead, Liverpool. Zebedee also started working at Cammell Laird, but when his employer asked for volunteer tugs to go work at Barrow Shipbuilding Company - later known as Vickers - on a collaborative job, he volunteered to go. He went with a handful of Cammell Laird tugs, including his uncle (with whom he stayed).

Meanwhile, Edward was growing up with a reputation for being a mischievous prankster. Because of this, she was regularly punished by being sent to work shunting in the goods yard. Ironically, Edward learned that she loved this work, but was clever enough to keep this to herself and would deliberately get into trouble to go there.

The goods yard backs onto the shipbuilding company. While there, Edward, in another rebellious act, became acquainted with the tugs she saw - including Zoanna, a Scottish railway tug.

When Zebedee came to Barrow-in-Furness, he eventually came to meet the chatty little engine in the goods yard. Given she was his age, they started talking more and developed a real friendship.

Looking back, both will tell you this was love at first sight, but given that engines and tugs did not mix, they did not realise this for some time
