it is pretty disappointing to read about conservation efforts in the USA vs. many countries in, say, Africa or many tropical regions of the globe, because it feels like Americans really don't appreciate or notice the value of their animals and ecosystems.
It is really ENCOURAGING to see how much progress is made with conservation around the world, but it casts the USA's ecosystems in a sad light. Red states' governments are largely totally indifferent to preserving their ecosystems, even though some of the reddest states have the most biodiverse and globally unique ecosystems. It's individual people organizing that's doing so much of the work
It's like Americans understand why it's important to save lions, tigers, elephants and zebras, but when it comes to cougars, bison, wapiti and wolves, it's like "Ehhhhh" and caring about them at all makes you a liberal commie.
anyway it feels like reintroducing wolves, bison etc. to historical parts of their range should be more of a priority and it's not and it makes me sad

The Hyena getting driven out by Merry when they didn't need to be would just leave a bad taste in my mouth
They're whole communities too, with families and children, they deserve to live on the land and eat just as much as the lions do
Just because we don't see much of the hyenas doesn't mean they're just mindless creatures that deserve to be driven out for trying to live
Personally not a fan of when media portrays predators as bad or vicious for just doing what they have to
Yeah I bet it's scary for the lions when hyenas attack them, but I bet it's also scary for zebras when lions attack them, doesn't mean the lions deserve to be thrown out
Which is why I prefer villains like Edge and his family in these sorts of media, they're not doing these things to survive, they're doing it for power and control which yknow IS pretty bad and not just something they gotta do
Sorry for the rant
Exactly.
I'd also like to say that just because you perceive a community as evil or dangerous, it doesn't give you the right to demand that they be driven out of their ancestral home like Vicious demanded.
Lions are not innocent in their relationship with hyenas. They won't hesitate to kill hyena cubs - which the hyenas had in abundance vs. Cheerful and Bold, who were subadults by this point - and they will viciously defend carcasses from hyenas that they don't even intend on fully eating out of pure territoriality.
Yes, Clever did not feel safe having Cheerful and Bold around them but that's good ol' bias at play here. Chances are the hyenas may not have harmed them at all. We just don't know. Perhaps some of the hyenas felt the same way towards the lions as Vicious did towards them. Perhaps not.
We just don't know and that's what makes this whole thing tragic. That these two groups of animals share core values of survival and looking out for their family and yet they end up on the brink of war with each other for no reason other than an inability to communicate with each other and co-exist. Which is how Merry saw it and why he tried to his best to mediate. - RJ

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Tumblr media
So I believe I've already mentioned the reoccuring trend with Dreamworks franchises where the second movie of any given franchise of theirs is usually on par with quality of the first movie or even better, and I would say that certainly rings true for good ol Madagascar 2 here. In that it's on par with the first movie, though I'm not sure I'd call it better... Let's get into it.
Tumblr media
We pick up with our squad of lovable animals leaving Madagascar, only to crash land in the African Savannah. There, Alex reunites with his parents, Marty finds a whole flock of zebras just like him, and Melman and Gloria start to realize they have feelings for each other. Meanwhile we have the Penguins trying to fix up their plane and King Julian being, well King Julian. There are a lot of subplots floating around here, but I think they're all pretty engaging! Alex is clearly the focus this time around, while the first movie focused more on Marty, and the arc Alex goes through here is actually really engaging (and wow, another Dreamworks protagonist with some daddy issues, another trend we really get in this era of Dreamworks imo)
Tumblr media
All of our favorites from last time around are back and just as funny as they were in the first movie. There aren't too many new characters, though the ones who are here are pretty fun, such as Alex's parents. Unlike the last movie, this one actually has a genuine antagonist in Makunga, and well, he's just Scar. Like, there's a lot of elements from this movie lifted from Lion King and Makunga is really just a lamer version of Scar. He's ok. Nowhere near as based as our other standout "antagonist" here, the crazy old lady from the first movie.
Tumblr media
The comedy is once again exceptionally on point. Lots of fast-paced physical humor mixed with whitty jokes and humor that comes naturally out of the characters strong personalities and how they interact with each other. I would say that the emotions ring a little stronger in this movie than the first one actually, with the heavy focus on Alex reconnecting with his family and on Gloria and Melman's surprisingly well done romance. Marty has the weakest arc out of our main four, but we still get some decent moments of friendship between him and Alex, which is a nice way to harken back to the first movie.
Tumblr media
The animation here is also very smooth, again focused on that fast-paced brand of humor this series is known for, with a solid score that works to carry both the emotions and comedy through very nicely. Dreamworks has really hit their stride in this era of their existance, and this movie, despite its status as a sequel, is a pretty good testament to that.
So yeah, Escape 2 Africa is pretty great! I had a blast watching it again after all these years, and I really do enjoy watching this zany band of characters and their wacky adventures. Granted, I've never seen the third installment of this franchise, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if it maintains that level of quality moving forward. But as for this one, it's well worth watching.
Overall Rating: 8/10
Verdict: Moto Moto is comin' for you

Note
Shadow Colors "racism" has the same problem that Zootopia has, using prey vs predator as a way to symbolize racism
the problem with this kind of metaphor is that, unlike real life, there's a reason for predators to be feared, the prey animals have a point
And Mel in that script... it's something, the wolf character killing the sheep character communicates to the viewer that "oooh so we should descriminate and fear all wolfs because the only ones we've seen are crazy violent people" (Dominik especially, but Lucy too)
Yeah, it's. Pretty fuckin' weird, but then again, it gets confusing because while what you are saying is true, there's also the real life stuff on how animals can be predators to other predators, and there's also the fact that prey animals are more likely to attack you unprovoked and more aggressively than the predator, then finally, the food chain that comes to predator becoming prey.
It's like this, lions can be considered predators, but zebras can literally knock a lion out with a kick of their legs from the force being used, and a giraffe can break a lion's neck and kill it instantly. Mind you, zebra and giraffe are prey animals, but can be more, or just as dangerous as the predator animals because they attack out of self defense and much more aggression.
Sheep are completely defenseless to wolves, so Dominik killing "Old Boss" is basically correct because Sheep can't defend themselves, but wolves can be hunted and if food sources are low for other predators like polar bears, grizzly bears, black bears, and siberian tigers, they'll definitely take the opportunity to kill a wolf if they get the chance, so if there's any in the factory, Dominik would be very royally fucked.
But yeah, regardless of the IRL stuff, Old Boss actually is basically an asshole that has a mindset of "all predators are inherently bad and violent, therefore I should treat them lesser than me because they're a different species unrelated to prey", but Dominik and Lucy... Yeah, very bad implications because it implies that all of wolves/canines are bad.

You have to project all that conflict tho. Woman vs. Thirst. Woman vs. Machine. The story could just as easily be narrated, “She pressed a button on the vending machine just for fun, but unexpectedly a soda came out! There was a guy sitting nearby. She gave the soda to him.”
I think it’s possible to turn any story into a conflict (Hirohito Araki has a very fun book about writing shonen manga where he says that his process is to write every situation as a “fight”, and that’s how you get a whole chapter about high stakes competitive etiquette), but I don’t think a story can’t exist without conflict. It might not be very interesting without conflict, but it’s still, like, a story?
Consider a little kid telling you about a trip. “I went to the zoo. First, I saw zebras. Then I saw lions. Then I saw gorillas. Then I ate ice cream and went home!” That’s a whole ass story with a beginning, middle, and end. Without obstacles or unmet needs, etc. You could manufacture some conflict in there but by itself it still qualifies for a “cool story, kid!”
im about to maul someone.

Affordable Masai Mara Tour Packages: Budget-Friendly Safari Adventures
The allure of the Masai Mara lies in its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. For many, embarking on a safari here is a dream come true. But did you know that this dream can be realized without breaking the bank? In this guide, we'll explore how you can experience the wonders of the Masai Mara through budget-friendly safari adventures.
Tumblr media
What Makes the Masai Mara Special?
The Masai Mara, located in southwestern Kenya, is renowned for its stunning savannahs and diverse ecosystems. It's home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including the famous Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. One of the most spectacular events in the animal kingdom, the Great Migration, occurs here annually. During this time, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores traverse the plains, followed closely by predators—a spectacle that draws tourists from all over the world.
Beyond the wildlife, the Masai Mara offers rich cultural experiences with the indigenous Maasai people. Visitors can learn about their traditional way of life, from unique dress and dances to intricate beadwork and customs.
Why Consider Budget-Friendly Safari Adventures?
While the Masai Mara is often associated with luxury lodges and expensive safaris, there are numerous budget-friendly options available. Affordable travel not only makes this incredible experience accessible to a wider audience but also allows for longer stays and more immersive adventures. Contrary to popular belief, a budget safari doesn't mean compromising on quality; it simply means making smart choices.
Tumblr media
Key Features of Budget Masai Mara Tour Packages
Budget tour packages typically include basic yet comfortable accommodations, meals, and guided game drives. Depending on the package, transportation from Nairobi or nearby cities might also be included. While luxury extras such as private vehicles or gourmet meals may not be part of the deal, these packages still provide an authentic and enriching safari experience.
Types of Budget Accommodations in the Masai Mara
When it comes to budget accommodations, the Masai Mara offers several options:
Camping Options
For the truly adventurous, camping is a fantastic way to stay close to nature. Campsites are often located within the park or on its outskirts, offering a raw and immersive experience. They range from basic facilities to more equipped setups with tents and bedding.
Budget Lodges
These lodges provide a step up from camping, with more amenities such as hot showers and comfortable beds. They are often situated in prime wildlife viewing areas, offering a great balance of comfort and affordability.
Community Campsites
Run by local communities, these campsites offer a unique opportunity to support local development while enjoying your stay. They often feature traditional Maasai-style accommodations and allow guests to engage with the local culture.
Choosing the Right Time to Visit
Timing your visit to the Masai Mara can greatly impact both your experience and your budget:
High Season vs. Low Season
The high season, typically from July to October, coincides with the Great Migration and offers the best wildlife viewing. However, it's also the most expensive time to visit. The low season, from April to June, offers lower rates and fewer tourists, making it an excellent option for budget travelers.
Weather Considerations
The Masai Mara has two main rainy seasons: the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (November). While the rains can make some roads impassable, they also bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds.
Top Budget-Friendly Activities in the Masai Mara
Even on a budget, there's no shortage of exciting activities to enjoy:
Game Drives
Game drives are the cornerstone of any safari. Budget packages typically include shared game drives, where you'll join other guests in a vehicle. It's a fantastic way to see the park's wildlife up close.
Walking Safaris
For a more intimate experience with nature, consider a walking safari. Led by experienced guides, these walks offer insights into the smaller details of the ecosystem, like tracks and plants.
Balloon Safaris on a Budget
While hot air balloon safaris are often considered a luxury, some operators offer more affordable options during off-peak times. It's an unforgettable way to see the vastness of the Masai Mara from above.
Exploring the Local Culture
A visit to the Masai Mara isn't complete without experiencing the rich culture of the Maasai people:
Visiting Maasai Villages
Many tours include visits to local villages, where you can learn about Maasai traditions and daily life. It's a wonderful opportunity to purchase handmade crafts directly from the artisans.
Cultural Performances and Crafts
Enjoy traditional dances and songs performed by the Maasai. These cultural exchanges are not only entertaining but also educational.
Ethical Considerations
When engaging with local communities, it's important to be respectful and mindful of their traditions. Supporting ethical tourism practices ensures that your visit has a positive impact.
Tips for Saving Money on Your Safari
Saving money doesn't mean skimping on experience. Here are some tips to make the most of your budget:
Booking Strategies
Booking in advance can often secure better rates. Look for package deals that combine accommodation, meals, and activities.
Group Tours vs. Private Tours
Joining a group tour can significantly reduce costs compared to private tours. It's also a great way to meet fellow travelers.
Off-Peak Travel Advantages
Traveling during the shoulder or low seasons can result in significant savings. You'll also enjoy a more peaceful experience with fewer tourists.
Sample Itinerary for a Budget Masai Mara Safari
Here's a sample itinerary to give you an idea of what a budget safari might look like:
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Masai Mara
Early morning departure from Nairobi
Afternoon game drive upon arrival
Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive
Morning and afternoon game drives
Visit a Maasai village in the evening
Day 3: Optional Activities and Departure
Early morning walking safari
Return to Nairobi
Safety and Health Considerations
Ensuring your safety and well-being is crucial during any safari:
Staying Safe During the Safari
Always follow your guide's instructions, especially when close to wildlife. Keep a safe distance from animals and avoid sudden movements.
Health Precautions and Vaccinations
Before traveling, consult with a healthcare provider about necessary vaccinations. Malaria prevention measures, such as taking antimalarial medication and using insect repellent, are recommended.
Travel Insurance Tips
Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. Make sure it covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and any adventurous activities you plan to undertake.
What to Pack for a Budget Safari
Packing smartly can enhance your safari experience:
Essential Gear and Clothing
Lightweight, neutral-colored clothing is best for blending in with the surroundings. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Photography Equipment
A good camera with a zoom lens is ideal for capturing wildlife. Binoculars are also useful for spotting distant animals.
Personal Items and Essentials
Bring necessary medications, a reusable water bottle, and a small first aid kit. Cash in small denominations can be handy for tips and purchases.
Sustainable Travel Practices
Being a responsible traveler is key to preserving the Masai Mara's beauty:
Supporting Local Communities
Choose tour operators and accommodations that support local communities. Buying local crafts and tipping guides fairly helps the local economy.
Eco-Friendly Travel Tips
Minimize waste by using reusable items and disposing of trash properly. Respect wildlife and natural habitats by staying on designated paths.
Minimizing Your Footprint
Use water sparingly and be mindful of energy consumption. Small actions can make a big difference in preserving the environment.

Unlocking the Wonders of Masai Mara Safaris: A Comprehensive Guide
Embark on a journey where the savannah comes alive with the rhythmic dance of the wild. Welcome to Masai Mara, an enchanting realm where nature's drama unfolds in all its majesty. As you plan your adventure into the heart of Kenya's wilderness, you're likely brimming with questions: Is Masai Mara truly superior to Serengeti? What's the cost of experiencing this safari paradise? And, crucially, when is the best time to witness its breathtaking beauty? Let's embark on a safari of knowledge as we uncover the answers to these inquiries and more.
Tumblr media
Masai Mara vs. Serengeti: A Tale of Two Iconic Safaris: Embarking on an African safari is a dream for many travelers, and two destinations frequently vie for the spotlight: Masai Mara and Serengeti. As you plan your adventure into the heart of East Africa's wilderness, you might find yourself pondering the age-old question: Which is better, Serengeti or Masai Mara? Let's delve into the nuances of each destination to uncover the answer to this captivating debate.
The Majesty of Masai Mara: Nestled in southwestern Kenya, Masai Mara is a sanctuary of natural splendor, renowned for its sweeping savannahs, abundant wildlife, and iconic landscapes. Here, the rhythm of life unfolds in mesmerizing fashion, offering visitors an immersive safari experience like no other.
Masai Mara is synonymous with the Great Migration, a monumental event where millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles traverse its plains in search of greener pastures. Witnessing this awe-inspiring spectacle is a bucket-list moment for many safari enthusiasts, as the Mara River becomes a stage for nature's drama, complete with heart-pounding river crossings and predator-prey interactions.
Beyond the Great Migration, Masai Mara boasts an impressive resident wildlife population, including the Big Five and a myriad of other species. From thrilling game drives to intimate bush walks and exhilarating hot air balloon safaris, there's no shortage of ways to explore this captivating ecosystem.
Tumblr media
The Splendor of Serengeti: Across the border in Tanzania lies Serengeti National Park, a vast expanse of wilderness that captivates with its boundless horizons, diverse ecosystems, and legendary wildlife sightings. Serengeti's name, derived from the Maasai word meaning "endless plains," perfectly encapsulates the park's vastness and sense of timeless beauty.
Serengeti is renowned for its role in the Great Migration, serving as the stage for the wildebeest's epic journey as they traverse its grassy plains in search of food and water. The park's varied landscapes, from acacia-dotted savannahs to rocky kopjes and wooded riverine forests, provide the perfect backdrop for wildlife photography and exploration.
In addition to the Great Migration, Serengeti offers year-round wildlife viewing opportunities, with iconic species such as lions, elephants, and cheetahs roaming its plains. Whether embarking on a classic game drive, tracking wildlife on foot, or witnessing a golden Serengeti sunrise from a hot air balloon, visitors are treated to an unforgettable safari experience.
The Verdict: Masai Mara vs. Serengeti So, which safari destination reigns supreme? The answer ultimately depends on your preferences, interests, and priorities.
Masai Mara captivates with its abundance of wildlife, particularly during the Great Migration, and offers a range of activities to suit every traveler's taste. Its proximity to Nairobi makes it easily accessible, while its diverse landscapes provide a rich tapestry of experiences.
Serengeti, on the other hand, enchants with its vastness, varied landscapes, and legendary wildlife sightings. While the Great Migration is undoubtedly a highlight, Serengeti's year-round appeal ensures an unforgettable safari experience at any time of year.
In the end, whether you choose Masai Mara or Serengeti, one thing is certain: you're in for an adventure of a lifetime. So pack your bags, embark on your safari journey, and prepare to be dazzled by the wonders of East Africa's wilderness.
Tumblr media
Cost Considerations: Making Your Masai Mara Dream a Reality: One of the most common queries among safari-goers is the cost associated with experiencing the wonders of Masai Mara. While the price can vary depending on various factors such as accommodation, duration, and activities, it's essential to budget accordingly to ensure a memorable and stress-free adventure.
On average, a Masai Mara safari package can range from $150 to $700 per person per day, encompassing accommodation, meals, transportation, and game drives. Luxury lodges and tented camps offer unparalleled comfort and personalized service, albeit at a higher price point. Alternatively, budget-friendly options such as camping safaris provide a more affordable yet equally immersive experience.
Additionally, it's worth considering the time of year when planning your Masai Mara safari, as prices can fluctuate based on peak seasons and special events. During the Great Migration from July to October, demand for accommodations tends to surge, leading to higher prices. Conversely, visiting during the shoulder seasons of November to June may offer more competitive rates while still providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Ultimately, the cost of a Masai Mara safari is a worthy investment in creating lifelong memories and experiencing the magic of Africa's wilderness firsthand.
Tumblr media
Choosing the Perfect Time: Deciphering the Best Month for Masai Mara Safaris: Timing is everything when it comes to embarking on a Masai Mara safari, as each month offers a unique glimpse into the natural rhythms of the savannah. To maximize your wildlife sightings and overall safari experience, it's crucial to understand the seasonal patterns that shape Masai Mara's landscape.
The Great Migration, undoubtedly one of nature's most spectacular phenomena, takes center stage from July to October as millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores make their perilous journey across the Mara River in search of greener pastures. Witnessing this epic spectacle is a bucket-list moment for many safari enthusiasts, making these months the prime time to visit Masai Mara.
For those seeking quieter surroundings and more affordable rates, the months of November to June offer a tranquil escape to Masai Mara's wilderness. During this period, the savannah is lush and green following the seasonal rains, creating a picturesque backdrop for wildlife photography and exploration. While the Great Migration may have subsided, the resident wildlife remains abundant, ensuring exceptional game viewing opportunities year-round.
Ultimately, the best time to visit Masai Mara depends on your preferences and interests. Whether you long to witness the drama of the Great Migration or prefer a quieter, more intimate safari experience, there's no shortage of magic to be found amidst the golden plains of Masai Mara.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: As the sun sets over the vast expanse of Masai Mara, painting the sky with hues of orange and gold, one thing becomes abundantly clear – this wilderness is a realm of timeless beauty and boundless wonder. Whether you're drawn to the thrill of the hunt on a game drive, the serenity of a sunset bush dinner, or the awe-inspiring sight of a lioness and her cubs, Masai Mara promises an adventure like no other.
So, as you embark on your journey into the heart of Kenya's wilderness, armed with knowledge and anticipation, prepare to be captivated by the magic of Masai Mara. With its unrivaled wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and unparalleled safari experiences, this iconic destination invites you to unlock the secrets of Africa's untamed beauty – one safari drive at a time.

Honestly this makes me think of something which happened in Kansas back about 20 or so years ago.
This lady hit a mountain lion with her car.
Now, that wasn't the really problematic part. Sure, it's not great to be hitting a big cat with your car; bad for the vehicle, worse for the animal.
But then she called 911 because what the actual fuck?
Officially, there were no mountain lions in Kansas. They were hunted to extinction there something like a century ago. This would have been the first mountain lion sighting in Kansas since 1904.
So, the 911 operator argues with her. Tells her to get out of her car and take a closer look. It's definitely a deer. This goes on for quite a bit. The woman is describing it, how she can see the long tail and the cat ears and the paws. You know, because it's a cat. And the operator insisting she is seeing things, there are hooves, not paws, there is no long tail, and deer have pointy ears. Just get out of the car and look!
Eventually animal control comes out and... it's a mountain lion.
And that's the thing about the horses vs. zebras thing.
Because, first, some people are so absolutely dead-set that it's a horse and there are no zebras that they will risk someone's life on the complete faith that there are no zebras at all ever. They will reject any evidence to the contrary.
Second, there is an absolutely infuriating bias; they don't listen to you when you say a thing, those words have to come out of someone else's mouth. If you tell a doctor that you have this rare symptom or already tried a treatment, they will not believe you; but if another doctor (or a less flustered/emotional/affected person, which is worse) say it, then it's a thing. But this can be so fucking frustrating in a medical setting because you end up having to be a performer jumping through the same damned hoops over and over because you just got referred to a new doctor and they won't listen when you explain you already did a course of prednisolone or antibiotics, you've gotta waste another month on that treatment so the new doctor feels like they've tried it.
And the reality is, zebras do exist, but sometimes the hardest part is convincing the supposed zebra expert that they're real, or at least that the non-horse thing is in fact not a horse.
Regarding the 'Doctors' Saying':* "If you hear hoof-beats, look for a horse, not a zebra."
Okay, fine. But if someone calls you and says: "There's a zebra in my front yard," don't just tell them "Actually, you're wrong. That's a horse," and hang up.
At least call around and see if there's a zoo nearby, or a visiting circus, and ask if they've had any animals escape, lately. And maybe ask them to double-check.
*As I've heard reported by the Elhers-Danlos Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome communities.
