I always take progress pics of my work because, well, I think they’re awesome. I particularly love progress pics because they illustrate the process of manifesting an idea into reality. How cool is that? It’s like you’re a deity with the power to create whatever you decide! No limits! Anyway, I think we all put too much stock into the snapshot moments of people crossing the finish lines of life. It’s easy to hype up these moments because victors walk away with all kinds of trophies: money, houses, cars, fame, etc. However, I think we should refocus our attention on the years of practice, discipline, and drive that preceded those epic moments and allowed them to happen in the first place. I have always hated what I’ve created. Truth be told, I still do. My natural inclination is to not share my work because it doesn’t meet my standards. But I choose to keep creating because each piece teaches me something I didn’t know before, and if I want to get to where I want to be skill-wise, I will ultimately have to make a lot more airballs before I can swish. “Penelope” I have been on a mission to make each piece better than the last by: studying anatomy, creating more compelling compositions, trying out cooler perspectives, and of course, coming up with personality-filled characters. That being said, a large portion of my sketchbook is covered with line-art. Intention and focus are the names of this game. There is no room for wasted marks. Each line must serve a purpose and make the piece as a whole inteligible for the onlookers within seconds of viewing it. Each line has to be tight - the pressure I apply to my pen, how well I capture any and all curves, and a certain level of restraint are all aspects I have to keep in the forefront of my mind. I get particularly excited about pieces like this one. I’m, first and foremost, a cartoonist at heart. Developing an original style takes time, but the feeling of getting closer to understanding your own voice and perspective is second to none. Character design is particularly fun, and I plan to do so much more of that. However, I’m also looking forward to enhancing the storytelling element to my future pieces, as well as more dynamic backgrounds and perspectives. Sometimes I’ll prefer a sketch, a thumbnail of a storyboard, or a piece of my concept art over a fully rendered final draft. Why is that? A sketchbook grants the artist permission to experiment and make ugly and unconventional markings; to be free with our lines. It begs for 100s of attempts and do-overs, instead of a single ‘work of art’. It prioritizes discovery and instructs the artist to push through their comfort zones. When we try to replicate the hidden gems we draw, the pressure to recreate it on a whim can become paralyzing. The only way to overcome this is with practice. Soon, you’ll have more works you’re happy with than not. In life, we make our own marks with the words we speak, the thoughts we choose to dwell on, and the way we treat others. When you make a less than ideal move, don’t sweat it. Art to me is typically about intent, realization of concept, & the artist’s voice. I think it’s important to remember, however, that none of it truly matters if the process isn’t enjoyable. I named this piece “URESHII” (or Happiness) because I had a lot of fun creating it. Simple. I pushed my usual criteria to the side and decided to see what I’d produce without any of my typical parameters. Just pure, unadulterated fun.
