No more drought!?

I’m pretty sure we can all agree that California was not made for rain. At least in Riverside, when it rains - it pours. Not only that but it also floods, rains sideways, and for multiple days at a time. On the plus side, we’re not the only city in California that has been experiencing this crazy weather and for some, the storms have even taken them out of their drought!

According to californiadrought.org the rainy season this year is known as “La Nina” since “El Nino” didn’t really make an appearance last year. The drought monitor has been carefully tracking the precipitation in California and currently 39% of the state is drought free. In the areas that had extreme drought, the percentage dropped from 41% to 2% in just two months! And on February 7th, the San Diego County Water Authority stated that the region is finally drought-free! This announcement short follows the reveal of the Bay Area also being out of their drought as well. Which makes sense since the city of San Jose was flooded all last week.

While the rain is getting this dry city back into a healthier climate, it’s not solving all of our problems. In fact, it’s even caused some. Areas have been flooded and people have had to evacuate their homes. There have also been several dams that have been reported to spill over or leak. And it has caused many accidents during the daily commutes - since California people don’t know how to drive in the rain of course.

Now the question is - how long will this rainy season last? And will the effects of the storm last long enough to keep California out of an extreme drought? Once summer arrives, temperatures will rise. Can we expect any summer thunderstorms or will the sun shine the clouds away? Riverside is already expected to creep up into the 80’s this week! And with daylight saving around the corner, we can expect longer days, warmer nights and less rain. Here’s to hoping all of California’s hard work to get out of the drought isn’t all for nothing!
