In time, the visions gave purpose to his travels. He would preach heretical ideas no one else had dared to entertain, let alone risk discussing. He distributed his message intelligently, careful to preach only to those receptive, never attracting unwelcome attention.

You already know I’m picturing this philosophy of peace as an endless series of Vantas Rants.

Honestly, this strategically displayed frustration is exactly what I’d expect from an older, wiser Karkat - one who’d finally found a cause worth yelling for. Even though this isn’t actually Karkat, I’m still weirdly proud of him for the person he could have been, had the need arose.

The highbloods were livid over the unprecedented heresy, and soon, a massive sectarian war followed, spreading across the planet and throughout the galaxy.

Hell yeah, Vantas! Scratch may be assured of victory here, but make the motherfucker work for it!

Inevitably, the Signless would be captured, and when he was, it was not a matter of whether he would be put to the irons, but how hot they would be if he failed to recant.

And that’s the story of Karkat’s sign. It symbolizes the shackles of his species – shackles which his ancestor fought to break, right up until his dying breath.

Now that is a metal sign, in every possible sense of the word.

Under the green moon, all hope will rot.

And that’s a color we know all too well.

We know that Zahhak defied the highbloods, and lived in disgrace, so I think this may have been a mercy kill...

...but I don't think that's the whole story, because there’s a third character in this sad tale.

Arslan Senki Chapter 128 (Part 1)

We've finally reached it. The Worst Coronation Ceremony in the World. As I'd hoped would be the case, it's a split chapter, with the first half sticking with Team Arslan before the second half moves to Ecbatana to focus on Team Hilmes.

The chapter opens with the gang sitting around a campfire.

An owl... Do Team Zahhak have someone watching them? Are we going to see that someone report back to the Master soon about how Prince Arslan now has Rukhnabad? Yeah sometimes an owl is just an owl but this really has Team Zahhak vibes.

Arslan trying to ask Don Ricardo to hand Rukhnabad to him, realising he doesn't speak Parsian, and then... managing to speak some fragmented Lusitanian? 👌 I love that he's been learning this and is willing to try instead of just asking Estelle to translate.

Who wouldn't immediately hand over the sword that saved your life upon seeing this face, amirite?

(Obviously, it worked. Totally disarmed, Don Ricardo gives Arslan the sword.)

Anyway now we have RUKHNABAD PLOT TWIST, because Arslan can't draw the sword. And while he's all 'welp, looks like I don't have the right to wield it!' Gieve is absolutely fucking enraged by the fact that Hilmes could draw the sword and yet Arslan can't. Gieve = not the greatest fan of Kaykhusraw's judgement, lmao.

The next section is interesting. After things are briefly disrupted by the tremors of an earthquake that soon dies down, discussion continues, and despite Arslan's recognition that his bloodline gives him no right to the throne, he's not backing down.

This panel... The fact that the (harmless) earthquake started up right when Gieve was trashtalking Kaykhusraw, lmao. Feels like the Hero King's spirit was putting Gieve in his place, ahaha.

The fact that he says this while looking down at Rukhnabad... I think this panel is conveying not only that he's not prepared to give it (and Pars) up to anyone else even if they can wield it and he can't, but also that the sword's function as a (protective) object of importance to Pars is more important than having it in his possession.

Is it possible that he will try and return the sword to Kaykhusraw's mausoleum instead? Sure, Zahhak is out already but maybe it will quell the earthquakes. This would set up nicely for a scene that is the inverse of Hilmes taking Rukhnabad from the sarcophagus, where Arslan instead tries to replace it and in the process of doing so proves himself worthy of wielding it.

And if Team Arslan try to place it in the sarcophagus itself (assuming they can still access it after the big earthquake back then?) they'll see the absence of Kaykhusraw's body and understand it has become a vessel for Zahhak.

(I feel like I want that realisation saved for Hilmes, though. He's seen Kaykhusraw's remains before, and I want him to see them again and realise what he's done... Sure, multiple parties can come to the same conclusion but I feel like that would be a great one off moment of 'oh FUCK')

Skaa have no last name on Scadrialternia, except for ferrings who can also be referred to as "Terrisborn"

He is part of the Skaa Pure Caste, the highest of the Skaa. Deemed the most Pure out of the Skaa for not bringing down the Terris or Noble bloodlines by being in them. Sollux, of course, says "fuck that" and gets Allomancy anyway. It was an accident, but he's going to make the most of it.

The chat client they use is called Palpuller. His Pullhandle is tidalArmaments. Tidal refers to his ability to Pull and Push on metal objects, including weapons. His ability to turn basically any metal into a weapon is where he got Armaments from.

His typing quirk has not changed from canon, but his symbol is what you get by overlaying the symbol for Steel with the symbol for Iron.

He was born without potential for the Metallic Arts (univested) but then took two Hemlurgic spikes charged with Iron and Steel Allomancy to the eyes in a freak accident involving a "jaiilbroken beehiive". I have no idea how that happened because there are no mind bees on Scadrialternia and also bees arent technological in nature. The bees of course, don't care about what I think is possible, and deem that Sollux is the expert, and not I. so whatever, I guess...

He now has to hide from the Drones (that serve a function in the empire similar to Steel Inquisitors) by essentially becoming a hermit off in the woods. He can easily get around using his Allomancy, but most folk freak out when they see him on account of the two steel spikes jutting from his eyes, so he usually just stays in the shadows and such. I'm not sure how Ruin and Preservation fit into this yet, but Vriska's destiny spike leads her to get Sollux into a destructive state of mind, and he goes to lay Ruin to Aradia's house and nearly kill her. Afterwards, he goes and gets Equius to "fuckiing fiix her riight fuckiing now" with Hemalurgy, and he listens mostly because they all determine it was Vriska's Destiny spike that led her to spur all this, and Equius kind of feels like its his fault.

It is unknown what her original misting ability was, but the spike from Equius gave her the other one

Tavros Nitram - Cadmium Ferring

Feruchemy: Gasper (Cadmium: Breath), “Bloodmaker” (Gold: Health)

Hemalurgy: Gold (Between Ribs: Gold Feruchemy)

Cadmium compounder; Vriska makes fun of him for having a ‘useless ability’, but doesn’t see the potential that storing breath has. Equius provides him with healing powers to fix his legs through hemalurgy.

Sollux Captor - Born powerless

Allomancy: “Coinshot” (Steel: Push metal) “Lurcher” (Iron: Pull metal)

Hemalurgy: Steel X2 (Left and Right Orbit: Iron and Steel Allomancy)

These spikes were not given by Equius, but instead were applied in a “freak acciident” involving a “jaiilbroken beehiive”.

Karkat Vantas - Copper/Duralumin Twinborn (mutant)

Allomancy: Smoker (Copper: Hide Allomancy)

Feruchemy: Connector (Duralumin: Connection)

I’m not exactly sure why being a natural twin-born is bad in Scadrialternian society, but it is and Karkat’s gotta hide it. Also the castes follow a natural Misting-Ferring-Powerless-Misting-Ferring-Powerless pattern, and Karkat’s caste breaks that so it was completely eradicated through eugenics so im pretty sure he’s the only one.

Nepeta Leijon - Steel Ferring

Feruchemy: Steelrunner (Steel: Physical Speed)

Nothing special, just run-of-the-steel-mill feruchemy.

Kanaya Maryam - Chromium Misting

Allomancy: Leecher (Chromium: wipe allomantic reserves of target)

Her caste is supposed to be powerless, like Equius', but much like how she's a rainbow drinker in canon, she is somehow a misting in this AU. Snapped after Eridan shot her half to death with his “poison wwand strike” (toxic chromium bullets). He did not know that these bullets were Allomantically viable, and neither knew that she would be able to burn chromium. She uses this to sap Gamzee of his massive Zinc reserves, causing him to be distracted long enough for her to kill Eridan.

Terezi Pyrope - Tin misting - Tin Savant

Allomancy: Scout (Tin: Increases senses)

Terezi and Gamzee are the only Savants on the team, which forms the basis of their bond and later kismesitude on whatever this au’s equivalent of the meteor is. She snapped during a feud with Vriska, which left her blind, but she has been flaring tin for so many sweeps that she can basically assemble visual data through her other senses.

Vriska Serket - Cadmium Ferring

Feruchemy: Spinner (Cadmium: Fortune)

Hemalurgy: Left Eye (Cadmium: Destiny)

Forced Equius to use Hemalurgy on her to heal her during a feud with Terezi, but she was tapping Fortune so hard that Equius managed to select the wrong spike and gave her Destiny instead of some healing ability, which is apparently good luck according to the spiritual realm? It’s destiny to be relevant forever I guess so she can’t really die until the plot demands it. She also has Kelsier’s weird metal vision allowing her to peep into the spiritual realm just a little bit. She ended up having her arm fully amputated due to her spirit not being able to accept another spike. Equius in this au isn’t exactly a roboticist, so she won’t get a replacement arm until wayy later down the line.

Equius Zahhak - born powerless

Allomancy: Thug (Pewter: Strength)

Hemalurgy: Between ribs (Steel: Allomantic pewter)

Equius is a Hemalurgist, who was born without allomancy or feruchemy (much like the rest of his caste). He gave himself pewter to make future hemalurgy easier for him (pushing spikes into/through people is physically intensive). He has also given powers to Aradia, Tavros, and Vriska so far.

Gamzee Makara - Zinc Rioter - Zinc Savant

Allomancy: Rioter (Zinc: Riot)

As a Zinc savant, he is so used to being able to fuck with people’s emotions on a whim that he has no idea how to handle empathy without it. He has a very carefree attitude because if someone is saying/doing something he doesn’t like, he can just Allomantic them away. This also means that everyone around him naturally swell with anger and frustration, which leads to the events of the meteor. Rioters and soothers can also gain control of hemalurgic constructs, so I imagine he could take over any hemalurgy users in the party at a whim.

Eridan Ampora - Electrum “Ferring” (Full Feruchemist)

Feruchemy: Pinnacle (Electrum: Determination)

Eridan, like others in his caste, is a full feruchemist, but unlike his other caste members, he only believes that he has one ability.

Feferi Peixes - Mistborn

Allomancy: Mistborn

Feferi, like all others in her caste, is a Mistborn. The Condese is too, actually.

Author commentary: Equius has a few things in common with Vriska. Not a lot, but enough to be worth noting. Though Equius is a notch higher on the hemospectrum, they're both blue- blooded aristocracy whose castes maintain both deep contempt for those lower and (especially in indigo cases) exceedingly high regard for those above. The fact that they're neighbors suggests there isn't that big a divide between blue and indigo in terms of status and daily life. Both classes probably cluster together somewhat in a kind of snobby symbiosis, since they're one notch below purple-blooded clown hell, which is a radically different kind of cultural aristocracy. And both are one notch above the jade and teal middling classes, which enjoy some status, but both castes revolve around more functional, municipal services such as breeding administration and law enforcement. But on just a character level, there are a couple echos here. Vriska obsessively breaks 8-balls in a way "bordering on fetishistic." Equius does the same with bows. Both for different reasons. For her, relating to her obsession and frustration with her luck. For him, obsession and frustration with his strength, something that he loves about himself but which prohibits him from doing another thing he loves. Fetishizing destruction and chaos for reasons along these lines is a theme that runs through this group, especially when you include Aradia's fixation on it as well.

Arslan Senki Chapter 103

(Yes, I’m late discussing this one, but I still want to post about it!)

Okay, I think I really am shipping Merlain and Estelle now. I dunno, I enjoy that kind of dynamic and I’m amused by the concept of Merlain having a particular ‘type’ and ending up with someone the complete opposite lmao

It’s been way too long since we saw Sam...

Guiscard’s also struggling to understand why Hilmes took Irina and naturally he’s considering how it might give Hilmes some sort of political leverage somewhere because he has no idea that there is an existing connection between them

Zandeh being tasked with holding the reins of Irina’s horse: A+!

(Also like the fact that they’re using a harness/collar so that Irina has something sturdy to hold on to!)

It kind of fills me with fear that Hilmes is aiming for Ecbatana rather than retreating to Zabul. He’s committing everything now, and there’s no going back; this is his bid for the future that he feels should be his. At the very least, if his plan succeeds then Ecbatana will be rid of the Lusitanians, but seeing that fervour in his expression never feels good.

I’d normally celebrate a Hilmes vs Lusitania victory, but the end of this chapter is beyond ominous, as we have Hilmes proclaiming his royal bloodline, traceable back to the Hero King Kaykhusraw, who he then beseeches to behold his deeds...

...and then we cut to Kaykhusraw’s damaged mausoleum, the sarcophagus open and empty, a trail of blood leading out of it, and then... well, you’ve all seen it. WTF.

Hilmes, I don’t necessarily think being of the royal bloodline is a good thing...

I have to admit that I do NOT remember this happening in the novels, and more than that, I couldn’t find any reference to it when I went to go and check (I usually do a quick comparison of each manga chapter with the corresponding scenes in the novels). Can anyone confirm whether it’s in there or not?

If it is original to the manga, it’s an interesting addition and I’m curious about where it’ll go.

(My guess: it won’t come to anything yet — perhaps that body is too decayed to last as a vessel, perhaps the spirit of Kaykhusraw fights back, or perhaps the Snake King is still too powerfully bound to be able to possess this body for long. I think this is intended to show us more about what conditions need to be met in order for Team Zahhak to succeed. But nonetheless, they’re getting close. I doubt this would have been possible before Hilmes removed Rukhnabad from the tomb!)

Aradia Medigo: Aradia was killed in a drone sweep, but before her soul could be whisked away into the afterlife, the Handmaid snatched her ghost out of time and, since then, she’s lived in the space between timelines as a spirit.

Tavros Nitram: Tavros was adopted by the Summoner, as well as Vriska Serket, and has grown to be extremely arrogant. although he still had his accident and is still reliant on a wheelchair, he has reached new heights in his control of animals and has a lot more fighting skills than he might have otherwise.

Sollux Captor: Sollux was taken from real time as a young wriggler by he Handmaid, who saw potential and what his timeline would possibly end in, and wanted to save him. he spends his time floating between times, halfway searching for a timeline not currently occupied by a Sollux for him to inject himself into while not wanting to leave his palemate, Aradia, in the ether alone.

Karkat Vantas: Karkat got adopted by the GHB and is now the worst person alive.

Nepeta Leijon: Nepeta was found in the forest by Darkleer, who had accidentally injured Pounce and felt responsible for caring for Nepeta until her lusus was well again, but got attached. Nepeta has never been to civilization and scavenges all her electronic goods from burned out cities or dumps.

Kanaya Maryam: being the ward of a virgin mothergrub, Kanaya was discovered and taken in by the jades in the caverns to protect her and the mothergrub. she’s been raised in the system and knows pretty much all the ins and outs, and is the matron of a rather large section of caverns.

Terezi Pyrope: after accidentally blinding herself in the sun, Terezi was miraculously found by none other than His Imperial Tyranny, who decided to keep her for her keen nose and potential to eventually learn to overtake him. she has no manners and no fear, because she’s been taught to eat anyone who opposes her.

Vriska Serket: Vriska was adopted by the Summoner, in memory of Mindfang, along with Tavros. she’s trained her abilities and physical strength, and grew up listening to first-hand accounts of her ancestor. she and Tavros have a contentious, competitive relationship and act similar to siblings.

Equius Zahhak: )(IC, the Empress, missed Darkleer, who she had shown special favor to in allowing to live but be banished because she had a vague, almost pale relationship with him. on finding a direct bloodline descendant of his, she took him in to at least take over as the E%ecutioner, and then quickly got attached. Equius is extremely spoiled, always wears some pink, and has probably never heard the word “no” in his life.

Gamzee Makara: Gamzee, after being abandoned by his lusus, began to eat sopor and fell off the face of the planet. On a whim, he recorded himself baking a sopor pie, and people liked it. He has since built a small empire of devoted fans, and self-identifies as a cam-clown. Though he has gotten clean, he still struggles with his addiction, and his status as a figure on GoreTube has made it hard for him to create deeper relationships with people.

Eridan Ampora: Because of his gills not developing properly, and other issues with his development, he was kept secretly by a group of elderly jadebloods who raised him like a prince at the edge of the sea in an old cavern. He has never heard the word no, but is also all-round considered a gentleman, and relies heavily on this. Knowing his gills are underdeveloped and his fins aren’t prestigious looking, he leans heavily on being able to make people like him, and will resort to cruelty and disgust if someone sees through his facade.

Feferi Piexes: Feferi grew up in her palace under the sea with a rotating cast of caretakers and fair-weather friends. She is not used to or comfortable with deeper emotional connections, and can come off cold or even hostile to people she doesn’t see as immediately “useful”. Think Heather Chandler, but with the capacity for growth.
