Environmental Interpreter for a Marine Sanctuary

Long before I recognized the horrors of Marineland or Sea World, I used to be one of the visitors that frequented those places. As a little girl, I would run up to the glass windows and press my face against them trying to get as close as possible to majestic animals in front of me. But even then, a gut feeling lingering within me questioned the paradox: how could a creature as mighty as the killer whale find happiness in a place so constricted? Thinking about how much I love the track and field behind my house as my sense of place, I’d wonder if I couldn’t go there and was confined to my home, how happy would I be? That was probably my earliest memory of how I became fascinated with marine animals. 

After that, we stopped going to themed zoos and instead throughout the years, I’ve had the opportunities to see marine animals like sea lions and dolphins in their natural habitats. Having said that, my ideal role of an environmental interpreter would be at a marine animal sanctuary. An environmental interpreter strives to embrace the wonder of life and crafts experiences that provide people the ability to foster a meaningful connection with the natural world. Whenever possible, I dedicate myself to raising awareness about the issues marine animals are going through. Just last year in Biol 2060, I had the opportunity to raise awareness on Northern Resident Killer Whales (NRKW) which are an at risk species around Vancouver Island. 

As an environmental interpreter at a marine sanctuary, some of my responsibilities would include providing informative presentations. These would allow me to get in touch with people and be able to educate them first hand on the ecological significance of marine animals as well as the ongoing efforts to protect them. Other activities like having educational workshops for school age children would allow children to form a bond with marine ecosystems so they too could be inspired one day. As well, holding interactive exhibits would allow people to have a first hand experience observing the challenges marine animals face in their natural habitat. 

There are many museums, coastal marine centers and marine sanctuaries in the world that are already working towards educating the general public. My ideal location would be at a marine sanctuary on Vancouver island since that is where NRKW are more often seen (Nichol & Shackleton, 1996). It would be a perfect location to be able to observe the killer whales, allowing for a more concentrated effort to develop strategies for preserving marine life. 

To inspire individuals about marine life like the NRKW, I believe being acquainted with marine biology is important, especially with the behavior, anatomy, nutrition and conservation needs of aquatic mammals. Aside from educational knowledge, one should be passionate about marine animals, only then will they be able to communicate with passion so people are able to appreciate the wonders of marine life.
