just watched yin-yang master: dream of eternity (fucking loved it, possibly top five favorite movies now) but i do really need to know (*slight spoiler warning*): was the twist with He Shouyue actually supposed to be a twist, or was it super obvious earlier because they have the same actor? i don't have Prosopagnosia, but i do have autism-related face-blindness and i was really struggling during the scene at the altar with the flashbacks, feeling like i was SUPPOSED to be getting something but it just wasn’t clicking, so it was only further into the movie that it made sense. SO, genuinely curious: was the audience supposed to make the connection face-wise between He Shouyue and Zhongxing WAY earlier, like when Qingming first confronted Shouye? and i just missed it? or was it really not obvious before the reveal, due to makeup and stuff?
#also if anyone wants to scream about this movie with me PLEASE do i have so many fuckin ideas#yym#yin yang master dream of eternity#cj updates#yym: doe#at least ive seen that as a tag i think

Incase you want another part...if not, feel free to yeet:
Y/n encounters dark enchantress with affogato...y/n panics and is like https://youtu.be/xSC910M-yyM?si=znWtTmUA_7CenRvk
Aaand then discovers DE just wants to spoil them to and so do the rest of the COD...
Theeen good guys burst in and y/n, thinking that good guy cookies are gonna think they are on COD's side and kick their butt...y/n again is like https://youtu.be/xSC910M-yyM?si=znWtTmUA_7CenRvk again.
Both sides gotta calm y/n down and both make sure y/n is comfortable...then two sides fight while y/n is set off to the side gently with their favorite snack, drink, and given headpats...aaand then winning side takes y/n...which I presume will be good guys! Like they bring y/n to their place, make sure they feel fine, enjoying their room, etc...
Enjoy the milkshake! I need more affogoto in my life. Idk why but to me, he’s skruncly
Panicking because of plot relevance
-platonic self aware-
-pt 1-
You have been traveling with Affogato for a while now and he’s honestly quite nice to have around! He will show discomfort with sleeping in the wilderness but you can’t blame him
Affogato does have some odd tendencies, like he always agrees with you no matter what and he just seems like he’s hiding something from you
But you don’t let that be a bother, your just glad to have someone to talk too… that was until you met the person who Affogato was working for…
Dark Enchantress.
You’ve heard of her and know she’s no good. So when Affogato introduced you to her, you were horrified. And well you wouldn’t admit it but you were willing to still travel Affogato because you were scared that if you didn’t, you’d end up dead
But to your surprise, Affogato started to brag about how great you are. Saying that you didn’t even know any “heroes” and you could persuade people pretty well since you had recently become a traveling merchant
To your surprise Dark Enchantress actually took you and Affogoto back to base???? You were confused but frankly too scared to speak up since you could end up dead if you cross this woman
But so far your stays been pretty nice, you’ve been getting good meals, a nice place to sleep in and it’s just chill. Affogato does stay by you most of the time.
But one day you heard a commotion… now everyone except some cake monsters were gone so that was odd… but you heard a very familiar name get called out… a name that Pitaya Dragon mentioned once or twice…
“Hollyberry Cookie…”

A bit of a distraction: The only reason I know that Onmyoji exists is because I saw a doll of one of the characters, black hair, big red symbols over his brows, fox ears. I kinda really wanted it but since those dolls are expensive as all hell, and I only wanted the doll because I like the head, I had to come to the conclusion that it wasn't for me. That smile tho, pity pity.😔Especially since I prefer getting a naked doll and making my own clothes, and the only option was getting all the clothing, make-up and hair. Seeing that it's not a show on netflix brought all those thoughts back, and now I'm gonna watch the show because I'd like to see who that character is, in case he's part of the show.
I hope this was a good distraction from some of the more tense asks. Confusion is also a form of distraction.

Haha.
Sounds like a particularly foxy take on Abe no Seimei who is an actual historical figure but also basically Japanese Merlin—i.e. the prototypical wizard figure constantly borrowed into pop culture of various types.
One of the pieces of folklore about this guy is that his mother was a fox spirit. He accreted a pretty hefty body of legends in ye olden times, making him ripe for pop culture use now.
Basically, Yumemakura Baku wrote a bunch of novels about him in the 80s where he's hanging out with Minamoto no Hiromasa (another actual historical person, though not someone known to be buddies with the real historical Seimei), and it kicked off a feeding frenzy as everybody put five-pointed stars (Seimei's symbol) all over everything and adapted the novels a billion times.
Some of the more recent takes have been two Chinese movies: the lulzy Yin-Yang Master, based on the cell phone game based on the novels, and Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity, where Hiromasa got an upgrade via a lot of black leather and a bad attitude.
(Boya and Qingming are just the Chinese readings of Hiromasa and Seimei's names in Chinese characters.)
I'm partial to the old Japanese live action version that YYM: DOE was heavily referencing. Less black leather. Similar level of hoyay.

What is YYM fic? 👀
hi marron :D wheeeee more fic talk time yay!
the YYM fic (first gradually) is this fic, with 7 chapters already up on ao3, but still about 2-3 to go to my best estimate. it's an attempt at a post-canon continuation of the Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity movie, examining the possible repercussions of Boya giving his life force to wake the Vermillion Bird. i started writing this for a halloween event of the DoE discord server, so it does strongly lean into the gory, body horror-y.
the basic premise being: what if the destruction of the Vermilion Bird statue fused Boya and the Bird's spirit together in Boya's body, and what if that started causing permanent changes to Boya's physiology? the result is a fic about bodily autonomy, about the fear of the unknown, about confronting our own demons, communicating the incommunible, and finding connection with the unconnectable.
i never got to that last part unfortunately, bc uni work got in the way, and then I watched Guardian, and there was absolutely no way back from that rabbit hole... but I really do wish I could maybe finish it one day, muse willing :)
thanks so much for the ask <333

love not given lightly
Boya has trouble summoning the aspect of Vermilion Bird. Qingming gets some ideas on how to shake that loose.
M-rated, for non-sexual Shibari, praise kink, and a LOT OF FEELINGS - and @the-pudding-is-a-lie of course had a hand in this with their wonderful wonderful art.
This was a labor of so much love. Hope you like it!

Remember you mentioning the yin yang master on netflix. Watched it. Man, nobody learned ANY lessons from anyone, did they? Baini was kind of a terrible person
Omg don’t even get me startedddd. They seriously didn’t it’s really annoying! The movie just ended up giving us shallow characters that didn’t learn anything... they were the same start to finish. I think the only person who changed was Boya teaming up with the demons/yaoguai and “believing in Qing Ming” but it hardly felt earned, it just happened. I maintain Dream of Eternity > Yin Yang Master 2021.
Baini was bad tbh it’s so weird they tried to paint her as if she was justified the whole time. Idk. I just didn’t like her. Like first of all when they were kids and she told Qing Ming to become her familiar when he was JUST despairing about being seen and treated as a monster. She’s all “be my familiar and I’ll be your master” and makes it out like that gives him a home/tie to humanity (as if he isn’t human enough) and he won’t go evil?? The movie tries to act like it some nice or (later) romantic thing but imo it doesn’t feel good that the instinct was to make the half demon kid make a “contract” with her like a demon would, saying it’s to give him a home/tie to humanity and keep him good. Like just say you’re friends and he can always rely on you, damn, why do the whole “it’s ok if you’re a monster because then I’ll be your master” thing? Eugh. There’s also the fact that even though apparently she loves him (or whatever they were trying to portray with her especially later in the movie) she was so quick to turn on him the moment it looked like he did a bad thing- as if she, like everyone else, was just waiting for confirmation of his true nature. All it took was him being in the wrong place for her to decide that of course he did it and go after him. But then the movie treats it like she’s some hurt lover and he’s the one who messed up their bond or something
#The Yin Yang Master#i'd have to rewatch the movie to remember the finer points and i'm sure there's other things she did but she bothered me a lot#the movie was just meh idk i like actually feeling something for the characters and feeling like they develop#and i like SEEING the development instead of the writers just going 'and then he developed as a character (no you don't have to see)'#which is why i'm absolutely biased towards Dream of Eternity honestly#and it didn't surprise me that DoE was based on the novel and YYM was based on the mobile game.........#The Yin Yang Master (2021)#i wish there was a more accurate word in english for yaoguai like no not demon or monster but.. yeah you get what i mean#octopisunsets#ask

Hey heeyy
Sorry for bothering, but since you just posted Ying yang master gifs and such, would you mind telling the me timeline for both movies? Cause after I watched the Yin Yang Master:dream of eternity, and much later The Yin Yang Master I was so confused. I couldnt figure out if DoE was before or after Yin Yang Master, because in both films, they acted like they just met .
unless I missed something. >.<;
Ignore if you dont feel like answering, But I appreciate you taking the time to read this ask!
I was too bored to watch more than 1/3 of the other YYM movie, alas. But I believe the two movies are different adaptations of the Japanese Onmyōji series of books, iterated through various manga & video games. I don't think they have a direct chronological relationship with each other--more like two views into the same pool of stories.

thank you for your answer.
i did watch the yin yang master movies a couple of months ago. i remember the discourse when people called it 'xianxia'.
im actually familiar with the five phases! It came up in a korean novel that uses elements from various mythology, this particular thing in relation to a mythological exorcist. i considered that i might have mistaken it for that but i didn't think so.
another thing that feels similar to pentagrams is the '8 gates' (2 of which were life and death but I don't remember the rest?) i read in a xianxia novel, tho the writers could have made that up for the plot heh.
--
Oh, that's interesting!
I know I whined about people not understanding my little fandom, but I didn't realize "It's not xianxia! AAAAAAH!" was more widespread than that.
I even had a Chinese-speaking friend go snoop around in Chinese fan discussions to make sure they all thought DoE was set in Japan and I wasn't insane.
The big issue is that onmyoudou/onmyouji canons are still historical fantasy, they're heavily daoist, and they're from an era of Japanese history when the aesthetics often look pretty Chinese to a modern eye. All that samurai and zen rock garden minimalism stuff shows up centuries later. This is full on penis hat-wearing, blinged out Heian period.
(One of my favorite things about historical costume dramas is how dumb historical hats look. I love them so much.)
The Heian period was basically trying to rip off Tang Dynasty China super hard, and a lot of Chinese fantasy uses Tang Dynasty shit too. Not to mention all of the "real" esoteric shit and traditional medicine and such is going to look the same even in a modern Chinese media that isn't overtly magical.
So if you're coming to Dream of Eternity or the other YYM based on the video game from being an Untamed fan or whatever, it's extremely non-obvious what's going on here.
Dream of Eternity in particular is in conversation with the two Japanese movie adaptations of Yumemakura's novels. Things like the sexy exorcism are drawn directly from there. I read some translated interviews where they straight up said they were referencing them a lot.
There are obviously both dragons and big snakes in Chinese mythology. However, my impression is that DoE was trying to reference Yamata no Orochi, though not very directly. The princess is pretty clearly Yao Bikuni. Qingming (Seimei) has shikigami, including a tengu. The thing with the demon playing a lute is a classic Japanese story that takes place at the Rashomon gate.
It's not like you couldn't have infinite stories about demons stealing important Asian-style lutes set in China. It's just that if you're familiar with the rest of this franchise and with historical Japanese writings, you recognize that story as coming straight from the Konjaku Monogatarishuu.
