Would the Jiang trio turn out better or worse with functional but evil Fengmian+YuZiyuan? Like, the two get along well and try their best to support all three kids. They also plan to go on a genocidal conquest spree that makes WRH look like a hippie.
I think this would go great for everybody. all three Jiang siblings are ride-or-dies even with no support from their parents/parental figures, I can only imagine they would be even more willing to completely ignore the concept of ethics to support one another if they had some adults backing them.
Imagine! Wei Wuxian's talent and irreverent charm backed not by the insecurity of an uncertain social position, but by knowing that anyone he offends has to go to Madam Yu if they want to complain about it.
Imagine! Jiang Cheng with his Sunshot Era charisma and his Jiang-zongzhu confidence and competence at the same time. If there's one sect you don't offend...
Imagine! Yanli who is supported in pursuing interests outside of killing people with a lightning whip! What would she do? Maybe she'd just still cook everyone nice meals, but she'd be much happier and more confident about it.
This obviously turns wangxian into a true enemies to lovers, if Lan Wangji would even fall for this version of WWX at all (I think MDZS!LWJ might and CQL!LWJ probably would not, though both would obviously still be extremely horny for him). Me being me, you could also totally get some chengqing out of this scenario. Actually, you even get xuanli, as Jin Guangshan frantically agrees to a marriage in an attempt to spare himself/his clan.

[WWX and YZY getting along]
Wei Wuxian | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 13-08-2021
[#weiwuxian and #yuziyuan slowly building a friendly relationship, modern]
I know I usually write yzy more hostile towards wwx so now I want them to bond, here's my thought:
Pretty much the same when jfm brought wwx to the family. yzy was very much against it, but there was nothing she could do so jfm wouldn't keep the child of his past love. Maybe she wouldn't have grown such negative feelings if jfm had been a better dad towards jc. (we will sadly never know )
She sees how the man often prioritises wwx over jc, praises him more than he does his own son, will spoil wwx as much as he can while giving so little to her son. Really how could she not be bitter about it? She simply wanted the best for her son.
this is something wwx picked on soon enough. That while jfm was more than happy with him, yzy was clearly not happy with him (yet he was too young to really understand /why/ she wouldn't be as nice to him as she would towards jc and jyl).
He didn't understand or catch on how jfm would prioritise him over jc. He was only a child accepting the love he hadn't received much before ending up at the jiang house. He never notices how jc was left behind when he didn't bring him with them himself.
but then wwx grew up and noticed how upset jc would get from the lack of love and attention from jfm. He would notice how often jfm would somehow forget about jc, how he didn't even seem to know what his son liked in general.
wwx grew up and understood /why/ yzy couldn't like him even a little bit, so he tried helping.
He started putting jc more before him, tried to remind jfm of jc, praising jc when jfm wouldn't do it. at first, yzy didn't really notice until it had become a pattern of action, but she thought it was good. It didn't exactly lift her opinion of him fully, but she thought he finally understood a bit.
Then she started looking more into it as the boys grew up into teenagers.
she noticed how wwx would be the one putting orders in for jc when they happen to be out without jc and bringing back some food.
how when jfm would take them to dinner and parties with other businessmen, wwx would start talking about how great jc will be later on the moment jfm was away.
how wwx was ready to go get jc when he was done with his club activities or on his way home from a friend's place. The way wwx seemed to act bad and disruptive on purpose so jc names could have a better connotation from literally everyone but jfm.
how she heard tales of wwx fighting anyone badmouthing jc.
over the years her feeling for him had started to slowly lift up, but what managed to push it higher was one specific request:
finding help to work on his fear of dogs. She had seen how her son clearly wished to have dogs around again, despite his father not allowing it because of wwx extreme phobia of them. She had not expected for the young man to want to make jc happy so much that he would work on his fear of dogs.
She learned about it after stumbling on wwx asking jfm about it (since he didn't know where to look for first). She frowned a bit when her husband simply answered with a "Why do you need to overcome it? It's alright to have fears sometimes". wwx had to give up when he saw how interested jfm was in helping him (something rare really).
She found wwx in the shared room he and her son have, looking at something on his phone. He seemed a bit startled by her sudden arrival, looking around a bit. "Jiang Cheng is over at Nie Huaisang place to help him with homework" he mentioned, thinking she was looking for him.
"I was looking for you" she simply stated, clearly making him nervous. It wasn't something she usually did, than to look for him. At least, outside of scolding. She could see it in his eyes that he was looking for what he did wrong this time.
"You are looking for a specialist that can help to work on phobia?" she asked, going straight to the main subject.
wwx seemed a bit surprised she knew, but he thought maybe jfm told her.
"Yes, it is a bothersome fear and because of me jiang cheng cannot even have a dog" he said. He knew jfm had gotten rid of jc's dog because of him and that even if jc begged him he was never able to get anymore. sure plushies were nice, but it wasn't the real thing.
plus /it was/ bothersome when it was something you could see as commonly as a dog. It wasn't like he was afraid of something he could avoid that easily like sea and plane.
"I know people who could refer you to someone" she then stated, surprising wwx to see yzy was the one ready to help him. This made him smile, nodding happily. "Then I will see if I can start seeing them" he stated.
with this they started the process, yzy personally taking him to his appointment so jfm couldn't somehow fuck it up, keeping it a secret from everyone else. jfm was simply so he wouldn't try to convince him it was useless, but she did wonder for jc.
"I don't want to give jiang cheng false hope," he said when she asked him why he wouldn't tell jc.
from there they slowly started to get along more, yzy finally opening up a little bit to wwx. jfm had been the biggest cause for her not liking him, but the boy had proven to be trying his best when it came to jc happiness. They had the same goal: keeping and making jc happy.
and like this, slowly, their relationship got better. She decided to take him to his appointment, even going to get something to drink on the way back home. they slowly started to be able to talk together without problem, even at home. Everyone else in the jiang household wondered where this sudden change came from (although jyl and jc were more than happy to see it).
When wwx would get a bit discouraged by how he seemed to be stuck sometimes, yzy would reassure him. After all, it was only normal not to be able to get over something when it was clearly a fear stuck deep in him.
and from there she slowly started to allow wwx a bit more in her time. She might not see him as a son (and she would probably never be able to because of reasons), but slowly she was clearly seeing he was only meaning good for jc.
(which was confirmed when they talked once, wwx is very much not interested in taking over the company, only interested in helping out jc if the young man allowed him to assist him).
Everything was doing great until wwx seemed to become slightly more secretive about something and she couldn't tell what it was about (although it didn't seem to affect jc). She did ask Jinzhu to try to look into it, just to make sure the young man wouldn't get himself into big trouble. after all, wwx had never been this secretive in the past, even when it was about causing problems.
although it must not have been something too bad as jc even seemed to know about it, clearly lying (he wasn't that good of a liar) to cover up for wwx.
She received news that it seemed because of his time passed with one of the Jade brothers.
"Stop the search then, I doubt this is anything that will cause great trouble" she simply said, not wanting to cross the trust they had managed to build. She knew jfm was being rather pushy towards wwx to be good in school so he could get to the best business program, so she assumed the boy was simply trying to do anything other than studying.
She didn't fully expect what it was really all about.
wwx real relationship with lwj was exposed when the boys were being careless in the living room, kissing as the moving was playing. The house was meant to be empty until later in the evening (the jiang went to go and visit family and wwx decided to stay behind for his date, of course, jc helped with his excuse).
cue the couple awkwardly sitting in the kitchen, jc hovering near the kitchen's door with jyl trying to calm him down.
jfm standing while looking rather disappointed and angry, yzy sitting and drinking some tea. wwx is tensed, unsure what will happen. lwj doesn't dare say anything, (not so) secretly holding wwx hand under the table.
the jfm starts with this thing should end, how this is disgraceful and how can wwx have a good future without a wife?
What will people think in the future if he has a husband? This could cause scandal.
wwx tries to argue back, but there isn't anything he can say to convince the man. jfm turns to his wife for support, "You agree don't you, my lady?". wwx gets even more nervous, unsure of what yzy will say. she doesn't say anything at first, only putting her teacup down.
"I do not see anything wrong in this, actually I believe young master Lan can only bring good to wei wuxian, maybe he can learn a bit from him" she starts, some tension finally leaving wwx shoulders.
"Weren't you the one saying one should always follow his heart and be with the one he loves?" she asked, a smile on her lips as she turned his own words against him, "He is simply doing what you taught him all his life".
she didn't add more as jfm simply looked at her in disbelief.
She truly didn't see anything wrong in it and it would probably help wwx to be with someone like lwj that seemed to be able to control his character a little bit. Plus, she had seen the way her son looked at his little Nie friend. shunning wwx for his love would only make her son unsure if she would also throw him away for his love.
the couple managed to escape when jfm asked to talk with yzy alone, wwx was more than happy to do so, joining jc who was waiting for them anxiously, going out so as to not hear what was sure to be an argument (again).
They argued, but yzy wouldn't back down from it. afterwards, it was clear that jfm was trying to sabotage things, but it was hard to do when literally everyone in the house was against him. So he gave up while also giving up on wwx.
wwx was a bit taken aback to see such a change in attitude, but at least now he had yzy behind him. She really wanted to laugh bitterly. Now that wwx wouldn't be the perfect heir jfm wanted him to be (especially with how many times wwx had made it clear jc is way better for it) and do everything he asked for, he would just give up on him as he did jc? The most laughable part was that /now/ he was starting to give some attention to his son (although it was already too late to create a real relationship with him now).
if jfm wasn't going to train him well, yzy would. She would help wwx learn how to be a great assistant to jc in the future (as this was clearly something he wanted to be).
Of course, she also met up with lwj somewhere after the incident, wanting to make sure he would do well to wwx (she would lie if she said she didn't care about his wellbeing anymore). but she also wanted to make sure he would support him in whatever path he decided to take, even if it meant being by jc side to help him (she was very pleased with how lwj was ready to be by his side, whatever that might include).
afterwards, years go by and wwx and yzy relationship grows better and better as time goes.
She cannot get herself to see him as a son (and wwx understand), but it is probably close to it.
(end)
=====
couldn't get this outta my mind when I was at work. I usually write yzy rather hostile to wwx, now I wanted them to be on friendlier terms 😩 I also want to write a canon-verse (?) about lqr slowly warming up to wwx in a post-canon setting just wwx slowly bonding with people who just couldn't with him sound good to him
of course, jfm stays jfm, for him to change he would either need to die and for someone else to take his place or to have an AU where he is not a shit dad ┐(シ)┌ no one can get me to appreciate him the same way I managed for yzy

All the "JC slapped JL to the ground stuff" is horrifying in a modern perspective, but cmon, this is a dude who had yuziyuan as a mother, im just fricking happy he doesnt pull zidian on JL.
Also, this is in ancient china where children get slapped for even talking back to their elders, if JL can run his mouth so much around JC with no serious repercussions (bc "breaking his legs" is evidently a threat that wont come true, as JL's legs are very much not broken despite JC saying that all the time), it rlly shows that JL is comfy ard his jiujiu, to the pt of using his jiujiu to threaten other ppl (ahem wwx as mxy).
I rlly like JC and JL's dynamic bc JL is JCs kid in all but name
Antis please stop acting like Jiang Cheng does not love Jin Ling or that they have a horrible dynamic where jc abuses Jin Ling when Jin Ling's introduction is like "holy crap he's SPOILED spoiled" and Jiang Cheng dumped an unholy amount of money on getting him traps for his night hunt and was apparently hovering around in the background to keep him safe.
It's CANON that Jiang Cheng adores Jin Ling and Jin Ling trusts and loves Jiang Cheng.

Tonight in GIF Making - JFM’s Sword
How have we never talked about how STUNNING it is?! Look at it! The fish swimming in the water, the lotus and lily pads wrapped around the hilt. The LOTUS as the pommel! It is STUNNING! And it’s so organic.
Sandu took the sword’s elegance and beauty and combined it with the Yunmeng and YuZiYuan aesthetics and ruthlessness. Instead of fish, Sandu has snakes. Instead of a lotus, Sandu has a toad. Instead of the smooth texture of wood (probably the same stuff Lotus Pier and the lotus throne is made from), Sandu has the texture of a centipede. I love how JC’s sword pays homage to this!!
Suibian took this sword’s organic grace. Suibian has metal wrapping around its grainy wood. Suibian is wilder and more raw but made of the same stuff. And I think that’s a design comment about how much wwx understands the Jiang Sect Motto.
This is how you know both boys loved him and how he loved both boys. I know fandom drags him as a dad and he deserved a lot of it. But look at their swords! Look at the design and the structure and see him in the boys he raised!
Aasdfkjlhlgsjk!

I was tagged by @agrippaspoleto for this- thank you!
rules: post the names of all your files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that intrigues them and post a little snippet or tell them something about it! Then tag as many people as you like.
Thank you for thinking of me! However, since my ex laptop crashed, I barely have any wips anymore and I didn't really write much since. Also I doubt anyone will send me asks lol so I tell you a bit about them already now.
"Wish fulfillment style story" - The one story I started after we talked about actually writing down the stuff we think of during maladaptive daydreaming. I put it on dropbox for some reason, where it survived.
"Modern XueYang&YuZiyuan" - The one story that I had written quite a lot and got reduce to 2 pages by the ex laptop. Motivation to write more is -943, esp since I don't think anyone's waiting for more content for that ship eheh.
There is also "shadowhunters random" - One night around 3am when I couldn't sleep I felt the random urge to write down some sort of essay about what Raphael Santiago means to me.
Tagging: @laughingpinecone @yumingyesfairy @rolypolydandy @invisiblegargoyl and whoever wishes to do it! As always, you're not obligated to participate.

but imagine if MoDaoZuShi/The Untamed literally follows how the story is told:
when weiying dies, he literally wakes up 16 (or 13) years earlier. he has all the knowledge of the older him, but everything is yet to come.
he keeps trying to fix things. but history keeps course-correcting. he meets lanzhan, they find the yin iron, the find the sword in xuanwu, he gives his core to his brother, he’s forced down a different cultivation path.
he dies as the hated yiling patriarch.
but he keeps going back in time. chance, after chance, after chance, and he doesn’t understand why the universe keeps favoring him.
(and throughout all of this, lanzhan is the only one who believes him.
i die, weiying tells him, and lanzhan listens.
weiying can’t make sense of that. it’s as if lanzhan remembers too and has vowed to never again choose any side other than beside weiying.)
weiying doesn’t know what to do until he thinks: if lanzhan really is my soulmate, then maybe meeting him is the catalyst to their destined fates.
so he tries this route:
he doesn’t mess around when the jiang sect is invited to gusulan for lectures. he never bonds with lanzhan, even though it destroys him that the other boy never even looks his way. weiying distances himself from the very beginning; he never lets them see the damage.
(maybe now he won’t hurt anyone.)
but down this path, lanzhan discovers the stygian iron on his own. he’s targeted by the wen sect by himself. he's cast into the burial mounds.
weiying immediately goes after him because of all things, he never intended for this to happen.
(i keep dreaming about you, lanzhan admits, though it’s hard to hear over the screaming resentful spirits. he pauses, trying to catch his breath. i remember you.
and now weiying really doesn’t understand. if you know what happens, why did you interfere? why would take my place?
lanzhan just looks at him, at this stupid idiot he’s still in love with time after time after time, unwaveringly. he doesn’t mention crossing the single-log bridge alone in the dark. he doesn’t mention pointing his sword at the yiling patriarch’s throat. he doesn’t mention a-yuan, doesn’t mention his headband, doesn’t mention the song he wrote for them. he doesn’t mention watching weiying fall.
instead, he remembers the image of weiying praying to the gods, paper lanterns burning up in the hazy sky like stars close enough to embrace. he remembers their promise.
we wish we can always stand with justice and live with no regrets.
lanzhan’s mouth curls upward. what do you think? he inquires finally.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
weiying wakes up in lanzhan’s room. they are 16, 17, maybe barely 18. they are children, and weiying fell asleep copying all of gusulan’s rules.
he snaps to attention, catching lanzhan’s gaze. it’s still harsh, criticizing, but knowing. knowing. my soulmate in this life.
weiying understands.
(he does get lanzhan drunk again. and they both are punished for it again. but he doesn’t tease lanzhan this time, just tucks him into bed, hand soft against a familiar jawline.
thank you, weiying whispers.)
when they fall into the cave, lanzhan still wraps his headband around their wrists. lanzhan also takes his hand. lanzhan chooses him.
this time, weiying trusts the people who love him. it doesn’t matter if wen ruohan finds out. weiying now has all four sects backing him.
wenchao doesn’t stand a chance against the twin jades of gusulan or the twin heroes of yunmengjiang. jiangyanli, wenqing, wenning are safe. the heavenly lady statue remains sealed away. the head disciples of all five sects save the yueyangchang sect.
you can change, weiying tells xueyang. the assassin almost laughs, his cheek bleeding, but there’s something dark and terrible in the other man’s eyes. the yiling patriarch speaks, live without regrets. live meaningfully.
xueyang quiets. he lets songlan and xiaoxingchen lead him away.
(there is no battle at the unclean realm. mengyao is stopped by niemingjue before he can murder the chief general. weiying, with all the blood of thousands of cultivators on his hands of a different timeline, stops the execution.
mengyao is brought to gusulan, to be watched over by lanxichen.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the disciples make their way to nightless city. the wen siblings promise to stay safe as they plan to save as many of their sect as they can from the inevitable battle.
weiying leads the other four boys to muxi mountain.
(but this is a fixed point.)
in the end, weiying and lanzhan remain trapped by the xuanwu of slaughter. as the pair ready their weapons, weiying suddenly thinks of mianmian. he undoes his robes, much to lanzhan’s immediate panic, and finds that the scar is still branded on his chest, just over his heart.
but it never happened, he whispers, frowning, looking at lanzhan through the glowing flames of their camp.
lanzhan stares steadily back at him, a hand coming up to his own chest. it does not matter. his matching mark is there too, even though such events have yet to transpire.
when they are ready, lanzhan takes weiying’s hand again. you must be safe.
weiying smiles.
(when he finds the sword, the resentful energy nearly overwhelms him again. he lets it, just for a few minutes, just so they can kill the wretched beast. he remembers lanzhan’s bleeding hands from the strings. please, don’t let him come to harm.
lanzhan saves him, brings him back to their fire, and heals him with his spiritual energy.
is this a dream?
no.
weiying laughs weakly again.
i never thought in my lifetime that i would see lan’er gongzi act so concerned. it’s cruel of him to say, after everything they know might happen—has happened, has never happened. lanzhan. just now, i thought i wouldn’t survive.
lanzhan presses the back of his palm to weiying’s forehead. weiying, he whispers, as if the man before him is the most precious creature across universes.
lanzhan hums. once again, weiying never stays awake long enough to hear the name of their song.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the other three disciples save them. as jiangcheng and niehuaisang fret over weiying, the latter storms up to jinzixuan.
just tell her, you stupid peacock!
jinzixuan bows his head, ears very red, and jiangcheng decides it’s high time he brought his older brother back home.
(where’s lanzhan?
he left, jiangcheng retorts, frustrated but all-too-aware. he will be fine.)
jiangyanli welcomes her brothers home, close to tears, and weiying secretly wonders if he will ever life a life in which he doesn’t cause his sister grief.
when yuziyuan lashes out at him, weiying smiles through the beating. i am sorry, he manages, though his back is bleeding from the zidian. this proud woman, this terrified mother, this loving wife glares down at the child her husband adopted.
(the important part is when the wen sect still comes for his family. the important part is that they are ready this time. the important part is that they fight on the same side.)
wenzhuliu recognizes something as he stands opposed to weiying. he does not touch the boy. jiangcheng never loses his golden core. the wen sect retreats.
the important part is that they all live. jiangyanli tends to his wounds, and weiying knows the medicine came from her mother.
the wen siblings arrive soon after, and wenqing’s healing prowess works its wonders.
(jiangcheng works up the courage to give wenqing the comb he bought. weiying laughs when wenning dutifully reports back to him, laughs and laughs until his aching body aches no more.
deep down, he thinks of lanzhan and fixed points in time.)
jinzixuan shows up to help yunmengjiang recover. emboldened by weiying’s jab, he does in fact properly court jiangyanli.
(weiying borrows a messenger butterfly from him.
lanzhan, lan’er gongzi, lan’er gege. the burial mounds.
he pauses, thinking carefully.
oh, light-bearing lord. i’m sorry. thank you.)
when he arrives at the Burial Mounds, lanzhan is already there amidst the skeletal forest, blue robes so light that they’re almost white. dressed for a funeral.
weiying.
don’t ask me to go back with you. you don’t have to follow.
lanzhan looks pained. once, he begged weiying not to go. once, he wanted to hide weiying away, safe from the world, imprisoned at his side. he doesn’t say don’t go where i can’t follow. he means, i will follow you to the ends of the earth without regrets.
a-xian, lanzhan murmurs, and weiying’s heart almost gives out right there and then. be safe. for the time that never came where he did not stand by weiwuxian, lanwangji apologizes. i’m sorry. thank you.
make sure we are ready when i return. protect shi’jie, jiangcheng. make sure wenning and wenqing are safe.
lanzhan smiles, a small thing, a rare thing, but always and only for weiying. you can trust me. i will wait.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(two months. three months. the yiling patriarch emerges, chenqing glistening from where it’s strapped strapped to his belt.)
the sects celebrate his return at the unclean realm. his siblings move to embrace him, but weiying holds up a hand, his eyes red. he’s trembling.
not yet. where is lanzhan?
(lanzhan finds him helpless in his room, dark smoke curling off his body. you promised you would be safe. his guqin materializes as he settles to play, fingers precise over familiar strings. focus. weiying, focus!
he plays ‘cleansing’.
when the resentful energy calms, lanzhan plays their piece.
weiying sighs, his breaths calming. tell me. what’s the name of that song?
the guqin disappears with a swipe of lanzhan’s white robes. he crosses over to where weiying is sitting on the bed.
lanzhan. weiying pouts.
subian appears in lanzhan’s hands. weiying pulls his old sword into his lap, clutching it tightly.
thank you.
when he sees that lanzhan won’t answer his question, weiying explains the new kind of cultivation he experimented with in the burial mounds.
let me help you, lanzhan interrupts.
weiying tilts his head, smiling. of course. i need the light-bearing lord to protect me.)
under wenqing’s care, it is but a few days before weiwuxian of the yunmengjiang sect stands before the assembled sects and explains. he tells them of the stygian iron seal he is trying to develop. he swears he will destroy it when wenruohan is stopped, three fingers raised to his head.
you all as my witness. no one should bear this kind of burden alone.
lanxichen negotiates their final battle formation, smiling knowingly when he sees weiying and his little brother standing side-by-side.
(later that night, the yunmeng siblings huddle together.
the three of us must never be separated, jiangyanli tells them, kissing the foreheads of her little brothers.
you’re getting married, jiangcheng points out, crossing his arms. aren’t you the one leaving us?
yanli laughs, as delicate as the droplets on the lotuses back home. never. we are family. we will always stand by each other. xianxian, do you understand?
weiying nods, his throat tight, before burying his face into his sister’s shoulder.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the united sects invade the nightless city. the puppets grow stronger; fallen cultivators all succumb to the stygian iron under wenruohan’s hand.
the yiling patriarch catches the light-bearing lord’s eyes from across the battlefield. he raises chenqing to lips and plays, haunting, discordant, tragic. his stygian iron seal overpowers the puppets.
once again, he’s pulled to wenruohan, suspended from the top of the cliff as he’s choked.
weiying! he hears lanzhan scream, flying up to him.
the wen leader stumbles. the grip on weiying’s throat relaxes and he falls into lanzhan’s steady grip. wenruohan looks down, disbelievingly, at the sword through his chest.
wenqing pulls her blade back, her eyes swirling with unbridled fury. how dare you threaten my brother. how dare you call yourself a wen? go to hell.
wenruohan dies. the sun in this dark era finally sets.
as weiying’s vision goes blurry, he sees lanzhan saying something. he thinks the other man may be crying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
when weiwuxian finally wakes up, he is in gusulan. he is wearing the white undergarments of their sect. when he wakes, it is to the sound of guqin. when he looks over, lanzhan is playing their piece.
he’s beautiful, weiying thinks, knowing his eyes are brimming with tears. no guan in the other man’s hair, no heavy crown to wear. this is lanzhan, young, soft, intimate.
it feels like a dream.
lanzhan’s fingers still over the strings. you’re awake. there’s a warm smile in the realization.
he goes to sit at weiying’s side. he lets weiying take his hand.
thank you, though what weiying really means is, of course i love you too, thank you for loving me, after all this time, thank you for taking care of me.
lanzhan inhales sharply. he has never been a man of many words, but the light-bearing lord is renowned for his honesty for a reason. this is nothing to thank me for. this does not warrant your thanks when i do this without effort. thank you for letting me stand by you.
thank you for being my anchor, weiying continues, for letting me return to you. let me take care of you now. thank you.
lanzhan’s mouth twitches upward, amused but with a muted kind of sorrow. let me take care of you too. you have always put others before yourself. you are allowed to rest. i will always catch you.
lanzhan—
the other man squeezes weiying’s hand. weiwuxian of the yunmengjian sect, son of cangsesanren and weichangze, brother to jiangyanli and jiangwanyin, the yiling patriarch, my soulmate of this life, weiying
lanwangji, what are you—
—may i court you properly?
weiying’s eyes widen. his mouth probably drops open in no flattering matter. his mind is going a million, billion thoughts a moment, and he thinks belatedly his heartbeat is probably doing the same. again, not healthy.
why is lanzhan looking at him like that? as if— as if—
i thought you were going to propose to me.
lanzhan promptly blushes.
weiying laughs, surging upward to hug the other man. i accept, if you’ll propose too. the disciplined model cultivator, lanwangji, one of the twin jades of gusulan—surely you must know your own sect’s rules. you’ve let me touch your headband.
yes. he hugs weiying back.
how fortunate i am! cultivation partners with the light-bearing lord, the to-be chief cultivator himself.
how fortunate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
weiying earns his sister’s approval to choose the courtesy name for her son. he and jiangcheng plan the most splendid of weddings for red, crimson red and gold and prosperous. indeed, a wedding to be envied and talked about for centuries to come.
he becomes sworn brothers with niehuaisang and wenning.
the wen sect rebuilds itself with support from the yunmengjiang and gusulan sects. wenqing assumes the role of the leader of the clan with hopes of bringing pride to the wen name.
(weiying and lanzhan help out the most. they meet the wen siblings’ nephew, a-yuan, who latches onto lanzhan’s leg and refuses to let go.
it’s weiying who coaxes the little boy into his arms, scooping him up as a-yuan squeals delightedly.
lanzhan, weiying says, pressing a little closer to him. now we have a child.
lanzhan smiles. yes. a family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
they say the newest chief cultivator is never far from chaos.
(where weiying goes, his husband follows.)
but for now, there are lotuses blooming in the gusulan sect where the loving duet between a flute and a guqin can always be heard.

Modern AU where Sect Leaders are still all competing for JFM. His house is bugged so they can figure out what he likes and what he think of them. Jin Guangshan somehow snuck a camera into the bathroom, so he can see JFM naked. It was mysteriously smashed in an hour by someone (YuZiyuan) and somehow the other Sect Leaders found out about it. Lan Qiren and Wen Ruohan had a temporary truce to wreck all of Jin Guangshan's Jiang Fengmian stuff (headcannon that each Sect Leader has a shrine to JFM)
the fact that we somewhat agree that JFM is such a canon bottom and makes it bleed on fiction is what’s giving me life here wesrtfvgybuhnijmokl
