Yu Yuan Garden at Huangpu District, Shanghai 📍

Yu garden or Yu Yuan garden is an extensive Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu District, Shanghai. It abuts the Yuyuan Tourist Mart, the Huxinting Teahouse and the Yu Garden Bazaar. Covering over two hectares, Yu Garden is famous for several architecture marvels, including the Big Rockery, the Jade Boulder and so on. At Yu Garden, visitors are able to experience the ancient architecture in China and to take pictures in traditional costumes of Qing Dynasty.

Opening hours: 8:45 - 16:45, closed on Mondays except for national holidays.

Entrance Fee: 40 rmb (Apr-Jun & Sept-Nov) 30 rmb (Jul-Aug & Dec-Mar) Free for children under 4.3ft.

i rewatched the lord of the rings series with my parents over the course of the past week or so and what sam and frodo have makes me genuinely so emotional... they're very inherently sapphic in my mindspace and i thought about how puppy and yuyuan would be them... it's something about inherent loyalty and never giving up on the person you swore to protect, even when you're alone and you know you are walking towards the end of your life. i should place them in an au since their story will always revolve around suffering solitude and finding solace in one another.

yuyuan is someone who is very much determined to go through things alone when she very much falls to the weakness of human emotions far too easily ough... but puppy is someone who will never give up on her. he's so heart-clenchingly devoted to assuring her happiness and safety that he Would carry her all the way up mount doom while they are both starving and dying and on their last legs...

it is very much a two way thing, though. puppy regularly falls into hopelessness and yuyuan would kneel by him and say they must go on, that she's here, pulling him to his feet and letting his tired body lean on hers. it's so important because yuyuan herself is a pragmatist and a cynicist but very rarely an optimist, but here she understands more than anything that to survive, they have to believe in something. even if that is just the trivial, little things. even if that is only each other.

something about leaning on one another when all else seems hopeless... something about making a space of emotion when the world around you is cruel. the strength of vulnerability. the strength of the weak who lean on each other.

expectations:

smooth, at least compared to my other sketchpads (whatever cheap stuff i find & my favorite czech paper, design of art)

white, not the typical yellowish tint

can take watercolor without curling up on itself like a scared isopod (250g/m2), color somewhat liftable

pen-friendly

markers don't bleed through instantly

reality:

relatively smooth, random soft texture, very white

takes watercolor well, minimal warping (not taped) after moderate water usage

cheap pen nib doesn't get stuck on texture, doesn't collect fibers. had to actually try to get nastier lines

markers not yet tested

it cost me like 3 czk ($0.13) per page on sale, ~3.8 czk ($0.16) pp normally!

conclusion: no rating yet, needs more techniques to appreciate&assess this "multi-techniques" paper; honestly i just want to show you this thing 🍂❄️

it is probably just (diluted) (sepia) ink; i used watercolor (umber, mars brown) & black drawing ink; added more texture by lifting watercolor with crumpled tissue & wet some of the ink

Went to look up the current status of a bridge Isabella Bird took a photo of in the late 19th century, and the Wikipedia photo is of very nearly the same view.

It's a nine-turn bridge in the Yu Garden in Shanghai.

Day 1-2: Suzhou – Classical Gardens and Water Town Charm

• Humble Administrator’s Garden: Explore this serene garden and enjoy traditional snacks at nearby tea houses. Suzhou-style desserts like osmanthus cakes and plum cakes pair well with green tea. This iconic garden, known for its poetic design and meticulous layout, is the largest in Suzhou and features classic Jiangnan landscaping. • Suzhou Museum: Beyond its unique architectural design by I. M. Pei, the museum houses ancient artifacts, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings that showcase Suzhou’s rich history and culture. Each exhibit tells a story of China’s artistic heritage, making it a must-visit for history lovers. After exploring the exhibits, head to the nearby area to try Suzhou-style mooncakes, a savory treat with pork filling.

• Pingjiang Road: This ancient canal-side street exudes old Suzhou charm, with well-preserved architecture, traditional teahouses, and local shops. • Tongli Ancient Town: A quintessential Jiangnan water town, Tongli offers winding canals, ancient stone bridges, and traditional Ming and Qing dynasty residences. Highlights include the Retreat & Reflection Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can experience serene classical architecture and landscaping. Beyond its picturesque canals, Tongli offers Jiangnan classics like sweet and sour Mandarin fish and braised pork belly served in quaint riverside restaurants.

Day 3-4: Hangzhou – Natural Scenery and Cultural Heritage

• West Lake Boat Tour: Take a leisurely boat ride to appreciate the lake’s famous sites, like Leifeng Pagoda, which is linked to romantic Chinese legends, and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, where floating pagodas create a mesmerizing reflection. West Lake is known for its idyllic beauty, with willow-lined shores, lotus ponds, and distant mountains. After a boat ride, enjoy a lakeside meal with Hangzhou specialties like Dongpo pork (a tender, slow-braised pork belly named after poet Su Dongpo) and West Lake Vinegar Fish, a sweet and tangy fish dish often made with carp from the lake.

Participate in a tea-picking experience, learn about the tea-making process, and sample the fresh green tea, renowned for its delicate aroma and refreshing taste. Visit Dragon Well’s tea fields to experience tea-picking and sample Longjing shrimp, a light dish flavored with tea leaves, at a local restaurant overlooking the fields.

Day 5-7: Shanghai – Modern Metropolis and Cultural Fusion

1. Transportation: Travel between cities by high-speed train. It takes about 2 hours from Suzhou to Hangzhou and 1 hour from Hangzhou to Shanghai.

2. Accommodation: In Suzhou and Hangzhou, stay in traditional guesthouses for an authentic Jiangnan experience, and in Shanghai, opt for a hotel in the city center.

3. Food: Try local specialties like Suzhou’s Squirrel Fish, Hangzhou’s West Lake Vinegar Fish, and Shanghai’s Xiao Long Bao dumplings.
