Yuru Camp's guide on how to be friends with a hella cute solo camper

For real tho, Rin from Yuru Camp is a very good portrayal of what an introvert is like. Compared to the over the top lone wolf, aloof, doesn't want to make friends, loner type characters that anime tends to have, Rin is shown as simply a girl who loves to go solo camping. And rather than just explaining her initial aversion to Nadeshiko as just part of her personality, the show illustrates just how energetic Nadeshiko is and that becomes too much to deal with for Rin who just recently met her. This is something often seen in introverts: having a hard time dealing with overfamiliarity from people they don't know that well. The show also shows in abundance just how much she enjoys camping by herself because she gets to explore around the area and spend the time to take in and appreciate the scenery without anyone bothering her. And Yuru Camp does such an amazing job showing that Rin loves solo camping and not that she hates going on camping with other people.

More importantly, I'm actually very happy with how the show handles becoming friends with introverts like Rin. The cast knows how to maintain the right distance from Rin while simultaneously taking steps to becoming better friends with her. For example, they keep inviting Rin to go camping with them, but even if she refuses, they don't hound her about it 24/7 and force her into doing it. Instead, the club and Rin exchange photos during their camping trips and they all have fun looking at scenery photos and food photos. And in the end, they finally managed to get Rin to come camping with the whole group and she is having a blast. If the whole group simply forced her to come with them in the beginning, it would have definitely ended in a disaster with Rin having the worst time of her life, and most likely ending her friendship with them. Instead, the other girls take it slowly and build up their friendship with Rin and they all finally got to go camping and have fun goofing off with everyone.

Teal Summer

Here’s Miku’s half of my Sea Day/海の日 postcards. Also, just like Gumi, I’ve provided some different versions:

Left / First: Flat Colors w/ white highlights

Middle / Second: Final Image, no overlays or filter

Right / Third: Final image w/ “nostalgic filter”

I really, really love this color palette when applied to Miku. It gave me a good challenge, especially with her suit. I didn’t do really dynamic suits for either girl, in large part because I didn’t want to. I wanted these to be very simple images, in large part because they’re only postcard sized images, and I didn’t want them to be too “busy”.

Once more, just like Gumi, the color palette Summer Sherbet. It comes from ColourPod, one of my favorite sites for user-submitted palettes. I’ll definitely be using similar summery color schemes over the next few months.

In terms of this illustration was inspired by Kimagure Orange Road in particular: it’s been on my mind a lot recently. I’m going to be starting the anime soon (again) and will be reading the manga for the first time. Somehow, a romcom with a lot of summer imagery felt just right for the second half of the season.

To be honest, I like this set so much that I might make myself some mini prints to hang up in my office. The great thing about creating has been that so many pieces I make can then become art that I can decorate my spaces with. Whether it’s my fiber work or my illustrations, I can surround myself with happy creations and good energy. It’s wonderful to celebrate my art like that!

Anyways, here’s to next Miku Monday! I think I’m going to go with a Laid Back Camp/Yuru Kyan theme!
