Yurio Cosplay - Yuri on Ice

Went to my local-ish Pop Expo and since it was cold, I decided to go as Yurio. It was fun, First time I’ve actually been able to talk to people properly at an event without having a panic attack.

Saw some people I knew so that was fun, Gave away a few handmade rings as gifts.

Part 2.

-- How your friends reacted to Yuri!!!, when it became so popular?

Nasuchan: All of my friends were like: 'Woah, Yuri!!! is so awesome! Awesooome! Let's go skating! Let's go skating together!!'

All: (laugh)

Alyo-senpai: Davai!

Nasuchan, Usagi: (laugh)

Alyo-senpai: I don't have many friends, who watch anime, so I was posting about Yuri!!! on Twitter. Everyone was so excited there, for example about the last scene of episode 7., Victor and Yuuri hugging.

Nasuchan: After that episode, all my Russian friends were so 'woah!!!' crazy about it on Twitter, my whole TL was in filled with Russian (laugh). But now I see even more people tweeting about Yuri!!! than when it was airing. It started suddenly, maybe one month after the show finished airing. Everyone is talking about who their favorite character is, about cosplay and merchandise.

-- Who is your favorite character?

Nasuchan: Phichit is cute! I especially like that scene in episode 10. when before he goes to see Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, he calls Yuuri, like 'Yuuri, answer~'. I also like how tsundere Yuri Plisetsky is. That scene in episode 9., when he gives pirozhki to Yuuri was so good. Plus, you can really see that he wants to become the best skater so much and this makes you want to support him.

-- As an athlete Yurio is incredibly stoic and cool, isn't he?

Nasuchan: Exactly! I like his 'Agape' performance the best - it's very easy to understand how he feels (copies Yurio's 'Agape' pose).

Alyo-senpai: I also like Yuri Plisetsky. He's just like a cat and very cute.

-- Looking from the perspective of a Russian person, is Yurio 'cute'?

Alyo-senpai: In everyday life scenes, he's cute and when he's performing he's cool!

Usagi: Yuri Plisetsky is my favorite character, too.

Nasuchan: Yay! (high five)

Usagi: I think that he's the most beautiful character among all the characters in Yuri!!! Especially his FS look, with ponytail is so beautiful.

Alyo-senpai: But I think that the most interesting male character is JJ.

Nasuchan: Yeah, it's JJ (laugh).

Alyo-senpai: In episode 11. he made so many mistakes, but I like that he didn't gave up and gave his best until the end. (JJ's pose) JJ style!

Nasuchan: JJ style!

What about Yuri on Ice kept you watching it? I've been looking for a new anime to watch and it looks good!

So... When Yuri on Ice premiered, I was watching episodes as they dropped in Sub on sketchy streaming sites. I was 15? I'm pretty sure. So... Young. And, as any young 15 year old girl in fandom... I started watching because of the cute guys and the shipping.

Of course, that isn't why I stayed. What made me stay, was the way this story was presented. I wasn't even into figure skating at the time, and yet, I was enthralled with the almost insider-look at the sport. What resonated with me was how we were introduced to Yūri. He was depressed, kind of in this limbo state. It resonated with me, having just transplanted into a new school for the first time and having left everyone I knew behind. Lost and depressed.

So, watching his development as a character was a HUGE factor in me sticking with the anime. Also... Watching a MLM relationship portrayed as so natural for the first time out of any other animes I had seen at that point in time. It wasn't overly sexualized, it was just... Nice. I don't know how else to describe that. I absolutely adored watching Viktor and Yūri's grow throughout.

Yurio my beloved. I love that boy. He's a brat and he's conflicted in parts and it just makes so much sense for him. Given what we know of his early childhood... God. Yeah that hits home for me and it's no wonder I clung to him like a whole lifeline. Honestly, even if you stripped everything else away that I love about the show... I would still watch religiously for him.

The music is phenomenal. Yuri on Ice (the song) easily moves me to tears still. I get SO emotional over some of the pieces.

I won't get into how it all hits as a now-skater, that's a whole different post in and of itself. And... The fandom was also a whole thing when the anime dropped. That made a huge difference for me, especially being in the cosplay scene. The fandom is still FAR from dead, don't get me wrong, but it was a lot more lively back in the day lol.

I could talk for hours about this show- it's not everyone's cup of tea, being a sports anime, but I highly encourage giving it a solid try!

i used to cosplay my kindred spirit, Yuri Plisetsky from Yuri on Ice years ago ... would like to cosplay Yuri again, and debut him at a Weeb Night, and definitely gonna be him for next year's Connecticon! (If we get to go ... hope we do. Also wish to visit the ones in Rhode Island, Boston, and New York, plus Nintendo store.) Yuri and Android 18 were my main cosplays for a time, probably gonna change to Yuri and Sailor Mars, albeit I only have a skater dress for Mars, and not a proper cosplay, but I still wuv eet, my surrogate Big Sis got me the Sailor Mars purple wig (from Sailor Moon Crystal) and skater dress, i was sho happy, while Micky got me the Yurio jacket custom made for me, and also my Yurio wig (not pictured here ... that was my bleached hair when i was 27).
