Yesterday I finally received my copy of Butterfly and Empire 「蝶と帝国」! Manga and novel. The standee is one I commissioned myself, for personal use only and with the blessing of the author. I couldn't be happier... In this post, I'll review this masterpiece of a manga!

My loved ones, my way of life,

To whom should I point the anger for everything that I've lost?

God? The Emperor? Or the revolution?

Set in Imperial Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, this is a novel depicting the love and revenge of women at the mercy of the malice of the times.

Original novel by Yoshitaka Nanboku, adapted to manga form by Minoda Kaidou (MNDH) (also here on Tumblr!).

This is an absolute masterpiece. A story that's not just about the romantic relationship between the main leads, Kira and Elena, but also about Russia's turbulent state at the time. It's so refreshing to read an historical piece with lesbian characters, and to see their relationship be crafted with such seriousness and care. I cried many times. The setting is also so carefully depicted, I'm absolutely amazed by the attention to detail.

Keep in mind that this manga is intended for adult readers! Not only are there sexual scenes (also very refreshing to see in a yuri manga), but most importantly, the story deals with very serious topics, such as violence, antisemitism, sexual abuse, war, and more. I've seen it be described as "a yuri that could never be published on Yurihime", if that tells you anything. In other words, it's a heavy read, but one I can't recommend enough.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the cover art style yurihime has been doing for the past few months.

Like not only are they beautiful but there also so celebratory in how they highlight genres past and embrace the class S girls school yuri of that is so much the roots of yuri. While also publishing things that are so far from this old school yuri like asumi-chan or an autobiographical work.

honestly one of the things that's always stood out to me most about dynasty scans as a website is that it's not a website for hosting yuri scanlations, it's the site that's run by and has grown around a yuri scanlation group which might seem like a nitpick until you remember that, rather than just being scans of Tsubomi or Comics Yurihime, it's anything and everything a bunch of randos interested in yuri wanted to scanlate and post. there's doujins of a very wide variety of subjects, ships and horniness levels, a noticeable amount of shonen, het josei romance, etc. other things like shimeji simulation and pop team epic (or at the other end of the spectrum, gunjo) get hosted on the site because most people are doing a wink-and-nod reinterpretation of those comics as yuri, because these readers are scanlating groups aren't just interested in yuri as a genre (what the yuri tag is for) but also general depictions of romantic relationships between women.

Madeline was born a freelancer, but after injecting herself with shade essence, she went insane. She would give birth to three children before being arrested by D.U.M.P:

Ben Sr was born a wolf shifter, and is the beta of the Montriguez pack. He is a sociopath, who encouraged Maddie's experiments, and even pushed her to experiment on Ben Jr before being arrested alongside his wife.

Ben Jr has never been to school before, and was taken in by an inchoate daemon named Chara. He is currently being homeschooled by his adoptive father.

Aiko Yurihime (Angel) - Takara Yurihime and Kokoro Yurihime

Takara was born an unempowered human in Japan. She got a job as an assistant to a modelling company and lived a fairly normal life until she met Kokoro. She was immediately smitten and hooked up with him, having two children:

Kokoro was born a fox shifter in Japan, and had a glamorous upbringing. By the time he was in his 20s, he was rich, famous, handsome and a supermodel. After Takara told him she had gotten pregnant, he married her in order to not only support her, but to be in his children's life. This was a bad idea, and after a lot of fighting, they'd divorce.

Aiko and Hikari were split in the divorce. Aiko went with Takara and Hikari stayed with Kokoro. Aiko is taking after his father more than his mother.

Briar Forrest (Baaabe) - Caroline Forrest and Cedar Forrest

Caroline was born in New York, being an unempowered human. She had dreams to be a teacher, but put that on hold because a fling with Cedar got her pregnant. While Caroline never blamed Cedar for her having to give up on her dreams, she did blame her children, despite the fact she had 10 of them:

Cedar was also born in New York, being an unempowered human as well. He has an enhanced connection to plants, something he passed down to his oldest daughter, Briar. Like Caroline, he also blames the children for him not being able to achieve his own dreams, and left them in Briar's care.

When Briar left, Sage began working many different jobs in order to buy a place where he and his siblings could live without their parents. So far, he's half way there.

Olethros Nyxium (Sweetheart) - Persephone Nyxium and Erebos Nyxium

Persephone was born in Greece, although the exact date is unknown due to her family being so closed off. She was named after the goddess of fertility and queen of the underworld, as a way of paying tribute to Persephone. She was arranged to marry Erebos, and gave birth to 25 sets of twins, although only two have left their families home:

Artemis Nyxium, ???

Erebos was born in Greece as well, and the exact date is unknown. He was named after the primordial god of Tartarus, as a way of paying tribute to him. Erebos would be in an arranged marriage with Persephone, and would father 50 children with her.

Olethros carried out a number of whirlwind romances before meeting Milo, although the only one he wanted to last was with his oldest friend.

Artemis Surcorrose (Lovely) Elizabeth Surcorrose and Andrew Surcorrose

Elizabeth was born in America, but she moved to Greece as a child. She felt alone and isolated, but she then met Andrew, and they become close friends. When they grew up, they were married and adopted 3 children, as Elizabeth was infertile:

Andrew grew up in Greece, and was a very lively child. He quickly made friends with other kids, including Elizabeth, who he grew up to marry. He was a very strict father towards his children, believing that tough love would make them strong.

Artemis moved to Dahlia as a young adult, and dyed her hair purple as a fit of rebellion. She developed an interest in paranormal places right away, which led to her exploring Wonderworld.

Oliver Montcroix (Darlin') - Charlotte Montcroix and Duncan Montcroix

Charlotte was born in Oxford, England. She was a wolf shifter, and enjoyed running with her pack. She met Duncan when she was 17, and was immediately smitten with the Direwolf shifter. They got married and had 4 children together:

Duncan was born in London, England. He was a Direwolf shifter, which was rare among wolf shifters. He was made alpha of his pack at 22, when his 3rd son was on the way. After George was born, he moved the family to Dahlia for diplomatic purposes.

Charlotte, Duncan, Oscar, Noah and George were killed by wolf hunters, leaving only 3 year old Ophelia. She grew up and transitioned to male, becoming Oliver Montcroix. He doesn't remember much about his birth family.

So in the bird app there's another ''yuri is for men'' discourse again (for 3256544th time).

I am on ''Yuri is aimed at women'' camp because I stand by the historical accuracy but I don't think trying to dismiss men aren't into yuri or there's no such a thing as male yuri creators/fans is very silly, smh. esp when one of the most unaplogetically horny lesbian anime in this recent season is adaptation of yuri ecchi manga made by man

like I would agree if this stuff applied at late showa- early heisei era, where indeed most dominating yuri creator and enjoyer was women.

but from mid-heisei (2010s) to Reiwa aka current year, you can see that yuri audiences are growing and a lot of men are into yuri with ever growing of moe anime with all girls cast that mostly leaning to ''yuribait'' or yuri subtext stuff. I believe modern Yurihime readers also has growing male audiences (you can thank Yuru Yuri for that)

What funny to me is that zoomer himejoshi who has this mindset somehow are into utena, lycoris, and gwitch, a yuri series where the creators are men lmao.

also it is well known fact in manga/ranobe sphere most yuri author are dominated by women but in anime sphere most yuri anime (not adaptation) are created by men (Utena, El Cazador de la Bruja, Gwitch, etc).

Idk but it's not weird for cishet men for into lesbian stuff especially when a lot of lesbian porn are catered toward them, since day 1.

Like I get the frustation that some ignorant people spouting that yuri is for men but I don't think trying to dismiss men on Yuri would make your argument convincing imo. not when all time popular yuri classics that himejos worship was created by men and their favorite yuri subtext moe show has large male audiences.

I feel that it would be interesting to have (nuanced) discussion at the difference between himejoshi and himedanshi when it comes to consuming Yuri fiction. but alas, we wont have that in this current economy.

Also people wouldn't like this, but the reason why Yuri get ''it's made for men gaze" reputation was because at that time most popular yuri stuff in 2010s are yuribait moe anime, where it attract the male otakus. doesn't help that himedanshis and dudebros are very vocal about ''yuri is purest form of love'' , ''i rather see may waifu kiss girl than boy bcus i dont want to get cucked reee'' shit, also a lot of himejoshi are not really vocal at that time.

just my 2cent and also people need to stop bringing this discourse back again. because the root of this problem is that a lot of people perception on yuri (i'm talking about normie or casual animanga fans btw) is still stuck on 2010s yuribait moe show.
