Pretty good read, there's a little bit of characterization for Rae that's not in the manga/anime that I enjoyed. The writing was unfortunately a little bland and stilted, but that's probably a consequence of it being translated from Japanese.

this is . currently written on a water damaged and crumpled piece of paper from my work notebook (proof under cut) using mostly initials for plausible deniability (my f1 fan coworker has since left for a new job so i will no longer need to engage in subterfuge). unfortunately i write lightly in general and REALLY lightly when writing fic at work so it is . hard to read…

There it is.

Lando’s breathless, still, eyes bright under her makeup even from all the way over here. Shining under the lights like usual.

She winks.

Oscar starts playing on autopilot. It’s a repetitive bass line. Which is good, because she still hasn’t figured out how to tear her eyes away from Lando singing the intro, a month into touring.

hhhhhhhhhhhh saboace royalty au. ace was crown prince but can’t use magic which is necessary to become king, so he renounces his title and becomes infamous for his eccentric tendencies to play up the illusion that he’s truly not meant for the throne and that his younger sibling has full rights to the title of heir.

sabo is born to a family serving in the royal court, has been a genius magician since he was a child, and is the perfect example of a young man fully educated to serve at the king’s side. which is why he’s allowed himself to be tied down into a loveless political engagement with the king’s heir, putting the whims of his family before his own and resigning himself to become the future ruler’s consort/spouse to legitimize his role as an advisory right-hand man.

but then the heir grows rebellious and denounces the engagement with sabo in public and ace swoops in to save the day (and sabo’s reputation), demanding his father give sabo to him instead. he steals sabo away and challenges his sibling’s right to the throne, intent on earning back the title not for himself, but so he can make sabo (who is heavily qualified to rule) the king - and since they’ll be wed, no one will be able to undermine sabo’s position as he will technically be part of the monarchy that governs the kingdom.

A little late but here's a little clump of characters from my favorite series for Christmas:

1. Regarding Saeki Sayaka (Volume 3)

While not nearly as nuanced as the main series of Bloom Into You, I feel like that fits Sayaka's character? She falls in love at the drop of a hat and someone like Haru, who speeds through life and acts on a whim compliments that aspect of her perfectly. There are some fun callbacks to the manga and even the earliest pages of the first novel too. However, I will say that it did feel like somewhat...rushed? Like even if we're comparing her relationship with Suzuki, which didn't even take up an entire novel's worth of content, that one still felt better paced. Her relationship with Haru was the sole focus of this volume and it felt like it went by lightning fast. I'm not saying every romance needs to be a slowburn, but maybe taking a step back and really getting into the nitty gritty of their relationship would've been nice? If I had been in charge of writing these novels I think I would've skipped the second one entirely and just made two volumes about Haru. That probably would've given them the time to fully flesh out the characters. Anyway, despite my complaints, I did think this novel was cute and I'm glad Sayaka got the happiness she deserved. Just don't go into these novels expecting the same level of nuanced storytelling that Bloom Into You did. Think of them more as a deep dive into Sayaka's psyche, you'll get a lot more out of series that way. Also skip the second volume. You've already read Bloom Into You, you don't need Sayaka to tell you what happened a second time.

most of you all probably don't need to hear this, but since the yuribait topic came up again, I want to once again make clear that whenever the word comes up on this blog it by default means 'yurbait (affectionate)' and when I tag things with

those are meant as recommendations^^

If it's tagged with the former then I may or may not tag it as yuri afterwards depending on how much actual romance was in it; if it's tagged as the latter the only way for that to happen would be if the show actually pulls a straight love interest out of it's hat.

And of course, if the girls kiss or equivalent, I am still intending to hold my promise to put every single post I reblogged with a yuribait tag corrected to #yuri into the queue. Which might not be realistically possible but I'll see what comes of that if it ever happens.
