Classical Symphony
Again fell down a rabbit hole and stumbled upon a new-to-me YouTube channel. And its username is….wait for it….Ballet! What a stroke of luck to lockdown that username early on!! I poked around and I'm guessing that the channel belongs to Mikhail Kryuchkov from the Bolshoi because he's in nearly every video. It's a strangely low-key gold mine, and many of the videos are filmed from the wings of the Bolshoi theater. One that stood out to me is this 2016 Bolshoi performance of Yuri Possokhov's "Classical Symphony," which was originally created for the SFB. Possokhov's choreography completely draws me into the joyous, exhuberance of Prokofiev's score.

I'm reminded that Leonid Lavrosky also choreographed a ballet of the same name, and it's been presented in at least one Vaganova graduation performance. Enjoy the compare and contrast!

Very much enjoyed both my visits to see Hong Kong Ballet's new version of Swan Lake. Constantine Allen's guesting as Prince Siegfried powered the show first-time round, while Ye Feifei as Odette-Odile was the force on my second watching. I liked the costumes and the sets, and Yuri Possokhov's choreography didn't seem to make much difference to the general form of the dancing. The only odd note was the reworking of the plot to put the Jester at the story's heart. Really? It makes no sense to have him driving things. But with the music as sublime as ever, I didn't really care.

Isaac Hernández in rehearsal (with Alice McWhinney) for Yuri Possokhov’s “Senseless Kindness.” Photo by Laurent Liotardo.
Isaac Hernández is the star Lead Principal of the English National Ballet and 2018 Benois de la Danse danseur recipient. Among his firmament of awards and achievements are also the Alexandra Radius Award for Most Outstanding Dancer; Gold Medal USA International Ballet Competition; Bronze Medal and special award from the Kirov Ballet at Moscow’s International Ballet Competition, and first place in the Cuba International Competition. Hernández is furthermore an arts and tourism ambassador of Mexico and was the youngest Mexican artist to receive an outstanding artist award from the Mexican President.
Like his brother Esteban (yes, that Esteban), Hernández was born in Guadalajara and taught ballet by his father Héctor Hernández before training at The Rock School. After graduation, Hernández danced to acclaim at ABT II; San Francisco Ballet, and Dutch National Ballet before joining ENB as Lead Principal in 2015. He is a consummate princely danseur who has danced all the great canonical male roles, and he has also been able to influence new works at  ENB under Tamara Rojo’s direction. Such roles include Albrecht in Akram Khan’s acclaimed kathak-inspired Giselle. (Rojo is also his romantic partner -- a relationship that has at times been controversial, with critique levied mainly at Rojo for potential conflicts of interest.)
Along with performances at ENB, Hernández guests widely and is deeply involved in the promotion and popularization of ballet in Mexico. Along with siblings Esteban and Emilia, Hernández owns and operates Soul Arts Productions, which organizes tours, masterclasses, and the annual Despertares Gala in Mexico (which attracted a crowd of 10,000 in 2017). The Hernández siblings and their father Héctor also founded and are involved in the running of a multi-campus school in Jalisco that offers free ballet education to members of the public.
