so i used to run (with @forgetou) a fic rec blog @msybookclub and it has quite a lot of angst fic recs! i also answered this q a few times hrm (i tag it under hq x reader on my blog, stupid of me i know) but some of my favourites:

works by miyachondria on ao3 - dearly beloved killed me and if you're asking for historical aus, patches of light is the definitive piece for me.

works by @myelocin - is it ridiculous that i love nic's work this much? yes. but am i ashamed about it? unabashedly not. top angst picks for me wld be the redefining me series, the faded side of the photograph and grids in the sky.

works by @yurens - historical au? deep spring. works that killed my heart? goldfish and lamplight. but every piece by yuren is a masterpiece, and i admire her brain and talent so so much. i'm such a fangirl and am forever grateful that she is my friend <3

works by @tsukishumai - i am chomping at the bit for cam to finish writing the next installment of the love galore series featuring bo, kuroo and akaashi in university! it's a ball of fun, and loads of angst, so it'll be right up your alley. and anything that cam writes, really please give it a try!

works by @star-puff - meg's work is...how should i describe it? soft prose like cottony clouds on a summer's day, with an emotional depth that leaves me gasping for more. my personal favs are scintilla and nexilis but every word is a treat.

works by @voxamcris - chock full of beauty, help. her historical aus! hidden featuring a swordsman! kita shinsuke has my whole heart but seriously. im lucky to have read any of yuki's works. it's a privilege, a blessing - it makes me in awe of her sheer talent.

hi rowannn, would you mind sharing what makes you write so well and what inspire you? do you read a lot? because honestly, all of your works (I would preferably call them masterpiece) they are absolutely beautiful and awesome! okay so i’ve put my responses to your questions under a read more because apparently i’m literally incapable of shutting up! thank you for being so unbelievably lovely to me and for letting me ramble T-T

what inspires me

this is a cop-out answer, but a wide variety of things. i’m a big fantasy fan and that comes through in my original fiction, but something that definitely inspires pretty much all of my writing is ‘human emotion’. i know that sounds very simple, but i like grounding whatever i’m writing in the very real and raw experience of feelings; whether that be in something more angsty or overwhelmingly fluffy. 

i also get inspired by ‘quiet moments’; i think there can be really profound things in the everyday, and they’re multitudinous. also, i just like writing about love -- all kinds of love, between all kinds of people. 

oh, and hope. i like to write about that. 

in terms of advice for how to find inspiration, i like using what neil gaiman called a compost heap -- just a diary or document where you put down everything that inspires, interests or strikes you. it can be anything; norse mythology, cherry blossoms, the girl you saw at the shopping centre... anything. then, when you’ve build it up, you can start melding ideas together to find something that really excites you.

so the process is different for everyone (for example, yue/@/stelleum finds that reading good fic is what helps her improve her writing), and it’s important to figure out what works for you. 

admittedly, i don’t read even half as much as i should; i’m very easily distracted and when it comes to content consumption i either spend fifteen minutes with it and then forget about it for three months, or i consume it in a blur of 48 hours. 

THAT BEING SAID, reading is a really good way of getting better! by reading other people’s work, whether that be fanfic or published fiction, you can figure out what you do and don’t like. i think that naturally, we tend to pick up the habits and whatnot of things we like; i know i pick up my friends little habits and verbal quirks all the time fdklfdslk. 

for me, practice and consistently writing has helped me a lot. writing for this blog is the first time in a long while where i’ve kept up a consistent habit of writing. and honestly, if you compare my early work on this blog to what i’m putting out now, there’s a marked difference. 

i haven’t done this personally, but i think a good idea might be to keep a little notebook! write down things you like in the stuff you’ve read (for example, i look at neil gaiman and i’d go “atmosphere, use of subtle humour”, or i might look at ren/@/w-yuren’s stuff and go “setting, tone”). it’ll give you a good, solid list of what you value in the media you consume, and that’ll help taper your goals in your own writing. 

then, with your own work, keep a list of the things you’d like to improve on! my list currently includes settings, flow, consistency in character movement, etc. 

but most of all, it’s important to find your voice! i harp on about it a lot, but i feel like in fanfic spaces there can be this pressure to write a certain way. or, rather, certain styles of writing become popular, and then people try and emulate it because they admire it. but, sometimes doing that can smother your own voice, which will always be stronger than trying to replicate a style you think is pretty or impressive or technical. 

also, not to sound redundant, but it’s important to have fun, especially if you’re writing as a hobby. you don’t need to write for anyone but yourself (although, if you want to get into writing publishable fiction, it is good to have an idea of who your target audience is), and if something just isn’t working for you -- don’t be afraid to scrap or rework it. 

honestly, i think a big thing i look for in fics i read is the genuine love for writing the author has. and that, more than anything, is the crucial je ne sais quoi of what makes good writing imo. if someone doesn’t actually enjoy writing, or they’re doing it for reasons other than adoring the craft, that usually comes through. 

furthermore, loving what you’re doing encourages you to grow and better yourself. it also helps keep you afloat if you’re not getting much feedback (some of my most beloved fics are the ones with the least amount of notes -- but they’re still valuable, and i’m really not disappointed by the reception because they meant a lot to me, both as a person and a writer). 

but, if you’re feeling burnt out or elements of fanfic culture are getting to you, don’t be afraid to take breaks. and during those breaks, take a moment to revaluate: what am i writing for? do i enjoy it? does it make me happy? do i feel like i’m gaining anything personal out of it? or are there other hobbies i could try that won’t bring me as much stress? can i split my time between things? etc. i’ve done that myself, and it’s been very helpful during down periods (for example, i figured out scrolling the dash can sometimes make me very insecure, so i’ve stopped doing that as often -- already some significant improvements in my self-esteem!)

writing can be incredibly challenging at times, and i (and many others) have been quite frustrated with certain pieces. sometimes, it’s good to push through the challenge, especially if you feel like it’d be conducive for growth. but if it’s just annoying, put it aside! and don’t feel bad about doing so; we’re supposed to be here for a good time. make the most of it.

Summary: Yuuta decides to question Miren when he chose to ruin his weekly gardening session. So Miren's only solution at the time was to offer him food.

Yuuta was having a wonderful time.

Gardening was a passion of his. A comfort he'd confide in whenever there came a time when he just needed to create a rift between himself and the rest of the world.

His touch against the white rose in his hand was gentle, a contrast to the proud and devious smile on his face.

"I'll never understand why Heartslabyul doesn't just leave these roses white…. Probably something I forgot about from the movie." Yuuta murmured, feeling rather petty enough to chop off the red roses instead of the white ones.

He knew Riddle would've given him a lecture over the rules of the queen of hearts, but honestly, Yuuta could hardly care less.

His gloves were like a second skin to him, something that was conceived when he was born.

He hummed, touching the lotus in his hands."My symbol of wealth…." He fought back another chuckle before he continued walking around the botanical garden.

He had managed to narrowly avoid disturbing Leona's regular naps, as well as managing to convince Grim that he'd chop him in half if he ever did anything to disturb his gardening.

But unfortunately for the young man, Miren ended up bumping into him as he was wandering around the botanical garden.

And that irked Yuuta. He sent Miren a scowl, along with showing the vein on his forehead.

Miren blinked with wide eyes for only a moment.

"I-I apologize…"

Yuuta clicked his tongue, visibly annoyed."You better be. You interrupted my alone time." The tone in Yuuta's voice was enough for Miren to understand one thing.

That gardening meant more to Yuuta than he initially thought.

Miren gulped, "Sorry…" he muttered, looking away from Yuuta's direction with a nervous smile.

Yuuta's eyes narrowed. He put the watering can he had been holding to cross his arms. He looked down at Miren like he was a mere speck of dust that needed to be removed.

The cold stare he gave him had Miren realize another thing. That Yuuta should never be disturbed whenever he's gardening.

After those fleeting moments of total silence, Miren gulped and cleared his throat.

Yuuta arched a brow at him."What now?" He questioned, appearing impatient for whatever Miren had to say.

Miren had to take a breath before he could respond."I… Can offer you food." He suggested.

Yuuta's lips parted once he said those words, but Miren noticed how unimpressed he was with his suggestion. Which… Is unsurprising.

"Seriously?"

"Y-Yeah-"

"Food isn't gonna change the fact that you've ruined my mood, you utter disturbance."

It was Miren's turn to narrow his eyes."This guy is more easily irritated than I thought…" he muttered as quietly as he could.

"What was that?" Unfortunately for him, Yuuta had managed to hear him.

"Nothing!- Uh- How about you just try the food?"

Although Yuuta turned away from Miren, he kept eye contact with them."Depends. What kind of food is it?" Yuuta's voice sounded like he was requesting an immediate answer.

To which Miren gladly obliged, just so he doesn't get even more upset at him. So he held the food he was holding out for Yuuta to see.

"Donkkaseu, it's basically a breaded pork cutlet…" Miren stated. His smile became even more awkward, and he didn't know how Yuuta would respond.

In response, Yuuta pursed his lips."Seriously? That's your offering for my forgiveness?" Yuuta criticized.

Now Miren was starting to get a little more than pissed at the taller young man in front of him."It's not like I bring a feast everywhere I go." He retaliated, deciding to show a little more of his annoyance.

"Oh please. Aren't you a good cook?"

"Of course you know I am, I'm literally the one who makes breakfast."

Yuuta rolled his eyes."That doesn't change the fact that food isn't gonna be the solution to my bitter mood."

This time? It was Miren's turn to have an unnaturally visible vein on his forehead.

"Just eat the damn food, Yuuta."

Frustrated by his insistence, Yuuta took the donkkaseu from Miren's hands and shoved it into his mouth.

And immediately Miren noticed the change in his expression.

His eyes softened and his face didn't look as irritated after the first couple of bites. And his neutrality transitioned into having literal sparkles in his eyes.

After swallowing the donkkaseu, Yuuta felt a faint blush on his cheeks and looked away.

Miren saw this as an opportunity to affectionately make fun of him.

"You liked it, didn't you?"

"No comment."

Miren didn't fight back his snort."C'mon, Yuuta. Admit it already."

"Absolutely not."

"You've got to be- Yuuta, just admit that you like the donkkaseu. It isn't that difficult."

After what felt like hours of bickering, Yuuta groaned as he rolled his eyes. Miren was surprised his eyes weren't stuck at the back of his head from how many times he's rolled them.

But at least his answer was worth it. For Miren, at least.

"F-Fine….. I guess I did like it a lot more than I thought."

okay so number 1 on this list has to go to @amjustagirl my queen of imagery literally all her metaphors are SO well thought out im in awe everytime i read something of hers 🥺 if i had even a smidge of her talent i promise you i'd be looking for a career in creative writing by now

a very close number 2 would be my beloved @ufo-ikawa i havent read her recent fics but i can tell you now without hesitation that if you have the time & capacity to be flooded with emotions (unlike me </3) i would recommend them to you with my whole heart (for lovers who hesitate, commas of care, this summer i..., the world starts and ends with you!)

spot number 3 goes to the one and only @sakusins who had me reading fics for characters i didnt even know like no joke shes insane she singlehandedly got me to watch & read tr and she's the only person i'd ever read hanma & gyutaro from

number 4 is none other than @heich0e i got pulled in by her haikyuu fics but i learned she's also crazy good at writing aot and has an aot longfic in the works so i read the few snippets of it that she posts and suddenly im at s3 in just 5 days🧎🏻‍♀️

fifth is shared by @sourstars bc if nikki jie was brilliant at weaving imagery throughout her multichapter fics, pandora is incredible at jampacking her metaphors into shorter pieces without losing any of the emotional impact

and also @chimielie bc i love the way lia writes reader and how lovesick the boys always are and she has such a unique writing style that i do not have the vocabulary to describe but i would bet that if you let me read one of her fics without showing me her url i would probably be able to tell it's her

and because i am literally incapable of shutting up here are other writers whose masterlists i havent gotten the chance to go through but you can bet your life savings ill be spamming them with rbs if i survive the semester

@eightonenine's osamu and omi pieces have my heart in a vice grip but i also would read tsukki and hirugami just for her

@sunkeiji sayu has stopped writing but as long as she doesnt suddenly delete her writing blog impulsively i WILL go through the rest of her works bc theyre always so sweet :(

@shinunaki has me reading for characters ive never even simped for before (kagami, goshiki,, aran,,,,and i have a feeling shion soon teehee) and now im at least a litol bit in love with them after reading just one fic from him

@augustinewrites she writes such a wide variety of fics and every single one of them is so cute and unique and appeals to my tiny lil heart one day ill sit down and read her entire masterlist in one go dont even try me

@kentoangel roma's fics are always so full of love it is impossible to read her pieces and not be buzzing with serotonin in my veins by the end of it

@nakizumie cant wait to read her older works bc ive only read her newer ones and i just know all her stuff is gonna be so good i can feel it in my bones

@aominology has these really long bulleted fics and other long fics that ive been dying to read bc her drabbles are already have me clutching at my heart

@kairakeiji bc she is a master at switching povs so subtly and the boys are pining SO hard it makes me yearn but also reader loves them just as much which makes it so sweet :(

@duino is another underrated longfic writer she includes so many subtle details that all add up to just fill my whole being with happiness and love by the end of it

@luvbub you know how when reading hcs you might just skip to your faves and ignore those you dont simp for? yeah that's impossible when it's bub's hcs i literally cannot resist i end up reading every single character

@yurens bc she weaves words together so beautifully and her works are on the longer side too so i have to save them for when i can appreciate them properly (my beloved yurens if you dont want to be tagged pls let me know sobs)

@arhvste i think she went on a hiatus but then she came back and posted banger after banger like it was nothing she has the sweetest ways of showing love

@peachysamu i wanna read the stuff shes been posting on her new blog but also i am panic binge reading her whole masterlist on here in case she decides to delete this blog sobs

oh gosh thank you for your compliment but there are really so many wonderful, talented authors that i love here (and on ao3) too! lemme take the chance to share the love, if you don't mind:

@miyachondria - i prob embarrass myself about how fking much i adore and admire bee's work. dearly beloved, patches of light, redmancy, waltz of four left feet are some of my personal favourites.

@sunamour -rach needs no introduction, pls. look to her for amazing angst, esp her work on suna and 'samu.

@myelocin - nicole is ridiculously talented and also needs zero introduction (and she takes comms, so look her up!). she writes poetry in prose, and it's so ethereal and beautiful i cld cry. on the faded side of photograph is a personal favourite of mine.

@gossamerisms - personal bias, but dee is super versatile and funny and her works are super punchy.

@oikawakuns - been obsessed with flora's work. bloody amazing wtf, her osamu pieces chances made me cry. it's so simple but the emotions are so raw and real. amazing.

@w-yuren - another writer that needs zero introduction, but yuren's work is subtle and emotional and has beautiful imagery that makes you feel everything from the characters' pov.

@eightonenine - yvonne writes adorable bits of slice of life fluff that just makes a bad day a good day, yknow? i love love her sakusa pieces, her bokuto blanket fort fic made me squeal and her tsukki fic is just...real.

@violetsoju - lin writes super cute, imaginative pieces - her sakusa piece in the club was mega refreshing, her suna motorcyclist fic was just fluffy i cld dieee and her atsumu kpop fic? ackkk.

@star-puff -meg writes like an angel. i love so many of her pieces i can't name them all <3

@voxamcris - i cld screech all day about yuki's work. but i will sound a bit mad if i do. all that glitters is beautiful, her kita swordsman fic is a masterpiece and i srsly turn on notifs in the hope im blessed with her work.
