A little appreciation fic', for @the-writing-artist's fic The Boy in the Computer, because I was rereading the 4th chapter of The Girl from the Outside, and I'm frustrated to not be able to write the next part of my own fic' yet. Set between the s1 and s2 (that I'll write as soon as possible) for We'll Get Close To the Light and after the end of s4 for The Boy in The Computer.

Encounter of the Multiverse

Emmanuel-Jean felt his eyes closing, despite all his motivation and effort to stay awake. He had a terrible night last night, and morning classes just exacerbated his exhaustion. But he didn’t want to miss being with his friends just because of his stupid exhaustion!! They had promised to take Aelita to the aquarium and the zoo! Yeah, no. He was NOT going to-

“Rimbaud, you’re staying here,” said Odd abruptly. “You look like a corpse. Or worse, Einstein after PE.”

All of Emmanuel-Jean’s friends giggled except Jeremie, who looked at the eccentric of the group with an annoyed look.

“Wha-No!” replied Emmanuel-Jean, frustrated. “I can perfectly-”

He accidentally cut himself off as he was overcome by a sudden yawning. The others looked at him with the most skeptical eyes he had ever seen.

“Manu,” said Ulrich, “don’t worry about the zoo. We’ll go somewhere else today, and we’ll go to the zoo and the aquarium with the whole band some other time.”

“But-”

“Before you say anything,” intervened Aelita, “no, it doesn’t bother me as much as you being tired like that. You should get some sleep.”

“I-”

“I’m not gonna let you be an idiot insomniac,” interrupted Jeremie, “when you stop me from being one, Emmanuel.”

“. . .”

“Come on Manu,” said Yumi with a smile, “you earned a break. And when you’ve slept some, you can very well join us.”

Facing all this opposition, the brown-haired sleepy mess that was Emmanuel-Jean could only yield. And that’s how he ended up in his bed, grumpy as a bear. But, just as he was rumbling in his thoughts, sleep took him over.

However, just as quickly as he closed his eyes, he opened them, finding himself in… an empty dark space, full of stars all around him. He was floating in this space, alone. But he was not stressed. After all, this was all a dream, right? And most of all, he felt comfortable. Like he was being tugged into warm blankets.

“Huh? Who are you?” He suddenly heard a voice behind him ask.

He recognized that voice and knew who it was before he even turned around. Aelita. But why? And what were those clothes? Not like it wasn’t her style, but he could swear he never saw her wearing that dress with yellow flowers, or that pink jacket. Oh well. Dreams, especially his dreams, rarely made sense.

“Oh hey, Aelita.” Emmanuel-Jean with a laugh. “And here I was worried I could not spend time with you and the others. Are they here by the way?”

The girl’s reaction was however not what he expected. A look of pure confusion was plastered on her facce, like she didn’t understand what he said at all. Or, rather, she was confused by his entire being.

Suddenly, a light crossed her green eyes, as if she reached enlightenment.

“Oh right!” she said. “I remember now! This is the Multi-Void!”

“The what?” asked Emmanuel-Jean, confused.

“The Multi-Void.” repeated Aelita. “A space between universes, which we can reach when we fall asleep.” she added with a smile. “A place where we can encounter other versions of ourselves, or of our loved ones.”

…Okay, this was going really far for a dream. Even for him.

“Wait…” said the boy, trying to arrange his thoughts. “So you’re saying you’re another version of Aelita? The Aelita I know?”

“Exactly!” confirmed the pink-ette with a proud smile. “I’m Aelita Schaeffer, and I’m the cousin of Odd Della Robbia.”

“Cousin?” asked the brown-haired teen, surprised. “You’re human in your universe?”

“Human?” asked Aelita surprised. “Wait, was I the trapped one in your universe too?”

“You mean inside the supercomputer?” asked the brown-haired teen. “Uh, yeah? Wait, does that mean my Aelita is a human too?”

Aelita stayed silent, visibly thinking. Suddenly, she jerked her head up, an apologetic look on her face.

“Oh I’m sorry,” she said, “I was so caught up in the multiverse thing that I forgot to ask your name. I don’t think I ever saw you at Kadic in my world.”

“Oh…” replied the other, shocked. “Uh, don’t worry about it. I understand. I’m Emmanuel-Jean DeRobert.”

“Glad to make your acquaintance Emmanuel-Jean!” said the pink-ette with a smile, extending her hand.

The boy shook it absent-mindedly. Part of the boy was hurt to think that he wasn’t with the ones he considered his only friends in that other universe. And that must have reflected on his face, because Aelita immediately asked with a worried voice:

“Emmanuel-Jean? Is there a problem?”

Oh well… it was not like he could try to hide his discomfort now.

“Oh it’s nothing, it's just…” he explained with a sad smile. “I… I never had any friends before meeting you all so… I… feel bad for my other self… Though maybe he didn’t get bullied at his old schools, like I was…”

Wait, it was still “Aelita” he was talking to!

“Don’t apologize, please!” he added quickly. “It’s just a thought, that’s all!”

Aelita looked at him with confusion first, then with amusement.

“Do my counterpart apologize a lot?” she asked with a smile.

“Uh…” smiled awkwardly Emmanuel-Jean, “Almost as much as me…”

Aelita laughed, and the boy followed quickly after.

“She sounds a lot like ‘my’ Jeremie.” said the pink-ette after calming a bit. “Well, during his stay in the supercomputer.”

“Wait!” said Emmanuel-Jean, shocked. “It was Jeremie that was in the supercomputer? Wow…”

“Yes,” smiled Aelita, “and I’m the one who discovered him.”

“Oh, wow.” smiled Emmanuel-Jean. “It was the exact opposite for us. Jeremie booted up the supercomputer, and he found you inside it. Seems like you two are destined to meet each other.” the brown-haired boy added mischievously.

Aelita reddened, but, far from being embarrassed, she smiled proudly.

“Oh, we did way more than just meet!” she said. “My boyfriend and I are traveling all around the world!”

That’s it. Emmanuel-Jean could die happy.

“You’re together!?” he nearly shouted excitedly. “Oh my god, congrats!! I’m so happy for you two!!”

Aelita laughed.

“You seem overly interested in the subject…” she joked.

“Well…” smiled Emmanuel-Jean awkwardly, embarrassed by his sudden outburst. “I mean… you two are made for each other and… and I know that being together will just make you the happiest couple on Earth. And there’s nothing I would wish more for you than that.”

Aelita smiled, but it didn’t completely reach her eyes.

“Is there a problem?” asked Emmanuel-Jean immediately worried.

“We…” started Aelita after a moment. “We are happy. But… Jeremie still sacrificed so much for our win…”

“...Our win? Sacrificed?”

Okay, before he was worried. Now, he was concerned. What was she talking about?

“...During our quest to free Jeremie,” explained Aelita softly, “XANA found a way to escape the supercomputer. We decided to erase him once and for all, and we did it. But for that, Jeremie’s parents, who were the one who created Lyoko, the supercomputer and XANA, powered the program to end him. With their life. And… Jeremie still misses them… And I.. can’t help but feel… guilty about that. If only I could have.. done more-”

Aelita was suddenly interrupted by Emmanuel-Jean, who hugged her, as she was visibly more and more upset by that memory. Aelita didn’t react, too surprised.

“I’m so sorry to hear that,” said Emmanuel-Jean with a voice heavy with emotions. “You… you guys deserve the world. And I mean it. And… and I’m… so sorry to hear that you suffered…”

The pink-ette let a smile form on her face. She was about to return the embrace when suddenly, Emmanuel-Jean pulled back, with an embarrassed look on his face.

“Sorry about that,” he muttered flustered, and looking down, “I huh.. kinda forget that we’re basically strangers…”

“No problem.” smiled Aelita. “It helped.”

Emmanuel-Jean smiled tightly, before looking around.

“Do you know how long we stay here? Not that I don’t like being around you at all, it’s not the case at all!” he added quickly. “But… I don’t really know how much time passed and…”

“Don’t worry, I understand.” replied Aelita with a laugh. “As to how you can leave… you have to think about leaving?” she added. “Well, that's what he told me.”

“He?” asked Emmanuel-Jean curious.

“Another Jeremie,” she explained. “The one responsible for the multiverse, or so he thinks. The one who told me what I know.”

“Of course, it had to be him…” commented Emmanuel-Jean with a laugh.

“You seem to know him well,” replied Aelita with a smile.

“I joined the Lyoko Warriors a year after they started their fight against XANA,” explained Emmanuel-Jean. “But I started to talk with Jeremie before he even discovered the supercomputer. He was the very first person I saw as a friend. He’s even my best friend. But the others are awesome too. Talking about them, how are they in your world?”

“Oh, well…” said Aelita thinking, “Ulrich and Yumi are finally together and since it’s summer, they decided to do a road trip in Japan with one of Yumi's uncles.”

“They’re together?” laughed Emmanuel-Jean. “Odd would cry tears of joy if he heard that.”

“Speaking of Odd,” giggled Aelita, “he and Samantha are with us, since we’re visiting Italy.”

“Samantha?” asked Emmanuel-Jean. “Huh… I don’t.. recall a Samantha… But it’s really nice of him to accompany you and Jeremie in Italy. You seem all so close, it’s incredible.”

“Yeah,” smiled Aelita, “We’re a family, and nothing could change that fact. And I hope you all will be as close as we were.. no, as we are.”

Emmanuel-Jean smiled too.

“I… I like to think we are,” he answered with a warm heart. “And… I’m… really lucky to have met you Aelita. I mean it. And not only “my” Aelita. You, Aelita Schaeffer. I’m glad you could save Jeremie, that you could offer him the life he deserved. I’m glad that Ulrich and Yumi could finally be honest with each other, and that Odd could still be true to himself after all that. I’m… I’m so, so happy for you all.”

“...Thank you for your kind feelings…” said Aelita with emotion. “It means a lot…”

Suddenly, Emmanuel-Jean felt himself being… slipping away.

“Wha-What’s happening? I’m leaving?!” said the boy worried.

“Seems like it.” smiled Aelita.

“Wa-Wait NO!” shouted Emmanuel-Jean, trying his best not to be swept away by the unknown forces that were pushing him. “I... I want to talk more! I want to help you feel better! I-I-..!”

“Until next time!” replied Aelita with a beaming smile. “And don’t worry, you already did!”

Emmanuel-Jean felt his eyes open, but closed them immediately. So much light?! Why weren’t the curtains drawn? Wait… He remembered. He decided to keep them open, because he didn’t want to sleep, and wanted to go with his friends.

Emmanuel-Jean sat on his bed. He wasn’t exhausted anymore. And he wasn’t as grumpy as before. In fact, he was… happy…? Why? He felt like there was something that happened… But how? He was sleeping! A dream then? But what kind of dream could have made him so joyous that he forgot about his bad mood?

Knock-knock-knock

“Emmanuel?” Jeremie’s voice asked softly from behind the door. “Are you awake?”

“Yeah!” replied Emmanuel-Jean with enthusiasm. “Come in!”

Well, he must have dreamt about his friends. Because there was no way he could not find happiness with them. And for them, he was willing to go to the end of the world. And with them, he wanted to see the whole world. Huh. The last reflection was new. Wondered where it came from...

Tsurune Character Songs Album Review

We had a lot of thoughts about these songs while working with the lyrics, so we decided to do a mini album review! Please enjoy listening to each songs as we reflect on the lyrics and composition~

Up Stairs

Mod Yumi: A very gentle, comforting song, as expected from a Minato/Seiya duet. The composers did an excellent job capturing the feeling of nostalgia; this somehow feels like a song I've known and loved for years. The lyrics are perfect--I love the references to the bridge scene from s1 ep10. The line "I had a place where my heart could relax" is so precious <3 Overall, I don't think it's the strongest song on the album, but it's definitely one of my top faves!

Mod Optimus Prime: A heartfelt way to start off the album! It's very sweet and mellow, which of course really fits the fact that, y'know, the song is about Minato and Seiya's relationship! It's more or less just a straight callback to all of season one, but it's really touching how (both literally and figuratively) they come together at the end there.

Crossover

Mod Yumi: This song is so excessively dramatic and I kinda love it?? It does NOT sound like a song that ties into a soothing, chill slice of life archery anime and I am here for it. But I'm also weak for synth horns; give me a cheesy overexuberant fake brass section and I'm sold. Bonus points for all of the archery references and unnecessarily homoerotic lyrics. (And special shoutout to Mod Optimus Prime, our resident FukuJun stan, for helping me with the color codes because I was completely lost lmao)

Mod Optimus Prime: Probably the character duo song with the most...attitude to it? And sass, which of course, fits these two incredibly troublesome boys. To me, it's almost like the two are having a back-and-forth with each other while also brazenly admitting to each other just how tangled up they are—admittedly a reoccurring theme for the duet songs, but that doesn't make it any less cute, I think!

Ari no Mama de

Mod Yumi: Very cute and wholesome, doesn't really do it for me in terms of composition though. I do think this is the most well-acted song on the album. Having heard both of these seiyuu sing as other characters (notably Suzuki Ryouta as Bisco from Sabikui Bisco and Yano Shougo as Mafuyu from Given), I was blown away by how different they both managed to sound! Changing your voice to that extent while singing is not an easy thing to do. I was also tickled by the fact that they both noticeably sang less well than I know they're both capable of singing, because it suited the characters better to do so. Listening to this song, you wouldn't think either of these singers are particularly talented, but that fact is proof in and of itself that they ARE talented. Mad respect for the skill displayed here!

Mod Optimus Prime: Unsurprisingly, sunshine boy Ryouhei and the other local cheery boy have an easygoing and slow duet! I can't really say too much aside from the fact that the lyrics are both just really cute and earnest—you can see Ryouhei's influence here, haha.

Growing Up

Mod Yumi: Very cute, very catchy! I enjoy this song a lot. As a side note, I find it interesting that besides Minato, Nanao is the only character to be featured in two songs. One of the things I like about Nanao is that he's characterized mainly through his relationships with other characters. Sometimes when we see this happening it's more to do with lazy character writing (and lbr, it usually happens with female characters). But in this case, it actually builds our understanding of the character, rather than just casting him into the side character role of 'only here to develop the MCs'. To me it's always felt like he's the most put-together of the team, watching over everyone else and giving them a nudge in the right direction, while blending in so effortlessly they don't suspect a thing, like the social chameleon he is. Oops, this just turned into me gushing about Tsurune character writing lol. The song's nice idk what else to tell ya

Mod Optimus Prime: Also yet another honest song—a rare thing for Kacchan! It's obviously about Kaito and Nanao's close friendship and the further development during season two, so it's fitting we also get to see more of Nanao's (somewhat hidden) stubborn side here. Not to meme here, but really shows how their relationship fits the, "the more things change, the more things stay the same," aka them supporting ("protecting") each other through thick and thin.

Gekkou

Mod Yumi: I'm not the biggest fan of the composition of this song. I can't put my finger on why, but the main melody isn't working for me (and doesn't work great for Asashin's voice either tbh). That said, the backing track lives rent free in my head, I'm OBSESSED. And I love the dreamy feel of the lyrics! Whereas the others feel more like a dialogue between the singers, this one feels like a poem. The ethereal quality of the music and the lyrics draws me back to Masa-san's introduction, when he was a cryptid/ghost (lmao) appearing in the dead of night to guide Minato back to archery

Mod Optimus Prime: I've only heard Asanuma Shintarou (Masaki's VA) sing in a higher register, so this was both surprising and pleasant—it's quite soothing to hear! It's also fitting that the only Real Adult™️ with bounds of experience compared to these young'uns gets a really poetic and dramatic song with, of course, lots of moon references.

Kyoumei

Mod Yumi: THIS IS THE BEST ONE. This song is a legit bop omg. Leave it to luck life to give us a character song that exceeds typical character songs! I also love the meaning of the lyrics; it almost feels like a new angle on the Shuu/Minato relationship in a way? Of course we know their history and their affectionate rivalry, but we don't really see either of them putting into words how they feel about each other (especially Shuu-- I had to laugh at the line "we didn't need mundane words"; like no dude we could actually use a few more words from you, given your track record of communicating approximately 7% of your thoughts smh). This song puts into words how much they mean to each other and how, despite their complicated history and rivalry, they still care about each other.

Mod Optimus Prime: Luck Life actually composed this song, which really shows in the style (that catchy guitar, anyone?)! I adore the constant references to "sounds"—while a bit cheesy and on those nose, of course, it fits these two to a T and calls back to that season one finale. Again, not that any of the songs are really subtle, but "We might be apart, but I believe we'll someday return / So we didn't need mundane words" really just sums up their unique friendship/rivalry. Also, love how the two only sing together at the end: really fits with the song's whole message/theme about the two being separated, but eventually reuniting! How sweet.

omg i would love to hear more about the Bystander “Odd-shot” AU! Would Yumi just be more a background character like Sissi or would she eventually make her way to the gang? And how would that affect William eventually joining the gang (if he ever did)? Also love that there would be some extra Odd/Ulrich scenes! Anything specific planned for those two?

Awww thank you for being my first ask haha ;-; (other people can ask away too I'm not gonna be bothered about it and I'll try to write back when I can lmao)

Recapping Bystander = "Kiwi isn't brought to Kadic AU"

I'm gonna use the "keep reading" so I don't flood people's dashes given I chat away a Lot at the basics. The way I see the background for "Bystander" developing is that:

Given no Kiwi, it's Odd annoying Ulrich that quickly reminds him of his promise to check on Jeremie later that day. Hence this is how he winds up finding Jeremie getting attacked by XANA and thus his involvement with this whole conflict begins.

Without a "guinea pig" to think of, Ulrich begrudgingly offers to test run the scanners. He never goes back to the dorms that night.

Yumi would still wind up with the gang given Jim hosting the Pencak Silat club. It still winds up letting Ulrich and Yumi interact more, and hence when the XANA attack of the day occurs again she still heads to Lyoko to help stop the AI for that day.

Sissi is an interesting case in this AU. Clearly she wouldn't find out about the supercomputer given Ulrich didn't go back to the dorms. Honestly I think her friction with the gang doesn't happen on the same level as canon. She'd still be jealous of Yumi hanging around Ulrich but there's no active reason for her to spitefully get the gang in trouble whenever they're mean to her because there's no general quarrel to begin with.

I think Ulrich and Sissi would still be friends rather than the group just using her -> her either forgetting about it thanks to a RTTP or it gets brushed off like canon usually does.

Odd's role in this story given he's not involved with fighting XANA would be more of a confidant for Ulrich. Ulrich has to put up with his new roommate. So it'll take a bit longer for them to bond compared to canon forcing their hand so they can be a decent team.

I think it'd be beginning of Season 2 where the gang throw in the towel and realize they need another member. William still is on the table given his new status and the fact that he's still, at the end of the day, very helpful. Odd is also brought up as a candidate due to convenience + longevity at the school.

Odd has grown on Ulrich throughout Season 1. Ulrich and Yumi have also went through their mini-arc re: their relationship in the S1 mesh. Ulrich came to terms with having feeling for Odd, although he's a bit conflicted given that Odd is a good friend + he's basically the one dragging him back down to reality instead of worrying about XANA and the supercomputer all the time.

Ulrich doesn't want to involve Odd because he doesn't want to let this normalcy go. He's the one to prevent Odd from getting on the team in S2, while William is given the "OK" given Yumi hasn't gotten to see the shenanigans/behavior William can exhibit in the small amount of time getting to know him.

Honestly interesting to think about how William grows in this AU without Ulrich/Yumi dragging him into a love triangle.

Thinking about the Odd/Ulrich ship in this AU is neat because it's Ulrich getting to hang out with someone that isn't involved in this mess. It's not just "ah shit school + XANA 24/7". Sure, Odd is annoying and it takes time for the boy to grow on Ulrich but I imagine having a unknowing confidant lets them still bond faster than the average roommates.

Moments like asking Odd for help getting Jeremie in trouble (Holiday in the Fog), stealing some phones back (Satellite), general soccer/football activity (Claustrophobia; Zero Gravity Zone) would be some soft moments for Ulrich. He's even scared half to death when hearing from Yumi that Odd went back into the building to save Milly and Tamiya (Just in Time). I'm not gonna prattle much on Amnesia/Killer Music either but those premises would likely go off here lmao (Amnesia especially since it'd lend credence to Odd's side of the ship a lot more in particular)

I think Routine would be the most interesting episode to use as a baseline in this AU. I wonder if Emily would even be involved again, or would it just be Ulrich goofing off with Odd and getting friction from Yumi because she's jealous that he's able to hang out with his peers.

I imagine being Lyoko Warriors having to worry about XANA all the time gets a little lonely. Not being able to tell anyone about this secret, struggling to remember what exactly has been said before that a RTTP has stripped away. Yumi can't exactly have a stable bond with her family at times, and Ulrich/Jeremie/Aelita aren't in her class either. Must be pretty lonely and honestly I would get why she'd be a bit peeved that Ulrich wanted to change the routine so bad which would leave her alone (as Jeremie is gonna be heavily focused on freeing Aelita so their troubles with the supercomputer are over).

Right speaking on Aelita. To wrap this up given this is so long haha, I'd like to imagine it's the combined efforts of Ulrich and Jeremie that convince Odd to play off Aelita as a cousin to the school. A well-intended lie and all that.

yumi & harumi 🪷🕷 snippet (season 15, crystallized) under the cut!

their dynamic is actually so toxic and fun it hurts almost... they're not supposed to be romantic but they do emit more yuri vibes than they should

(also 🪷🍀 endgame is. such a long road. from s1~s4 lloyd likes yumi first (in a puppy crush way), then s5~s15 yumi likes lloyd back (but in a kind of tsun/tease way) but lloyd doesn't realize it & yumi thinks its for the better bc he doesn't want to be a weakness to lloyd) (they become boyfriends after crystallized... yay!!!)

Harumi warily watched the fox-eared teen slumped against the pillar he was chained to.

The vengestone glinted an eerie hue of orchid against the bloodied hanfu of the pink-haired boy and the pillar of crystal pulsed as if it had a heartbeat. Wounds littered Yumi's body, gnashes and cuts visible through the sheer and delicate fabric.

"You're pathetic," Harumi scoffed.

She was met with a razor sharp glare from Yumi who lifted his head up and woke his body from its lethargic state. Despite the thick disdain in his eyes, Harumi could see fear and timidity.

"What do you want, Harumi." Yumi's tail bristled with agitation, but his voice was slightly raspy and unthreatening. His pink hair was dulled and unkempt, haloing his face messily in a way Harumi could describe as beautiful.

She was supposed to feel happy for causing considerable damage to Yumi and his life.

But she felt a weight of dissatisfied.

"It's my duty to check up on you." She curtly answered. Yumi huffed and turned his head away from her greedy eyes, which sunk its teeth on the sight of the Yāojing ninja so defeated.

"I'd rather you just kill me," One of Yumi's soft ears flickered in annoyance. "It's impossible trying to use only my blood, sweat, and tears to empower the Overlord's entire army."

Ever since he and Lloyd were found infiltrating the Crystal Council's meeting, Harumi had the pleasure of seperating and tomenting the two. Yumi was chained and skirmished almost every quarter of the day. His initial cries were loud enough to help Harumi convince Lloyd that the pink ninja was no longer with them.

In reality, Yumi was being farmed for his very essence. His blood was absorbed into the crystals that suffocated him and his screams fell on empty ears as the council each had their turn in honing their new powers.

"Don't be silly. Even if you could die, your own soul won't let you," Harumi crossed her arms, slowly inching towards the chained-up boy. "Isn't it so lovely? Being unable to die?"

She found herself at the edge of Yumi's tangled legs. The replacement of his gi to a simple hanfu reduced his image into a helpless boy. Yumi's bruised ankles peeked out from under the splattered cotton, but the sheerness led Harumi's eyes futher up his calves to right above his knees.

The white-haired girl bent down to Yumi's eye level and his gaze refused to meet hers.

"Lucky you. People who don't deserve to die still do." Harumi seethed through her tongue. Yumi found strength to roll his eyes and Harumi watched his glinting eyes, a soft purple casted from the shine of the crystals bleeded into his soft apricot and rosy pink irises.

She watched his throat flex and the scar that she left him. Yumi swallowed harshly and dryly opened his mouth.

"Like it's my fault I can't die," Yumi's tail now twitched in annoyance. "I'm no different from those people."

Harumi growled before standing her full length and slamming her foot onto one of Yumi's exposed ankles. He responded with a hiss of pain and it quickly melted into a warning growl bubbling in his throat.

"You don't deserve anything!" Harumi gritted her teeth. "You're nothing like an innocent person. You only think of yourself, you are the reason why so many people have died. Do you truly think you're innocent, Yuyu?"

The nickname she spat with venom caused Yumi to flinch harded, but his eyes became furious. Harumi was taken aback and lifted some weight from the pink-haired boy's ankle with means to create distance.

"I only think of myself." Yumi repeated. "I'm the one who thinks of myself?"

Yumi suddenly pulled himself up and the sudden energy and struggle against chains startled Harumi backwards even further. Another low growl emerges from his throat until Yumi snapped.

"You have no idea what it's like to be selfless! You have no heart! I don't understand what Lloyd even saw in you."

Harumi's eyes settled coldly on the frenzied Yāojing ninja.

"If you're not thinking about yourself, you're thinking about Lloyd," Harumi pursed her lips to mock pity at Yumi. "But even then, you treat him selfishly. You and I both know he likes you, yet you reject his love. You're heartless for leading him on."

That's when Yumi shattered all his self-resolve.

"I reject him for the good of his heart! I can't let him love me," Yumi's voice raised tremendously. With quivering breaths and teary, wild eyes, this image of Yumi burned itself into Harumi's mind.

"If I tell him I love him he'll do everything in his power to love me back. I can't risk that! I can't risk all of his life being poured into mine!" Yumi's cries became more unstable as he continued to try to struggle free from his imprisonment. "If he knew what I want, he would sacrifice it all." His voice trembled from screaming.

Harumi was silent. She watched Yumi's eyebrows knit and the tears threatened to spill from his exhausted eyes.

"He's sacrificed so much to love everyone, especially you," The pink-haired ninja collapsed onto his knees without warning. "I want that."

"I wanted to be loved unrelentlessly like how Lloyd loved you," Yumi lowered his gaze from Harumi, voice cracking into a high whimper. "I want to be selfish. I want to be as selfish you."

Harumi found herself back at Yumi's feet again but this time crouched down in front of him. Her limbs felt cold as she brushed her knee against Yumi's and he flinched away, shaking like a lost animal.

"You only think of yourself," Yumi cried into the chains wrapping him against the clean ridges of the crystal stabilizing him. Without another thought, Harumi's hands reached out to hold the crying teen's face.

"You're so selfish and even your stupid revenge is centered around you," The hiccups and stutters errupted against Harumi's calloused hands and she leaned forward to hold Yumi's head against the crook of her shoulder. "You have no idea how hard it to care about others."

Yumi continued to cry his vents into Harumi's quickly collapsing chest. She felt a dread she hasn't experienced in years.

With every insult the pink-haired ninja threw at her carelessly, the harder Harumi found it to breathe. It was hard to tell how long she had sat there even after the tears stopped wetting her skin.

Harumi was alone with her thoughts and the occasional flick of a soft and wispy fox ear brushing against her cheek.

Y'all know how much I love Woo Young-woo, do I really need to say it again?

3. Doom at Your Service

On a first watch I thought it was fine, there are some obvious issues with the plot/writing, but the more time that passes the more I love the characters. I'm a huge Park Bo-young and Seo In-guk fan so maybe that's why I just can't get it out of my head.

4. Twenty-Five Twenty One (weird that it ended at ep 15 tho...)

This was on track to being my favourite drama this year until EAW. I love an positive, over-the-top MC and Na Hee-do did not disappoint. As far as I'm concerned, episode 16 and the last 20 minutes or so of 15 don't exist.

Happy Code Swap Day dear @grubtism !

The prompt I took was "Aelita discovering new things about earth (such as her learning about being cold while walking with jeremie after her materialization in s1)" and here it is your typical filler episode on the beach where Aelita plays volleyball and watches the sunset (with Jerlita centered ofc).

I hope you can excuse my poor grammar since I'm not a native speaker. I was really about to cry when I was editing this but I'm afraid the tenses might have gone crazy at some point anyway. I hope again this doesn't stop you from enjoying the story. Have fun! @code-swap

The chink of trains passing by in this early spring morning were blending with distinctive rumble of a station, while announcements were fading in and out. Like in every big city, Paris had already woken up and was getting ready for the day, the wagons were full of people on their way to work in the country or planning a short weekend getaway. In one of them, three boys were sitting with their eyes on the big clock of the station, looking for something impatiently.

"They're gonna miss it, if they don't hurry up." complained Ulrich while looking back over his shoulder to the platform through the train's open door and turned his gaze back to his friends sitting across the table. The boy in the purple shirt was picking at his backpack's zip and glanced at the compartment quickly over his blonde friend next to him before answering Ulrich. "They should be there soon, don't worry."

The bag trembled with a rustling sound like something was pawing its way to reach the top, seconds later Jeremy was squinting at a panting dog that appeared between him and Odd.

"My little diggity-dog," Odd squealed while patting his head. "Soon you will run as much as you can." Kiwi licked his owner's hand as an answer, his wagging tail was showing how he was bursting with excitement for this unexpected trip.

"We risk being thrown off the train by bringing him with us." Jeremy addressed a remark to Kiwi, while glancing at his watch. He couldn't help but start to get grumpy, the absence of their other two friends that were supposed to be here a quarter hour ago, was worrying him a little bit. The boy decided to wait five more minutes before calling them.

"Kiwi is one of the other big risks that we take today, Einstein." bantered Odd with him, he knew that Jeremy deep down loves his dog too and it was always funny to him that Kiwi sometimes gets on people's nerves.

"Yeah Jeremy, speaking of that," Ulrich interrupted their conversation while raising his eyebrows "what do we do if our friend X.A.N.A attacks while we're away, huh?" He really loved the idea of showing Aelita around at first but by the time past and the girls continued not to show up, he was sharing the same concerns with Jeremy. He knew that the boy with glasses watches every step of Aelita like they all do and cares for her, wants to show how our world contains some wonders but everything is too new for now. Maybe they should have taken things easy like Yumi said before.

Jeremy crossed his arms, dropping his eyes to the table in front of him. He was very well aware about the fact Ulrich stated but he had his good reasons, so he tried to pick the right words to make the situation clear to them."We'll be only one hour ride away from city, so in case of an emergency we can go back quickly and you know, it wasn't long after his last attack." He tugged at his sleeve like brushing off the memories of recent events, they had a really narrow escape last time. "Besides I really wanted to show her the actual sea that is much more different from Lyoko's digital one." he continued while blushing with his confession.

"Just relax, both of you." Odd assured them while scratching behind of Kiwi's ears. "We'll get to see where Jeremy spends his summers, swim a little bit and then be back at the school by dinner. Just a little vacation and that's all."

Ulrich turned his gaze to look out of the train, the first glimpses of daylight were reflecting the boy's shade to the window and making it difficult for him to see the platform. "Let's hope he doesn't spare us a break." he sighed. The idea of a X.A.N.A attack while they're away was giving him shievers, he couldn't stress enough what a mess it might be.

The other boy sitting across from him nodded in agreement, staring off into the crowd on the station and taking a stroll down of his memories from Aelita's first night on earth that he walked her to Yumi's. Not just great to see her heal and hearty by his side but the thought of how even that little walk made her really happy had given the idea of today's trip to him. He really worked hard to make her real, to bring her to the earth but they couldn't managed to make X.A.N.A get off her tail, he is still with her, still theardening her life and Jeremy's hearth sinks everytime he catches the look on her eyes like a feral youngling scaring everything. He hates to let her make sacrifices to save the world and knowing this situation could go for a while drives him crazy. The boy wants her to be in safe, to make her feel safe forever and to tell her that he would never let X.A.N.A hurt her again but the so far he could only make her smile and that's enough for him to face to whole world. If this little trip would make her happy, then it worths to take the risk, he thinks. X.A.N.A can play all the tricks as he wants today but he won't back off to try to brighten up Aelita's day, not even a little.

A huge rumbling from the left disrupted his inner call-out to X.A.N.A. He scowled at Odd and Kiwi trying to decide who's making that sound while Ulrich bursting into laughs of Kiwi's confused look and Odd's querulously protests against Jeremy's judgemental glance.

"You should have let me have breakfast." grumbled Odd looking annoyed and folded his arms on his stomach. "A man has his needs"

"More like a dragon based on the sound that you made, if you ask me." Ulrich teased him.

Odd has just opened his mouth to answer him but his offended response was suppressed by a cheerful shout.

"Then it is a good thing that we brought all the snacks to feed up this dragon." a girl in black waved at them stepping into the train and followed by another girl with pink hair. Despite looking like two opposite ends of the color spectrum, pink sakura flowers on Yumi's shirt were matching perfectly with Aelita's hair.

"Finally!" squeaked Jeremy with a huge sigh of relief and continued his scolding "We were starting to worry".

"Good morning to you, too." Aelita responded to the boy half-mockingly and sat next to him.

"I'm sensing some Hiroki influences." Ulrich remarked, giggling at the girl's cynical answer and inched over to make room for Yumi.

"My kid brother's rich vocabulary is irresistible, I'm afraid." laughed off black haired girl while settling down and trying to get comfortable with her long body on the train's narrow seats. She took a paper bag from the inside of her bucket bag and threw it at Odd. "Here," girl said while Odd catching it on the air and lowering down to sniff it with Kiwi. "something to calm down your stomach."

"Someone with sense, thank you!" cheered the boy when he saw what the bag contains. He grab one of the croissants and took a big bite and immediately passed it down to his dog to split the difference. "Ulrich," then he called out his friend between his gulps "you should really go o-"

"-what took the two of you so long?" Ulrich interrupted him with a rush and on purpose, trying to ignore Jeremy and Aelita's gigglings, of course he knows what Odd is about to say.

"Well, Aelita worked so hard on our fruit salad." answered Yumi his question for the room, pointing out the tupperware that the pink haired girl is holding.

Aelita uncovered its lid and served it around. "Isn't it fascinating that fruits have all these different flavors and beautiful colors?" asked she mesmerizingly, you could tell about her excitement from her shining eyes. Finally, she took a lumpy and russet fruit from the inside and showed it to everyone. "I've never seen such a thing like that before."

"Having a hearty appetite runs in the family, as you can see." Odd determined, about to take the last bite from his apple. "We didn't make her my cousin for nothing."

"Yeah and may I ask why you bring a raw potato here?" questioned Ulrich, pointing to the fruit in Aelita's hands.

"It isn't a potato, it is a Jerusalem artichoke." Jeremy corrected him out of patience, while Yumi breaking into laughs. " and it is a species of sunflower native to-"

"Please give us a break from biology at least on the weekend, Einstein." Odd shutted him up and gave his biggest smile to Jeremy's glaring before changing the subject. "Speaking of fruits, you can't believe what Kiwi did this morning-" he started to tell Yumi.

"So it is a rare one, then?" Aelita turned to Jeremy, still examining the Jerusalem artichoke with other's chatter in the background.

"Yes, in this region I mean." gave the boy a quick answer to her before getting to the point. "Is everything alright at Yumi's?" Jeremy asked anxiously. He has no doubt that his Japanese friend is doing her best to host Aelita but he just wonders if their formally virtual friend is doing okay here.

"It couldn't be better, her family are really hospitable people." smiled the girl at him, put her hand on his shoulder to assure before continuing, because the boy still seemed unconvinced. "Everything is fine, don't worry."

"Just checking." murmured Jeremy with a warm smile and little blush on his cheeks.

"And what were you saying about what this tastes like?" she asked mischievously about the fruit that she was still holding, trying to drop the subject.

"Erhm, I'm not sure if you like it, but there is no harm in trying, I guess" shrugged the boy.

Aelita took a small bite from it and Jeremy examined amusedly her facial expressions of grimace while she tried to chew it.

"Let's say I'll stick with the berries." she commented while exchanging smiles with each other, its somewhat bitter taste isn't her style.

The station master's whistle alerted the gang that their train was about to leave. "Sun, sea and sand, here we come!" Odd yelled with joy when the doors closed and the train started to move. The classic clickety-clack sound was getting louder and riveting the train's acceleration.

"Do you know how real sand looks like Aelita?" asked Yumi and continued after the pink haired girl shook her head as a no. "It is kinda like the Desert Sector, but the pigmentation and the texture are a little bit different. Right, Jeremy?"

"Affirmative." chuckled the boy with glasses, confirming his friend's scientific attempt for the definition.

"Maybe we teach you how to surf this time," Ulrich waved his hand and paused before getting to the punchline of his joke with a deadpan expression. "since you know how to do it on the Internet."

Other's collective groans at his bad joke blended in with Aelita's laugh. "Seriously, Ulrich-" breathed Yumi a sigh while Odd completed her sentence. "You are better than that-"

As their chattering continues, the train had left the city as a beautiful meadow view is streaming from the windows. Jeremy settled back and breathed deeply meadow's scents filling the compartment, listening his friends' chitchat. Maybe it is what peace looks like; watching the pink haired girl next to him laugh with the people that means the most to him, seeing how the sun beams reflecting the perfect green of her eyes as she twinkles and realizing she is finally a real human being just like them. And when the girl suddenly holded his hand like she was reading his mind, the boy's heart missed a beat. That is what he is fighting for, he thought while smiling back at her. She is worthy to face the whole world.

"Now, pass it over Aelita!"

Yumi stepped backwards to return the girl's pass, tried to lighten the volleyball's momentum with a couple of flip shots before delivering it to Jeremy.

The sun is blazing down on the beach on this hot spring day, blurring their vision while heated sand is burning their feet a little. Their wet hair had dried long before they started goofing around that begin with Yumi and Ulrich's martial arts demonstration and right now everything looks about to boil away. Even though they've only been here for a few hours, all of the kids look a few tans darker.

Jeremy setted the ball hardly enough to reach Aelita and let out a heavy breath. Sports is never been his thing but Aelita had insisted a lot and he couldn't turn down her request. Besides they need more than one person to teach her how to play volleyball before this big match between girls and boys but righ now, Odd and Ulrich are too busy trying to do chartwheels like Yumi showed them before next to the court with Kiwi running around.

"It's all on the fingertips, Jeremy." panted the black haired girl, seeing his struggle and lifted the ball little more to Aelita before shouting. "Bump pass, now!"

Aelita took the right position for an underhand pass as the ball was speeding up towards her and bumped it to Yumi.

The tall girl cheered for her friend's great pass and let out a rallying cry as she was kicking the ball as hard as she could, like she does all the time in Lyoko.

Jeremy barely found the time to run to the side, not even trying to catch the ball and yawping at the same time.

"Sorry, sorry. My mistake." chuckled Yumi, moving towards the side where the ball escaped. "I'll go and get it."

The boy doubled up, trying to gather his breath in this time-out while hearing the sound of Odd's laugh in the distance, making fun of Ulrich's bad fall.

"Are you okay, Jeremy?" the other girl came closer and asked. Her cheeks look in red a few shades darker than her hair from the effort she put in, while the sun brings out her green eyes even more.

The boy nodded his head and straightened up. "You learn fast." he complimented her. In the morning she had picked up so quickly all the swimming moves that Yumi showed her. It was just the basics though, unfortunately the sea had become rough as the time passed by and despite all the insistence of the other boys, Jeremy and Yumi had decided to call it a day. The open sea isn't a right place to mess around and it is so much different than their swimming lessons with Jim at the pool. Not to mention the amount of salty water all of them swallowed.

"I kind of like it here." Aelita smiled at him. She closed her eyes and tossed her head back as if she wanted to feel the sun even more. Its warmth was feeling like little kisses on her cheek, a feeling that she has never experienced before, almost like life itself. A breeze was carrying constantly the briny, enveloping, warm smell and every time as she took a breath of salt, seaweed and iodine; it was surprising her to have this much and kind of sensations. It is a stimulus-rich environment as Jeremy described her earlier today but to be honest, she would probably never get tired of being overwhelmed by her new three senses. They were sometimes talking about how good and realistic three-dimensional Lyoko is, but if they ask her now, it is nothing compared to what she experienced in such a short time here.

"I'm really glad that you like it." responded Jeremy slowly, trying not to disturb her little tribute to the Earth.

"I wish you would play with us too." the pink haired girl turned to him and requested for the little match that will take place soon.

"Are you kidding?" the boy chortled, he had already seen this movie before. "In sports that require a tall stature, Yumi can match both of them." pointed he at the trio in striking distance.

"I guess you're right." Aelita chuckled, while looking at the other girl circling around Odd and Ulrich that was now standing on their hands and reviewing their posture. From there, the boys looked like a couple of clumsy baby bats, trying to learn how to headstand while Kiwi sniffing them and with their hair that lost volume when wet, they made Yumi look even more taller.

"And now when you are on her side, they have no chance." continued Jeremy proudly. "I'd rather stay out of this bloodbath." He added on quickly after the girl gave him a confused and worried look. "It's a figurative expression, of course."

"If you say so." said Aelita, giving him the biggest smile she has and the boy got a feeling that he has butterflies in his stomach.

"Are you ready to wipe them out, Princess?" Yumi called out to her as she came closer and winked.

"uh-huh" nodded 'the Princess' with a grin on her face.

"Both teams have a single time-out." reminded Jeremy standing next to the volleyball net with Kiwi. "Anyone want it before the game ball?"

"Yes, we are." Ulrich uttered gaspingly, trying to raise his hand as he doubled over.

"Okay then, 3 minutes." announced Jeremy. "It's 2 to 1 in favor of girls, if they win this set, they win the game."

"Yeah, yeah we know. Stop mocking with us." grumbled Odd also pantingly. He is feeling too tired to correct Jeremy's officiation terminology.

"Take as much as you want," Yumi trash talked with them as boys gathered together to discuss their strategy. "We have all the time in the world."

"You wish." snarled Ulrich at her but Jeremy could swear he was smiling before he got into a huddle with Odd.

"You play really great." Yumi turned to her teammate and addressed a praise, watching the boy's heated discussion in the meantime.

"Thanks," smiled Aelita, trying to catch her breath with a hand on her chest. "I wish we could do something against Odd's services though."

"Don't worry, it will end soon." assured black haired girl while trying to understand what the boys are up to, while Ulrich demonstrating some moves to Odd.

Jeremy clapped his hands loudly to draw their attention from the courtside. "On your positions." he called out and referred the end of the break.

Yumi took the ball from the ground and handed it over to Aelita. "Would you do the honors?" she asked the girl if she wanted to serve the ace that might be the last.

The girl took the ball and stepped back until her feet touched the field markings that can barely be seen on the sand. She casted a look at the boys through the nest that were waiting impatiently for her to start the game while trying to decide which one to target might help them to get the winning point.

Then Aelita took a deep breath, threw the ball into the air and sent it to the other side as fast as she could.

"I got it!" Ulrich informed his teammate and received the shot successfully, then delivered the ball to him, which Odd returned back to the girls' side with a blast.

"Yumi!" cried out Aelita after she bump passed it to the back, hoping she could catch it.

The Japanese girl took a step back and jumped up high, looked like for a moment that she froze in the air, then kicked the ball in force while letting out a yell.

"LYOKO STYLE!" Odd screamed at the top of his lungs and rushed at Ulrich as he went down on his knees and folded his hands to help his friend jumping higher.

As the ball touched ground on the left, both of the boys fell down on the right, tangled with each other, because Odd misstepped and Ulrich couldn't lift him enough to catch the ball.

"Game, set and match!" declared Jeremy the result with girls' screams of joy in the back. "Maybe I should have told them sooner that the gravity in here works differently than Lyoko." he muttered to himself and giggled as boys were lying down and groaning while Kiwi was licking his owner's face.

Yumi gave Aelita piggyback ride and started touring the field as a victory parade while the boys were wrangling with each other about whose fault it was.

His muscles that tired from a hectic day protested again when the boy's hand slipped a third time from the cliff's rocky surface and put his weight to one arm. Ulrich looked up at his blonde friend on the way ahead of the group and snorted, they were climbing quite a while but by time the boy had started to feel dizzy due to his acrophobia and he isn't sure if he can keep this up any longer.

Yumi stopped to help him and as Ulrich took his offerend hand, she pulled the boy to her side safely. "There you go." the girl smiled at him softly while making sure he was holding on tightly this time. The boy gave a thumbs up to her and smiled back.

"Since when you became an athlete, Jeremy?" Odd made a biting comment from their left like he read his friend's mind while panting heavily because of carrying an additional weight to his own. Kiwi barked from his backpack to show his disgruntlement of this situation.

"You're grumbling just because you lost the game earlier." Jeremy brushed him off and secured himself on a big rock to see how others were doing. "We are almost at the top and it has a really great view. It's well worth it, trust me. My father and I come here all the time." he continued.

"We are a little tired, that's all." stated Aelita trying to lighten the mood, following the steps of him.

When finally Jeremy reached the peak, he waited at the rear and gave a hand to everyone until all of them safely stood up there and listened as each person let out a shout of astonishment when they saw the view.

"Jeremy, it is-" stuttered Yumi, not being sure how to describe this breathtaking beauty of the landscape, while other boys let out a gasp. "Just wow." murmured Odd as he placed down his dog on the ground.

Jeremy, being pleased with himself, turned to the pink haired girl. She is the person whose opinion he is most curious about. "What do you think, Aelita?" he addressed her a question.

Yumi took a frisbee from her bag after she saw that look on Aelita's face and showed it to other boys. "Wanna play?" she asked them while they were cheering up on her offer. "Go Kiwi, fetch!" she threw it away and drew the others further to give space to Jeremy and Aelita.

They had arrived just in time to catch the golden hour before sunset and right now, the setting sun were painting in a goldenly orange everything on their sight, while it was washing the clouds in candescent red, as they were standing on the large cliff above the sea and watching this riot of colors' reflection on the water with sound of waves hitting rocks below. The light breeze from morning had started turning into a stronger one and still was carrying the scent of salty water as the daytime smell was changing into the night while caressing Aelita's hair. The girl couldn't take her eyes off the scenery lying ahead where the sun looked like slowly melting into the sea and was dissolving its colors through the water surface.There was something about this moment like every single thing bombarding new sensations to her, evoking some experiences hat she thinks she never had this kind of before. It felt so strange and yet hauntingly familiar as if deep down the girl knows that she has already been there, already had watched the hundreds of sunsets in the past. The pink haired girl was thrilling with the realization of being a human and its luxury of getting used to the times like this, while her heart was pounding in her chest and wondering how this can become a normal for someone or if she will ever be able to normalize it one day.

"It is- I mean this is," Aelita stumbled over, when she could finally talk. "I have no idea there are so many colors like that." she trembled, trying to give meaning to her desire to cry. She didn't know until then that people's eyes form tears not just from sadness but also when they see something so beautiful.

Jeremy gave her a warm smile, watching the last sunbeams of the day flickering in her eyes and forming reddish halos on her sun bleached hair. He didn't bother himself to say something, the moment itself was already speaking for him and accomplishing his purpose of making Aelita happy.

"Watch out!" then he heard Ulrich's cry for warning from the distance but unfortunately it was too late to get away from a frisbee coming towards him at full speed.

Seconds later Jeremy was sitting on the ground, rubbing his head while Aelita was asking him if he is okay.

"Sorry Einstein!" called out Odd and took the blame, trying to stop himself from giggling.

"It is a miracle that you guys can take aim in Lyoko." Jeremy complained, still massaging his forehead.

"Yeah, that tells a lot about Odd's hit rake." laughed Ulrich at him.

"Hey!" his friend protested him by pretending to be offended. "First of all, without me-"

"Give it a rest." Yumi chuckled and stopped them. "Are you guys coming?" then she asked Jeremy and Aelita.

"Be right there." responded Aelita, took the frisbee from the ground and offered her hand to the boy while smiling at him.

Jeremy took her hand as he stood up and let her drag him to their friends where their chattering and Kiwi's excited barking filled the air with the little taste of joy.

Rhythmic rail squeal blended with Jeremy's keyboard clicking was singing sweet lullabies to them while the minty smell of the meadow that they were passing by, was refreshing air of the compartment and making the pink haired girl shiver, but she likes it anyway. Street lamps of towns were twinkling at her from afar and she couldn't help but wonder how these people's day was going there.

Aelita glanced at her other three friends napping on each other across her. The boys' heads had fallen on Yumi's shoulders who was sitting in the middle, while their taller friend was slightly leaning on Ulrich. Kiwi's snoring coming from somewhere under the table, occasionally was drowning their slowed breathing. Maybe this is what peace looks like, she thought to herself, watching her loved ones sleep in quietness after a feverish day.

The boy next to her was still working on her antivirus, as if he hadn't done enough for her today. She wasn't sure how she could truly express her gratitude to him, so Aelita decided to keep it simple.

"Jeremy," she addressed him quietly, afraid to wake the others. "Thank you for this vacation. It was my best day on Earth." completed the girl with a soft smile.

The boy stopped typing out for a moment and turned his gaze away from his laptop to her. "So was mine." he responded, returning her smile.

As the unbearable weight of sleep was folding her in its arms, Aelita curled herself up on the seat and leaned against Jeremy. She drifted into sleep as the boy continued to work, listening to her breath slow down and blending into the others.
