ayu was never actually certain why miyako had used the phrase "to break one's collarbone" when addressing hikari, and keeping her caretaking duties in check. it was on this particular deadline, however, that she saw her guardian in full fury --

"--i can take delays, but lying about your progression?!"

"it was a simple act of miscommunication, that's all--!!!"

the editor was here upon early notice, given hikari's most recent update and insistence on an extended deadline for this milestone, specifically. and it may have been due to the trips she'd kept taking with ayu that had caused delays in the writing process.

(although the girl was persistent in asking about the author's progress, really…!)

miyako wasn't strong, given her disposition of an office worker; sitting at her desk daily didn't exactly lend one to gain muscle. however, even she could put hikari in a chokehold, arms around the author's neck, as she threatened the author (affectionately! though, how would it be read as affectionate in this manner?) spoken assertively by hikari's ears.

"then i will be here, physically, so that our wires won't get crossed. don't worry! it's only until you hand in your latest draft. you remember how many chapters we'd agreed upon before this that you had to complete by now, right?"

it was horrific -- part of the struggle represented something biblical, almost as though it could've been given form through the expertise of a renaissance painting. ayu might've flined when hikari's eyes darted over, full of fear, squeezing out a pitiful, "h-help…!" when miyako started to drag the author away.

"oh, ayu will definitely be helping -- while she's helping you do your chores, you're going to make sure your manuscript is drafted as soon as possible, because otherwise you wouldn't be helping yourself."

"a-ayu… save me…!"

as her partner, ayu really wanted to offer assistance where she could. but knowing she couldn't exactly do much to change the fate of hikari being held to her responsibilities, ayu simply watched, with great regret, as miyako shut the door to the author's office with a quiet, ominous click.

afterwards, the girl simply bowed, and uttered her best show of support in light of the tragedy.

"you can do it, sensei…"

Key's 1st Crossover TV Anime KAGINADO Announces Its Premiere Date of October 12

    KAGINADO is Key's first crossover anime project featuring the main characters from its popular game/anime series, such as Kanon, AIR, CLANNAD, Little Busters!, and Rewrite. The TV anime's official website has opened to announce its premiere date of October 12, 2021, and main voice cast members.

  While most of the voice cast memres will be reprising their characters from the games and anime, Misuzu Kamio from AIR will be newly voiced by Asami Sanada, because the character's original cast Tomoko Kawakami passed away in 2011.

  Sanada says, "When I was asked to join an audition, I remembered Kawakami-san from our time together on the radio and in anime. I admired the way she could play any role with ease and cheerfully pull us together! I felt the work and the role were able to reach the hearts of the viewers because she was such a wonderful person. I got goosebumps when I was informed that I had been chosen for the role, and even as I write this comment, I feel again the size of the role and the responsibility. I will once again firmly hold on to what I felt I wanted to cherish, and I will firmly carry on Misuzu that Kawakami-san carefully spun!"

    The Private Kaginado Academy. This is a demon-infested place where the legendary warriors of the world have gathered..., or rather, an utopia where they have squeezed out more tears than the total amount of water in Lake Biwa (estimated) from Key fans around the world for over 20 years. The goal of the Kirahoshi, who couldn't get enough of the fans' tear glands and have finally broken down the walls of the world and gathered together, is to enjoy a new school life in a new world. usually, upon a new book release, a publishing company would create promotional material to spread awareness about the title. this process may involve videos showcasing the characters and premise of the story.

incidentally, this was the process about to occur with yukari's new novel. however, there seemed to be a problem: it wasn't complete yet, and she was mulling over a digital workstation, picking at different elements of her tracks.

the act of composition was hardly an easy feat, and on speakers, the noise coming from the author's room was loud, jarring; yukari's groans and frustrated taps at her computer took ayu's attention away from cleaning at different points across the day. it was only when dinner was ready that the complaints stopped, and yukari sat at the table, eating, trying to regain her composure.

"what were you doing earlier, sensei?"

ayu must've not seen a music program before, yukari concluded, and decided to take the opportunity to cut a break out from her 'work'. after a brief explanation of her cirumstances (and technology behind the software -- which surprised ayu greatly), the girl wore a thoughtful expression.

"i see… you sounded like you were in distress earlier, though i didn't want to interrupt your work…"

"no, don't worry. i'm sorry if i scared you… but i think i'm really going to need a second pair of ears for this. would you mind?"

the dishes were set in the sink once the pair had finished their meal. at yukari's desk, ayu was presented with the screen -- on it was filled with a myriad of complicated indicators. she grasped onto the back of yukari's chair as the novice musician tried to explain the workspace.

"and this is how it sounds like now…"

as though the time away from the work in progress had cleared their heads, the duo immediately felt as though they'd regretted listening to the piece, with yukari quickly hitting the pause button once a full loop had been played.

"… no, nevermind. maybe i should just leave this sort of thing for the company to handle…"

"ah… perhaps…"

the software was closed with a single mouse click.

"then, sensei," ayu peeped, sheepish and curious, "does that mean you're done with the draft of your novel now?"

there was a curt inhale as yukari froze, realizing her day spent in vain. and ayu could only guess, looking at the author's figure from behind, that the answer was no.

"… ayu. there's no need to tell miyako about my progress yet. really…"

"r-right… it's okay, i won't tell."

yukari sighed, turning around to look at her partner. at the very least, past the tribulations, she was able to extend her hand out and pet ayu for some comfort--

-- which left the girl a blushing mess; almost looking doeful, like a puppy.

"good girl."

The Lonesome Division - The Japanese division of a certain unknown organization, so named because they have so few members and are disconnected from the rest of the organization. They’re in NYC to investigate strange happenings surrounding the ZUSAMMEN concerts.

Takashi Saitou - They/them - Human

The “leader” of the Lonesome Division, by virtue of being the oldest.

Their aberration means that when they’re nearby, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, unless they specifically think about it. A lot of their headspace is taken up by considering all the possible ways that any given situation could go badly.

Kagami Hana - She/her or they/them - Human

The resident technology expert of the Lonesome Division, who built a ghost detection machine by herself.

Her understanding of technology means that although she doesn’t have an aberration (ability), she’s still able to keep up with her teammates.

Ayu Kunikida - He/him - Human

The “dad friend” of the Lonesome Division, though he’s not the oldest.

His aberration is that he’s able to turn invisible and visible at will, though sometimes he tends to forget which state he’s in, and he sometimes turns invisible without meaning to.

Ton Siegel - He/him - Android

Former lead singer of ZUSAMMEN.

Also worked at a diner called Thermopolis, which is how he met the Division.

As of WELCOME TO THE (LONESOME) DIVISION, he’s now a member of the Lonesome Division (and quit his job, without needing much encouragement.)

Despite the fact that he’s an android, he seems to be able to experience emotions.

The “old commander” mentioned by Takashi in WELCOME TO THE DIVISION.

The Hellhounds - A biker gang based in New York City, who seem to be fearsome… Or maybe Ton is just afraid of them. Their leader is Dice, who mostly uses her (admittedly haunted) bike for pizza delivery, so…

Dice - She/her - Human

The current leader of a biker gang called the Hellhounds.

Her bike is, as said by Iskra in OUR LUCKY DAY, haunted.

This aside, she moonlights as a pizza delivery driver, and Domino is her younger brother.

She also appears prominently alongside her partner Jun in Fade to Sky.

A government spy, who used to write ZUSAMMEN’s songs.

Encounters with this girl always seem to result in somebody screaming.

All she wants to do is hang out with her best friend, hunt cryptids, and protect the city.

Despite being called “lucky”, he often feels like everything goes in exactly the way he doesn’t want it to go.

Spoiler warning: I’m going to be briefly touching on some late volume events in this review so be warned.

Volume content warnings: sexual content, homophobia, age gap romance

Ayu and Yukari have started to date after Ayu’s confession succeeded last volume and to be honest not a whole happens until the final chapter. Ayu and Yukari decide not to tell Miyako that they’re dating, they have sex in a bath, Ayu meets Tomoka, an idol/voice actress who worked on an anime adaptation of one of Yukari’s works and is also a lesbian and in love with Yukari, Yukari and Ayu get told they’ve been gaining weight (it’s the worst chapter), Yukari runs from her deadlines, and the final chapter has Ayu confront her parents at last.

Yeah, most of this volume was pretty boring with some occasional good bits. Like, even though I didn’t find Tomoka to be that interesting of a character, her presence does lead to some more conversations about queer culture in Japan which I like and I like that she becomes Ayu’s friend instead of being just a love rival. I also think that the final chapter could have had a lot of impact, if it was lead up to better. We get tiny hints that the volume could be leading up to Ayu seeing her parents, like her being jealous of how Tomoka’s parents are cool with her sexuality, but it’s few and far between and lead to making the final chapter feel like a rushed resolution to the story. Like, it would have been cool to have a chapter where Ayu meets Tomoka’s chapter or a chapter where Ayu talks to Miyako about her sexuality instead of a boring weight loss chapter. Yukari’s plot also gets a resolution in the final chapter but that too feels rushed and unimpactful due to not having much lead up in this volume so it ends up falling flatter than it should. There’s definitely some good stuff here but it’s just not executed properly and that’s a shame.

In the end, I was pretty disappointed with this volume. It had a lot of potential but ends up feeling half-assed in a lot of ways, despite the few good parts. I remember finding the first volume fairly relaxing so it’s a shame this one took a dive into the boring for me but I’d still recommend the series if you’re looking for a yuri series that talks about queer identity in Japan.

The author says in the afterword that this was intended to be a 2 volume series but says if the sales are high for this volume and the manga adaptation, then there may be a continuation. Personally, I’m not sure I would be on board with a third volume but we’ll have to wait and see.
