Thinking about Appmon again

Note: This will contain both analysis and my own personal headcanons/ideas that have no real canon evidence

So, we all know the applidrives, right? (And of course, by extension the digivices, but we’re talking appmon rn) and of course, each applidrive is color coded for each character. Haru gets red, Astora yellow, Eri blue and Rei black

(Sorry about not having good references for all of them)

Now, this is all well and good, and the colors all make sense for each chosen child, the only one that you could argue the other way about is with Eri, as she has also been represented by the color pink:

However, in this picture, it also contradicts Yuujin’s designated color of purple (which I will get to in a moment) and uses a more purple/indigo color for Rei. Though that could just be because they wanted to use a dark, but still vibrant color to match the rest, without just using black and making him look like he’s in grey-scale.

Now, as I mentioned, I can see why they used purple/indigo for Rei, but what about Eri and Yuujin?

Yuujin, like I said, is represented by purple with his applidrive, as shown here:

So why color him green? Of course, the answer is obvious, because he mainly wears green, so then the question would then shift to: Why choose purple for his appdrive DUO? I believe that it’s because while yes, the colors chosen for the appdrives is due to the chosen that it belongs to, but also the appmon partner as well.

(Side note, Tumblr only lets me use ten pictures per post, so look up Offmon yourself for the visual)

As you can see, all of the colors match up with the appmon as well, red for Gatchmon, Musimon’s yellow, Dokamon’s blue, Hackmon’s black and, of course, Offmon’s purple.

This would also explain why Eri is colored pink in the shown drawing, but her applidrive is blue.

Am I overthinking this? Yeah, probably. Do I care? Not at all!

Why I feel appmon succeeded with Yujin and Offmon whereas tamers failed with Ryo and Monodramon/Cyberdramon

 Yeah I know I’m probably not going to make any friends with this rant especially since this comparison seems pretty random at first glance so I may as well explain what the narrative similarities between the two are and why I feel one duo succeeded in terms of how they were written where the other duo failed.

The similarities in question are how both Ryo and Yujin have storylines that involve digimon partners that, while usually much more calm in their base forms have problems controlling their more violent and aggressive evolved forms and that said storylines end with said issues being resolved via said partners learning how to control themselves. But the differences in how these plot points are handled is where I feel tamers fails and appmon succeeded.

Starting off with tamers, the most obvious problem with how Ryo and Monodramon/Cyberdramon handle this kind of comparison is that while it could have been used to progress Ryo’s and/or Monodramon/Cyberdramon’s characters is that it’s resolved offscreen and that the two are just handed the ability to matrix evolve/biomerge without any explanation in the actual show, thus destroying pretty much any and all chance for said plot point to actually mean something in said season since this means we see neither Ryo or Monodramon/Cyberdramon grow as characters as a result. What makes this worse is that it doesn’t even make sense in the actual show since Ryo and Monodramon/Cyberdramon weren’t present Dobermon gave the other tamers the ability to matrix evolve/biomerge in the human world since it was established that they couldn’t do so at that point in the story. And no, bringing up a tweet made by Chiaki J. Konaka isn’t a good defence since that explanation should have been in the actual show and neither is bringing up the wonderswan games for why their characterisations are the way they are since it’s straight up bad writing for tamers to rely on a completely different medium that weren’t even released outside of Japan or given official localisations especially since tamers is supposed to be it’s own standalone season unlike 02, tri or any of the adventure movies since those are sequels that take place in the same continuity. There is also the fact that Ryo’s characterisation in tamers is... well I don’t really wanna say he feels like a gary stu since nowadays I feel like that term has lost its meaning like mary sue but I will say that his characterisation feels... overly perfect in the sense that he isn’t given any actual character flaws to work with. And while a character can still be well written even if they themselves don’t develop since they can still contributes to the growth, change and development of other characters or even the world around them, the problem is that those types of characters still need flaws in order to be interesting which is where I feel Ryo’s characterisation in tamers is lacking.

Another big problem is how tamers handles Monodramon/Cyberdramon’s characterisation or well... lack thereof since we never see what Monodramon/Cyberdramon’s personality is like outside of his violent tendencies. This is made especially clear since when he doesn’t even get to show what his character is like when he is reverted back to Monodramon who wasn’t even given any actual lines of dialogue. The lack of dialogue in question feeling more like they forgot to give Monodramon a personality rather than the lack of actual talking being a part of his character due to how little screentime he is given in this form.

Now onto appmon, that season made none of the mistakes that tamers did with Ryo and Cyberdramon/Monodramon since not only is this plot point resolved onscreen meaning we actually got to see Offmon grow from this sort of thing especially since Yujin and Offmon/Shutmon debuted in this season and not in a game that takes place in a different universe and didn’t have to rely on a tweet made the season’s screenwriter to explain a plot hole. Another big advantage the writing for Yujin and Offmon/Shutmon have is that we actually get to see what Offmon/Shutmon’s personality is like outside of said violent tendencies both during and after said plot point with Offmon’s character being very shy, friendly and not having much confidence but of course grows more confident after the plot point with his more violent evolution is resolved. And I’m pretty sure everyone knows that there is a huge difference between a character being simple like Offmon/Shutmon and being underwritten like Monodramon/Cyberdramon. Yujin also edges out over Ryo since he does have a big character flaw in being overly selfless to a fault (kinda like how Hikari/Kari is though I don’t think this comparison is the best for this sort of post) since said selflessness leads to not only him dying but also saving the world as a result. Anyways this was me saying appmon did something significantly better than tamers, I don’t know if I executed this comparison well or not so some feedback would be nice (and I mean actual feedback, not rants going x season sucks and you’re not allowed to like it) since I don’t consider myself to be someone with the best media literacy and I’m not as invested in either tamers or appmon as I am with the original adventure continuity (yeah sorry I’m basic in this situation).

Appmon Ep19 Liveblog

The time has come for Valentime’s Day! But when it’s time for the Waffle OS 11 to release, phones all over the world become infected by the L-Virus! Could it be... the time has come to use the Ultimate-grade Appmon?!

shout out to my brother for this episode — when I first watched it back in August, he noticed the Waffle OS thing and when I told him that the episode aired in February 2017, he told me all about how Apple released OS 11 during the same timeframe, which offered an interesting perspective on the rest of the episode.

Mienumon is surprisingly dedicated to L-Corp’s success as a company, especially seeing how as her actual job is to steal the App Drives.

you’d think that one of the Buddy Appmon getting infected by the L-virus would be really bad and dramatic, so it’s kinda... funny? that it’s the complete opposite with Musimon. (i’m not sure funny is the right word but it’s all i can think of.) for 10 minutes every music streaming app in the world does nothing but play virus music and then goes back to normal

the App Drivers (all four of them, not just the main trio) are really in over their heads with this one, with the swarms of Virusmon... but at the same time, they’re literally the only ones that are capable of fixing the situation... very interesting.

agghhh.... so high tension! times like these are always the absolute worst for the human partners of monsters. more often than not humans can’t do anything without their partners — and the most they can do for their partners is issue commands or just offer support. so to be stuck on the sidelines, like Haru is here, with no way to help... it’s the worst feeling! ...Eri is the complete opposite here, though, since she’s actively fighting alongside Dokamon.

of course, that helpless feeling is mutual! Dogatchmon can’t do anything here, and probably feels like they failed Haru by not being able to help him expunge the L-virus from Waffle OS... so Dogatchmon asks him to take the only option left — run away from here and save yourself. Dogatchmon’s final request to their buddy is “please live”...

oh, also, it’s worth mentioning that the voice work in this show is really good. i’m always thinking it, it’s just especially prominent now.

and then Haru abandons all sense of self-preservation to save Dogatchmon! and that’s really saying something, since it seems that this virus pool delivers constant, stinging pain. despite pleading with him to turn back, and telling him that it’s a lost cause... Dogatchmon’s hand shifts ever so slightly.

*clenches fist in an emotional way* they’re buddies...!!! their bond makes the two of them completely unbeatable!!

& because of the proof of their bond, the two of them were able to recieve Globemon’s chip. as it should be.

this part is pretty cool... it’s kinda OP, and Globemon never really uses this extent of power again, but it’s still cool...

in the end, Mienumon still got exactly what she wanted...

Ulti, ultima, ultimate! Globe, global, globalization! So, now everyone else is going to follow suit and get their Ultimate-grade Appmon. Interestingly, this kinda follows the reverse order of when they all got their Super-grade Appmon. The order for the Super Appmon was Haru, Eri, then Astora, but this time for the Ultimate Appmon it’ll be Haru, Astora, then Eri.

...I also just found out that there’s a limit of 10 photos per post... I took screencaps of every line of Haru and Gatch/Dogatchmon’s conversations... I’ll post those separately!

Appmon final scene interpretation?

Ooo, the final scene.

From the way the art style changes slightly, like the colors become more pastel and stuff (I’d need to rewatch the scene to be sure) I imagine it as a dream.

But imo, it makes the ending all the more tragic if Haru misses Yuujin so much that he starts dreaming of him. Plus, in context of the scene, it implies that Haru was studying so hard and so long that he ended up passing out because of it.

Sure, Haru looks happy, but remember that it’s Haru himself narrating the ending. An unreliable narrator is a thing after all.

I could delve into my headcanons about where the Yuujin plot line could go in my hypothetical sequel, but I’ll keep it to just this. Anyway, tl;dr, Haru misses Yuujin very much and it’s bad on his mental health.
